I have been collecting Hummels for years. Back about 20 years ago I had roughly 50 of them, but I was forced to sell many of them when I ran into financial trouble, but I still have about a dozen Hummels. Recently I've been thinking about building up my collection again. I used to buy myself 2 Hummels a year - one on my birthday and another one at Christmas. One year I lucked out when I was at one of the shopping malls. A friend and I arrived at the mall just after it opened and I noticed one of the jewelry stores was going out of business. When we walked in there, they had about 15 Hummels marked down to 80 percent off! I bought them all! lol
Anyway, Hummels are porcelain figurines made in Germany. They are all hand painted and most are of small children. They are absolutely beautiful. I love their cute little round faces and big bright eyes. Below you will see my small Hummel collection, just remnants of what it used to be before I sold many of them. Betty, a good friend of mine who owned the donut shop I worked at years ago got me interested in Hummels. She had about 250 of them - two floor to ceiling curio cabinets FULL of Hummels. She made several trips to Germany in the 1970s and purchased most of her Hummels there, where they are about half the price as here in the US. Betty passed away the same year as my Mom. She was born the same year as my Dad (1931) and she was an amazing friend. We took many trips together, including two trips to Quebec, Canada!

Hummels are made by the Goebel Company located in Germany. They make many other things besides Hummels. To start off, since it is Christmas, I thought I'd show you three Goebel Christmas figurines I own. My Great Grandmother gave these to me for Christmas about 25 years ago.

They include a snowman, a Santa, and a nutcracker. The tallest one (Santa) stands roughly 3 inches tall. The snowman holds a wooden broom in his hand. The broom was lost for many years and we finally found the tiny broom down at the bottom of a box of Christmas decorations, so now the broom and owner have been reunited.
These figurines are NOT Hummels, but they are made by the same company, so I thought I would include them in this thread. :)

This Hummel figurine is of the Baby Jesus. This is the only piece from the Hummel Nativity scene I own. Someday I would like to buy the complete set. The baby is about 2 inches long. My friend Betty gave it to me one Christmas.
You can buy the Nativity Scene with only the figures of the Holy Family plus the stable, or you can buy the complete set which includes the Wise Men, angels, the little drummer boy, several villagers and all the animals.

You can tell the age of the Hummel by the marking on the base. This marking with the Goebel name and a small bee just above indicates this particular Hummel was manufactured in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Goebel changes the mark every 5 to 10 years (or at least they used to). The black squiggly marks over on the right is the artist's initials plus the date (80 for 1980). The artist always initials each piece he or she paints. They don't always include the year though.

My Great Grandmother gave me the following figurine (she gave me three Hummels in total) and it has a small story behind it. The name of the figurine is "Going To Grandma's".
My sister was born exactly one year and ten days after me. Mom and Dad took the two of us down to Cincinnati that Christmas so my Great Grandmother could see Susan for the first time. Before we left, Mom stopped off at L.S. Ayres (a local department store here in town. It no longer is in business) and purchased this figurine to give to my Great Grandmother. Many years later, she decided to move into a nursing home because she could really no longer take care of herself and keep up with the cleaning and other things. Each Christmas she gave me one of her Hummels as a Christmas gift. She wanted to make certain her Hummels stayed in the family and she knew I would take care of them. The very last Hummel she gave me was this one, the same one Mom and Dad gave to her many years earlier.

Here is a picture of the base. You can see the Goebel mark is very different than the one on the base of the Baby Jesus. This mark is called the "stylized bee" and it indicates the figurine was made in the late 1950s to early 1960s. The brown stuff up near the top is all that remains of the original price tag. I think Mom paid $26.00 for it back in 1963.

I purchased this Hummel at WH Block's, another local department store that is no longer in business. They had an artist from Goebel come and talk about the company and Hummels, and they had many different Hummel figurines for sale. This Hummel is actually a bank! You can see the key dangling from it. It is called "Little Thrifty" and it stands 5 inches tall...

The artist even signed my Hummel! God, he was cute! He was about 30 years old and he didn't speak any English at all. An elderly lady came with him and translated everything he said from German to English. Here is a picture of his autograph on the base of the Hummel. The original artist's initials are up at the top left of the base. Everything else written is by him. I'll never forget how cute he was - dark hair, a muscular body, and totally gorgeous!!

