Title: Tell ya what...we're doing a Brokie Brunch in NYC
Post by: Meryl on April 01, 2006, 03:13:03 pm
Save the date:  Saturday, April 29.

Don't know where, don't know when, but if the Army don't get us, we're gonna chow down on some biscuits & beans in NYC and talk Brokeback.  Fish should be jumpin'.

Are you with us?

I'll check flights.

Just so I don't sound too nuts, or too much like a jetsetter, I was born in New York and grew up there, and have family who've been itching to see us again.  It could be a good time for me to come.  How firm is this date?

I live in NYC and would love to hear more about it.  Is Chez Tremplay a separate or closed group?  I wasn't aware of it before and now it's got a whole section.  Hope to hear more about it.

Oh, gosh! Keep us posted, Meryl? You guys aren't that far away. I haven't been to New York in years, but I'd love to hop a train from Philly and come meet you folks in person. It's kinda lonely bein' a Brokie in the City of Brotherly Love.

Jeff,

I'm repeating myself, but it probably bears repeating: as one of my aunts would have said, witheringly (and, boy, were ALL my aunts good at saying things witheringly):

"Mutton dressed as lamb."

Baa!

But thanks for the kind thought--the desperate will clutch at straws--

:D

Thanks, Courtney!

So, Jack f *ckin' Twist thinks he has it all figured out--

(No, honestly just thought I'd start this roundup with a couple of suggestions. If you think this is waaaay too kitschy, PLEASE just lasso and hogtie me!)

Click for listing/review by New York Magazine (have only been to Mesa Grill, myself, but Cowgirl sure looks cute!

Cowgirl
519 Hudson St.
"Saddle up for country kitsch and chuck wagon cuisine served in Texas-sized portions, partner!" http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/cowgirl/index.html (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/cowgirl/index.html)

Mesa Grill

"Bobby Flay's mastery of the spicier things in life keeps getting more polished and exciting." http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/mesa-grill/index.html (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/mesa-grill/index.html)

Agave
140 Seventh Ave. South
http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/agave/index.html (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/agave/index.html)

Or would everybody prefer to go to that place in Dubois?

 ;D

later edit: had to delete Bar-K as they don't do Brunch, so:

Blue Smoke
116 E. 27th St.
"Forget what the 'cue quibblers say. Blue Smoke is an ingenious Manhattan barbecue joint." http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/blue-smoke/index.html (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/blue-smoke/index.html)

I'm includin' this one just cause of the name (it doesn't sound highly recommended!):

560 Third Ave.
"If you like Dukes, you'll like Earls."
http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/earls/index.html (http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/earls/index.html)

And this one looks waay too small, and it's in Brooklyn (not that there's anything wrong with that) but look at the name, and DO click through and look at the sign--real cute!

Jake's Bar-B-Que Restaurant

Yeehaw, I finally got back to check this thread, and the Brokie Brunch (Bronch?) is happenin'!

John, you are the best for looking up all those restaurants.  They all sound great.  I've actually been to the Cowgirl place, and I'd thought that would be a good place to go.  There's even a little shop across the street that specializes in Western gear--cowboy hats, boots, trinkets, even cowboy underwear!  ;D

Another place I've been to with fellow Brokies is the Rodeo Bar & Grill:  www.rodeobar.com/ (http://www.rodeobar.com/).  It was roomy, and they let us sit for hours gabbing.  They even have an appetizer of shrimp/bacon/jalapeno called Cowboy Kisses.  :-*

Yay, Clarissa!  I wasn't surprised to see you signing up--knew you couldn't resist a get-together like this.  That will be so great if you can come!

Juan, we would love to have you along.  Brokies are Brokies, whether of Tremblayan lineage or another.  I will be bringing a Brit Brokie who's vacationing in NY and staying with me that week.  She'll be thrilled to meet everyone.

So far I've got nine:  John (with new haircut and clean shirt), Clarissa, Jenny, Amy, Deedee, Phila. Jeff, Juan, and me and my friend.  I can think of more who are in the area and might travel in:  Surf, Hoboken Jeff, henrypie, Paul and David.  Check in,  you guys!

littleguitar, not to worry, we live here, so when you ride into town, just let us know and we'll meet up.  :)

yay!! our little gathering is taking shape! That cowgirl place sounds perfect, with an after meal stopover at the Western gear store where we'll all pick up our rodeo belt buckles for ceremonial strumming and flicking purposes!

Would LOVE to have you fly out Clarissa! And surely some in the connecticut, jersey, and philly areas can make the drive up? I could offer my air mattress to one person for the night, though I warn you, I live in a studio in brooklyn, so it's not all that spacious! But it's available for the night if anyone needs a place to crash either before or after the gathering.

And don't forget to check out the DVD release party we are trying to plan for Easter weekend in Chicago.

What a sociable bunch we are, huh? No real surprises there I guess!

I wanna come to all of it.  I want to go to the Cowgirl place (Jeez, New York really does have everything.)  I want to sit on Ray's balcony and draw pictures!  I want to do the Hokey Pokey in front of the Pierre Hotel and have a candlelight vigil for Hal the Coyote.  I want to stroll down Paseo de Whatchacallit in Santa Fe (another place I love) with Jimmy looking for live coyotes.  I want to come to Rochester and see the BetterMost World Headquarters!  And I want you all to come here.

And Juan, you may know, we rafted over here en masse as refugees from the IMDb troll wars, and are a tight, loving group, but we're are also open friendly people.  Y'all come on.  Shit, am I really going to New York??

Broncho?

Hey, a serious (for me) note.  If I'm going to get airplane tickets and arrange everything here to actually do this (which includes transcontinental air travel solo with a three year old - which has the potential of making staying on old Sleepy for 8 seconds look tame), I'd be bummed if the date of this Brokie Broncho were to change.  How sure a thing is April 29th?

Well, everyone, Elle has a big question here--if we say April 29, do we mean it or are we gonna come back and say, bud, there's been somthing I been meanin' to tell ya.....and burst her bubble?

I am here. I ain't goin nowwhere. ('cept maybe to Chicago for Easter weekend if that happens...)

Let's get the date firmed up if we can.

This is the only place on the list that I've been to, and it's great!  It's been a while, but I think I even had biscuits and gravy here...not to mention the killer margaritas.  Right in the West Village.  This one gets my vote...if a total newbie's vote counts. ;)

Jenny and Clarissa:

Tell you what, I will be in New York on the 29th, so I will be at the Broncho one way or t'other; if I have to, I'll leave instructions to have my ashes sent over: you can pour out a little Old Rose in front of my Tin Can. (Leave at curbside afterwards.)

Juan: I could be wrong, but it looks like it's shapin' up to be 'Cowgirl' (and how perfect a name is that?) not only as you and Meryl have already been and don't object, but Elle seems to like the idea, and as she is travelling the farthest to come and be sociable, I think that carries much weight--

Others will doubtless have their opinions, though! Wherever we go, I think we'd best give fair warnin' as I think we will be quite a sizeable posse.

I can't believe no one suggested going to Jackson Hole (and what state is Jackson Hole in I ask?).  Citysearch New York readers give every location in Manhattan a higher rating than Cowgirl and it's one less dollar sign too.  Jackson Hole doesn't do small.  Burgers, sandwiches, and even a South of the Border menu too.   You know what this restaurants logo is?  The Wyoming rodeo cowboy on a bucking bronco.  Citysearch editorial rating for Cowgirl = "Average".  Citysearch editorial rating for Jackson Hole = "Recommended".

These threads have a way of getting long.

When we get closer to the event, will one of the organizers be so kind as to summarize where and what time? I'll have to check train schedules.

Thanks very much!

(I can't believe I'm actually getting serious about this. New York-phobic me. I'm the out-of-towner who always gets the cab driver who is just off the boat from New-Yorkistan and asks me for directions to where I want to go. But I used to have friends in the West Village--they lived right at the intersection of Greenwich and Christopher. I want to get one of those real big western belt buckles. ...)

Now what about watching the DVD together too?

I'll tell you this about restaurants with big groups - more than 10 people, or really even less, especially if the place is loud, and not everybody can talk to everybody.  And I hate that!  I just went out for my quarterly adoptive moms night out and there 16 of us at one big, long table, and I wanted to be in all the conversations, but couldn't.  If I come all that way, I want to spend time in real conversation with each of you, not just the two people seated next to me or whatever.

How can we do it so that we can actually mingle?  Somehow commandeer a private room at a restaurant with small tables and keep table switchin.  Or  oooooooooooooo get a hotel suite with some honkin TV and watch the DVD and have room service!  Oh that!!  Somehow have a little home for a few hours!!!!!  That! That! That!  Too much?

fyi on Cowgirl --- Actually you can get the back room at Cowgirl for private use (unless the name recently changed the full name is Cowgirl Hall of Fame).  Even though it is a "back room" it has windows and light and door to the street.  My friend had her daughter's birthday party in there.   No idea of the cost, but I can find out.  Cowgirl Hall of Fame also has big tables throughout the restaurant for large groups.

Amy,

Great minds. I called and found out that: the adjacent same-owner restaurant, 'BAR-K,' a nominal 40-person space, is available for private parties during the day (we would have to be out by 4pm as they start servin' dinner at 5pm;

The Party Person at Cowgirl/Bar-K is Devra deDeaux, she will next be in on Tuesday at 11am (she is there til 7pm), phone 212-633-1133;

They still have April 29 open.

One can also reserve a lounge, a back room and a bar; take a look, here's the website party page: http://cowgirlnyc.com/parties.html (http://cowgirlnyc.com/parties.html)

Time: 16 and 9!

 ;D

later edit:

Here's the Brunch Page: http://cowgirlnyc.com/parties_brunch.html (http://cowgirlnyc.com/parties_brunch.html)

(Sorry Elle--the only TV's at the Bar--although a couple scenes would take on added meaning and poignance when seen in a bar, no?)

