1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?  Wrapping paper for most things -- gift bags if the gift is an awkward size or shape

2. Real tree or Artificial?  I'd like to have artificial but The Husband doesn't. So far it's a real tree, usually some kind of spruce.

3 When do you put your tree up?  Usually the second week of December

4 When do you take the tree down?  Anywhere from the second week of January to Valentine's Day!

5. Do you like eggnog?   Yes -- Southern Comfort is my favorite. Despite the brand name, it isn't alcoholic -- I occasionally mix Bailey's Irish Cream with eggnog but the flavors of whiskey or brandy mixed with eggnog has never worked for me.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?  Tossup between a pogo stick and a toy roller coaster

7 Hardest person to buy for?   My mother and mother-in-law both

8. Easiest person to buy for?  My youngest niece

9. Do you have a nativity scene?    No

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?  Some years I mail Christmas cards, but it's not a regular thing. I often send email holiday greetings

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?  The various baby dolls that well-meaning aunts gave me in an attempt to 'convert' me to proper 1950s femininity. I gave them to my older sister.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?  Scrooged and Christmas Carol (Patrick Stewart version a favorite)

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?  Labor Day.

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?  Many -- and I suspect some of my own have been too.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?   Pumpkin pie.

16. Lights on the tree?  Multi colored lights, steady burning.

17. Favorite Christmas song?   A number of them. Celine Dion's version of "O Holy Night", some of the very old carols such as "Holly and the Ivy" and "Lulay, lulay thou holy child."  Also some that are played at Christmas but don't specifically mention it: "Song For a Winter's Night" and "The Promise."  Favorite contemporary Christmas carol: "There's Something About Christmastime" (Brian Adams)

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?   Used to travel but now it's gotten too expensive

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?   Yes

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?   No - actually we have a Shriner's fez

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?  Neither. The Husband works on both Thanksgiving and Christmas, so we open presents Christmas night.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?   The preaching about "materialism" at Christmas from clergy who totally ignore it as a moral problem the rest of the year.

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?  Don't have one.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?   Turkey, followed closely by quail.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?   A new house!

I don't know if you all have heard it, but here in the NYC area, there is a song that one of the stations play.  It's by commedian Bob Rivers, called "Who Put The Stump?" and is sung from the point of view of the angel, after being placed on top of the Christmas tree.

I'd like to find the guy
Who done me wrong
And stuck my arse up
On this Christmas tree.
Who put the stump
In my rump-ba-bump-ba-bump?
Who took and jammed it
In my ram-a-lam-a-ding dong?
Who stood the wood
Where I poop-she-poop-she-poop?
Who put the stick
Up my hipty-dipty-dip?
Who was that man?
He shoved it up my can
And left me stranded on this Christmas tree. (Yeah ...)
When this angel heard
Chop-ba-ba-bop, di-chop-ba-ba-bop,
A dreadful fear went right into my heart.
Those pine tree needles sting me,
Ram-a-jam-a-ram-a-jammin' in my ding dong.
You'll never know how much that smarts. (Hooah ...)
So who put the stump
In my rump-ba-bump-ba-bump?
Who took and jammed it
In my ram-a-lam-a-ding dong?
Who stood the wood
Where I poop-she-poop-she-poop?
Who put the stick
Up my hipty-dipty-dip?
Who took that bush
And crammed it in my tush?
He made this angel beg for mercy, please. (Yow ...)
Each night when I'm alone,
Scratchity scratchity scratchity scratchity
Scratchity scratchity shoop ...
It sets my tiny bottom all aglow.
And every time I wiggle,
Slipty-din-de-din, slipty-din-de-din,
A little further in it goes. (Ohhh/Yeah ...)
(Rump-ba-bump-ba-bump
Ram-a-lam-a ding dong
Slipty-din-de-din
Poopity poopity shoop ...)

Have you tried rum? I used to do brandy, but my husband was a rum person, and I discovered those flavors go better.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?   Depends on the gift and how rushed I am.  If I'm rushed or the gift is weird shaped (like those things in plastic bubbles) I use bags otherwise wrapping paper.

2. Real tree or Artificial?   Artificial with real boughs for centerpieces and additional decorations, so you get the pine smell.

