Title: Favorite Childhood Television Shows!
Post by: David In Indy on July 10, 2006, 09:31:51 pm
I was wondering what shows everyone enjoyed to watch when they were children.

To all the Bettermost Members from other countries, please tell us what shows you grew up watching. Tell us about some of the great television shows and sitcoms unique to your country!

I know I left out many great television shows. I am sorry about that. I suddenly realized I already had 23 choices and figured I better stop! :D

I loved Leave It To Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show, Dennis The Menace, I Love Lucy and The Addam's Family!  :)

We used to have a show here in Austrlia, called "Skippy, the bush Kangaroo"....

similar lines to flipper and lassie, but it was with a kangaroo, he always saved the day, caught the baddies, and gave us a moral lesson in what was right and wrong....

He could make his kangaroo sound, and his owner could have a complete conversation with him, and find out from Skippy where the baddies were, and lead someone to them....

It was set in a National Park ranger station in Sydney, which was a real place, and open for tourists, who would be able to see Skippy in real life.

It was one of the few Australian shows that was in production here in the late 50's and early 60's.....we grew up on American shows, thinking that all american families were like the Cleaver family, every aussie childs dream, I think then, was to go to America, and see everything that we were seeing on TV.

I loved Superman too, George Reeves....used to hold my breath, thinking that he would be found out to be Clarke Kent....I could see it, couldnt work out why Lois and Jimmy couldnt....

Oh for the simple, innocent days of our youth, and thinking of those early TV shows, has brought back many memories..

Katie -

Skippy sounds absolutely charming. I'm sure I would have loved that show!

I wonder if it was Skippy who triggered your (and your son's) intense love for kangaroos?  :)

Thanks for telling us about "Skippy". I wish they would have put it on tv when I was young. I think I would have loved it!

"The Addams Family" I knew from Prime Time.

"I Love Lucy" I knew only from reruns.

The others?

All-time favorite: "Daniel Boone," with Fess Parker, after he did Davy Crockett (and that "Daniel Boone" isn't available on DVD is a goddamn bitch of an unsatisfactory situation!  ;D ) (The pilot episode was released on video. Do I own it? You bet!)

Also: "Petticoat Junction" turned me into a train lover.

"Bewitched." I still want a house just like Darren and Samantha's!  ::)

I watched most of those shows at some point in my youth.  But the biggies when I was a little girl were The Andy Griffith Show, Leave it to Beaver, Superman, Batman, The Monkee's, I love Lucy, My Three Sons, Family Affair and Dark Shadows(my Mom and I never missed a single hokey episode) :D Bewitched, Petticoat Junction, The Beverly Hillbillies, THe Red Skelton Show, Ed Sullivan, The Carol Burnett Show, and Jackie Gleason.  And of course the original Star Trek and Lost in Space.

I know. I left Bewitched out. :(
I loved that one too.

Another one I loved was "I Dream of Jeanie". Another one I left out!
I always did love that bottle Jeannie lived in. It would have made a really cool house!  8)

The only ones on the list I watched are I Love Lucy and Dick Van Dyke. I'm young (19) so I only watched them as reruns. I loved the older shows on Nick At Nite. Let's see, there was Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Taxi....dang, I can't think of others right now. I also loved Nickelodeon in the 90s, with The Secret World of Alex Mack, Doug, Clarissa Explains It All, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Pete and Pete....ok I'll stop. I guess it depends on the cutoff for being a kid.

You did just fine! Thanks for your comments.  :)

I am not familiar with many of the newer (90's) shows you mentioned. I think I have heard of Clarissa Explains It All, but that is about it.

I THINK I have heard of that show. But it does make me think of another classic I left out. "The Wonder Years". This is yet another show that aired long after my childhood was over, but I always did love watching it. Fred Savage was wonderful in it.  :)

Edit: Chris, it is so cute how you are listing all those movies you haven't seen. Be sure to let me/us know how you liked "As Good As It Gets"  ;)

I just thought of another one I loved as a child! The Brady Bunch!

