Title: What's Your Dream Job?
Post by: Kerry on January 28, 2009, 01:52:34 am
What's Your Dream Job?

When officials at Australia's "Tourism Queensland" published  an online posting  for a "dream job" as caretaker of Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, the agency's website crashed after receiving more than 1 million hits in three days. The job, which pays $100,000 for a six-month stint, involves just 12 hours of "work" each month. Duties include swimming, fishing, snorkeling, producing a blog extolling the area's beauty and fetching mail.

Is being Hamilton Island's caretaker your idea of a "dream job"?

Classical pianist probably. Or cellist or violinist. There's no future in it though. Not unless you are really really REALLY good. Which I'm not. At all. But it would be my dream job. I'd love the traveling aspect of it too. :)

My dream job would be....to be rich enought to not have to work. I´d spend all my time traveling, writing and reading fan fiction.

Kerry. Rule of thumb. If you create a poll, you MUST vote in it. Okay? ;) ;D

So that's the rule okay?  Live it. Love it. Remember it.

And that goes for the REST OF YOU too! ;)

My interests are photography (of people mostly), mental illnesses (don't ask!), drawing/painting, travelling, world music and cinema. So I voted for doctor (psychiatrist), movie star (not mega movie star, just a regular very good actor (à la Peter Sarsgaard, Jeffrey Wright, Thomas Kretschmann), not totally forgotten though with challenging roles), famous artist (painter or humanitarian photographer) and other (indie, acoustic, folk singer, songwriter, musician)…. Pfft.. the list is longer than I thought it would be..  ;D

Edit: oh no - I didn't vote for all these, because I can only vote for one.. then it will be famous artist.

Ah, many of those jobs lend themselves to the romantic...

Artist, author, poet, professor, actor, farmer, explorer, musician...It's hard to choose just one!

Ballet dancer. It's what I was going to be doing until age 17 when arthritis set in. Preferably prima ballerina with the the English National Ballet.  I had a place at ballet school, and a little bit of me died when I had to accept that the arthritis had taken my dream away.
Still I have lots of interesting careers, so I can't grumble.

I voted other - wealthy and retired.  Then I can be whatever I'd like.

Every time I read the title to this thread, I keep hearing that guy on Hollywood Blvd. in the opening scene of "Pretty Woman" saying,

"What's your dream?"

Since we could only vote for one, I picked parent & homemaker.  If I could pick two, I would love to be a philanthropist on a bigger scale.

I voted for tropical island resort caretaker.  Sounds nice to be able to be there and live there full time.  I love those tropical breezes, and I love tropical island resorts!

I chose "pilot," because it's the road not taken. As a little girl, I wanted to be an astronaut, not as farfetched as it sounds, as my father quite literally was a NASA rocket scientist. Like a lot of girls, I had trouble with math around the age of 13, more to do with a succession of bad teachers than lack of aptitude--but it was the first time that something didn't come easily to me, and I had not developed the coping skills to deal with it.
Even so, I made it through high school with decent enough grades that a lot of colleges were very keen, and I got an offer to go to UCLA on an NROTC scholarship. I brushed off the recruiter as soon as he told me there were no female fighter pilots, and never let him finish telling me that by the time I finished all my schooling, the policies would probably have changed, and with my engineering degree in hand, I would be in pole position to have a crack at one of the first slots to open to women.
Moron!
This is case scenario of course, but we're talking a dream job, right? Catapulting off the flight deck and into the wild blue yonder and all that. Who wouldn't?

I always had a thing for astronomy...but I wanted to be on the ground working at the command center...none of that catapulting for me thanks...

I don't think it sounds far-fetched at all.  I wanted to be an astronaut as a little girl too - and I have since met other women who did as well, one even joined the air force  hoping to be the first American woman astronaut, but Sally Ride beat her to it.  I was good at math and science (all the way through college) and probably would have had a decent chance...but alas, I proved deathly afraid of heights and couldn't be taught to swim.  Two things astronauts need to be able to do.  :P