Time: 17 and 2!

John, I want to marry your sense of humor  ;D

The date is firm!  If the Army gets one of us, there's still a handful left to carry on.  Go for it, Elle.  :-*

I agree that Cowgirl Hall of Fame seems the best choice.  Surf, what I like about it is that it's one of a kind rather than a chain, and my Time Out New York restaurant guide gives it a red star, which means they think it's ver' good.  I checked out their lounge when I was there, and though it's small, it would be a great place to have drinks.  Couches line the walls, and it has a homey feel.

John or Amy, would you be up for calling them on Tuesday?  It looks like we've got nine for sure, so maybe go for a dozen or so people?  Darn it, hpie and Courtney, I wish you could come!  :(

As for watching the DVD somewhere, I have faith that we'll work it out.  I have too much going on that week to feel confident offering my place as an option.  But this is New York, after all, and maybe we could even rent a private screening room somewhere.   8)

UPDATE ON COWGIRL:

Bar-K (the back mini-restaurant) is booked for both April 29th and April 30th. >:(
It is also booked up for the following weekend - both days.  If you guys would want to book the back mini-restaurant for a later date, here is the cost involved for a brunch.  It would be a payment of $25 person for the food and one free mimosa, plus a variable fee (depending on the number of people) for labor and gratuity - the party planner said that for 15 people or so, that fee  would be somewhere in the $200 vicinity.  SO, if 15 people attended, it would cost each person $25 plus approximately $40 more dollars = total per person would be hover around $65, PLUS you pay for your own additional drinks over the one free mimosa.

HOWEVER, Cowgirl ALSO takes reservations in the MAIN DINING ROOM for up to 15 people, and then all you have to pay for is cost of your own food and your own drinks.

Post by: JCinNYC2006 on April 04, 2006, 12:42:41 pm
Wow, that doesn't sound right.  $40 on top of the cost of food?  If that's the case it's probably too much for me.  Is there a plan b?
Title: Re: Tell ya what...we're doing a Brokie Brunch in NYC
Post by: wtbgirl on April 04, 2006, 12:52:51 pm
In terms of NYC prices for reserving a private space, it's a really good price.  The pros are that the space itself (I have been there for a party) is great and condusive to a group of 12-15 people (the website says up to 40, but believe me, it is a mini-restaurant, and I would not put 40 people in there unless the majority of them were toddlers!)   It is really a side one room mini-restaurant with a side entrance and large windows (and a second entrance to the main restaurant).   The staff sets up a buffet style brunch and there is a bar located in the mini-space.  There are a bunch of tables and booths around the perimeter for people to sit and eat.

The cons are the cost of a private space - I wanted to alert everyone to cost.  Like I said, expect to spend around $65, and more if you want more than one drink.

If we want to go to Cowgirl, Plan B would probably be just to reserve a table in the main room.  Then it's just like any restaurant - you pay for your food, your drinks and your portion of the tip.  The restaurant itself is not expensive, so you can easily eat and drink there for well under $65 a pop.

I get it, I overlooked the part about the private space.  Although if the fee was $200 and there were 15 people, wouldn't it be more like $13.50?  Not trying to be a nuisance, just that 40 for a space fee is a bit more than I expected to pay.

Juan

Post by: wtbgirl on April 04, 2006, 03:18:02 pm
Oops sorry about that - actually yes, I misread my calculator earlier (pre coffee - I couldn't see straight  ;D) and overstated the price by a bit.

AT COWGIRL:   The minimum labor and gratuity fee, according to the planner, is $175, regardless of the actual body count.   So, for example, if we had 10 people confirmed that were coming to the braunch, that would be an extra $17.50 (175/10) over the $25 pre-fixe food bill, for a total of $42.50.   Whatever the exact end price, which depends on the number of people coming, the concept is that -

at Cowgirl, for the private space at Bar K, we have to each pay a pro-rated labor/tip fee, pay the $25 food/one drink price, and pay for our own drinks after the first free mimosa.

So, all the folks that were interested in doing need to decide what everyone wants to do.  We can (1) reserve this space - but if so, we have to pick a new date, (2) we can reserve a table in the main room for 4/29, or (3) pick another restaurant for 4/29.

Amy, thanks so much for doing that legwork for us!!  MWAH!  :-*

Right now, we have a count of 11, if Elle comes:   Amy, John, Deedee, Juan, Paul, David, Jeff, Clarissa, Jenny, me and my friend Sarah.  Maybe we can still coax HobokenJeff to come, too.

That is very doable at a large table in the main room, so my vote would be to reserve one there and thus avoid the extra costs.  If it turns out we have significantly more people, then we could explore other options.  I think the Rodeo Bar & Grill, for example,  is large enough to accommodate more people fairly easily.

I really don't want to change the date at this point, for fear of losing attendees.  It's worth it to stay at the Cowgirl, I think, because of the Western shop across the street, and also because it's in Greenwich Village, a very cool neighborhood for exploring afterwards.

What does everyone else think?

I'm in, whatever (cough, hack, stumbles in through the swinging bar doors)-- sawbones says I didn't die after all, guess I have to believe him.

Should we make a rez for an even dozen to allow for late additions?

(You're not gonna believe this, but it just started snowin' here in New York--well, it won't stick an hour--)

(cough, hack)

Thanks for the kind wishes, all!

I am SOOO glad this is still happening! Yes, it is snowing here!!

Well, I see your point Meryl, about keeping the date. I we have more than 12 people, though, how can we get it to be easy enough to mingle? This is a big concern from Clarissa and I agree with her. I want to be able to talk to all of you, not just four or five within easy earshot.

So, I would be up for changing the date and reserving a room at Cowgirl. But I would do what the majority wants. I really want to know what Elle thinks of this....are you out there E?

PS hooray for the Connecticutian Brokies joining in the fray!

We've had it all in Philadelphia this morning: sunshine, rain, and snow showers.

John, "I'm so glad you're not dead!" (What movie is that line from?)

(Starts sweating a bit) I'd be in favor of a reservation at the Cowgirl. If it's in the West Village, I'd feel a bit more comfortable than having to find my way around an unfamiliar New York neighborhood since I used to know the West Village, even if that was more than ten years ago.

Meryl, I think it would be a good idea to try to encourage Hoboken Jeff to come, if he's free.

Added: If it becomes necessary to change the date, at the present time the only weekend I have booked between Easter and Memorial Day is the weekend of Saturday, May 13, so I can be flexible, if it's necessary.

I can't believe it's freaking snowing.  No wonder I get sick with every change in the weather.  I guess Prince was right, sometimes it snows in April.  Glad you're feeling better though!

Amy, would you go ahead and reserve a table for 12?  How about noon, so Philly Jeff and the Connecticutians won't have to get up before the crack of dawn?  ;)

We can ask them to set us up so that we're all able to talk across at each other.  Or if we have to do two tables, we can plan to do a "movable feast" kind of dealie where we change places mid-meal.  It'll drive the waiters insane, but we'll be extra, extra nice to them.  ;D

I'm ever so glad you're still alive, John.  That snow didn't stick an hour, did it?  But it was purdy.  :)

Thank you, Meryl, that is most kind of you, O Great High Priestess of the Brokeback Cult! That time will give me something to work with to check train schedules. I don't own a car, so I'll be arriving by train.

OMG, looks like I'm really goin' to the Big City!

John, I'm also ever so glad you didn't die. You can't die! I'm looking forward to meeting you!

So Brunch is on? Do we have to do anything other than show up? Amy, have you made a reservation? (I can see how the Cowgirls would be peeved if we made two or three duplicate rezzes for twelve...)

Thanks so much Meryl, for the kind wishes, and also thanks to Jeff (gosh, I get to meet a favorite author!), to my suprise we will be able to chat at brunch without the mediation of Madame Arcati and her ouija board--so looking forward!

Someone do post confirmation that the rez is in hand, if it is--

Can any of you New Yorkers tell me the cross streets for the block of Hudson Street where The Cowgirl is located?

Thanks, "JC"!

OMG, I'm getting excited, too. That is, like, one block north of Christopher Street, if I'm reading my map correctly? I used to know that part of the city in the early 1990s, the last time I was out and about in Manhattan.

I must find out if The Leatherman is still in existence on Christopher Street!

I'm not sure, David. I don't remember a spiral staircase, but it's been probably literally a dozen years or more since I've been in the place. I do remember there was a downstairs. I remember going downstairs for fitting--literally, no joke or euphemism here--when I bought my chaps there in--eeek!--1990.

And I'm so sorry to hear of your job loss! That sucks!

Juan
DeeDee
Jeff
Clarissa??
HobokenJeff?

And yes, the little rotation of the tables is a must! We can't be missing the opportunity to get quality time with each other.

littleguitar, not to worry, we live here, so when you ride into town, just let us know and we'll meet up.  :)

I'll also be in NYC in late May (I'm an ex-New Yawker) - the same time as Mandy (littleguitar) - I arrive May 23 in the evening.

I'm sure that the April brunch will be so successful that y'all want to do another one a month later.  It's never too early to plan!  That will also give others from out of town time to plan their trips.  NY is so beautiful in late May.

So if you're not coming, Ellle, how's about comign to Chicago for another brokiefest I am trying to cook up for sometime in May or June? I'm not posting about it yet, but I am hoping that we could get some people (Nicole, MandyI, David Thomas and of course all the chicagoans) to show up!

I'll be in town from friday (April 28th) till monday which is a holiday in Germany anyway. Somebody please tell me I am crazy. My husband did already. OMG!!!OMG! I am so totally psyched that we have a Tremblayan Brokie from GERMANY coming to our BRONCHO!!! Elle, are you having second thoughts now???

