Title: "Nightfall" by "Living in Transcendence"
Post by: twistedude on July 06, 2006, 12:13:58 am
Set in Germany, beginning  January, 1933, with Jack as a cabaret actor and Ennis a painter. (The carbaret is FABULOUS)

                    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3017065/1/

very sophisticated, it nervertheless inspired me to sing the second verse of "Lili Marlene" almost constantly for the past few days drivnig everyone bonkers.

I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying this story, Julie :)  And I've been going around singing a lot of Marlene Dietrich myself, so I can sympathize!

For anyone who's on LiveJournal the story can also be found here:

I won't say ANYBODY can write slash (like--I can't very well), but how many people can write about such a man-woman relastionship as in chapter 6? A caberet like in chapter 1? Ya had to be 10 to be in the Hitlerjugend--but what WAS the upper age limit? So we have here some of the 'disappointingly few' who resisted Hitler---will they, or will they just get out while the gettin's still good?

WHERE WILL THEY GO?

Oh yeah...slash is good, too...one problem: these two guys (whozzat?) see eye-to-eye on a lot of things besides sex...doesn't that count, too? Er, well, when you get around to it...

Ciomment on Live Journal. probably sick of my comments by now...

Sick of your comments?  Unlikely!  :D  I love getting comments, they're half the joy of writing a story sometimes ;)

Alma in this story is in the Bund Deutscher Madel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bund_Deutscher_M%C3%A4del
They had an upper age limit but they weren't that strict about it in practice.  They were also still picking up speed in 1933, they were not quite the large organization they were soon to become.

Thanks for all your feedback, I really appreciate it.  I've been putting a lot of research and time into this fic, so it's good to know that someone notices and appreciates it :)  Thanks Julie!

promise I'll never be impatient again.  Nicht so kalt jetzt...querry: Didn't Jack play Hindenberg IN DRAG? Or is that different than just plain acting in drag? Soon, nobody will be acting in drag...don't mean to rush you, but Einstein was long gone, and Weill and Brecht left in '33. Does Jack even KNOW he's Jewish? (Jake wore brown contact lenses for D.Darko--looked like a Jewish boy, for a change...)--I mean, I spent a year in Germany in '51, and only thought about being Jewish maybe 5 times; I'm sure OTHER P:EOPLE thiought about it, though..Oh well, Friends and Freedom...

Finally figured out "Too Busted Up" and left a review.  It all came to me while my compuer was in the shop... Ennis does not marry; Jack does not go to Texas and ruin his body, --so they both get drafted...thus follows (actually, precedes) the rest of your story...

dona nobis pacem.  Please, somebody...

Jack did not play Hindenburg in drag; Sabine tried to get him to, but he refused.  That's why he got some complaints about his performance.

Jack does know he's Jewish and that will be coming up in future chapters.  And don't worry about rushing me :)  I've pretty much plotted out this whole story and the results of Hitler's recent election will be rapidly visiible.

Too Busted Up will be updating soon, hopefully, and the next chapter will reveal much more about the plot.  It's a pretty convulted plotline that will unfold through flashbacks, but hopefully people will stick around to see it out :)

Y'Mean, I was wrong abiout Too Buasted Up? Gee, i was so inspired...

Sorry about thinking Jack did Hindenberg in drag...I thought he was just rejecting that Particulkar dress. Niko didn't throw him out after all....

Could you post a link to your "research" page? I've been told it's there, but can't seem to find it. Thanks.

Julie--it seems like FF.net hates me and doesn't like to send out half the PMs I write, it's most irritating.  And in regards to the Superman fanfiction--have you seen the latest movie, Superman Returns?  That's what my fic is based off of.  Hope you're well enough to go to Chicago this weekend!

June--Thanks so much dear, my temperature's down and I think I'm on the road to recovery now :)  Definitely going to get writing soon, taking a little break to do some lighthearted RPS but I won't leave Jack hanging there too long.  And thank you so much for the wonderful comments. :-*

Hey--modesty will get you nowhere! Chapter 8 of "Nighhtfall" is up.

(I can't leave reviews on ff, for some obscure reason)

It seems to me a little more opennesss on both sides is damn near imperitive...

A man who walked away from a prestigious art academy can't even think about walking away from his fiancee? Centuries ago, this was literally true--but surely not in the 20th!