3 When do you put your tree up?  Thanksgiving day while dinner is cooking and before football.

4 When do you take the tree down?   New Year's Day after the Rose Parade and before the Rose Bowl

5. Do you like eggnog?  Yes! with Jack Daniels!

6. Favorite gift received as a child?  Erector set. and a metal Buck Roger's ray gun made by Daisy

8. Easiest person to buy for?   Me.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?    Yes.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?  Christmas cards.  (Old fashioned, like Currier and Ives)
11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?  Clothes from relatives trying to change my tastes.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?     Christmas Story and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?  January 1

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?   Angel (cheap and cardboard, but old enough to be an antique.)

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?   Both.  There are two shifts.  Christmas Eve is five way chili night (I make the cornbread) for a small group of immediate family and friends.  We watch National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation as a tension reliever from planning a big party and because it's a comic  version of what tomorrow is going to be like.  Christmas day it's presents for the rest of the family when they come for dinner.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?    Unpredictable weather.

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?  Old fashioned ornaments.  I like a Christmas setting that evokes a timeless nostalgia.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?    Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?  I prefer wrapping paper, but sometimes I use bags if I am in a hurry. I think wrapping a present gives it more meaning for some reason. Let's put it this way if I were giving my special one a gift it would be wrapped.

2. Real tree or Artificial?  I prefer real trees although artificial ones are easier and safer. I like the smell the real ones give the house.

3 When do you put your tree up? Well, I think about putting it up early every year, but then it seems like I never get around to it until a week or less before Christmas. Sometimes I do better than that.

4 When do you take the tree down?  Never ever before New Years Day. I always heard it was bad luck to take it down before New Years Day.

5. Do you like eggnog?  Yes I love egg nog, especially if it has liquor in it.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?   Hmmmmmm, I'm not sure. There were plenty of favorite gifts.

7 Hardest person to buy for?    My father.

8. Easiest person to buy for?  My mother.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?     No.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?   I believe in being old fashioned when it comes to cards. I mail them. That adds a special touch as far as I'm concerned. I'm not a big fan of email cards in general. I used to like them when I first discovered them, but now I would rather go for the real thing.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?   This thing that looked like some kind of doll. I never understood that one.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?    I'm not sure.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?   Well I try to do it early, but then I seem to end up waiting until the last minute. However, I do not wait until Christmas Eve.

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?  No.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?   Turkey, stuffing, green bean casserole

16. Lights on the tree?   Definitely!!! What is a Christmas tree without lights?

17. Favorite Christmas song?   All I Want For Christmas by Mariah Carey

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?   Stay home I guess although I would love to go to New York, Los Angeles, or San Francisco. I think each would have its own magic.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?    Yes.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?   Angel.

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?   Christmas morning of course. Santa Claus doesn't come until very late on Christmas Eve so how can you open presents before?

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?    The repetitive nature of family gatherings.

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?   Icicles, but you can't use them if you have a pet. Colors are red, blue, and green.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?     Turkey and all the trimmings.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?    The special one I mentioned who I would wrap a present for.

Title: Re: A Holiday Survey!

3 When do you put your tree up? We aim for a couple of weeks before Christmas.

5. Do you like eggnog? Ask my waistline.

6. Favorite gift received as a child? A bright-red typewriter.

7 Hardest person to buy for?  My kids. They're not interested in anything that doesn't cost at least $100.

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?  No.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?  Cookies.

16. Lights on the tree?  Yup!

17. Favorite Christmas song?   "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and all the verses of "Deck the Halls."

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?   A tinfoil Happy New Year's tiara.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

Both, but more often, wrapping paper.  I love, love, love wrapping presents.  I find it really a fun and calming activity.  It's fun to see how excited my cat gets over the activity too.

2. Real tree or Artificial?

In my apartment I usually don't bother decorating at all.  But at my parents' house we have an artificial tree.  Long, long ago, my Mom was once in a building where a Christmas tree caught fire, and I guess that was enough to scare her into using an artificial tree all these years.

3 When do you put your tree up?

My family's tradition is to put up all the Christmas decorations the day and weekend following Thanksgiving.  If I was home right now, today would be the first decorating day.  But, alas, I'm writing this post from my office.  One nice thing about the artificial tree is that you can leave it up all month without worrying about anything.