I only have a studio, so I don't really have the space for ya, but let's put our heads together, brokies, and come up with some where nice for our guest to stay!

pipedream, you are crazy, but it's the kinda crazy we can't get enough of around here!

YEEHAAW!!

Hey, I'm thinking we might should make some t-shirts to commemmorate this fine event. We could do this at cost if you don't want to make it part of the donations to Matthew Shepard Foundation, and I could order them for everyone according to size so we just pay one shipping charge and it would be a lot less that way, maybe even free shipping.

Who is interested??? I am thinking we would have it say something like

Chez Tremblay Brokies
First International Broncho
New York, NY
April 29th, 2006
Yeee Haaw!!

Of course that may be too much text but it's just brainstorming at this point. But to design and get it in time I'd want to have it worked out by Friday, so let me know if your innerested!

So happy you are coming Pipedream!!! (what is your real name again??)

Jenny, that t-shirt thing would be great! We really should think of a nice slogan. At the moment, however, only stupid things pop to my mind, like:

It was all about Cowboys.
But it happened at the Cowgirl.

Hey I like your idea Anke! Let's get some more ideas for the t-shirt--or yays and nays for starters.

Becky, you didn't tell us you were coming here in MAY!? That is so f'ing cool! Maybe you are coming around the time that Ellemeno is coming to NY? And Sarah (henrypie) was going to come up here then too. Maybe we should take a trip to Niagra Falls and meet you and Nicole?

But I am starting to worry more about her--where is she? Does anyone have more than her email? I actually have a snail mail address--I'll send her a card.

Well, I'll weigh in on the t-shirt thing, if you want.  I've learned not to buy t-shirts that invite people to ask about my obsession.  I always end up wearing them to do the housecleaning instead.  But don't let that stop you, if a bunch of you want to have some made up.  :)

Strange that you should mention Toronto and Niagara, Becky.  I'll be there April 24-27 with my friend Sarah and some other Lord of the Rings pals to see the musical and take a side trip to the Falls.  Yep, some of us got both the Ringer and Brokie genes handed to us at birth.  ;D

Well I have just been informed by my mum(Seeing as she never really tells me what we are doing on holiday, she just tells me where we are going) that we will fly in to Toronto on the 26th of May, in the afternoon, then the next day we are doing stuff and then we only have the monday of the 28th cause we go to Niagra on the 28th. But we have 3 whole days in Niagra, so I suppose that would be a good idea.
I haven't heard from Nicole, I will PM her now cause I am starting to get worried too, she hasn't been on or contacted anyone in days.

So What do you think about meeting up in Niagra sometime from the 28th to the 1st? :)

Becky you should start a new thread about this! I am up for it if we can get a few more to join in the trip. I have never been to Niagra Falls.

Could you start one for me please, Jenny? My internet time has been cut down to a minimum tonight cause my mum is being a bitch. I am actually supposed to be doing homework right now, but who cares. Wow that would be amazing if we could all meet up in Niagra. If not I guess that it will just be you and me Jenny. Niagra here we come!

Hi guys!
Still sad I can't come; still happy at the thought of future rendezvous; lastly wanted to point out the amusing closeness of "Niagra" to "Viagra."

It's

NIAGARA.

I am off to bed now folks, I have stupid school tomorrow and I just know I will have withdrawal symptoms from staying away from you for so long. I will talk to you guys about the Viagra trip tomorrow. Night, night! :-*

Yes, it will take place!  With close to a dozen of us, no amount of bears, coyotes, Army recruiters or Game & Fish wardens can ambush all of us.  ;D

Oh, that sassy cowgirl!

Sorry, I was confused. I didn't think her hair was glossy black enough to qualify as "raven."

Yeehaw!  Let the First International Broncho festivities begin!  8)

Wilkommen in New York, pipedream!  You will definitely give our Broncho a certain jet-setting glamour.  8)

Here's a website with some hotel info (the Hotel Newton is fairly reasonably priced and is in my neighborhood): http://www.newyorkhotel.com (http://www.newyorkhotel.com).  But you may want to wait til some other Bronchers check this thread just in case they can offer you a spare bed.

Can't wait to say howdy in person!  :D

Meryl, thanks for that link! I just made my reservation at the Hotel Newton for one night (sunday to monday). Jenny will let me stay at her place for the other nights. She rocks (you rock, Jenny!!!).

I am so looking forward to meeting you guys. Got the gummi-bears already. Got a new haircut already ("Boys don't cry"-style...). Getting excited. Sheep be damned.

See ya!

 :) 8) :)

Hey Jeff Wrangler:    Have you checked train schedules yet?      The options for Amtrak are pretty limited via Hartford on a Saturday.     I can catch a train in that arrives at Penn Station at 10:50 AM,  but the departures are 4:30 pm or 8:00pm.

Concerning the T-Shirt thing, what about something like:

International Brokie Brunch
April 29th NYC
Redlined it all the way,
couldn't get there fast enough!

You got a better idea? Hunh??

Thanks for asking, David. Yes, and no. I took a quick look when this brunch was first discussed, and I was going to make a more detailed look at work tomorrow/Friday (the boss is out Friday afternoon. ...  ;) ). Thing is, I'm in Philadelphia here, so every train on the Northeast Corridor running between Washington and Boston goes through here. There is at least one train that will get me into Penn Station about the same time as you, 10:56 a.m.. I have not yet looked into any trains to get back home. That's been concerning me because it's difficult to estimate when one will want to leave, and, as I've been complaining, all the Corridor trains are by reservation these days.

It's even possible for me to make the trip by commuter rail, changing at Trenton, but that takes forever.

For me it's the train or not at all. I live right in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, and it's too expensive to keep a car.

Anke, I'm glad to hear that you're all set for lodgings.  I think your t-shirt text is great, too.  :D

Train people, I would suggest taking the late train home.  That way you're covered if you want to hang out with folks longer.  Hey, it's New York City.  There's always somewhere to go!  8)

Little modification of the T-Shirt text:

Without the "2006" it'd look like an annual thing, woudn't it?

Hi Meryl,

I was thinking that too.   The 4:30 train is too early.     We are meeting at Noon right?    I'd hate to have to eat and run.

Jeff:  Same here.  I could use the MetroNorth commuter train, that has more choices, but it only runs from Grand Central and then back to New Haven.    I'd have to drive to NewHaven and the MetroNorth trains make a bazillion stops.   Amtrak will at least get me closer to home.

Hopefully there will be enough of us there to go sighseeing after the brunch to kill time until the 8:00 pm train.    :)

Anke,

The Empire State Building is within walking distance of the Train station.     It is the Tallest building in the City (again).    It is also within walking distance of Times Square.
Two must-see things in New York City.

Whoowee!!! Some life got into this thread while I was steaming at work today about having to do anything but brokie stuff!

So, I like both T-shirt Ideas. I will post them both tonight if I can on the site, and you guys can tell me what size to order for you (and any modifications to make that you see fit--color wise. I will just let my imagination go wild for this one unless I get more direction from y'all!)

Then, I will take orders via PM (latest order taken this Saturday so that it can go out by Monday and get to me by Friday latest, to deliver to you all here in the city.) This way I am only paying a one time shipping charge and saving each person who orders on the cost of shipping. I hope to get a few orders--if I get more than one, it'll be worth the savings on shipping. I will have to get checks or cash from each person on Saturday though.

And, for this one time thing I won't be making donations to the MSF unless you want to do that, and you can add it in with your payment, which I will donate to them. Otherwise, it'll just be cost. around $14 to $16 I think.

Brokie Brunch T-shirts are in the shop! I made five versions--one version of each quote for the women (that's two total), and two versions of the "we didn't come here to fish" for the men, plus one version for the men of the "redlined" quote (that's three more).

SO if you like them, and want one, and want to save on shipping costs (guessing $3 to $4 per order?) then just PM me with the size and kind you want--be specific! Look at the size chart if you have any doubts--it's in each shirt's square.

I will be able to make one order for all who want them and who want to save shipping costs by doing one bulk order to me here in NYC and then I'll distribute them when we are together! I'll pay for them and you will pay me back when we see each other.

So, go to the link at the bottom of my post if you are interested, the brunch shirts are at the very bottom of the page. Again, these are made for cost only, you can put more on top of that if you want, when you pay me back, and I will donate the extra to the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

P.S. I won't be online again till tomorrow morning for a brief hour or so, then not again till Saturday morning. I'm off to DC for a friend's dance performance! But whoever PMs me here by Saturday around 10 am EDT, I can order you a shirt if you are specific about the one you want and the size you want. (be sure to specify the quote it has on it for easy identification, and the color for the men, since there are multiple options.)

Ciao,

Jenny

Howdy, Bronchers!   :D

I'm just checking in before I leave town for a few days--will be flying early Monday to Toronto and returning late Thursday.

Alas, our beloved John Gallagher has actually been ambushed by the Infernal Revenoo  :'( :'( :'(, so we will have to plan another Broncho for later so we can welcome him back, after he's been bailed out.   John, we'll be thinking of you and sending lots and lots of virtual hugs your way!  :-*  :-*  :-*

At least we have some good news to help cheer us up for missing John.  HobokenJeff is coming!  Thanks to JeffWrangler for sending him the virtual postcard that brought him back to the fold.  ;D

Here is my latest count of attendees:

amy7769
DavidinHartford
DeeDee
HobokenJeff
JCinNYC2006
JeffWrangler
meryl

Newyearsday
Sarah (meryl's friend)

Amy, would you mind calling the Cowgirl this week and re-confirming our reservation?  Let's leave it at 12.  You never know what the gods might provide.... ;)

We have good omens for our Broncho, Friends.  Jake, Heath and Michelle were all sighted on Hudson Street at different times this week, so their auras will be lingering over us.   Yeehaw!  8)

Jeff:   Yes, I'm coming in on Amtrak #195 into Penn Station.