This Hummel is called "Runaway" and he is about 6 inches tall. He's a cute little guy, isn't he? My parents gave him to me one Christmas. I had my eye on him for a long time and somehow my Mom knew to buy him for me. I never talked about him to her nor Dad, so I really don't know how she figured it out. But there he was one Christmas, all wrapped up in a box and a bow!

This is the other side of the figurine. He carries a mandolin type instrument under his arm. I've always wondered what he's running away from? I'd like to think he's off on an innocent adventure and will be back in time for his supper. :)

I joined the Goebel Collector's Club for several years, and they gave me a Hummel for joing their club. This little figurine stands about 2 1/2 inches tall. She is a limited edition Hummel. Goebel only manufactured her for one year and then they broke the mold. She was not sold in stores, you could only get her through the club. The little paper next to her came with the figurine but I can only read part of what it says. Maybe one of our German members could translate it for us if they peek at this thread.

This Hummel is actually an advertising sign for a store. Even though it is a sign, it is still considered a Hummel figurine. They are very rare and difficult to obtain because the retailers do not like to part with them. This is one of the Hummels I bought at the jewelry store that was going out of business.

Here is another Hummel sign. I bought this one at Cafe Heidelburg, a German bakery and gift shop here in Indianapolis. The owners are from Germany and it's fun to go there because the owners and many of the customers can be heard speaking German. They also play German music on the store speakers. You really feel like you are in Germany when you walk in there. They sell all kinds of things including food (canned goods, chips, cookies and other things) from Germany and lots of German collectables including Hummels!
I can't remember why he was selling his sign, but I bought it without hesitating. These signs are very difficult to find...

The little figure on the sign is called "Merry Wanderer" and he is one of the very first (and most popular) of the Hummel figurines. I used to have Merry Wanderer but I sold him with many of my other Hummels years ago. :'(
At least I have him on the sign!

Hummels are not always figurines! They also make Hummel bells, Hummel Christmas ornaments, Hummel ashtrays (who in their right mind would put their cigarette out in a Hummel?!), Hummel lamps, music boxes, holy water fonts, and plates!!
I bought this Hummel plate the year my niece Christy was born, in honor of her birth - 1979. It is roughly 8 inches from one side of the plate to the other.

This next one is not actually a Lladro. It is made by the Lladro company, but it is called NAO. You can find these all over Spain. They are not quite as expensive as the Lladro figurines. We managed to find very good deals on all these figurines though, and in Spain you can purchase Lladros for roughly half of what they sell for here in the US. This NAO figurine is quite large, about 10 or 11 inches tall. This one reminded Mom of me and my sister when we were small kids...

David, interesting thread! One of my sisters started collecting Hummels years ago, but she didn't get too far. I don't believe she has more than a dozen. (She got married and had twins, and then Real Life interfered.) When my nephews were very little, the Hummels ended up in a curio cabinet at my parents' house for safekeeping, but that was years ago. I assume they're back at my sister's house, but unfortunately she doesn't have them on display. I'm going to ask her about them.
Thanks for posting the pictures of the Hummels in your collection. The bank one is cool. I like the ones with the signs, too. I can see why you bought those. Good luck in expanding your collection, if that's what you decide to do.

A little info from Wiki:
Hummel or the trademark M.I. Hummel is a series of ceramic figurines based on the illustrations by the German nun Maria Innocentia Hummel (neé Berta Hummel) .
Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel's works were discovered by Franz Goebel after a small publisher began printing her artwork as postcards. Goebel started production of the figurines under the authorization of the convent of Siessen. Although sister Hummel died in 1946 from tuberculosis, Goebel carried her legacy of her design.
The first Hummel figurines were sold in 1935. The figurines are all based on the drawings and paintings of children by sister Hummel. Though much of the art was done in the 1930s, the newer figurines have adopted a more contemporary appearance.
In addition to figurines of children, there are figurines of saints - a stylistic departure from the figurines of playful children.
Goebel announced on 2008-06-18 that the Hummel line will be discontinued. (Oh, no, David!) :o
At the Goebel company, Hummel figurines are made out of porcelain. The body is bisque fired, dipped in glaze, and painted using oil and turpentine based colors which contain metallic oxides as pigments.
All Hummel Figurines have backstamps that determine the year of production.

My mom has a collection of Hummels: a cabinet full of the typical children, a few religious ones (Madonnas and the like), and a complete nativity scene, even with manger.
Some of them have little paper labels with their titles. My favorite was two little children, a boy and a girl, under the protection of a guardian angel. It's pretty big.

