Title: BetterMost Banner Image Collection
Post by: Phillip Dampier on July 05, 2006, 11:02:56 pm
Each month, BetterMost will have a new image at the top of the site.  Just like a calendar, each month will bring something new.  For those who want to see the images in their full glory, I will attach them as replies to this message so you can see what they look like or save them yourself.  These will be in high resolution, so please be patient as they load.

To save these images, in most browsers, simply right click on the image and select Save Picture As and then you can save it to your own computer.

[Whoops... I had this thread locked in error.]

Here is the image we are using for the month of July.  It's too bad we couldn't accomodate more of the fence in our banner!

The banner just does nothing to prepare us for the beauty in these images!

These have got to be the best scenery picture I've ever seen - truly magestic - they are now part of my desktop - move over Ennis, you've been there for half a year now  ;D (still part of my screen saver, though)

Thanks to the photographer(s) and to you Phil (?) for making these available

Wow, these are lovely pics.
I can imagine Ennis and Jack finding a passage between the mountains.
Make sure you download them and look at the whole picture.
It is fun to zoom in on parts of the mountains and plains and check to see if Ennis and Jack are coming around that bend in the trail.
Over there, over there, I am sure I can see a hat behind that rock.
oops! getting carried away again.
Thanks Phillip

Little mementoes of paradise for us to savor on a month-by-month basis. Thank you, Phillip, for all the beauty. I think it would be neat, if it were possible, to somewhere state the geographic location where each image was taken.

Regards,
Scott

Unfortunately, I usually don't have that information.  When it is provided, I'll include it.

I love the sheep, but I wanted to pick up the pace of changing the banner more often.  John is trying to figure out a way to increase the amount of banner image and decrease the pesky yellowing "info bar" that covers at least 1/3rd of it.  Take a look at this and see why the banner alone cannot do the image justice!  (Use the scroll bar at the bottom of the message to pan right and left. Your browser can also capture the image.)

That's a very beautiful picture Phillip.

I'm starting to wonder how on earth I'm going to be able to take photographs in Alberta that really reflect the beauty and vastness of the place... :-\

Take them with your mind's eye; smell the air deeply; touch the surfaces & textures you encounter; sit or lay for a while to just listen to, feel and sense the place;  & remember the feeling of the place in your heart.  Then, along with any "proper" photos you take you'll have the perfect memory.

A good tip is to actually get a photo of you in the scenery, not just as a souvenir pic, but of you enjoying it somehow - stretched out on a rock, paddling in the river, arms round a tree, that kind of thing...with you not overly prominent in the composition.  They might not be the prize aesthetic photos in your collection but should help bring back the sensations you had at the time when you look at them again.

What I'd love to do is find someone who can take a digital recording w/ microphone and just record the natural sounds of locations like these and provide the audio so that folks can sit back, relax, and experience the atmosphere even more.

I am planning to make some banners for your consideration and put them here. I take it you want a 1688x1126 RGB JPEG at 72 dpi with a pixel depth of 8 at about 1.3 mB. Will that work??

Title: Re: BetterMost Banner Image Collection
Post by: Phillip Dampier on June 03, 2007, 11:00:15 pm
The wider they are the better - that seems to be the most important criteria so that people with very hi-res displays don't see the banner end and then re-start again.  The length is very limiting because the forum software covers up a lot of the image.  In general, the higher resolution the better because John can always re-render the image at a lower rate just before it goes up.  Thanks for the forthcoming contributions!

The banner image from June 7th 2008 was taken by me last summer in Kananaskis Country, one of the primary filming locations for Brokeback.  I'll have the full image available shortly - we're still tinkering with it because it's not coming out as sharp as I would have liked.

we have the regular pictures, and it is nice to have some that are indicative of the season, or the holidays.

I found a new scene for 2009.  The only odd thing about it will be mostly noticed by those using a widescreen monitor.  The peak of the hill is actually the dividing line between the end of the image, and a "mirror" of it.  One of the problems we've had is with images that are not widescreen enough, which causes them to repeat for a growing number of folks who are moving to wider screens.  This image wasn't wide enough either, but it was extended through a mirror trick, which is why there appears to be a lot of symmetry around that hill.

The gift boxes and some other issues with our holiday theme will be retired shortly, especially the too dark message editor preview mode.

I love the current banner too. That's a beautiful statue. For some reason I kept thinking it said "The Lost Cowboy". And I figured maybe he was blowing his horn so someone would go find him!

I just now realized it says "The Last Cowboy".

I don't know what's the matter with me. :P

I'd love to go back to Europe someday soon and start taking pictures like hell won't have it. There's beautiful things to photograph around every corner. :)

What a great banner the current one is!!

The two pics are soooo well chosen!

It's impossible not to notice they are taken in the very same spot.

Well done, someone!

Thanks, Lee. I made the banner but didn't do the work on the photo. It has been stored in my BBM collection for years.

I had just googled "cowboy diner" and that was the best photo!  Lee said it's pretty close to her, and that the steak and eggs are good (inexpensive too).

It's Davies' Chuck Wagon Diner on West Colfax Ave. in Lakewood, CO. The food is very good of its kind (I mean, it's diner food), and just inside the door is an antique barrister bookcase that is the envy of OCD and me. The diner folks use it to hold t-shirts.

I had to look up that one. Neat idea, to stack separate units into one bookcase! And they look beautiful with the glass doors on every unit.

Title: Re: BetterMost Banner Image Collection

Heath (Ennis), Jake (Jack), Michelle (Alma), Anne (Lureen)

Linda (Cassie), Kate (Alma Jr.), Roberta (Ma Twist), David (Randall), Peter (Pa Twist).

Maybe Anna (LaShawn) as well.

I'm thinking of a collage of the actors, but not in their roles.

Christmas in Swedish is jul, and July is juli.

So Christmas in July is jul i juli !

(no, we don't capitalise those words)

I thought Christmas in July was a southern hemisphere thing. In Australia (have not heard it mentioned much in NZ) it is a chance to have all the traditional hot Christmas foods. Where I lived in the Mountains behind Sydney it is advertised by hotels etc as a weekend and they have roast dinners, plum pudding, roaring log fires, mulled wine. These are not things so popular in the heat of December when seafood and salads and a day at the beach are more likely these days.

Over here, I think Christmas in July is more of a retail thing, a way to have sales and entice people into stores.

Sure enough, but it also sounds like a great excuse for a party.  :D