It is just over a mile from the Brunch site I believe.   Penn Station is on 8th Ave which runs south right down to Hudson  street.  About a block from 10th Ave where Cowgirl is I think.    We could walk the mile or so, or take a cab.   I don't like the NY subway system.   I've seen too many bad movies I guess!   LOL.

I know that Anke (Pipedream) wanted to see some of NY too.   After Brunch I was thinking we could head back up towards Penn Station, then go East 3 blocks to the Empire State Building,  Macys,  Times Square is impressive too.

That would also put us near the Train station to catch our respective return trains as well.   Mine leaves at 8:00 pm.

I will reconfirm the reservation this week as requested.

For those arriving from Penn Station, if you don't want to cab it, the subway is incredibly safe - I take it every weekday, heck, Heath takes it to and from Brooklyn all the time.   ;D

Take the A, C, or E lines, located in Penn Station to the West 4th Street Station. Walk on West 4th Street and cross 7th Avenue going WEST to West 10th Street (make sure you ask someone which way is west, the West Village can be a bit confusing if you don't know it). Take West 10th Street to Hudson Street. Cowgirl is on the north-west corner of Hudson Street and West 10th Street (not 10th Avenue).

We can play it by ear, I guess. If the weather is nice, it might be nice to walk it. It's been a dozen years at least, but I bet if I started from the intersection of Greenwich and Christopher I could still find my way around the West Village.

I'm probably going to see if I can get a train around 8 p.m. also. And I have a personal mission to check out the Leatherman, on Christopher Street, while I'm so close. There are ... er ... some things I need. ...  ;)

Arriving Penn Station, train #644, 10:56 a.m.

I decided to return to Philadelphia a little early.

Departing Penn Station, train #135, 6:05 p.m.

At the risk of being indiscreet, I believe Meryl sent him a link to this brunch thread, but I'm not clear on what the "rule," if any, is nowadays for inviting people here to our Bettermost Tremblay spread, so I don't know whether or not he's signed on.

Phillip encourages people to invite other real brokies here.  It's a moderated board, so troll is not really that big of a concern.  Well, when you see him, just let him know that people here do miss his presence.  Based on his last few posts, he may have other reasons not wanting to join, and we all can understand it.  Just thought at least we let him know that we are here :)

Jealous.  Oh so jealous.

Since I'll be working all weekend and couldn't afford to come out there even if I weren't, would it be weird if I maybe, say, got someone's cell number so I could call and say hello Saturday?  Any volunteers please leave a PM.

Kirk

Oh great idea, Kirk!  Me too.  Birng your cell phones!  And think of John - I know you will.

O Brokies dear, be of good cheer,
On Hudson Street we soon shall meet.
From near and far, plane, train and car
Will bring us to our rendezvous.

Bring cameras, phones and pheremones,
And by all means, wear jeans, tote beans;
We'll raise a toast to Friends who post
And wait to hear of our good cheer.

The Mountain lends to all good Friends
A spritely air and aspect fair.
We'll feast with glee and guarantee
Of Ennis and Jack there'll be no lack!

Yeehaw!  ;D

See y'all soon!  :-*

Have fun and don't be too naughty! ;)
Oh I am up for a west coast meeting next year....Lori's do the best food! Plus one of them has a car in the resturant. I have just looked down and realised I am wearing my Lori's tshirt! What a coincidence! ::)

Just in case you need it: address is 519 Hudson at 10th street. The phone number for Cowgirl (it would be so funny if a lot of you called there -- but they'd probably hate it!) is  212-633-1133. in case you get lost. See you soon!

Here's a brief preliminary report of my telephone impressions of the brunch.  At Kirk's great suggestion, we got Jenny's cell phone number and he and I made a one-hour conference call from SF to Jenny's cell phone.  It was passed around the table and we got to chat with everyone (once Jenny told people how to hold it so they could hear us)!  :D

Since no one from the brunch posted yet, they still must be partying!  ;)  There was talk of shoppong at a western wear store across the street, then going to a karaoke place.

Jenny brought and played her harmonica and we got to hear it over the phone.  Several people brought gifts, including little toy sheep and bandanas.  I asked how the beans were, but apparantly they were not on the menu.  :'(

I think there were about 10 people there.  Anke (Pipedream) wins the prize for coming from the furtherst away (Germany), followed by David (Hartford), and Jeff (Wrangler - Philadelphia) - although I'm not sure which is closer to NYC.

I think Jeff (Wrangler - Philadelphia; not to be confused with HobokenJeff, also in attendence) won the prize for the best outfit - I can't wait to see the pictures!  Kirk and I were sort of featured in most of the pictures, as there was usually someone holding Jenny's cell phone that we were on when pictures were taken.
(I don't think they actually gave out prizes - I'm just saying that as a figure of speech.)

It was very exciting to discover people's voices and be part of the excitement even from afar.   ;D

I'm sure I left a lot out and it will be up to the folks that were there to provide more details.  I just wanted to give you all an advanced hint of what the brunch was like - before the in-person attendees got back from their shopping and possibly karaoke.

Pete

Oh wow, looks like I get to post first on the brunch!

It was a real thrill to meet people who I had only previously known through postings.  I got there last because I had taxi drama with several events clogging traffic, so I missed out on the beginning of the brunch.  There were 9 of us, including me, Jeff from Jersey, Jeff from Philly, Anke, Amy, David, Jenny, Meryl and a friend of Meryl's from England (sorry I forgot her name).  As Pete posted, I was greeted with practically a grab bag of little gifts, including gummy candies (from Anke?), bandannas from Meryl, and a little zoo of plastic animals (I got the dog who's laying there with Jack  ;D ).

It was very laid back and fun, different conversations going at different ends of the table.  Meryl's friend is both a Brokie and a Lord of the Rings fan, as is Meryl, and those LotR fanatics are much luckier than Brokies (they have action figures!  We should too dang it).  Jeff from Philly brought an awesome book of photos from the movie and some of his short stories (I think they're in the fan fiction section no?).

It turns out Jenny, Amy, Meryl and myself are all in NYC, so hopefully we can do this again.  The food was really good, very filling, and I got to know about what folks do for a living, talked some about being a social worker.  I didn't get to talk to folks at the other end as much, unfortunately.  Jenny got the call from Pete and Kirk in San Fran, and they were passed around and spoke to everyone.  They were so cool too, I would love to meet up if I can make it to SF this summer.

Anke is doing this great little 'audio project', I'll let her talk more about it since it was her doing.  That and the bunch of pictures taken will give everyone a better sense of the afternoon.  I can be pretty shy the first time I meet people, so my description is not doing justice to how nice it was, and I would love to do it again to get to know folks better.

We did go across the street to a place Meryl knew about, a wicked little shop filled with western clothes like hats, boots, belts and buckles.  It was like a wardrobe shop for the movie, and it was small but man, packed with so much cool stuff.  That was the most fun for me because I got to talk to people I hadn't really spoken to at the table.

Jenny had this amazing booklet and was letting people read it.  It was like a picture book with all these quotes from reviews, people involved in the making of the film and people who had seen it.  (Remember who on the official site, there was a place to "share your story"?  The quotes came from there, and I could only read a few, they were way too sad, but in a moving way).  We got to try on a bunch of wicked cool cowboy hats.  Unfortunately the ones that looked best on me were way to expensive, so I had to settle for a different piece of clothing.  It was a blast trying things on and seeing how everyone looked kind of getting into character.  David and Jenny bought the coolest stuff that I'm aware of, but again I'll let them describe it.

Then I had to split at about 4 to get to volleyball.  I had a great time and I loved meeting everyone.  Others will probably post better descriptions but I hope that gives a sense of what the afternoon was like.

Juan

Edit/addition:  how could I forget this??  Jenny was wearing one of the t-shirts available for sale, a sexy one that reads "There ain't no reins on this one".  So this is my plug to check out here site and get yourself one of these amazing shirts: http://www.spreadshirt.com/shop.php?sid=25107 (http://www.spreadshirt.com/shop.php?sid=25107)

Amtrak Tickets:  $64.00

Black "Jack Twist" cowboy hat: $75.00

Spending the day in NYC with your BetterMost buddies  :  PRICELESS!!

YEE HAA!

Boy am I tired!    LOL.     I just got home from the City.   Lonnnng  train ride again.

I see that Pete and Juan have already started reporting!    :D    To start off,  my train was late getting in.    So I figured I missed Jeff Wrangler at the Train Station.   So I fast walked the 24 blocks to the restaraunt, just to be the first there!    LOL.

Jeff soon arrived as his train was late too.   He won the Best outfit award.   He had on his black cowboy hat and western themed shirt.    Eventually the rest of the gang all trickled in.    Anke arrived with German Gummi-candy for us all.      Meryl and her friend Sarah from England brought us all Bandanas, just in case we fell off our chairs and needed someone to tend our wounds like Jack did after the Bear incident.   LOL

The staff was happy to put on the BBM sound track disc for us.  But we eventually got so loud nobody could hear it!      We ate and talked for 3 hours!     We went across the street to a Western wear store and went crazy.    Jenny bought a belt buckle so she could do her Jack Twist "buckle flick" move like in the movie.    I bought a nice Jack Twist cowboy hat and a bolo tie like Jack wore at the Thanksgiving dinner scene.     Juan bought.......He'll kill me for telling,  but what the hell.   Cowboy underwear!     Despite my pleas, he wouldn't model it for us.    And now I'm sure I wont ever get the opportunity!   Ha ha ha!

I think we bought enough at the store for the woman to close early!   We overwelmed her I think!    From there we ventured over to Christopher Street to visit a store called the "Leather Man".     My goodness!    I think Leslie could get lots of creative ideas for Jack and Ennis at this place!    Lets just say there were things in that place that can make a grown man blush.     ::)

From there Amy led us over to a fun little Pub for a few drinks and lots of laughs.   But alas, I eventually had to walk back up to the train station.   So the last I saw of the girls, they were being over run by a large group from the "Daughters of the Revolution" that were in town.     Trust me, they had sillier hats than we did!    LOL

All in all, a GREAT day!    I wish  all y'all could have been there with us!