This is terrible news! :'(
I'm surprised it happened, although I can understand WHY it happened. The economy is so bad right now, few people have the extra money for luxury items such as Hummels. I've been reading some reports about it on the Internet. They said the factory has many Hummels at the factory, and there will be plenty to go around for quite some time. So, I guess that is good news... sort of. :-\
I know they discontinued the Hummels during World War II. But they started up again after the war ended. Maybe after the economy gets better, they will begin producing them once again. They are popular all over the world and they've been manufacturing them since the early 1900s.

The Hummel up at the top is called "Heavenly Protection" and it is one of my favorites. My friend Betty owned that one. It is very beautiful, isn't it?
That second one is the Nativity Scene I was talking about, although I've also seen it with a few more pieces - the little drummer boy, a boy playing a recorder or clarinet type instrument (called "Little Tooter" in the Hummel line) and several others. Krieg Brothers Catholic Supply Co here in Indy had that Nativity Scene for sale years ago and it was on sale too - 30 percent off. I thought about it and thought about it and eventually I talked myself out of buying it. Now I'm very sorry I made that decision. I should have bought it! >:(

I have never heard of Hummels. Reading this thread has been quite a learning experience for me. They are certainly very cute. I can see why you're so keen on collecting them, David.
I collect figurines of gods.
I have about 50 figurines. They are primarily Egyptian, with some Hindu, Buddhist and Greek also. Some of them are classy and some quite trashy.
The largest is a splendid statue of the falcon-headed Egyptian sun god, Ra. He's about 60cm (2ft) tall and stands in the middle of my dining table, from whence he holds court. He is a very majestic presence in my home. The smallest figurine is a tiny, beautifully detailed figurine of the elephant-headed Hindu god, Ganesh. Traditionally, Ganesh should be located inside one's front door, facing the door, to guard your home. And that's where my Ganesh is located (I have more than one Ganesh).

I've just been through this thread again, trying to decide which Hummel is my favourite (not easy to decide), and I think it might be this little chap, the Runaway. Having said that, however, I also love the guardian angel with the two small children, and I love the nutcracker too - he looks so mischievous.
The Runaway is so joyous. I have no doubt he'll be home for his supper, David. I remember setting out on just such adventures when I was about his age, complete with sandwiches and lemonade, with my dog in tow. We had so many wonderfully exciting adventures without once leaving the back garden. :D

I tend to favor the jewel tones in the stemware - ruby, cobalt, amethyst, and emerald.
I started this circa 1992, mostly stopped the collecting by 2002, but now I tote around a small brown scallop-like seashell and cobalt blue marble in my pocket most of the time.
We used to actually use the stuff on a regular basis. Maybe having a dinner party could be a goal for 2009. ???

I'm not a wine expert. Not overly fond of white wines or anything with bubbles in it, but I do LOVE a good red, especially Merlot. My favourite Australian wine is Wolf Blass Eaglehawk Merlot. I can also recommend anything from Margaret River in Western Australia (it's a big wine growing region) - Heath's home state. I've sampled many Margaret River reds over the years and all have been GOOD! :D

Traditionally, Ganesh should be located inside one's front door, facing the door, to guard your home. And that's where my Ganesh is located (I have more than one Ganesh).

Glad you like them, Matt. I've got a few figurines of Ganesh but none are of any great artistic significance. That doesn't stop me from loving them, though. Ganesh is such a jolly, chubby, approachable little fellow. You can't help but like him. I'll line-up my Ganesh figurines for a photo-op shortly, Matt, and post the pic here for you. Will also do the same with the Ra.

Thoth is the name given by the Greeks to the Egyptian god Djeheuty (Tehuti). Thoth was the god of wisdom, inventor of writing, patron of scribes and the divine mediator. He is most often represented as a man with the head of an ibis, holding a scribal palette and reed pen. He could also be shown completely as an ibis or a baboon.
As with most Egyptian deities there were many different stories regarding the parentage of Thoth. Many sources call him the son of Ra, but one tradition has him springing forth from the head of Seth. This latter story is reminiscent of the birth of the Greek goddess Athena, who like Thoth was the patron divinity of wisdom.
Myths concerning Thoth show him as a divinity whose counsel is always sought. His most significant role is during the battles of Horus and Seth. Thoth is a staunch supporter of Horus and his mother Isis, maintaining that Horus' claim to the throne is just and the murderous Seth has no right to the kingship of Egypt. Elsewhere Thoth is a reliable mediator and peacemaker. When the goddess Tefnut had a dispute with her father Ra and absconded to Nubia, it was Thoth that the sun-god sent to reason with her and bring her home. Thoth was also present at the judgement of the dead. He would question the deceased before recording the result of the weighing of the deceased's heart. If the result was favorable Thoth would declare the deceased as a righteous individual who was worthy of a blessed afterlife.
Thoth was also a lunar deity, and whatever form he took he wore a lunar crescent on his head. Some Egyptologists think that the Egyptians identified the crescent moon with the curved beak of the ibis. It is also suggested that the Egyptians observed that baboon was a nocturnal (i.e. lunar) animal who would greet the sun with chattering noises each morning.
As he was messenger of the gods Thoth was identified by the Greeks with their own god Hermes. For this reason Thoth's center of worship is still known to us today as Hermopolis.