Not only did I have a huge crush on Tony Dow (who played Wally in Leave It To Beaver), I also had a big crush on Greg (Barry Williams) and Peter (Christopher Knight) when I was growing up. :D

Haha - I STILL love that show ... ABC Family runs reruns of it all the time : )

I feel young.  My other favorites growing up were "The Wonder Year's", "Punky Brewster", "Silver Spoons" and most definitely "Growing Pains"

From the polling list I picked:  "Little House on the Prarie (STILL love that - FOX plays it every day), "Flipper" (saw reruns only) and "Lassie" (also reruns).

The "shows" I listed weren't TV shows at all. They were 1) books 2) movies 3) radio shows. I listed some of my favorites till i was 15..which, folks, bring us to 1950. I saw no TV till I was 31--loved "Dark Shadows," and "The edge orf Night," the spooky soaps...

I DID love "All In the Family," but i had children of my own by then, so I didn't think it should count. MASH , too-but that's not even a children's show. Don't watch too much TV, unless HBO makes something of its own. (now.)

I don't know. But nearly every gay man I have ever met loved  the Golden Girls.

I guess I love the interaction between Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose. A perfect friendship. I love the way they sit in the kitchen until all hours of the night talking and laughing. This is something I love to do. I love the funny but innocent and gentle situations they get themselves in. Perhaps gay people love it because we are afraid that we will be single and alone when we get old. And it would be so nice to have a circle of friends like them to grow old with. It makes old age seem more bearable... almost enjoyable.  :)

I know this is off subject regarding the poll, but I just wanted to reply to what you just said.....and while thinking of what to write, I realized something that I have always thought, and once again you have confirmed it......

Doesnt matter whether we are gay or straight, we all have those insecurities about old age, and even though the chances are that if we are straight, we will have children to be with us, it is still so very important to keep hold of our dear dear friends, who have been with us in all our years....these friends probably know more about us than our kids do anyway......

Just had a wonderful thought.....imagine, some of us from here, in twenty years time, sitting around that kitchen table, our hair greyer, our skin wrinklier, our step a little unsteady...remembering a movie from long ago, that made us cry with sadness, think of the unfairness, and love with a feeling of never wanting to let go.....like it is now, it will still be, in our hearts and souls, no matter what age we are....

The Golden Brokie Girls.... lol

Anything is possible! And even if we are all still living in different countries all around the world, maybe they will have flying cars that can travel from Indiana to Australia in an hour or two. Or maybe they will have technology that will allow us to fax ourselves to other places instantly... kind of like that thing they used in Star Trek.

Beam me to Australia Scotty! lol

Anything is possible!   :)

De Zevensprong is a Dutch TV show for children (and adults) from 1982 in which a school teacher and his class help a boy who lives in a castle to look for a treasure in that castle. It's exciting, mysterious, scary and the soundtrack is awesome! I still have very fond memories of that show!

Ome Willem did a show on television for children with sketches!

I suspect a lot of the appeal of The Golden Girls to a lot of gay men may be a lot more superficial than that--and not that I think this superficiality is a good thing, just that I think it's there.

I'm afraid a lot of the appeal is that you could practically replace each of the characters with a stereotypical gay male.  :(

Dorothy is the butch one. Then there's Blanche, constantly in pursuit of men. Rose could be replaced with a stereotypical air-headed twink, and Sophia could be "the old queen" who says what s/he thinks about anything.

And there are the snappy one-liners. The show was very well-written, at least you can say that.

Ah yes I knew I had to post somewhere. Good day my fellow children's TV enthusiasts(sp? I can't spend all my time watching children's TV and then spell correctly. who do you think I am, Big Bird: ah Big Bird my first love)

Well anyway as I mentioned before I have a album on my homepage type thing all about my favourite kids TV shows. And me and my friends are always coming out with "Do you remember this show...". And seeing as you asked I thought I would show you my album. Also cause I am from a different country and I am younger than most of you I though it would be good to share what I used to watch when I was younger.

This Link SHOULD work:
http://www.bebo.com/PhotoAlbum.jsp?PhotoNbr=1&PhotoAlbumId=2781003 (http://www.bebo.com/PhotoAlbum.jsp?PhotoNbr=1&PhotoAlbumId=2781003)
Also while you are on my photo's page feel free to check out any other of my albums. I have many on there including: My Wales trip, Good films and TV programmes and a Jake album.