Oh: Bob says the draft was still on from WW2, in 1964. I'm going to look it up now...

HERE YOU GO--Googled...

"Background of Selective Service
For more than 50 years, Selective Service and the registration requirement for America's young men have served as a backup system to provide manpower to the U.S. Armed Forces.

"President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 which created the country's first peacetime draft and formally established the Selective Service System as an independent Federal agency.

From 1948 until 1973, during both peacetime and periods of conflict, men were drafted to fill vacancies in the armed forces which could not be filled through voluntary means.

In 1973, the draft ended and the U.S. converted to an All-Volunteer military"

Sorry about that, just barely got the chapter posted before I had to be out the door. :)

Well, the conflict with Ennis won't be solely be about Alma.  But we'll see more of that in the next few chapters... and definitely there does need to be openness between them, they're just creating problems for themselves.  Silly boys. :P

Re: The Draft
Does it say whether there was a need to draft in 1963?  Because from what my co-author says, they were not actively drafting in 1963/4.
Title: Re: "Nightfall" by "Living in Transcendence"
Post by: twistedude on October 13, 2006, 02:08:28 am
In peacetime (after WW2), they drafted to keep a certain sized standing army intact...whether they were actively increasing ther wsize of the army (I believe they were sendsing guys to Vietnam as erarly as 1963!) or nopt, I don't know. Plenty on Google under "the draft."  Interesting ythat one of the two changes proulx made in the story after the puiblication in the New Yorker was to switch "miliytary serviuce" to "the draft..."

Ennis's description of Jack is so beautiful..I've been going around all day looking for people I knew, or even didn't know, with ears like butterfly wings...

There were men in Vietnam as early as '64, but I don't know about '63.  Like I told Sarah when we started writing the story, I didn't want to have to do any research for it since I do plenty of that for Nightfall :)  I PMed her the plot bunny because it was one I'd been tossing around in my head for awhile but didn't have the energy to pursue, at least not alone.  So she handles all that end of it.  And she's a PoliSci major so she's quite a bit more knowledgeable than me :)

Oh, and I've got about 1200 words for the next Nightfall chapter so I think it will be ready to post soon. :)

I've been lurking for quite a long time, looking into threads and what not.  I find this fic so intriguing because it feels so poetic, yet its set in such an unpoetic time period, that is, the part when the Nazi's come in.  Not so good.

We had an update a few weeks ago, but its been a drought for a while.  Sheera?  How's about an update?

Not really my most inspired chapter, but I'm hoping but as all these parts I'm trying to weave start coming together it will make more sense.  Plot and I aren't always the best of friends...

Chapter 9 is up---you just go to chapter 1 and march (if you'll pardon the exprerssion) down the list...how can a scene between Loreen and Jack be so sexy?
I was telling Sheera that under Mao (China, 1949-1976) some of the conscripted painters got themselves a classical education in art by being allowed into the locked museums "to practice my work" for the great Cultural Revolution...but of course Mao wasn't quite as  bad as The House Painter (as the Italians--those in their right minds)--called him.

Alma looms as more and more of a problem, because it's Jack who needs taking care of, and Ennis doesn't (as yet) even seem to be able to take care of himself...

More....s'il vous plait...

I've been a huge fan of Nightfall for a while. Its very unique and its very well written. I take german in HS so i know the words that aren't translated. Very good, and some parts feel so sensual, and romantic. I think the author (name is too long to type) is my favorite FF writer. I also loved The Words Would Not Come. Another favorite of mine that ends sweetly.

LOL!  I hadn't even been thinking that while writing it.  But she's most certainly on the women side of the orientation spectrum and he's on the man's, so nothing will be developing there unless they decide to surprise me ;)

It's fascinating to see how the same practices of indoctrination are used again and again throughout history (what you were saying about how Mao also got a lot of portraiture commissioned).  Interesting that in this case the artists actually benefitted, though!

Wow, thank you so much!  Brokeback is my first foray into fanfiction and it's been so rewarding, it's truly an honor that you would say that :)

Ahhh, interestingly enough I'm doing a re-write of that story.  It looks like I'll be adding in a lot more content and just re-posting the whole thing once I'm done--the editing bug bit me pretty badly!  I'm a little afraid of messing it up but I'm having it beta'd this time to make sure I don't :)

Sheera: I didn't mean "sexy" as in man-woman sex, I meant sexy in Jack's communication of his feelings about Ennis...sorry for the mixup!