David  ;D

Wow, that was a long brunch!  But I expected as much.  ;D

Juan and Pete and David, thanks for the wonderful reports!  8)

Where to start?  Sarah and I got there a little after noon because the subways weren't making local stops below 14th Street and we had to walk a bit further.  But guess who got there the earliest?  The people who live furthest away!  Anke, David and JeffWrangler were already sitting at the bar when we arrived.  It was so great to see them and know that the Broncho was at last a reality!  We finally sat down around 12:30, still missing Juan, who appeared closer to 1:00 thanks to his taxi drama.  We were nine altogether (montferrat and DeeDee didn't appear), but you could say we were 11, since Kirk and Pete called and talked with us for at least an hour.  Amy, HobokenJeff and Jenny rounded out our group.

We sat at two tables pushed together, one round, one square, and a built-in wooden booth curved around two sides.  It was cozy enough to hear most of the conversations with a little effort.  Pictures of cowgirls and rodeo paraphernalia were everywhere.  It was Lureen Land!  We took lots of pictures. Mine aren't digital, so it will take awhile to get them developed and scan them, but Anke's should be viewable as soon as she gets to a computer.  Anke also interviewed each of us (except Amy, who clammed up like Ennis when faced with a microphone  ;D) and will ask Phillip to make the audio available onsite so we can all hear it.  8)

The food was hearty, and everyone chowed down on eggs, grits, biscuits, pancakes, fried chicken and quesadillas, washed down with mimosas.  JeffWrangler had an impressive looking Bloody Mary with an 'interesting' garnish, which you will see when I post photos.  ;)  Anke brought gummi candies, Sarah passed around miniature animals with Brokebackian significance--elk, mules, sheep, coyotes, horses, dogs--and I gave everyone bandannas.  JeffWrangler had the best outfit--a black cowboy hat and a Western shirt.  Very sharp!  Amy gets kudos for organizing the reservation and doing the math on the bill.  We missed John Gallagher terribly, but we felt he was with us in spirit.  I saved some goodies for him which I hope to deliver soon.  :-*

After brunch we went across the street to Whiskey Dust, the Western store, and sorted through the treasure trove of cowboy clothing, gear and paraphernalia crammed into its two small rooms.  We made the saleslady very happy--she had lots of sales to report to her boss.  I told her to give the credit to Brokeback Mountain.  :D

Juan and HobokenJeff had to leave, but the rest of us trooped over to the Leather Man to check out an incredible array of sexy attire--enough for several small cow & calf operations.  We then went for drinks at Chumley's, a very old Village establishment that was a famous speakeasy back in the day.  JeffWrangler and David left us eventually to wend their ways back to Philly and Connecticut, leaving Jenny, Amy, Anke, Sarah and me to walk up to Maracas, a Mexican restaurant on Greenwich Avenue, to eat, drink and gab yet some more.  Incredibly, we bumped into HobokenJeff on the street (he'd gone to check out a big war protest in Union Square) on the way back to his car, and he rejoined the party.

So at last we're back home after a fabulous day of Brokeback goodness.  What's better than making new friends (even though they're really old friends), eating great food, getting tipsy and having adventures?  It don't get much better than that!  Thanks to all my fellow Brokies for a wonderful day.  :-*  :-*  :-*

Not much I can really add at this point, other than to say that I think I never had such a good time, feel I could paw the white out of the moon!

Next time I'm getting a later train back to Philadelphia!

I only live an hour and a half away, yet this was my first trip to Manhattan in over a decade. Who says BBM doesn't change lives?

My grateful thanks to Meryl and Amy for organizing this little rodeo and makin' it really happen, and to Anke and Meryl for the surprise goodies!

Note to self: Remember to explain to Jenny some time what all those bandannas were for at "The Leatherman."

Yeehaw!

No food, shopping, or NYC adventures for me.  Just an hour on the phone and I had a blast!

As Jeff said, not much to add.  I just wanted to say how much I loved chatting with you all, putting voices and personalities with the names and pictures, and getting to be a part of a great Brokie event.  Thanks to Jenny for the generous use of her phone and Pete for setting up the conference call.

It sounds a perfect Brokie day out, you guys! I wish I could have been there to share it with you all, but unfortunately my revision was calling  ::) and the fact that an ocean separates us, but I would have swam all the way there if I got to be with you guys. I can't wait to see pictures and to hear Anke's audio project(that is if she uploads it). I doubt it will ever be this much fun if I ever meet any of you guys and dolls; 1) cause it will be a t-total event for me, damn my age and 2) I am not a very exciting person.
It is looking less and less likely that I will ever meet any of you but there is always D.C 2007! ;)

Love to all :-* :-* :-* :-*

I want an Ennis action figure with shirt-tucking action.

Also one that says "Hunnnh" when I push a button on the back.

And a Jack action figure that licks his lips.

Focus missed the boat on that one.

.....don't forget, the Jack action figure should drop his pants whenever you pull his jacket off!

Oh and just like Barbie,  They'll have tons of clothing options.  Jacks missing Parka,  different colour hats,   stick on sideburns and pornstache,  black outfit from the Dance scene,  Turkey carving knife,  Ennis's coffee pot and of course, Ennis's right hand forms a fist.   Perfect for fighting or wranging it out!   LOL.

Oh quit, you guys!  I'm lusting for those action figures almost as much as I lust after movie Jack & Ennis!  ;D

We didn't bring our Frodolls, Mel.  Didn't want to scare them sheep off!  ;D  (I'll bet they'd look adorable in cowboy hats, though.)  ;D

Becks, I'll look forward to meeting you one of these days.  And don't worry about whether you're an exciting person--a big smile and love for BBM are all you need to have a great time!  :D

LOL at Kirk's first brunch picture!  And a very nice picture it is.   8)

Sarah and I are off to have lunch in Heath Country (aka Brooklyn) and soak up the Ennis vibes.  Any NYers want to meet us there?  PM me before 1:00.  :)

I interrupt this great discussion of action figures to bring you my report on the events of yesterday.

Thanks to Meryl, Juan, Kirk, David, and Philly Jeff for posting such great descriptions so far. (And for the link to my site in your post Juan! Sorry you didn't know about it before. I'll make an announcement somewhere around here for people who didn't know.)

So, as they said, I, along with everyone else who actually lives in New York, got there later than all those who came by planes and trains. We were in the bar area for a little while, very happily surprised when they put on the Brokeback soundtrack for us. I guess we were kinda obvious. LOL. After Jeff from Hoboken came (and though he's been absent from here for lo these many weeks, he promised to come over and register. So you better show Jeff! You're missed!), we were seated at our booth. Presents were passed around. I got my two little dogs from Sarah (no .30-.30 though--dang it!),and my bandana from Meryl, but in my attempt to "break in" my bandana, I crumpled it all up and kinda ruined it, temporarily. But Meryl was kind enough to give me another  :-*

After Kirk and Pete got set up on the conference call, I brought out my little harmonica (sans dents) and brought some smiles to people's faces when I started trying to play "if you want to sing out, sing out" (emphasis on the word "trying"). This was repeated for Anke much later when she interviewed me for the recording project that will hopefully be up for your listening pleasure later today, or maybe when she gets back to Germany. I am not a good interview, tho, so I hope she edits out 90% of what I said. I was all nervous and stupid!

It was great talking to Kirk and Pete in San Fran (and they called me at exactly the same time, so you know that the Brokie Gods had a hand in it), and everyone else there of course. It was too bad I couldn't really be in on all the conversations that happened at the far end of the table, but all the more reason to meet again. I was especially taken by Jeff Wrangler's photos from the movie, including lots of great shots I'd never seen. Thank you for bringing them, Jeff.

Speaking of pics, we got lots of great ones of us (can't wait to see them posted) and yes, Kirk and Pete are in just about every one -- like Jack said, we can do our marriage over the phone! After we ate, we headed over to the Whiskey Dust store, where I had a blast trying on different belt buckles for strummin. The hats were great too, but man, they ain't kiddin--they were expensive! I saw one for $210, and Anke said some of them were $400! I wonder how much Jack and Ennis had to pay for theirs?

The best part was when David called over to me about trying on a flat topped "Joe Aguirre" type hat, and I yelled back, "No!" (I admit, I forgot to add, 'not on your fuckin life!') and this random guy who was not part of our group looks at me and says, "that Joe Aguirre ain't got no right makin us do somethin against the rules." !! I love it--brokies are everywhere! Hoboken Jeff and Juan left our party around then and we had our goodbye hugs. I was glad Juan got to look at the Oscars promo book that I brought to share.

When we got outside the Western wear store I started whoopin and yeehaawin for joy cause of my new belt buckle, and Anke had to calm me down, saying, "Jenny, this thing grabs hold of us, at the wrong time, and in the wrong place..." LOL.

At the fourth stop we made, Chummley's (all still the west village) we got to talkin and drinkin some more, and then the Daughters of the American Revolution descended on us with their tri-pointed Revolutionary War hats and flutes! I thought we were weird, but man...some people! We lamented again the fact that Jake has left town, cause we were in prime Gyllenhaal territory that whole day--and Jake recently shaved the beard off, so we were doublely heart-broken that he skipped town on us now that his sexy face is visible again.

It was another case of the Brokie Gods stepping in to bestow their blessings upon us when, on our way to stop #5, we ran into Jeff from Hoboken about 2 hours after he'd left us to go to the anti-war protests--there he was, crossing the street towards us! We made our way to Marakas, where my friend Antonia (whom I saw the movie with on opening night) met us for more drinks and dinner.