My Indian friend, Kokila, would tell you that Ganesh definitely decided where he wanted to be located in your home, Paul. ;) :) She has a very strong devotion to Ganesh and tells me that Hindus always address Ganesh first, before praying to any other god or goddess, including the greatest of the gods, such as Ganesh's father, Lord Shiva, for example. The reason for this is because Hindus believe that Ganesh is the god who makes things happen. He opens doors. Because he is so beloved by all the other Hindu deities, they listen to him when he whispers your requests in their ear, on your behalf. Similar to the way Catholics ask the saints to intercede on their behalf.

Wow Kerry thats a beautiful statue of Thoth. I really like reading historical fiction so I know a little about Thoth, but I did not know amongst other things that Thoth was the name given by the Greeks. I am looking forward to seeing your pictures of Ganesh when you have time.
When I eventually buy another house and travel some more I intend to bring back lots of shall I say "ethnic" pieces. I've had a look through my collection and I counted four Ganesh figurines. As I say, none of them are of any great artistic significance, but I love having them all the same. Just took this photo of my four Ganesh figurines. All were gifts, except for the bronze on the sandalwood base, second from right, which I bought for myself. The silver and the bronze both face my front door, along with various other deities. The figurine second from left is located in my bedroom and the one at far right sits atop my fridge, in the kitchen, which is where this photo was taken. I bought this figurine of Kuan Yin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, many years ago in Sydney's Chinatown. She stands 28cm tall (just under one foot) and is made of hand-carved amber.

The Goddess Kwan Yin (also spelled Quan Yin, Kuanyin, and Guanyin) is one of the deities most frequently seen on altars in Buddhist temples. In Sanskrit, her name is Padma-pâni, or "Born of the Lotus." Kwan Yin, alone among Buddhist gods, is loved rather than feared and is the model of Chinese beauty. Regarded by Buddhists as the Goddess of Mercy, she was originally male until the early part of the 12th century and has evolved since that time from her prototype, Avalokiteshvara, "the merciful lord of utter enlightment," an Indian bodhisattva who chose to remain on earth to bring relief to the suffering rather than enjoy for himself the ecstasies of Nirvana. One of the several stories surrounding Kwan Yin is that she was a Buddhist who, through great love and sacrifice during life, had earned the right to enter Nirvana after death. However, like Avlokiteshvara, while standing before the gates of Paradise, she heard a cry of anguish from the earth below. Turning back to earth, she renounced her reward of bliss eternal and in its place found immortality in the hearts of the suffering.

I bought this figurine of the Egyptian Sun God, Ra, some years ago and he usually holds court from the centre of my dining table; though, for this photo-op, I persuaded him to temporarily take up a perch on top of the fridge in the kitchen. He didn't seem to mind. He was very dignified about it. Regal, even. ;) :D
He's 53cm tall (approx 21 inches) and I got him from a nearby Egyptian bazaar here in Sydney.

The Egyptian gods are my favourites. Egypt has fascinated me from an early age. I even developed my own hieroglyphics when I was at school. I like the Greek gods too, especially Apollo. Lots of the Greek gods were bisexual and had male and female lovers. My favourite Roman god is the little known Antinous. He had been the lover of the Roman Emperor, Hadrian. He tragically drowned in the Nile at a very young age. Hadrian was in such deep mourning following his death, he had Antinous deified and commissioned many statues of him to be made and temples built throughout the Empire. Here he is. Isn't he gorgeous?

