Last year, I might as well have just cancelled Christmas because everything just blew through so fast. I barely finished my tree before I was taking it all down.
This year, I wanted to get started early - not to drown in Christmas stuff, but to also just get into the Thanksgiving mood. Thanksgiving, for the USA, it only a few weeks away!
So we're back, and with all of the messages preserved from seasons past.
Welcome back.

yay!!

Yup. Yay's right :)

Wow, just November, election over and now Thanksgiving plans! I just got invited to a Thanksgiving I can't attend (because it's in Minneapolis) but I do get to have some time off for it, and I'm wondering if there's some chance of having Thanksgiving holiday with some of my new friends from Moveon.org... hm.

AND NOW ITS BACK FOR 2009!! YAY!!!!

Over the weekend I was thinking a lot about "the Holidays" in general. I realized that, speaking for myself, since Halloween has become such a Big Deal, I really now have the sense that "the Holiday Season," in the U.S. anyway, doesn't start at Thanksgiving. No, it now starts at Halloween. :-\
I was also remembering how I used to be really annoyed by Christmas stuff before Thanksgiving. I still think it's a bit much for stores to have Christmas stuff displayed before Halloween ::) but I've pretty much reconciled myself to starting to prepare for Christmas when Halloween is over. Last year I "gave in" and gave up standing on principle and refusing to start my Christmas preparations until after Thanksgiving. I was a bit chagrined to discover, when I did this last year, that my December was a whole lot less stressful when I stopped trying to cram too much into the few weeks--really weekends--between Thanksgiving Day and December 24. The answer for me is not to cut back on what I do each Christmas Season, but rather to start it earlier.
And so, since I spent this past Saturday cleaning my entire condo :P the job for next Saturday will be to take down my current model train layout and prepare for the Christmas layout. And after work today I am going to K-Mart to see if they have Christmas trees available yet (I'll be surprised if they don't) because I need a new Christmas tree for this year.
-
I started my Christmas shopping in January... I'm almost finished now so fingers crossed I can enjoy December! I had planned to do a lot of Christmas crafting this year but didn't get round to it because of my re-interview preperations and my house move. Next year that's my plan!

Yes, indeed, my local K-Mart has its Christmas trees out. Unfortunately they didn't have anything that I liked or that fit my needs in my small home. :-\
And the prices were outrageous! >:(

wow! Now that´s planning :) Must be nice to have it almost over with.
We´ve solved it differently. We are all gonna go out together and have a big dinner at a fancy restaurant near Christmas, and call it quits. ::)

Thanks to my trip to Edinburgh, my Christmas shopping is pretty much done, Kelda. They're all getting Scottish woolen scarves! ;D

Mine too! My family will get flacons of Scottish single malt whiskey, except for my son who's underaged and an athlete. He'll get a Scottish scarf in the Stevenson tartan. And my daughter who's pregnant. I already gave her her Shetland wool sweater.

Isn't anybody getting a Shetland pony? ??? ;D

Well, Summer is almost over, so it's time to bump up the holiday forum. The Autumnal Equinox is almost upon us, and then, on to Halloween.
-
Thank you, Chuck! :D

You're welcome Meryl!
It's time for autumnal decor!

On September 19th we have "Talk Like A Pirate Day" (a fave of Jeff's)
and then September 22nd is the autumnal Equinox. ;D
In the Northern Hemisphere, the fall equinox marks the first day of fall (autumn) in what we call astronomical seasons. There's also another, more common definition of when the seasons start, namely meteorological definitions, which are based on average temperatures rather that astronomical events.

One of our local TV meteorologists--one of the more reliable ones--once explained that to meteorologists, fall is September, October, and November; winter is December, January, and February; spring is March, April, and May; and summer is June, July, and August.

This is the pattern generally accepted in the Southern Hemisphere - well the Pacific area of it anyway. NZ, Australia, PNG and Fiji all say Spring started on September 1 although it did not feel like it last week but then they do say Spring weather is changeable.
-
That's how we divide the year here too.
Summer officially ends 31st August and autumn begins in September.