Also I find this site good for British Cult tv:
http://www.jedisparadise.co.uk/index.htm?childrenstv/Captain%20Zed/Captain%20Zed.htm&1 (http://www.jedisparadise.co.uk/index.htm?childrenstv/Captain%20Zed/Captain%20Zed.htm&1)

If you have any questions about what these programmes were: google them there will be quite a lot of information on there. Or just ask me.
Enjoy!

Ps. You should be privilaged, I just posted my 800th post on here!

2) The Dick Van Dyke Show (Remember the walnut ep?)
3) My Favorite Martian (and of course I also loved Bill Bixby in The Courtship of Eddie's Father)
4) The Addams Family
5) Batman (*BIFF*!)

Hey, Larz,

2) The Dick Van Dyke Show (Remember the walnut ep?)

That episode scared the daylights out of me!  ;D

3) My Favorite Martian (and of course I also loved Bill Bixby in The Courtship of Eddie's Father)

The Courtship of Eddie's Father. ... Jeez. ... To this day, the first thing I think of when I think of Jodie Foster is the little girl who beat up Eddie! Remember that episode?

Heya Jeff!  YES!  I loved the DVD Twilo episode.  Seeing Laura lift her hair so she could see with the eyes in the back of her head still gives me a chill.  And I loved it when she came gliding out of the closet on the wave of walnuts.

Of course that makes me think of the Mary Tyler Moore show too.  *A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants*  I cried like a baby during the last episode.

LOL-I'd forgotten about Jodie Foster beating Eddie up!  Poor lil Eddie, and his father was such a good dad.  Thanks for reminding me!

My alltime favourite: Die Sendung mit der Maus (The Show with the Mouse)!

It's a classic that has been on German television since 1971. I watched it as a kid, and now my kid watches it every Sunday. It's very cute and informative! In fact, many adults love it for the scientific topics. They, for example, explain things like "how do the stripes get into the toothpaste" or "how do they make peanut curls?" Is that the right expression? Lol. Just gotta love the Maus!

The Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy, My Three Sons, Family Affair, Bewitched, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Carol Burnett Show, Mary Tyler Moore, Wild, Wild West (which usually scared me).

I guess if I had to be on a desert island today, at 47, with all the episodes of just one of those shows, I'd pick Mary Tyler Moore, but only because I just got tired of Ricky's yelling on I Love Lucy.

That little mouse sounds so cute. I wish they would broadcast that show here in the U.S. I would definately watch it!  :)

Melissa - "De Zevensprong" from Holland sounds like a very cute show too!

I can't figure out any of these children's shows our kids are watching today. They don't make any sense at all.

What happened to all the innocence?   ???

YES!!!! Apollo, and Sheba, big crushes on them I had. Remember the one where there was a transmission from somewhere that no one was there to receive? Oh, the drama! I still swoon over the music and luckily I have a copy of it on a CD--call me goofy!

this is such a fun thread. Why can't you go back and add in all the shows we're all suggesting David? I guess there's things about poll making I have yet to learn...

Here are some that I loved and was addicted to growing up:

Star Trek
Laverne and Shirley (loved all those eps where the characters from Happy Days would interact with them)
Taxi
Cheers
The Cosby Show
St. Elsewhere (all these last few from the teen years)
Superfriends
Wonder Woman (such awesome theme music)
Soap
WKRP in Cinncinati
Partridge Family (they'll make you happy!)
The Brady Bunch (somehow these two always went together in my mind, shows about big families)
M*A*S*H (though I'm totally not interested in reruns)
Captain Marvel and O Mighty Isis (anyone, anyone?)
THE LOVE BOAT!!! (how has it failed to show up before now?)
The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman, classic classic classic 70's -- the ones with Sasquatch, OMG!