Rima the Jungle Girl: South American, Rima is a female Tarzan. Has excellent combat skills, and can communicate with animals.
Wonder Twins: Brother and sister from the planet Exxor. When they touch thier hands together, it "activates" their shape shifting powers (called their 'Exxor powers'). Zan can turn into any water form (steam, clouds, ice, tornadoes) and Jayna can turn into any animal form.
Firestorm: The nuclear man, Firestorm is actually two men in one body. He can change the molecular make up of objects.

This is the great Egyptian god, Khnum. Though he doesn't have the same glam street-cred as some of his colleagues - Ra, Osiris, Amon and Isis, for instance - he was, nonetheless, a very important deity to the ancient Egyptians. It was the ram-headed god, Khnum, who fashioned the mortal bodies of all ancient Egyptians from clay, on his potter's wheel. Khnum wears one of the most flamboyant headdresses of all the Egyptian gods, the plumed Atef crown comprising of gilt horns, solar disc and ostrich plumes. He carries in his left hand a gilt sceptre symbolising strength and power. I bought this figurine some years ago at an Egyptian bazaar here in Sydney. It is 40cm (16 inches) tall.

I agree, David. They are absolutely gorgeous. Probably the most stunning of all the gods IMHO is the Greek god, Apollo. He was an absolute knock-out! Drop-dead-gorgeous! And he was very fond of handsome young mortal men! I particularly love the legend of Apollo & Hyacinthus. Here's an account I found on the internet:
Apollo was passionately in love with a youth named Hyacinthus. He accompanied him in his sports, carried the nets when he went fishing, led the dogs when he went to hunt, followed him in his excursions in the mountains, and neglected for him his lyre and his arrows. One day they played a game of quoits together, and Apollo, heaving aloft the discus, with strength mingled with skill, sent it high and far. Hyacinthus watched it as it flew, and excited with the sport ran forward to seize it, eager to make his throw, when the quoit bounded from the earth and struck him in the forehead. He fainted and fell. The god, as pale as himself, raised him and tried all his art to staunch the wound and retain the flitting life, but all in vain; the hurt was past the power of medicine. As when one has broken the stem of a lily in the garden it hangs its head and turns its flowers to the earth, so the head of the dying Hyacinthus, as if too heavy for his neck, fell over on his shoulder. "Thou diest, Hyacinthus," so spoke Apollo, "robbed of thy youth by me. Thine is the suffering, mine the crime. Would that I could die for thee! Your facebook pics are beautiful, Kelda. Many of them are so beautifully atmospheric. They look quite misty. I'm guessing, however, that it's probably not mist in India. Is it heat haze? Lots of animals to be seen - elephants and monkeys and cows. Spectacularly beautiful monumental buildings. :D

Newly founded Manufaktur Ršdental GmbH plans to resume M.I. Hummel production in February, initially with around 30 employees.
The reorganisation of Goebel Porcelain Factory is now complete
Rodental/Frankfurt-Hochst, 06 February 2009. M.I. Hummel figurines have found a new home in an old location. Starting in February, the production of M.I. Hummel figurines is to resume in Ršdental after ceasing in October 2008. The figurines have been popular throughout the world for over 70 years and are based on designs by Maria Innocentia Hummel. The resumption of production is possible thanks to a new owner who has taken over all the necessary rights and manufacturing facilities from former manufacturer Goebel Porcelain Factory. Manufaktur Ršdental GmbH, which has been newly founded for the purpose, plans to resume operation initially with around 30 employees and will continue the tradition of M.I. Hummel production in Ršdental. "We have completed our restructuring by selling the M.I. Hummel business. Goebel is now exclusively focussed on our very successful glass and porcelain accessories for the home and as gifts," says Kay Michel, Managing Director of Goebel Porcelain Factory on signing the contract of sale with Manufaktur Ršdental GmbH.

Just when you think there will be no more Super Friends stuff to collect, Fan Sets puts out a line of pins.
So far they've released Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, Flash, Hawkman, Apache Chief, Firestorm, and Cyborg.
I contacted them, and they said for the rest of the year, the plan to release Green Lantern, Black Vulcan, Samurai, El Dorado, Hawkwoman, Rima the Jungle Girl, Atom, and the Wonder Twins.

For some reason, most female superheroes are referred to as "girl". The obvious exception is Wonder Woman. We have Supergirl, Hawkgirl (who later became Hawkwoman), Batgirl, Power Girl, Marvel Girl, and there are others.
Rima is a full grown woman, who is basically a female Tarzan. She swings from vines (when available), is a skilled tracker, and can communicate with animals.