I tried valiantly to get everyone to come and do some Karaokeing with me, but like Anke said, "it ain't gonna be like that." And David added, "if you promise I don't have to saaaang!"

So, quite a day we had! It was so great to meet you all, and though it's always a different experience to talk in a big group of people in a loud room than to post and read from home, I am always up for a brokie gathering, any time, any place. That's some high class entertainment, if you ask me.

Love to all, and best wishes for John, whose presence we missed dearly (along with Paul and DeeDee!),

Jenny
 ;)

No food, shopping, or NYC adventures for me.  Just an hour on the phone and I had a blast!

As Jeff said, not much to add.  I just wanted to say how much I loved chatting with you all, putting voices and personalities with the names and pictures, and getting to be a part of a great Brokie event.  Thanks to Jenny for the generous use of her phone and Pete for setting up the conference call.

I get to post the first picture!

Kirk

Um ... yeah ... mighty purdy, Kirk. ...

Hi folks, just thought I'd report on our expedition to Heath Country.  Sarah and I met Jenny out there at 2:00 and had lunch at a nice French cafe.  The weather was beautiful, and lots of people were out and about.  We strolled up and down the street where we think Heath and Michelle live, though we don't really know any specifics.  Saw a few men with strollers, and even a house with boxes of Huggies (diapers) on the stoop, but no luck seeing Our Boy.  Still, it was nice to feel his vibes.    8)

On the subway on the way home, Sarah and I saw a funny ad.  A bearded, teary-eyed guy in a cowboy hat was clutching a teddy bear dressed in jeans and a bandanna.   The caption was "I wish I could quit you!"  It was an ad for Manhattan Mini-Storage.  ;D

Today Sarah and I are meeting Anke and going somewhere interesting for lunch.  Anke flies home to Germany tonight, and Sarah flies back to England tomorrow night.  What will I do with myself?  Catch up online at last!  :)

Not much more to add about the brunch, you guys described it perfectly - except to say that I had a GREAT time meeting all of you!    I stumbled home completely exhausted on Saturday night but it was well worth it!  Yee-haw!

Hi everybody!

Thank you for all the great descriptions of our Brokie gathering! I really had a great time, too (more when I get back home).  :)

I am at Meryl's place right now and she kindly lets me use her computer (I have been on a withdrawal for three days now). I'll leave sunny NYC this evening and will be back in freezing cold Germany tomorrow afternoon (German time). So you'll just have to wait a little bit longer for my pictures (if you can't fix it, you gotta stand it). Give me another two or three days for the audioproject. I hope I can get it done this week, once real life and work hit me again. It'll be worth the wait, I think. ;)

Enough for now. I wouldn't spend my last hours in New York on a computer, would I?   ;D

Bye bye

 ANKE

P.S. Have you noticed it was only the girls who brought presents?  ;)

Oh David! If I was Randal I would jump on you right then and there! Fuck Lashawn and Lureen! ;)

I have some serious Alberta news for you guys! Today after shopping me and my mum we were sat on a bench in my local park eating chocolate and laughing at the runners(never mind!). And she looked at me and said, "You really want to go to Alberta and see your net friends, dont you?" You notice she calls you guys net friends which is her little way of making you sound like you are about 5 and we are talking about the Teletubies or something when she doesn't realise that most of you are just younger or about the same age as her.  ::) Of course I answered enthusiastically and was like, "You know I would love to, but I know you and dad want to go to Washington that year and we can't have two US holidays in one year" And to cut a long story short; she basically said screw Washington and we can go to Alberta instead. So I am really happy now, I just hope it will happen now cause otherwise I am screwed. So who else would be interested in meeting up in Alberta in Aug 2007? Or am I just on my own?

OMG!!! Wow! Okay, I think we are officially needing to open the discussion and planning/dreaming stage of Alberta 2007! Yippeee! I think that will be a great time, tho a sad month in our Cult Calendar, since Jack and Ennis were denied not one, but two Augusts together, but maybe we can do some rituals up there on the mountain for them, to try and make things right somehow. I am just ecstatic that your mom gets it how much you are part of this community and how effing serious we are about doing this Alberta thing. I have been thinking that even though I want to do it this summer, logistically it's too soon for people. So, let's get some other voices back around this particular issue and start a new thread soon.

Mean time, here's a pic of my new rodeo belt buckle which I love!!!!

I hope this works...if it doesn't please remind me how to do the attachments thing. I'm trying to attach the pic from my hard drive. Nice pics by the way, David!

And, for the record, we should mention that while standing on the street near where Heath and Michelle are rumored to live, at Meryl's suggestion we all tucked our shirts in, to mark the occasion with proper respect. It was a fun outing to my old neighborhood!

On the second one you see Meryl in the middle. ;D)

August in Alberta sounds great, although July would be better if any of us want to recreate the jumping into the water scene! I will pencil this in for 2007, but I can't wait that long so I'm planning to go there this July too. We have at least two Tremblayans who live in that area.

Awesome pictures Meryl!! Thanks for getting them up so fast! And I'm sad to report, the brokie brunch bracelet that I had made of the little twine that you used to wrap our bandanas in has now fallen off my wrist (where it had been since Saturday). It's kinda part of my reliquary now though, so I may have to incorporate it into some piece of artwork or something. Maybe I'll make a collage from the pics of our outing!

Can't wait to hear the audio report!

Actually, Pete, my bloody mary was served to me with the garnish arranged just like that! So we can all thank the bartender (and it was a really good bloody mary, too!). You probably can't tell in the picture, but the skewer is a little black plastic rifle; hence, my "checking for damn coyotes" remark.

Oh, and thanks--'bout the shirt and the photo, I mean.

Title: Audio Project is coming!
Post by: Pipedream on May 04, 2006, 04:15:37 am
Hi fellow Brokies!

Yesterday evening I finally finished my audio project and sent it to our administrator Phillip via e-mail. It's approximately ten minutes long, and I hope you people won't be disappointed by it... (it's actually quite strange to hear myself speak English on that recording; sounds a bit artificial to me, but anyway). I guess it will be online soon, given Phillip can upload it (it's a rather big file).

At this point let me say thank you once again to all of you who attended the Brokie Brunch and made this an unforgettable weekend for me. What an adventure it was! I can't quite believe that I was actually in NYC only days ago!

Special thanks go to Jenny who offered me a place to stay, to Meryl who recommended that nice hotel and showed me and her friend Sarah around town and, of course, to ABC-Will who couldn't come to the Cowgirl but took me out for brunch on Sunday and went up the Empire State Building with me (you can see pictures of that on a special thread at "Anything goes").

Thanks, thanks, thanks! I had a hell of a good time and still congratulate myself on having made the spontaneous decision of going on that trip. Should anyone of you ever happen to visit Germany, let me know!!

Now it's back to online chat again, I guess, and, of course, back to work. I do miss my New-York holiday feeling already!

Many hearty Brokie greetings from my side of the pond!
You all are a great bunch of nice people and I am glad I had the honour to make your aquaintance.

Danke!

 ANKE

I enhanced just a small portion of it, but otherwise I'd have to say this audio documentary is actually outstanding work.  This is really professional quality work, and you should give yourself a pat on the back for it.  In listening to international broadcasters, this is right up there with stuff I've heard on Radio Netherlands.  Just great work!

It's now available as a special report on our front page.  Just click the FRONT button at the top of the menu or head back to the home page: www.bettermost.net and enjoy!

Gosh. Thanks anyway. And cheers! (pouring herself a beer).   ;)

Anke! Thanks for doing that! I loved your editing with movie clips, and your commentary (love the accent!). It was nice to hear everyone's lovely voices. They were all pretty much how I would have imagined. Jenny made me laugh with the harmonica. I got a little teary when you guys were talking about John, but he's back with us now!

And Anke, your daughter is adorable!

ANKE!!!!!!

There are no words for how wonderful that audio interview is!!  I'm sitting here wiping tears from my eyes, it was that great!  All the little sound clips and quotes you interspersed with each of us talking, and the way you edited it so that each subject was covered---just WOW!!  Thank you so much!!  :-*  :-*  :-*

To everyone who may not know, Anke is a radio professional in Germany, and it certainly shows.  I'm sendin' up a prayer of thanks that she made it to the Broncho and produced this amazing and touching record of our day.   Run, everybody, and listen to it pronto!  Yeeehaaawww!!!  ;D  ;D  ;D

Anke -  I can only second everything Meryl has said.  I love NPR/APR/BBC, etc., and this is just excellent work.  I felt like I was listening to an episode of This American Life, but with people I know and have come to love.  Does anyone know if John Gallagher has had a chance to hear it...it will absolutely melt his heart!

Oh-Oh-Oh-MY-GOD!!! Anke, your're a genius! A saint! A magician! This is WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY beyond any of my wildest dreams. Thank you! Thank you for the seemless editing, the clips from the movie (ba-rill-iant!) the touching thoughts about John so eloquently spoken, and for the amazingly well-rounded discussion of the movie, its impact, and our community.

Thank you for giving me something I can show off to all the people in my life about how cool all my brokie friends are, and most of all thank you for making me seem like a normal person instead of the bumbling idiot I felt like during our interview! Yeehaaw! I am going to bed tonight with a huge smile plastered all over my face. I love us!

 :D :D ;D ;D ;) ;) :)

p.s. Your daughter is so beautiful!

Great job, thanks Anke, and again to everyone else who made it!

I can figure out meryl’s voice, the guys, I couldn’t quite tell who is who.  Thanks for sharing this with us.  I asked my husband to listen to the audio report.  He said “Looks like you are not the craziest one out there.”  ;D

Anke, the audio file is pretty cool. Even my dog liked it  :) He was at my feet while I listened to the audio file and when Jenny played the harmonica, he got up really eycited, fidgeting around, looking for the source of that tones and finally ended up staring at the loudspeaker oafishly  ;D

Ennis was right: Jack risked the sheep running off again because of the harmonica sounds. Animals are very sensitive to harmonicas

You are all too good to me! Guess I just have to turn nasty again to stop this torrent of praise...