4 When do you take the tree down?

My parents usually take the tree down on New Years day or shortly thereafter.

5. Do you like eggnog?

I love eggnog.  If it was socially acceptable, I'd swim in it.  :P

6. Favorite gift received as a child?

When I was about 8 or 9 my parents got me an old fashioned wooden dollhouse kit.  My Dad and I spent years building it. It's very, very elaborate and even has electricity both indoors and outdoors.  We put real wood siding on it and wood shingles on one by one.  Inside we wallpapered each room and spent a long time decorating it. There was a really neat dollhouse supply store not far from our house.  It was actually part of our weekly errands for a while to go to Lollies (that was the store's name) and pick out one new thing for the house each week.  Really it's a work in progress still to this day.

7 Hardest person to buy for?

I have a lot of out of town friends who I buy for still... and it's hard to know exactly what they might want these days since I don't exactly know what they're up to on a daily basis anymore.  My parents are very easy to buy for.

8. Easiest person to buy for?

My Dad.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?

No.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?

Mail.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?

No one thing stands out.  I have received various awful articles of clothing over the years, but again none stand out as the absolute worst.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?

A Christmas Story.  And, the televised version of The Nutcracker

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?

October

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?

Shamefully, yes. (http://bestsmileys.com/blushing/2.gif)

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?

I love very old-fashioned, though now seemingly weird foods.  My fav is plum pudding with brandy sauce.

16. Lights on the tree?

white lights

17. Favorite Christmas song?

"Good King Wenceslas"

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?

I have to travel to get to my parents' house.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?

no

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?

star

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?

Christmas morning

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?

Having to deal with travel and having to deal with the post office a lot in shipping things.

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?

I like retro ornaments.  I also like Dickens Village lighted house displays.

I thought when you said "Lights on a tree?" it was a yes or no question  :) If we are talking about what kind I would say multi colored, steady with a twinkle every now and then.

17. Favorite Christmas song?   "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

This is my Mom's favorite Christmas song!  She had my Dad make her a cassette tape for the car with all the different versions of that song (different singers, eras, etc.) he could find.  So, she drives around listening to that song over and over again during the holiday season.

I like the song too.  It has an interesting almost melancholy sound to it.  And, the Judy Garland/WWII history to it is pretty interesting too.

Castle's sectret

What's that, Chrissi?

It's basically medallions of pork fillet in Bressot- sauce. You wrap every slice of medallion in a slice of bacon. Not really bacon, something in higher quality, like Spanish Jamon, with much less fat than bacon has.
Place the medallions tightly packed in a casserole dish (but sauté the medallions gently before). The sauce is made of Bressot and sour cream. Bressot is a specific cream cheese with herbs.
Mix sour cream with Bressot, pour it on the medallions and put the whole thing in the oven.

We always serve it with wide noodles. Green salad fits nicely as a healthy side dish, since the Castle's Secret is a heavy, high-calory meal.

Hubby and me made it a tradition in our family to have it every Christmas Eve. :)

And it's called "secret" because you can't see what's in the casserole when you take it out of the oven. The sauce is so thick, you don't see the meat. But I have no idea where the "castle" part comes from .

Ooh - I like Myer's Dark Rum with it, too.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

Wrapping paper. I LOVE to wrap presents. It's one of my favorite things to do. I love to wrap presents while watching a Christmas movie. I spend a lot of time on each present. Lots of ribbons and I normally tie my bows by hand. I love the solid color wrapping paper. Then I add additional color with the ribbons and bows. My favorite paper is the solid red paper (blue and green also) with a slightly shiny finish. I also love the gold and silver foil papers.

2. Real tree or Artificial?

Artificial. My artificial tree looks very real. I also spend lots and lots of hours shaping and decorating the tree. I'm very fussy about it. lol

3 When do you put your tree up?

Normally the first or second week in December. I really don't have a specific date. I put it up when I'm in the mood.

4 When do you take the tree down?

Epiphany (January 6)

5. Do you like eggnog?

Some years I do, and others I don't. I think I probably won't like it this year. It's awfully sweet and thick. :P If I drink it, I prefer it with alcohol. The alcohol helps to cut the sweetness a little.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?