When my dad was in the hospital last winter, I was looking through his desk (which used to be my desk/the desk in my old bedroom) to make sure I knew where everything important was located, in case I needed it. In the bottom of one drawer I found a small stack of old 45s, most with the little plastic piece you could buy to put in the center so that you could play the 45 on a turntable with a narrow spindle (the kind used for LPs).
Most of those records dated from around 1980, give or take a few years, but one went all the way back to "Harper Valley PTA," by Jeannie C. Riley.
IIRC, the stack had a couple Hall and Oates songs. I'm sure I remember the theme from the TV show "The Greatest American Hero," and also a song called "Key Largo" ("We had it all/Just like Bogie and Bacall") by someone named Bertie Higgins. I think there was also a single of "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)," by Rupert Holmes.
I'm not even sure I've got anything to play those records anymore. I'll have to remember to check if my turntable has a 45 speed. They could be played on my old stereo (still in my dad's house), but I don't know if that even works anymore.

The Wonder Twins (Zan & Jayna) first appeared in the comic book and tv cartoon "The Super Friends" in the 70s. They were shape changers who could only use their powers by coming into contact with each other. By the mid 80s, both the cartoon and comic were cancelled. They reappeared in the comic series "Extreme Justice" during the 90s, but the book was cancelled a few issues after they reappeared. In 2002 they appeared in the series Young Justice, but once again, the series was cancelled not long after their first appearance.
Now they've reappeared in a new 6 issue mini-series called "Wonder Twins". We don't know much about them now, other than Superman took them from their home planet (Exxor) at the request of their father, after they had done something. They are now interns at the Hall of Justice, working under the watchful eye of Superman and the other Justice League members.
Issue #1 was released today, with two different covers, so I got both.

Commentary on the US school system and prison system. Zan & Jayna go on a class trip to a prison, because they can see it for free, which is the funding the school can afford. The twins explain that there is no crime on their planet of Exxor, so they don't understand what prisons are, really. They also question why prisoners are caught and released over and over.

So, in June of 2017, Funko Pop released a sent of Wonder Twins pops, which I (of course) had to have. Not long after I got the Zan & Jayna pops, I was given Superman and Flash as a Christmas gift.
I don't know why it never hit me (until now) to collect the 'pops' of all the other Super Friends.
I've been using parts of my "disposable income" to get the rest of the pops.

Well, most of those characters are in various versions of The Justice League of America, not The Super Friends.
The Super Friends cartoon was based on the JLA, and when it became popular, a Super Friends comic appeared, but it ran for only 47 issues (about 4 years) from 1976 - 1981.
For a while, in the 90s, I was collecting the "X" books, the comics that featured the stories of the X-Men. The titles I was actively collecting was Uncanny X-Men, X-Force, X-Factor, X-men, New Mutants, Generation X, EXcalibur. That was getting too expensive for me, so I stopped.

I guess it really is true, if something is out there, somebody will collect it.
I was on eBay last evening, and I decided to check out the "store" of a seller from whom I had bought some things in the past. Turns out that among the things this guy has for sale are issues of the old International Male and Undergear clothing catalogs. :laugh: Based on the username, I assume the seller is a guy. Undergear was a sort of spin-off of International Male.
There used to be a joke that whenever a guy came out of the closet, he immediately got on the mailing list for those catalogs. :laugh: That's the sort of catalogs these were. The models were all drop-dead gorgeous hotties, and the merchandise included lots of skimpy underwear, swimwear, and workout clothes that only a gay man could love or wear. Sometimes I even wondered how even some gay man would wear some of the clothes in those catalogs.
They did have other clothes, too. Yes, I was a customer, and the first thing I bought from International Male was a short-sleeved cotton shirt in a kind of slate blue color with vertical white pinstripes. I loved that shirt; I wore it until it finally wore out.
A couple of anecdotes:
Back when spandex was "big" for workout gear, International Male sold lots of spandex tights, bike shorts, and such. In one catalog, the guy who was modeling one of the pairs of tights had an obvious crotch bulge. The same picture subsequently appeared in the Undergear catalog--except that the crotch bulge had been removed. :laugh: Thing was, I'm pretty sure this was before Photoshop, and whoever removed the crotch bulge from the picture had done an imperfect job; if you looked closely enough, you could see the "ghost" of the crotch bulge. :laugh:
Anybody remember "the puffy shirt" from an episode of Seinfeld? International Male featured that shirt for a couple of years. :laugh: I recognized it as soon as I saw the Seinfeld episode and nearly fell down laughing.
Some of the models went on to successful acting careers. Cameron Mathison and Shemar Moore come immediately to mind. When I did the first clean-out, I was looking at the cover of one particular issue of International Male, and the cover boy looked vaguely familiar. At that time the catalog featured a one- or two-paragraph bio of the cover model. Well, that guy on the cover should have looked familiar: It was a young Kevin Sorbo, who went on to star as Hercules in a TV series in, I guess, the early aughts (oughts?).
There was a time in my life when I was almost pathologically unable to throw out a catalog or magazine with a cover guy I felt was really hot. I held on to those catalogs for years until I had a box full of them. Finally,about 10 years ago, maybe more, when I was doing a winter clean-out, I faced up to the fact that I never looked at any of these catalogs, so I got rid of most of them. If I'd ever imagined they would become collectibles, I would have held onto all of them! Then, when I finally got a printer that was also a scanner, I scanned the covers of the issues I had kept that I particularly liked, and I got rid of the last of the catalogs. Boy, was that a stupid move! :laugh:

It's a hardcover book called "Super Friends - Saturday Morning Comics" and is a full color collection of the Super Friends comic series that ran from 1977-1982. This is volume 1 (Issues #1 - #26). Volume 2 will be released later this year, and collect issues #27 - #47, when the series ended.

It's buyer beware now with books. I ordered The Reluctant Dragon by Graham Greene for my grandsons. I had seen a copy in the church library that was beautiful with an ornate illustration of a dragon on the front cover and high quality printing, papers, and color illustrations inside. When it arrived, it was a slim paperback, staple stitched with a photo of the cover on the front, and a very sloppy, amateurish layout with no separations of the chapters and not a single illustration inside. I complained and the bookstore gave me a credit, but why were they selling it anyway? They said that stories in the public domain were being reproduced in low quality by an overseas company owned by Amazon.
I also ordered two copies of a book I have called The Great Adventure of Wo Ti about a cat that jumps over the wall of the Emperor's Palace in Beijing and terrorizes the prized carp who live in the pond. THe books were $17 each so I thought they would be of high quality. But no. Slim paperbacks with flimsy covers, smaller size and the illustrations, which are the highlight of the book, are all in black and white! I don't even know who to complain to about this terrible situation! Have you ever had that problem, friend Chuck?

I do know there are a number of action figures out there, that are just repaint custom made figures, and not real licensed figures.

Allow me to explain.
The Super Friends debuted in 1973, and the line-up looked like this.

It was the 5 main heroes, and their sidekicks, the "Jr. Super Friends", Wendy, Marvin, and their pet Wonder Dog. They had no powers, and were just basically hanging out with the Super Friends, with no explanation. They weren't even given last names. Their presence was explained like this:
Their function on the show was to stand around, ask questions, get captured (usually after finding the criminal's hideout by mistake), get rescued by main Super Friends, and then help explain the 'moral' of the episode.
Comic book readers tend to look for more depth in their characters, so the characters were given origins and last names, and the story of being trained to be crime fighters. The show was cancelled and aired in reruns numerous times, and in 1976 became a surprise hit at that point. 1977 was going to bring a new season, but writers of the cartoon and comic complained about trying to write stories that featured these non-powered characters, so in 1977, the show was renewed as "The All New Super Friends", with Wendy and Marvin gone with no explanation, replaced by the shape-shifting Wonder Twins.
In the comic book, a story was done where Wendy & Marvin graduated to crime-fighter status, but opted to go to college before starting careers in crime fighting.

The same seller had an issue of a magazine I'd never heard of, Faces International, from summer 1983. The cover boy was John Schneider, of Dukes of Hazzard fame (a show I never watched, BTW). In 1983, OMG he was hot!

No, I don't have a case, I only put ornaments out on my tree at Christmas time.
As for the retro look, that version of Aquaman first appeared in 1941, and pretty much looked that way until the late 80s or so.
The Wonder Woman ornament is based on a famous pose that Lynda Carter struck for the TV show.

The Trade Paperbacks (TPB) for the Wonder Twins maxi-series are complete now.
The first book ("Activate") was released in November of 2019 and collects the first 6 issues of the 12 issue run. The second book ("The Fall & Rise of The Wonder Twins") was released this month.