Dang, the more often I listen to it myself, the more ideas I get what could have been done better, what else from the movie I could have sneaked in, etc.; Alas, now it is how it is, and I still feel a bit uncomfortable with my face right on the front page of BetterMost. For the first time I am actually glad that hardly anybody I know has seen this movie and it is very unlikely that they might stumble across this website. But then, it’s probably only a matter of time…

Jenny, your contribution with the harmonica was crucial to this project. It just made it so much more entertaining (just as Meryl's beautiful words above all others' made it deep and meaningful)! And you really didn’t sound like a bumbling idiot. On the contrary!

Lovin' the harmonica Jenny - you are VERY good.. glad it wasn't broken!!

And you have such a cute voice - I can totally hear you saying what you type now!

I hope there is many Brokie Brunches to come!

I'll definitely take the "cute voice" compliment, but I don't know about the very good on the harmonica part! They were telling me I better quiet down or I'd run them sheep off!

What I'd give to hear your accent! OMG! I love Scottish brouges!!

And David, I've been thinking about you and the shirt all day, wondering if it had arrived. thanks for posting the pic, friend! How do you like it? It really isn't that orange in person, folks. More of a pumpkin-y caramel.

Finally, all the gay voice, schmay voice stuff is bringing me down. We sound like ourselves! I'm over the judgements.

Not one, but two of them: one from me and one from my dog:
Danke, Anke!
Danke, Anke!
But be careful ever meeting my dog: he kisses everybody he likes. And now you're sure on his  list  :)

I had to think for a few minutes where the expression "Danke, Anke" comes from. It's from "Die Wochenshow" with Anke Egelke and that guy with the big nose. Lück, Ingolf Lück is his name. I barely remembered that show, but the expression is still very vivid.

(Ahem) Class is now in session. . . .

You in the back, quiet down before you run them sheep off again. ...

Jenny, are you listening?

Today's topic, class, is "The Hankie Code."

Yes, indeed, all those different colored bandannas for sale at the Leatherman are known in certain gay circles as "hankies." They are used to indicate interest in various forms of sexual activity, and the role one is interested in playing in that activity. The various colors indicate the activity. One's preferred role is indicated by which back pocket of one's trousers one uses to display the hankie. Left indicates active role, or "top," and right indicates passive role, or "bottom." Collectively, this is known as "the Hankie Code."

Some of the more common colors and what they indicate are as follows:

Navy/dark blue: fucking
Light blue: oral sex
Gray: B&D (bondage and discipline; also commonly bondage without discipline)
Black: Heavy S&M
Yellow: "water sports" or "golden showers" (NB: frequently involves imbibing large quantities of beer beforehand; does not involve bathtubs, swimming pools, etc.)
White: masturbation (not common)
Kelly green: hustler (left), john (right)
Hunter green: "daddy" (left), "boy" (right)
Red: doesn't involve blood, but you don't want to go there
Orange: anything, anytime (left), nothing right now (right)

This concludes today's lesson, class. There will be a quiz tomorrow.

 ;D

I mean, I never see those hankies in use.   Did guys carry charts to make sure they didn't misinterpet a color code?

Thanks for the enlightenment Jeff! Very interesting. I was getting ready for something to do with tying up or making some kind of primitive loincloth with them! What if it's a rainbow one? I thought I saw that there.

And, biggest question of the night, what does it mean if you put your leather gloves in your back left pocket all the time like Ennis did???? Except that one time they were in the right pocket, as I recall from a certain quiz question on the BBM quiz game at old PT.

Any chance that left pocket might have been an accurately chosen side for Ennis being the active role? Or is that too much of an assumption (especially since that code was probably not in use in Wyoming back then!)

Good connection Jenny, but I thought the gloves were usually in his right  back pocket. Sorry if I'm wrong, I haven't seen it since March (GASP! Has it been that long?!). However, I do know that the exception to whichever side he usually has them on is when he comes into the house to check on the crying girls when Alma is washing clothes (I was the one that asked that question).

Well, hmmm....I am wary to bet at this point, since I lost the last bet I made. Does anyone know the answer?

Is it the right or left back pocket that Ennis' gloves are in usually?

I think a "rainbow" is just pretty. If there was a black-and-white checked one, that's for "safer sex." I'll check my sources at home tonight about the gloves.  ;D

Ennis wouldn't have known--but maybe somebody in the Wardrobe Dept. did!

I've never been a gay man, but I do remember the gay man hankie thing that was very popular in the 80s.  Hence the haiku I wrote way back when about Ennis's gloves in his back pocket.  I wondered why I never got any feedback on it, it never occurred to me most people just might not have known what the hell I was talking about.  I'm going to go see if I can find it.
Title: Re: Tell ya what...we're doing a Brokie Brunch in NYC
Post by: Jeff Wrangler on May 09, 2006, 06:06:58 pm
The hankie thing is still very popular in the leather scene.

Jenny, according to my sources, there is a significance to gloves worn in the back pocket, but you don't want to know what it is, and I'm sure Ennis and Jack didn't do it!  :o

On the other hand, here's one that would be appropriate. I'm not sure I'd recognize a "rust" hankie if I saw one, but according to my sources "rust" on the left is "cowboy," and "rust" on the right is "his horse!"  ;D

From memory, I thought Ennis usually had his gloves in his right pocket. A research project... :D  Guess I'll just have to force myself to watch the film again.

*goes off to google search significance of red hankies*

Hmmm, yes that's a kink I can't see the appeal of. There was a book on it in Leather Man called "Trust". Meryl, it's a really good thing you didn't get red bandanas...

I listened to it up at my Moms tonight before dinner.   I pulled up the group photo so she could see everyone while the audio was playing.   I pointed out each person as they spoke.   Mom was as impressed as much as I was!!!

Great work Anke!       I felt like I was there again!    :-*

Way too complicated of a system!   LOL.

I mean, I never see those hankies in use.   Did guys carry charts to make sure they didn't misinterpet a color code?

Complicated is not the word, one site has 78 different codes including white lace and gold lame. :o

And god forbid if you were colour blind!   LOL

It is great isn't it? But do I really sound like that? I have to listen to my voice all the time on answerphone messages, and the audiotape still took me by surprise.  :o ::) ;D

Someone once noticed a white handkerchief in my left pocket behind my gray bandanna. He asked me what the white handkerchief meant. I told him it meant I had sinus trouble.  ::)

Jeff, you are certainly a fount of interesting knowledge!  I think someone needs to produce a gay version of Jeopardy! and make the gay hanky code a regular category.   ;D

I had to look up the red hanky code, too, of course.  Owie!   :P

Yes, Ennis usually wears his gloves in his back right pocket, but that doesn't quite jive with his perceived role in his relationship with Jack, seeing that the right side indicates the partner on the receiving end of things.  Ah well, not every symbolic meaning can be applied to this movie.  ;)

David, I'm glad you finally got to hear the audio.  I played it for a couple of friends last night, and they thought it was great and wanted to look at the pictures.  I think they finally started thinking of my obsession as being less of a jokey thing and more of a really good thing.  8)

Speaking of really good things, Jenny and I are meeting John Gallagher tomorrow!  I can't wait to meet him and chew the fat about the Broncho.  Yeehaw!  :D

See you tomorrow!!!

Pass many hearty greetings onto John and tell him I'm a huge fan of his intelligent and funny posts when you meet him (it all started with the hilarious "Cowboy etiquette" thread on IMDB...). I would have loved to meet him, too.
Well, I'll be thinking of you guys, wearing my brand new Brokie Brunch t-shirts that just arrived today.  :)

Yeah, Jenny, I got them!!! Thank you, the are great!!!

Have fun at the meeting! ;D

He calls himself the "Naked Cowboy".    He plays the guitar and gets his pic taken with the tourists.    They stuff money in his boots.   From what I've read, he makes a good living from it!

Hmmm,    I should do that!    The city will pay me to stay clothed!     Ha ha ha!

Well, well, well, I'd heard about the Naked Cowboy, but I didn't realize he was so....gifted.  ;)  Perhaps we should invite him to the next Broncho.  :D

Friends, John Gallagher sends his love to you all!  Jenny and I met him for drinks over near Grand Central, and we talked for two solid hours about all things Brokeback.  He's a very young 50-something with beautiful long silver grey hair and a fabulous smile and is as funny and sweet in person as he is online.  When I get my pictures back in a couple of weeks (I have to use up the roll of film) you'll see for yourselves what a hottie he is!  ;D

He's doing really well and is in good spirits.   Some words don't come easily to him, but by and large you'd never know he had had a stroke only three weeks ago.  He says he still has a lot of trouble reading, but for some reason Leslie's fanfic is an exception!  ;D  He is working several times a week with a very good therapist and will eventually be having a procedure (non-invasive) to close a hole in his heart that is a potential danger if he has a clot again.

Celeste called and chatted briefly, and we left a message for Clarissa.  I gave John a bag of Anke's gummi candies, a miniature sheep and coyote from Sarah, a bandanna, and pictures of the gang at the Broncho, and Jenny brought two little silver cowboy hats for his key chain.  He hasn't figured out how to listen to the audio yet, but he will soon.

We talked about how much we would have loved to go to Alberta this summer, but since it can't happen this year, we definitely want to go next year.  In the meantime, Central Park will have to fill in for Moose Mountain.  We're going to do a picnic one of these days when the weather's nice.  Anybody know a good place to buy elk meat sandwiches?  ;D

Yes, it was a very fine time, a wonderful time. I felt so much love coming from this man, for our community, and for what brought us together. He said he does not get frustrated because he knows he could easily have not made it at all had a friend not come over and insist that he go to the hospital.