The puppet theater my great aunt and uncle gave me. It had a stage with curtains that opened and closed. It also had about a dozen different backgrounds and 6 marionette puppets. They were beautiful, very ornate. It probably wasn't the best thing to give a 10 year old, but I appreciated it. I wish I had it now. I'm not sure what happened to it. I also loved my Lego and Lincoln Log sets.

7 Hardest person to buy for?

My Dad. Definately. He's impossible to buy for. I normally just buy him a gift card and let him get his gift himself.

8. Easiest person to buy for?

My nieces and nephew.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?

Yes.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?

Mail.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?

Somebody actually gave me a fruit cake once! Yuck. I pulled it into pieces and fed it the birds and animals outside.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?

Rudolph the Red Nosed Raindeer. I also love The Preacher's Wife, A Christmas Carol with George C. Scott, Miracle on 34th Street, It's a Wonderful Life, The Bishop's Wife, A Charlie Brown Christmas, etc...

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?

Middle to late November. Although if I find something in June or July I will go ahead and buy it, if I'm certain it will make a nice gift for somebody.

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?

Several times, years ago. I know. It's terrible isn't it?

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?

Yes.

16. Lights on the tree?

Some years I like solid lights (miniature, non twinkling) and other years I like multi colored lights. I'm thinking about using solid blue lights this year.

17. Favorite Christmas song?

Carol of the Bells. Also Oh Holy Night.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?

Stay home. By that I mean I stay here in town, but I travel to several different places on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?

Yup!

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?

Angel. Every year she gets a tree top up her ass. I'm thinking about giving her a break this year and using a bow up there instead. My angel is animated. She moves. She has a candle that lights up in each hand.

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?

At my house we generally open up one or two presents on Christmas Eve night and the rest on Christmas Day. With everyone else, I go over to their house on Christmas Day.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?

The terrible traffic at the stores and malls. The parking lots are full and the lines are awful at the checkout aisles.

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?

I have many wooden ornaments on my tree. I also like the traditional shiny ornaments. Some of my ornaments have a scene inside of them - Santa, a teddy bear, and other things.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?

Ham.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?

I really don't know. I haven't thought about it too much. The promise of a stress free year would be nice, but I know that isn't going to happen! ;)

It's funny you mention that, because one year (the year before last I think) my roommate Cory bent her arms BEHIND her and it looked like she was trying to pull the tree off.

You'd have to see the angel to understand. She only moves her arms and her head. Her arms were going sideways behind her and her head was rotating, and it looked like she was really struggling to get it out! haha.

You know, my third favorite actor, Ralph Fiennes was asked this same question on "Inside the Actors Studio" and answered almost identically.  It wasn't a puppet theater - it was a play theater with cut-out actors you put on little stands and move around the stage.

Just wanted to share that.  ;)

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?   Wrapping paper.  I usually wait til I have everything that I'm going to wrap and do them at the same time.  I like to wrap them all the same, so I can see "my" presents (the ones I'm giving) under the tree, sprinkled about.

2. Real tree or Artificial?   Well, real is nicer, but we have a very small artificial one I'm hoping Mr. and Mini Meno will accept.

3 When do you put your tree up?  This year, soon before Dec 16, when my mom arrives.

4 When do you take the tree down?   I don't know.  Some moment I feel well-rested enough.

5. Do you like eggnog?   Once or twice a season.

6. Favorite gift received as a child?    I don't know.  I'll think about it.

7 Hardest person to buy for?    My brother in law.

8. Easiest person to buy for?   Myself and my daughter.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?     Yes, what's not to love about them?  A little family, animals, visiting friends.  My love for them is not a religious thing.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?   Nope.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?    That one I do clearly remember.  The biggest effin disappointment I ever had was when I was about 12 and I had asked for a guitar, and there, under the tree, was a plastic bullshit piece of crap, toy guitar.  Still resentful, me?  Time to let it go?

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?    The Grinch.  It's a Wonderful Life.  Some favorite Christmas scenes: Love, Actually.  Desk Set.  Little Women (the Winona Ryder one).

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?    I don't really buy much.  Now-ish.