HeroClix is a collectible miniatures game that uses the Clix system that centers on the world of superhero comic books, especially the Marvel and DC Comics universes. Players construct teams of comic book heroes, villains, or characters from various video games series such as Street Fighter, Gears of War, and Halo and engage in a turn-by-turn battle on grid maps based on various storyline locations. The game was originally designed and produced by WizKids, but was discontinued in November 2008 when WizKids owner Topps shut down their HeroClix line. In September 2009, collectible toy producer National Entertainment Collectibles Association (NECA) purchased some of the WizKids' intellectual property from Topps, including the HeroClix rights and then soon after began to produce and sell new HeroClix series.
I happened to find a few pics of these HeroClix mini figures, and found Superman and Wonder Woman, and it made me wonder if perhaps I could find all of the characters from the Super Friends cartoon. They did not have all of the characters, but they did have most, so I found them all on ebay and bid on them. The last one arrived yesterday, on my birthday.

There is a company named FanSets that makes metallic pins of various characters.
They have pins for Big Bang Theory, Harry Potter, Scooby Doo, Rick & Morty, the Batman TV show from the 60s, various Star Trek lines, and a number of DC Comics lines for Justice League, All Star Squadron, Legion of Super Heroes, and others.
I've managed to collect a number of pins of heroes who appeared on Super Friends.

(I write this because for work I recently had to view a short video about racism directed at Native Americans/First Nations/Indigenous Peoples. It was really eye-opening.)

I can help you out with this.
In 1977, The All New Super Friends Hour debuted, and it included three new "diversity" characters, added because the majority of the characters were white. The new characters included a Japanese man, a black man, and a Native American.
While it seemed to be a step in the right direction, the animators and writers didn't bother to come up with secret identities for them, or even origin stores (Apache Chief did get one later). Even their names were problematic, as they were named after aspects of their ethnicity rather than their powers.
The black man could turn himself into electricity and shoot electricity from his hands. He was Black Vulcan. The Japanese man could turn into the wind, turn invisible and turn himself into fire. He was Samurai. The Native American could grow to 50 feet tall. He was Apache Chief.
Their powers were also ill-defined. Samurai could change into all of those things, instead of one thing. In later episodes, Apache Chief grew much larger than 50 feet tall, in one episode becoming bigger than planet Earth. Black Vulcan started to only change his bottom half into electricity to fly, instead of turning his entire body into a bolt of lightning.
Later, in the 80s, a 4th character was introduced. A man from South America who could teleport, create illusions, and use telepathy (again, a multiple of ill-defined powers) and he was named El Dorado.
Here is a two minute clip that gives the origin of Apache Chief, and his nemesis, Giganta.
A later cartoon called Justice League resurrected the three diversity characters, but gave them names that matched their abilities as well as their cultures. Black Vulcan became "Juice". Samurai became "Wind Dragon" and Apache Chief became "Long Shadow".

The next cans that are being released are for the Wonder Twins, they are going to be released in September. I've pre-ordered them.
Each can comes separately. The promo images show the twins as they traditionally appear, and the variant figures are based on the Super Friends episode "Attack of the Vampire", so I could get two traditional looking figures, two "Wonder Twins as vampires" figures, or one of each. It's total luck of the draw.

After a long day of work, I arrived home to some Super Friends.

The larger figure is a Funko Pop of Atom. He can shrink himself down to microscopic size. The pins are of Black Vulcan (can fly, shoot electricity from his hands) and Samurai (turn himself into the wind, into fire, or invisible).

"Before" and "after" of The Teen Titans. These characters were sidekicks of the established heroes in the DC Comics universe. The 'after' is when they were no longer teens, and took on new names and costumes.
Before (clockwise from top) Aqualad (Aquaman's sidekick), Wondergirl (Wonder Woman's sidekick), Speedy (Green Arrow's sidekick), Robin (Batman's sidekick) and Kid Flash (Flash's sidekick).

What is a meeple?
A "meeple" is a little wooden (or plastic) pawn used in modern day board gaming to represent a player. It originated in the wonderful tile-placement game Carcassonne. "Meeple" is believed to be a combination of the words "my" and "people."
There was a line of meeples in the images of DC super heroes, so I managed to collect a few.

Usually players in games will have groups of them and refer to them as "meeples" instead of saying "my people".

Two of my Madonna albums came loose, and since I initially hung them on the wall, she released two other albums, I needed to take down the ones that were still up, and then rearrange them into a new pattern on the wall.
I finally got everything done this evening.
I didn't hang them slanted, my phone was tilted slightly when I took the pic, and didn't want to retake it. LOL

I was never able to find any confirmation of that. I know they're in the movie together, so it could be.