I agree with Meryl--he is doing great! And I told him so quite a few times, and I really mean that. I can't wait to see him again, no matter what the circumstances.

We love you John! Them Chilean sheep are moving back to their own heard, sure as the sun rises and sets everyday.

Now about them elk meat sandwiches...

Hi Meryl !

Glad to hear that John is doing so well!     We'll definately have to get the group together in NY again someday.

I'm not sure where to get Elk meat, but the Skylight Diner on the corner of 9th and 34th street serves a great Bison Burger!

For those of you who lurk, or haven't made personal connections with others here yet, I can only encourage you to take inspiration from Jack - the beauty and wonder of these relationships are extraordinary.

Reach out a hand (maybe not like Jack did in the first tent scene  ;D), but you might be surprised at who reaches back.

Leslie - John was saying how familiar ideas are easiest for him to grasp.  New information is just really foreign and his brain has little facility for comprehending it.  But, apparently, his BBM friends and memories are so deep that they are very easy for him.

And he said that when he could read/understand almost nothing, he could still read your stories.  He wasn't sure why, but it was the one thing he was still enjoying.  And that he was keeping it a secret from his therapist!!!!  The secrets we keep in the name of BBM!

I would have posted it, but thought for some reason you knew of it.

I am so happy to hear that John is doing so well! He's in my prayers every morning, and I'm glad to hear that procedure for his heart isn't "invasive." That's been worrying me.

I'll look forward to seeing the pictures. I just knew from his avatar that John is a cutie! And I love his sense of humor. I posted something once about thinking he was cute, and he responded that his aunts would have described him as "mutton disguised as lamb"!

Meryl, you should invite the Naked Cowboy to the next brunch.

He can play his guitar for us--as long as I don't have to s-a-a-a-a-n-g!  ;D

O Brokies dear, be of good cheer,
On Hudson Street we soon shall meet.
From near and far, plane, train and car
Will bring us to our rendezvous.

Bring cameras, phones and pheremones,
And by all means, wear jeans, tote beans;
We'll raise a toast to Friends who post
And wait to hear of our good cheer.

The Mountain lends to all good Friends
A spritely air and aspect fair.
We'll feast with glee and guarantee
Of Ennis and Jack there'll be no lack!

Yeehaw!  ;D

See y'all soon!  :-*

I am posting this here since it seems the most approprite thread in which to do so.  I just wanted to fill y'all in on a little get-together in Chicago on Monday.  I had the great pleasure of meeting Meryl, who honored me with her company for a brief visit and lunch.  We spent far too little time together, but what time there was was an absolute delight.

She is as you would imagine from knowing her on-line: thoughtful, well-considered in what she says, clearly intelligent, warmly funny and caring.  She brought with her a bottle of whiskey, which I'm keeping for my BBM friends to share at some point, and three bandanas from the Brokie Brunch in NYC - one for me, one for Courtney and one for Andrew, who I still need to send them to.

It was just a wonderful reminder that the movie was a start - a powerful and compelling start to something big - but the rest is how it plays out in our lives.  And to see the friends it has created, as evidenced in this wonderful meeting on Monday, is I think the greatest gift of all.

I'm looking forward to the pictures Meryl, and to the resurrection of our favorite thread.  Much love to you, friend...

Celeste, you beat me to it!  ;D

When I got back to town, it turned out that a friend was here for an art convention, and I ended up spending most of Tuesday thru today with her, so I didn't get the darn film to the developer.  But tomorrow for sure, I promise!

I loved our one-on-one time in the Windy City.  It became a bit windier on Monday, what with all our gabbing.  ;)

Brokies, Celeste has a really cool apartment, right downtown, which takes up one whole floor and has great views.  You can look out on one side and see yourself reflected in the building across the way (it's all mirror glass), which is strange, but oh so cosmopolitan.  Her kitty is adorable and loves to sit on her laptop, just like my kitty.  And every nice thing she so kindly said about me goes triple for her--she's lovely in every way!  8)

Photos to follow soon, including some of John and Jenny and me at our get-together.  :D

All you sometimes need a silly little song to feel what you're saying--

Shiny happy people laughing
Meet me in the crowd
People people
Throw your love around
Love me love me
Take it into town
Happy happy
Put it in the ground
Where the flowers grow
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Everyone around love them, love them
Put it in your hands
Take it take it
There's no time to cry
Happy happy
Put it in your heart
Where tomorrow shines
Gold and silver shine

Shiny happy people holding hands
Shiny happy people laughing

Hi everybody!  :)

Better late than never: at last I had a chance to wear one of my New York Brokie Brunch T-Shirts and have some pictures taken of it!
Boy, what a day it was! We (me, my husband and my little girl) kicked off our very own hiking season today, packed a rucksack and walked up the "Feuerberg" near our home. Blue sky, mild summer temperatures and the air so crystal clear, you couldn’t get enough of it! After that awfully long, cold German winter and damp spring I just wanted to drown in those rich colours and the view from the top of the mountain. Elating!

And, of course, my memories of that incredible New York adventure were with me today. I had to smile at the thought of it. What different worlds we live in! And, yet, how connected we are!
I often think about you lovely people. Today was one of these days that I felt: life can't get much better than this. I'm very grateful.

Yours

 ANKE   :-*

But if it has to end here, I think it's fitting that Anke has the last word, or last picture at least, given that she travelled the farthest to be with us, and gave us all such a wonderful gift with her incomparable audio piece about our Brunch.

Ich bin ein Brokie!     :)

Ich bin ja ein Brokie!  (though I resemble a jelly donut)  ;D  I think that line deserves repeating (see new sig).  :)

Thanks for the laugh, Jenny and Anke.  And the audio is the perfect last touch!  8)

Those pictures of your town are beautiful, Anke.  So idyllic, tucked into the hills like that.  Now I'm ready to go to a German Brokie Brunch!  :D

That is interesting.    My local bakery has a donut called a "Bismark".  It is powder sugar coated with jelly and whipped cream filling.   They are very heavy!    Eat one of those and you feel like you have a ships anchor in your belly!   LOL

Don't bring any to the picnic guy.

LOL  Hi Juan!

No,  no donuts!   I call them Do-Nots now!       My not so girlish figure is the result of too many co-workers bringing in donuts to work!   So they are off of my diet now.     I hope to slim down into Jack Twists pants eventually.     Hmm,  that didn't come out right but it sure sounds good!    LOL     I'll settle for Heaths pants.   Although neither of those guys really has a nice bubble butt.      Not that .....I'd better stop now!!!      LOL

Oh yeah,  the next picnic?    July right Meryl?

What picnic guy? Did I miss something? (Actually, yeah, jenny, you did--about 2 months of posts on CT. LOL)

Welcome back Juan! And, I am glad to see this thread is still alive! David, are you coming to Pridefest next weekend? How about Jeff Wrangler? We should make a banner that says "Brokeback fans for Pride." Except I'll be staffing my booth all day--drat!

Anyway, I hope to see you there (and Juan, I know I don't even have to say that to you, JCinNYC2006 !!)

Hey Jenny!  You haven't missed anything, there's some talk about a picnic but I'm not sure when.  And you'll definitely see me next week at Pride!  Maybe I'll even wear one of the shirts (although I should've bought a larger size).  Hopefully it'll be a beautiful day for it.

Juan

Yes, everyone PLEASE visualize a beautiful sunny day for Pridefest so I don't get rained on. The event is rain or shine. I don't really want to spend the extra bucks for a canopy tent for my booth. Juan, I'm gonna PM you now about a couple of things....

Sorry, you won't be seeing me. I haven't done New York Pride in years. Kinda over it. I do think it's important to be visible right here where I live, work, and pay taxes--Philadelphia, except that I was ill with a migraine for our own Pride festival last Sunday.  :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you for nice weather.  :)

You said it, Jeff!  :-*

To really get in the spirit of remembering that day, I recommend listening to Anke's terrific audio report.  It's still on our Front Page, down at the bottom.  But just in case you can't find it, here's the link: http://www.phillipdampier.net/downloads/BrokieBrunchAudioProject.mp3 (http://www.phillipdampier.net/downloads/BrokieBrunchAudioProject.mp3)

Happy Anniversary, NYC-Broncho-goers!

I remember being in Austin, TX that weekend, buying boots and whiskey-toasting y'all!

A lot's happened in a year.  Nice to see so many still around, and planning new Brokie adventures.

Cheers,
Paul

Wow! Those were the days...  :D
I haven't listened to that audio thing for a year myself. In fact, nobody of my family got to hear it. It's one of my Brokie secrets...   ;)
I've got very fond memories of that short New York visit, too. Gotta come back one day!

Anke...your journey to New York was my inspiration to go to Holland to see the play this past March. I figured if you'd come to NY for a meal, I could go to Holland for a show (in a language I don't speak, no less!). I am so sorry your schedule didn't work out, but don't worry, I'll be back. I loved everyone I met and want to see all of them...I MEAN ALL OF YOU EUROBROKIES...again!

Hugs,

L

And part of my inspiration to go to the BBQ.  I'm glad you're back from Shanghai, I missed you.  :)

Thanks, Meryl! That was a picture my daughter took at a carnival evening where I was "on duty" (had to report about it for a newspaper).  :)

I really hope to meet you girls one day, too!
And Clarissa, yeah, I'm back from Shanghai and I know I still suck at getting online regularly again... Gotta work on that...  ::)

See ya all on the forums!

It's been back, dear. Just a long time since we've seen each other. I took the beard off for a dual portrait of my dad and me last summer, but then I grew it back in the fall. The mustache stays in the picture permanently.

I wore that shirt to go out just last night!

The jacket, however. ... Let's just say, I can't button it anymore.  :(

Yes, too bad Whiskey Dust is gone.  :(

Well, we'll just have to remedy that.  ;)  Come to Boston for the AIDS walk!  ;D