Between yoiu and Jess (marakeshsparrow), I am kept so in awe of the writing springing from Brokeback. I think, in addition to a great shiort story, we owe Proulx a debt of gratitude for a  few budding great writers that might never have existed if it weren't for hers.

You guys make me ashamed to put words on paper...but I keep plugging along anyway!~

NEW CHAPTER UP---DEC. 24!

hey Sheera--LET US KNOW! New chapter of "Nightfall" is up...writing is great, situation ghastly....and a merry christmas to you, too! (No, PLEASE don't stop!)
I will give nothing away. I expressed my surprise and interest in my feedbacvk on ff.  You seem to be more or less paralleling Breokeback Mountaqin in some things--which weren't nearly as clear before. Your writing gets better all the time. Like Truman Capote, it's like ice crystals...

By the way (I read all your feedbnack on ff, now that I CAN): if you want to say "I am cold" in German, without saying "to me is cold," you can also say "ich friere." It's pretty colloqial, and is more like "Brrr..it's cold out" than "I'm cold."

"Mir ist kalt" is what he would have said....the German speaker is right.

POPSSIOBLE SPOILER--HOPE NOT.  BETTER NOT READ BEFORE NEW CHAPTER.

li9ttleguitar--but, while she's writing all thiose other stories (I think there're 30!), she's honing her skills for this one..which i dearly love.

Can't WAIT for the contiunuation of the conversation that ends the last chapter...what a GREAT idea (not the thing itself (Ding an sich!), but the disusdsion of it)...how can I get myself out of a misunderstanding without giving anything awasy? YURG . I mean, not the thing itself in this case. Jeez..did I blow it?

So so true about honing her skills. She is one of the few fan fic writers who's writing is almost flawless. The literary aspect of her writing blows me away. I keep meaning to start her other fics, can you recommend one?

LOL you didn't blow it! I had the same trouble when I was trying to write a post about this chapter... so I finally opted for just not saying anything about the plot all together  :)

her one shots are very interesting ( I particularly remember one in which two creatures are having sex, and one has very expressive wings.).  She frequently took three words from Annie Proulx' story, and built a little story on them. Sorry, no links. Go to  fanfiction.net, and type in "Living-in Transcendence," under "search,"and then go to her home page (if you're not already there), and see the-- it's 44!--stories listed, with brief descriptions. OR: just go to a link for this story on fanfiction.net, and click on her name, and I think you'll be there in a jiffy.

Many are quite dark, as dark as this one is at present--and may conclude darkly, I suppose....sniff...there sure a plenty of opportunities for two guys in Nazi German not to get together, if not get snuffed!

One of her most recent ones led me to comment: this one makes me worry about ther author! But anyone who can write like that should have plenty to live for!

her one shots are very interesting ( I particularly remember one in which two creatures are having sex, and one has very expressive wings.).
That particular drabble was about a long-lived human man and a winged man :)  They're from The Black Jewels Trilogy (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Jewels-Trilogy-Daughter-Darkness/dp/0451529014/sr=8-1/qid=1167290027/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/103-3480708-3849442?ie=UTF8&s=books).

One of her most recent ones led me to comment: this one makes me worry about ther author! But anyone who can write like that should have plenty to live for!
No need to worry about me!  That one-shot was written about a character who actually is dead.  It's from a television show called Dead Like Me, hence it's a large theme that the characters are constantly tackling.

And littleguitar--thank you so much!  My greatest hope is that my writing skills will continue to improve so I really appreciate your kind words.

And, if it's helpful, all my work is also indexed in my LJ here:
Memories Section (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=trascendenza)

Or, for just the BBM fics:
BBM Memories Section (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=trascendenza&keyword=BBM+Fanfiction&filter=all)

Up at the top you can choose to have all the entries organized by "description" and then they should be in order by series and whether they're canon/AU/AU!AU/etc.

And I can't promise anything, but I'm thinking that one of my New Year's resolutions will be to (try) and finish Nightfall in January.  January marks the month when I'll have been writing BBM fanfic for a year (I started last year on Jan. 13), so it seems like a good time to wrap up some WIPs. :)

Well, no way Nightfall's going to get finished in January, but here's a new chapter. :)