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?    Sure, some of my favorite presents were things passed to me by people who knew I loved something of theirs.  I've done the same.  If you're talking crappy tie that nobody wants, I've stopped giving unmeaningful presents, that kind of stuf just goes to the donation box.  I give very few people presents these years.  I try to look at it as who am I the main gift-giver to?  And that's where I focus most.  I focus most on my daughter (of course), and my mom (because my stepfather isn't around to give her gifts anymore, and he used to be quite generous), and my husband.  But with my husband, I give him stuff whenever I want to during the course of the year (same for my daughter, of course), and I know his family is going to give him stuff, so mostly MiniMeno and Grandma Meno.  And now this year, we have my sister's new baby in the family, but again, I've given him several things already this year, and he's well-covered by various other family members.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?    My stepmother's homemade German Christmas cookies from when I was a child.

16. Lights on the tree?   Yes.

17. Favorite Christmas song?   I love Christmas songs.  I love a good mix of them, most of what's been named already.  It's my favorite part of Christmas.

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?   This year, stay home.  Usually we go to my mom's, and were going to this year, but decided to save that trip til January.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?     Probably.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?   I don't know what we'll do this year.

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?   Christmas Eve with my husband's side of the family, Christmas morning, just our little family this year, I think.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?   The emphasis on "stuff" I guess.  I'm pretty sheltered from it now, I don't go to malls usually, and I don't watch TV, other than a couple shows I TiVo, so I'm not exposed to it as much as I used to be.  Mini-Meno doesn't know about material over-consumption yet.

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?   Unlikely to break.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?     I don't know.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?     I told Mr. Meno I only really want one thing, but it's sort of big.  I want professional window washers to wash every window, in and out, upstairs and down.  We've lived here 5 1/2 years, and there are upstairs windows that have never been cleaned on the outside in all that time.  Other than that, I'm pretty set.

Thanks, Chuck!

I've had that done about four times in the past few years, in preparing various houses for sale (two of mine, one of my mom's*). And it really does make a big, bright, noticeable difference. I've vowed that in the future I won't wait until I'm selling my house to have it done.

I don't know if you've priced it for your house, but for mine I found it really wasn't as expensive as I would have thought (about $150 for sort of
average-sized four-bedroom houses). You can usually tell the window washer the number of windows and s/he'll give you Mr. Meno a price on the phone. Not that money is a concern when it comes to a Christmas gift for Mr. Meno's lovely wife!  :)

* Not that anybody is probably dying of curiousity, but just to show I'm not totally innumerate -- four window washings, three houses -- it's because I had it done twice to one of the houses.

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Depends on the gift. If I can't find an appropriately sized box for it, or if the shape is awkward, I'll use a gift bag.

2. Real tree or Artificial? After a lot of thought I have decided to take issue with the very distinction, real vs. artificial, with regard to Christmas trees. I have decided to go with natural (or maybe even organic) vs. man-made. What makes a Christmas tree real has nothing to do with whether the tree is a formerly living natural tree or whether it is a man-made object from a factory somewhere. That said, it's against city ordinances to have a natural tree in high-rise in Philadelphia, so my tree is man-made.

3 When do you put your tree up? On or around St. Nicholas Day, December 6, give or take a few days depending on available time.

4 When do you take the tree down? Sometime between New Year's Day and Epiphany (January 6), inclusive/

5. Do you like eggnog? Yes

6. Favorite gift received as a child?  My Tyco "Official" Petticoat Junction electric train set.

7 Hardest person to buy for?    Just about anybody. I'm terrible at thinking up gift ideas for people.

8. Easiest person to buy for?   Myself  :-\

9. Do you have a nativity scene?     Yes, a ceramic set made by my grandmother.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?   Christmas cards

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?   I think I must have blocked it from my memory because it was so bad, because I don't remember.  ???

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?  A tie: The original cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas and A Charlie Brown Christmas. I watch them both on video every year.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?   September-October

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?   Yes, but only when it was something that I knew the recipient would really want or could really use, not as a means of getting rid of something that I didn't want or couldn't use.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?  Homemade molasses-ginger snaps

16. Lights on the tree?   Yes. Lights are the soul and essence of a Christmas tree.

17. Favorite Christmas song?  Secular: "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas."  Sacred: "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing."