I ought to follow up here and report that I've been a very happy camper since I found out early last week that the first two seasons of my favorite childhood TV show, Daniel Boone, will be released on DVD on Sept. 26. I've been waiting for that day since they invented home video! Yeehaw!  ;D

Well dang me.....Daniel Boone, one of my favourites too.....i remember when i was a kid, my father shot a fox, and i got the tail and used to attach it to the back of my head, just like Daniels and Davey Crockett......trouble is, the maggotts and fly got into it, and it was one smelly little girl walking around with a tail hangin out of her head, till my mum got it and buried it........

Havent thought of that for ages, happy childhood memories..........

I remember Daniel Boone too.

I also remember Gunsmoke and Bonanza. I never really cared for those shows but my Dad watched them faithfully every week.

I also remember a big debate back in the 1960's.. at least at my school. "Are you a "Munsters" person or are you an "Addams Family" person"? Does anyone else remember this?

BTW, I was an "Addams Family" person!   :)

Absolutely! Let's face it--the smart people (like us) were the Addams Family people . . . :)

It reminds me of another personality categorization theory: all people are either horses, birds, or muffins, or combinations thereof. Try it with a friend; assign a category to a mutual friend. . . you'll be amazed how you agree . . . it's pretty funny  . . .

I was just crossing into the teenage years when my parents got a TV, so most of these shows I never watched until they came out in sindication.  But LUCY is by far the greatest of them all, IMO.  Some that were not on the list, and I still watch today, are Bugs Bunny, Tweety & Sylvester.  Then there are the more sophisticated ones:  Twilight Zone, One Step Beyond, anything having to do with supernatural events.  I remember on Sat afternoons watching these two, and several others whose names sliped passed me, one after the other, for about 5 hours.  No wonder I'm such a mess today...Doug

Yeah. Almanzo was hot.

I always thought Adam (Mary's husband) was very cute too. And of course I had a huge crush on Michael Landon.

I think my favorite though was Leave It To Beaver. I had the biggest crush on Wally when I was growing up.  I thought he was cute even before I knew I was gay ! :)

Crikey, David, this is almost verbatim exactly what I was going to write. I had a massive crush on Wally when I was probably only about the age of the Beaver. It was before I hit puberty. I don't remember lusting after him as such. I think I just had a kid's platonic crush on him. I had a similar crush on a female school teacher at the time, because she smelt nice!!!

I also used to like Welcome Back Kotter, Taxi, The Monkeys, The Wild Wild West, Davey Crockett, Sugar Foot, Cheyenne, Bronco, Jet Jackson, The Rifleman, The Outer Limits, The Red Skelton Show, et al.

I especially loved The Littlest Hobo, about a beautiful German Shepherd dog in the title role. We had a German Shepherd at the time and we'd never miss an episode.

David...you should have divided it by decade of your youth.  I would fit into the 1950s-1960s, so my choice would be very different from someone of the 1970s or 1980s, etc.  I have seem most of these shows, either as first run TV or reruns and syndication.  I have seen every episode of Lucy, Beaver, Hillbillies, Bewitched (many, many times) and some I can't think of at the moment, but I still love to watch those old shows.  The newer shows just don't have that special something that made the oldies great in their time.  Today, I'm hooked on the CSI series (George Eads, Erik Z., Gary Sinese) and Cold Case (Danny Pino is just too georgous for words), and all of the Animal Planet, Planet Earth, Ancient Discoveries, Nature, Nova, Digging for the Truth, and on and on and on. When I was working many of my co-workers were tell me how amazed they were of all the trivial info I had stored in my brain, and I would have to tell the truth....most of it comes from watching TV.  No matter which shows you gravitate towards, there will always be something of educational or trival benefit, i.e., I've learned more about WWII from TV than I learned in 16 years of formal education.

But back to the subject of favorites....my absolute favorite show, cartoon character he may be, is the irrassable Daffy Duck (Bugs, Porky and Tweety are in the running, but the duck has it hands down!).  And I think that my desire to be an artist was rooted in the cartoons I watch...I did not become a cartoonist, nor a commercial artist (which I studied for), but a landscape artist, which lead me into nature/landscape photography.  Oh, I could go on and on, but enough is enough (that wasn't planned..just came out)...Doug

I didn't know you were an artist Doug! That's wonderful! Several members here are artists too! I'm not sure if they paint/draw on a professional leve (make a living from their artwork) but they are quite good. Kerry is a very talented artist. He posted a photo of one of his paintings once. I was always true to Hutch.  Even a few years ago when I watched them again on rerun.  I wonder if there is a correlation between Starsky/Hutch preference and Jack/Ennis preference?