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?   Travel a short distance to be with my dad, and then we travel about the same distance to have Christmas dinner with his cousins.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?    Since before I could read. And I do not include Rudolph.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?   A star. Always.

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?   Since it's just Dad and me, we've taken to opening them on Christmas Eve.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? The fact that Christmas stuff started appearing in stores before Halloween.   >:(

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?  Red and gold ornaments with a clear glass bead garland.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?   Doesn't matter whether it's turkey or ham, as long as there is stuffing and gravy.  ;D

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?   A boyfriend would be nice.  :-\

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Depends what it is, but if it can be wrapped, it gets wrapped. Steve does the wrapping, btw. I ain't no good at it.

2. Real tree or Artificial? Real, and it always comes from our property, which is full of trees.

3 When do you put your tree up? Depends. This year, we are leaving for my folks tommorrow and returning Sunday or Monday, so we will do it when we get back.

4 When do you take the tree down?  New Years day, without fail.

5. Do you like eggnog?   NO!

6. Favorite gift received as a child? As a kid, anything that has anything to do with trains.

7 Hardest person to buy for?    Because we have everything, we don't buy each other anything. We have a big Christmas party each year. We go all out, it is expensive, but it is our gift to our friends and family (that can make it). Because our family is so large, we don't buy gifts. Each person buys one very nice gift (we usually have ideas what people want), and do a 'White Elepant' type gift exchange. It is fun, and most people enjoy the gift they end up with.

8. Easiest person to buy for?  See above.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?  No. There is a farm down the road from us. It is called 'Little Alaska'. Each year they put out a life size nativity scene, so we enjoy it.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Mail.

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Don't recollect.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon? The original "It's a Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?   Tommorrow, and finish tommorrow--other than to shop for our party.

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present? No.

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? Everything we don't eat the rest of the year.

16. Lights on the tree? Yeah, and on the house, in the yard, around the pool, on the barn, etc. etc.  ;D

17. Favorite Christmas song? White Christmas

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? This year, staying home. Steve's mom and his oldest sister and her husband will be with us.

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?  Yep.

20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star.

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning? Morning.

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? Our electric bill. It goes through the roof.

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color? None.

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?  Turkey with the fixins'.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?  Another happy year.

You have a Snowman city Janice? That sounds really nice. Do the little houses light up?

My mom had a miniature Christmas city she put out every year. She bought a couple of new pieces every year, and when she died I think there were probably 30 different houses and buildings. It looked like a little German or Swiss (Alpine) town. She always set it up in the dining room on the buffet table. Everything lit up and a few pieces were animated. Santa circled around one of the houses for example. And you could look through some of the windows and see furniture and people in some of the rooms.

Then, after mom died, dad gave the whole deal to my sister and I haven't seen it since. I hope everything isn't broken because Susan doesn't take very good care of things. >:(

I love those little miniature Christmas towns. Maybe this year I'll start one of my own! :)

I started one David.  It got out of hand really quickly...the little people and trees...oy I needed another room just for it.

That's what I'm afraid of. I'm scared I'll buy a few pieces and become obsessed with it. I'll keep going back and buying more and more, and then not have any money left for Christmas presents. ALTHOUGH, I have quite a bit of my shopping finished so I might be able to sucessfully pull it off. I get obsessed with things too easily.

Do you have any pictures of your village Scott? If so, maybe you could post a pic of it in here. I'd love to see what it looks like. I think those little villages are fascinating. I spent many hours looking at my mom's village. I'd sit there and try to imagine myself living in it! :)

Wow, what time are YOU serving? It's going to be a busy night -- first to Germany for dinner with Chrissi, then to Colorado for dinner at your house. I'd better catch a ride with Santa!

I read somewhere that Santa travels in a space-time continuum. This is the only way he can manage to visit every house in the world in just one night. So he can easily get you from Minnesota to Germany in less than a blink of the eye. And then on to Colorado once you've sampled Chrissi's Castle's Secret, desert and a few engaging conversations. But if you're planning to do all these things in just one night, Santa is probably your only hope of success. The problem is seeing Santa when he's flying that fast. I'll email the North Pole for you Katherine and I'll ask Santa to slow his sled down as he approaches the greater Minneapolis airspace. ;)

1. Wrapping paper or gift bags?

It depends on the gift: some are naturally suited to a bag while others must be wrapped.