Yeah I loved LHOTP and the Waltons, actually I think I always liked the Waltons better, and I still can watch that too.

Hey Cameron and Susiebell!

Cameron--I really thought that Little Joe was so cute, but I tried to divide my attentions--especially for Hoss because not too many girls liked him "that way". I was for the underdog, I guess. LOL And not too long ago there was a Shirley Temple marathon on TV. I loved watching! Most of hers were tearjerkers, huh?

SusieBell---We are about a decade apart so---different cowboys. LOL. I do remember that show--at least the name. Who else was on it?
Title: Re: Favorite Childhood Television Shows!
Post by: Cameron on June 06, 2007, 10:42:51 pm
Hi Shasta,

Yeah, I can understand liking Hoss, we did like him a lot, but I was too young to think of him that way, but I can see that. :) But we just loved little Joe.  It's on here on a local station, now I have to watch and see how much I remember.

Yes, those Shirley Temple movies sure were tearjerkers, probably all of them.  My favorite of those has to be 'the Little Princess'.  I must have seen it about fifty times when I was a kid, and it always made me cry.

My all time favorite Shirley Temple movie was when she was a teenager, it was called "Since You've Been Gone" and it was about her, her mother and her sister trying to deal while life when her father was off fighting in WWII.  Did you or anyone else see it see it?  Her sister was played by Jennifer Jones, she was amazingly beautiful.  It really is a wonderful movie, really sweet and lovely but very, very sad too.

Gosh, now I have to start watching Bonanza and Shirley Temple movies again. ::)

I have never seen a teen-aged Shirley movie. Now that makes me want to see it---it sounds good.

Is "The Little Princess" the one  -- her dad leaves her at a boarding school and goes to war and then he's assumed dead, so she has to be a maid? I loved the ending. But yeah, that one---omg---I always cry. It was on the marathon.

I like the one that has her grandfather who has disowned the mom for marrying a Yankee! Bill Robinson is in that one too. He's great.
Title: Re: Favorite Childhood Television Shows!
Post by: Cameron on June 07, 2007, 12:22:50 am
Yep, that's the one, when she become a maid in the boarding school and then she goes around to all the hospitals to look for her father.  It's based on the book only they changed the real ending to make it more sentimental for Shirley Temple.  But it does make me cry.  There have been a couple of more recent ones too.

I think I know which one your talking about, but I think there are a few in which she ends up dancing with Bill Robinson.  But I think in all of the early ones she is an orphan, or becomes one, and she always ends up with a wonderful new family.

I don't think she was in too many movies once she became a teen ager.  There is one comedy with I believe Myrna Loy and Cary Grant, that I know of, called The Bobby Soxer.  Its a very weird movie by today's standards.  The one I am talking about, the title is actually 'Since You Went Away', is really a wonderful movie.  She is not even the real star of it. Actually Claudette Colbert, who plays her mother is.  I really do recommend it a lot.  There are actually a lot of real interesting things in it for a forties movie.

I love old movies, and this one is definitely on of my favorites.

Hi Cameron!

I think the one I like is called "The Little Colonel". She has both her parents in this one and Lionel Barrymore is her Southern grandfather. It's really good.

Anyway!! Today I went to my favorite store--Barnes and  Noble--which had a special on DVD's--buy 2 get 1 free. So, because of your recommendation, I asked the guy if he could look up a movie that started with the word "since". I couldn't remember the rest of the title. LOL

He was laughing---kinda like, uh--no. But he asked who was in it and when he looked them up, he found "Since You Went Away". And they had it, so I got it. It really has wonderful reviews. Thank you so much for telling me about it.

I haven't watched it yet, but I am excited to get to see it. I will let ya know.

Enjoy the movie!!,

Toycoon!  How ya doin'?