2. Real tree or Artificial?

Artificial; a real tree would be impracticle , since --like the rest of Central Denver--we keep it up a very long time

3 When do you put your tree up?

Our tree is lit whenever the tree in Rockefeller Center is lit; sometime during  thne first week of December.

4 When do you take the tree down?

In NYC on the Feast of the Epiphany; here in Denver after the National Western Stock Show...say the first week of February. Stock Sow is cool, they parade Cattle down Colfax Avenue; cowboys, cattle and sheep all over town lol

5. Do you like eggnog?

yes , but in moderation cause it's realllllly heavy

6. Favorite gift received as a child?

A geology kit; a microscope

7 Hardest person to buy for?

My brother Richard, for whom everything must be PERFECT.

8. Easiest person to buy for?

My wife and my mother.

9. Do you have a nativity scene?

Yes. Katrina has a small one. I have the old family one but it's still in NY.   My mother bought it at Macy's when she had her first job. It was a shambles and I restored all the statues; filled in the nicks, re-joined broken sections, restored and repainted it completely in the early 90's when we had this blizzard.

10. Mail or email Christmas cards?

REAL Christmas Cards

11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received?

It's a tie! YES,its a TIE I tell you, a tie between:

1-----a cassette tape entitled " Songs of the Third Reich:Volume 1-- 'OH, Tannenbaum!' A Compendium of Music for the Holidays In Adolf Hitler's Germany "
2-----a briefcase, designed to make me fit into someone else's mold.

12. Favorite Christmas Movie/Cartoon?

A-----The 3 Christmas episodes from a series which ran a few years ago named 'Roswell'. It was a GREAT series about--as my wife and I put it, 'horny teenaged aliens'. Absolutely no BS: their Christmas episodes may well be among the finest ever filmed for television. My wife and I went crazy over them.

B-----Miracle On 34th Street; the original...while the remake was  nice,  it wasn't GREAT.

13. When do you start shopping for Christmas?

I do it throughout the year. It works better that way.

14. Have you ever regifted a Christmas present?

Of course I have! roflmao Anyone who says they HAVE NOT is full of @#$%^&*

15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas?

many, but a fruit stollen comes to mind....

16. Lights on the tree?

A tree should have as many lights as possible.  We have an artificial tree, and I made sure it had abundant lights cause I hate twisting lights around branches.

17. Favorite Christmas song?

Hark the Herald Angels Sing; John Lennon's "No More War"; "Walking in a Winter Wonderland" by THE eURYTHMICS ; Handel's "Messiah"

18. Travel at Christmas or stay home?

I have ALWAYS had Christmas at home and since getting married Katrina has umm, JOYOUSLY flown offto NY because she wants to have Christmas with MY family....which says it all.  This year we are actually staying here in Denver and having her mother and brother come to OUR house...  It's a wierd feeling...

19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer?

not a one

20. Angel on the tree top or a star?

both work . it depends on the tree itself. The one thing I can't fathom is a 'steeple'. They look ridiculous.

21. Open presents on Christmas Eve or morning?

Christmas Eve

22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year?

It's too short

23. Favorite Ornament theme or color?

Red and Gold

24. Favorite for Christmas dinner?

no preference.

25. What do you want for Christmas this year?

Normality    [HAHAHA!!!}
In lieu of that, opera tickets would be nice so long as it was a good company--it's been a while; so would tickets to a visiting philharmonic

Perhaps I should reconsider my answer as to who is easiest to buy for. My friend John, one of my SCA-medieval reenactment buddies, is the easiest person to buy for after myself. All you have to do is find him something with a dragon on it, and he's happy as a clam.  :)

I had no idea Jeff

Did you see Martina/desertrat's photobook of the barbarians, and the rennaissance  groups in Vienna?

She looks DAZZLING in costume;  I have to hand it to her, she manages to embody the finest of Viennese culture>>>>>which is, remarkably, INTACT. Few cities can say that today....especially cities which have been through as much insanity as Vienna  over the last 100 years

Yes, she once PM'd me a picture of her and her fella, both in "garb." I've seen a pic of her as a "warrior princess," too. Jaw-droppingly stunning. ...  :)