I loved "Gilligan's Island."  It is very important to me.  Because if it, I knew I was gay.

You see, I was watching an episode where Ginger grabbed Professor, threw him on a table, and kissed him long and hard.  I was about 5 years old when I saw that, and I knew then and there that I wanted to do what Ginger was doing.

I'll still do Russell Johnson for old-times' sake.  He was such a good-lookin' man.

I guess that makes one of us.  Wouldn't the guy take the form of some animal and the girl some form of water?

"Shape of. . . a crap-throwing monkey!"  "Shape of. . . a drink at the gay bar down the street!"

I'm a Wendy and Marvin man myself.

Oh geez.  I remember Wendy & Marvin.

You got the twins reversed.  Jayna would turn into animals, and Zan into some form or water.  Actually, DC Comics ran a series based on the show, and they handled the Wonder Twins much better.  Put them in high school, they had to learn English (they were aliens, after all) and even gave them secret identities.

A friend reminded me of one last night that I had totally forgotten. . . ZOOM!  I feel like Celine Dion because it's all coming back to me now.  I used to love that show.  I even had a few ZOOM! cards I had received in the SASE I sent to their address.  Y'all know the one. . .

Box 350, Boston, Mass, 0-2-1-3-4!

My absolute favorite was the fourth season with Andrae, Carmen, Cate, David, Harvey, Norman, Red, Tishy, Tommy, and Tracey.  I always thought David and Tracey were cute and would make a nice couple.  I had a little crush on Red, one of the first of many of my crushes on goofy red-headed boys.  I read that he and Tishy were related.  I never like that one.  She reminded me of snooty Tatum O'Neal in "Little Darlings" or something.

And remember Bernadette with her funky arm moves?  Go, girl!

http://pbskids.org/zoom/grownups/nostalgia/arm_thing.html

And that silly ubbey dubbey language?  Good heavens!

SKJ,

I went to school with Red!!  His real name was David, but there was already a David, so they named him Red.

I can still do the Bernadette arm thingie.  My ubbey dubbey is a bit rusty, though.

Spin-Off Poll...appropriate for this thread don't you think...Which one was the best Catwoman (only the series Catwomen, and you can include the TV movie one)

Ha! Ha! loneleeb, I had a crush on "Buddy", too. She even had a boy's name. Good grief! What was I thinking?

I try to only allow my daughter to watch age appropriate cartoons (Little Bear, Max & Ruby) aimed at preschoolers.  But then I turn around and she is playing Lara Croft, Tomb Raider on the X-Box with my husband - LOL.

yeah, little bear and max/ruby are fav's around here too, but i sure miss the 'old school' cartoons.

Make sure you look for this DVD, with this cover.  Some of the other seasons were released already, and a few of the DVDs have no WonderTwins on them.  This one does.

I voted one other show also. Different western, first and most important Bonanza but also Rawhide. My dad loved westerns and dreamt about going to America to see "the real stuff". For men in his generations the US often was the great dream. My dad was born in 1919 and he spent most of his young adulthood as a soldier guarding the frontier to Norway....and the Nazis. US was the land of free. Sadly he never got to go.

He really loved his western and since we just had one channel we saw the western also, mom and me. When the phone rang we lied and said that he was unable to answer.... ::)....

My big favourite was My favourite Martian. I have it on DVD, feel like a child again!!

My favorite show as a child was Rocket J. Squirrel, and Bullwinkle the Moose

I loved all the different characters as well.
        The opening.

       Fractured Fairy tales

&feature=related
       Boris and Natasha

&feature=related
       Dudley Do Right

&feature=related
The history of Iraq and Iran, as per Mr Peabody and Sherman
    [ Invalid YouTube link ]

Their whole list of not ready for prime time players.  That was a wonderful show for kids.
Unlike most of the cartoon shows now.  It was entertaining for adults to watch too.

Quite political from time to time too, if I remember correctly!

Yeah, I remember Rocky and Bullwinkle as a child too! I really couldn't make heads or tails out of it (too young) but I sure do remember seeing it on tv!

Every time I hear Michelle Bachmann speak, I think Rocky is still alive.  ;D
