I have two, a buff colored Stetson with a braided black leather band I've had for years. My Dad bought it for me one Christmas when I started taking my boys horseback riding on a regular basis...and living in California I have a straw one as well with a beautiful pheasant feather band that I wear to all the Little League Games much to my youngests dismay.. lol... I've also got a pair of Justin boots, black, ropers.
Here's a pic of me wearing my straw cowboy hat!

I actually own two straw ones. One is more like an English riding hat - it's sort of pine-colored brown with a black band that ties into a bow in the back. Very prim and proper, and it fits me perfectly. I wore it all the time on my first trip to England - it was so blustery every day that it was the perfect thing to keep my hair from constantly blowing into my eyes (I *hate* that).
The other one is...My Ennis hat. It doesn't fit me quite as well as the other one, so I don't wear it as much as I'd like. But I like the way it looks on one of my dressers. I should really put up a coat hanging peg and hang it from there.
Did you see the bonus feature on the Making of the movie, with Heath and Jake wearing those shower caps over their cowboy hats all the time? LOL!
Another thing, my straw version got beat up on the roller coaster ride yesterday. D'you know how I can, uh, fluff it? I was thinkin of submerging it in a horse trough, then leaving it to dry in the sun. 8)
My husband has 'dress' hats in black, sand, grey felt and one straw; three 'everyday' hats in felt and straw; and four working hats.
Son has 'dress' hats in black and sand, one straw; and two 'everyday' hats in straw
I have 'dress' hats in forest green, red, black, sand, grey; three 'everyday' hats....
Am I the only one here that does horse shows? You gotta have different hats for your different outfits!!
these are the traditional 'cowboy' styles...we have 5,345 baseball caps (just kidding, but we got a lot!!)
also, a brief comment on 'dress' 'everyday' and work...you buy them new and when they get too worn for the show ring they get moved to 'everyday' status....when they get too stained to wear into town then they get demoted to work hats!
Rarely throw away a hat...
Del, you ride dressage? I'm impressed. That takes a lot of skill!
What does it look like? Is there a pic on the net/link you can find?
Not at this time. But for you, I'll see what I can do...
This is the closest thing I can find to it. It's almost kind of a straw fedora, and mine is about this color, a little shallower in the top part, and with a wide black gauze band that ties into a floppy bow in the back.

I have some photos of me wearing it in Wales, actually. Next time I have to go to Kinko's, I'll scan one onto a disk there (alas, we have no scanner here or at home) and post it if you're interested.
Here's a pic of me wearing my straw cowboy hat! That hat is very becoming on you, Lee! And very fitting for rugged, Rocky Mountain-high Colorado.

Yea but it just got a little flattened when that roller coaster threw me over at Six Flags last weekend. But I still wear it anyway, it's got more character now! Were you at Six Flags Over Texas, in Arlington? That's a cool place for cowboy hats, too! (BTW, I was born in Grand Prairie, part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area).
Black is an excellent color...spend as much as you can reasonably afford...a good hat will last decades if you treat it right. Buy from a real western store, they will block it for free...never pick it up by the brim...only the crown and keep it in the box it came in...
ok! I will stop with the hat care tips!! (Can you tell I like cowboy hats?)
I sold my colored hats this year...I am 41...I am gonna just admit here that my rodeo queen days are over...*sigh*
ok I kept the dk green...LOL!!
Just get a nice neutral color and have it blocked by the store's expert to suit your face...you CAN'T go wrong. It will go with jeans or suits...you DO have a nice pair of boots??Nope...don't even have boots! :-\ What kind of self-respecting Texan am I?! I might take up your suggestion, Jess; I have a friend here who tells me he would love to see me duded up in cowboy gear! ;)
7 Cowboy hats
4 Pair of boots (2 dress)
2 Belt Buckles
2 Belts
3 pair of Wranglers
God I'm sad
Just remember, this is Bettermost. You are probably one belt buckle away from demigod status in this forum.
Well put, David! :D
And if the buckle is made from a medal you won for rodeoin, Scott, you're a three-quarters god!

They might even build you a temple. ;)
Please look me up if U ever come to Denver, Geri. I want to buy U a hat!! As for me, mine has a strap, which I know is cheating and looks kinda dumb, but I luv my hat and couldn't bear to lose it. It got kinda flattened when that roller coaster threw me, but it still works!!LOL! I will look you up if I get to pull another "Thelma and Louise" with my friend. I sure wish mine had a strap that day .I wasn't about to catch the next train back to buy another. Two cowgirls and we didn't have any rope on us to shimmy me down the cliff. lol. What kind of cowgirls were we? I asked my friend for her red hat after that and she said NO! Some friend! :-\

UH OH, David...I don't think he has any plans for coffee OR construction!!!
Why I bet he don't even have his contractors liscence!!
LOL!!
I think David does too!!
Hopefully Scott is laughing too!Neither have I....till now ;)
I've never whispered on the Internet before. :D
I have a black Wrangler, tan Stetson and a straw larry maghanI especially like the red lining in that Wrangler, bb1, and that band is very stylish too. Plus, it fits me like a glove!! Guess you better keep a close watch on that hat!!
Lynne, you got it!!
Lynne you will have NO problem finding a hat that you will look good in out here!
Okay, since this is family hour, here is my husband in his cowboy hat with one of his home-brewed sodas.

I've always thought I look stupid in hats.Me, too--I've always thought I look dorky in hats, and have very rarely owned any in my forty years of life. I did purchase one last year, kind of like a fishing hat (not unlike the hat we see Ennis wearing in the latter part of the film), that I wear on some of my drives to Kerrville. I'm thinking of buying a baseball cap for the upcoming trip to Estes Park, but may go ahead and wear my fishing hat instead.
It's more like Lee's HUBBY made the catch.....Absolutely, FRiend! I've never met Lee in person, nor even heard the sound of her voice, but I love the energy she emanates and that is so evident even through online communications.

just the truth, m'dear, just the truth: HE made the catch!
Maybe he knows it, maybe he doesn't. But if he doesn't he's blind.
My wife says she caught the prize and i just shake my head---IIIIIII made the catch of all time with her.
I'm looking forward to seeing you and your family in Estes Park, Jack! And I especially want to get a picture of you and your wife on horseback!!I didn't get that picture so do you have another pic of you and your wife on horseback??

Everybody who bought new cowboy hats this fall (that includes you, Castro showing attendees!), you need to add to this poll and post a picture!!
Hey, Lee/Front and Lee/Richard.That looks great!
I bought a new hat at the gay rodeo this past weekend. They had a much better selection than what I can find out east. Here's Lee and I (with my new hat). It's rather dark. I "borrowed" this picture from Monica's posting over at DC:(http://www.sunponyranch.com/images/Paul,%20Lee.jpg)
I just bought my first hat at the Rodeo!
I love it!
I'll re-post the pic here.
I LOVE that cowboy hat necklace. :)(http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m47/Penthesilea06/IM000671.jpg)
Lee you handsome thing!! Good choice...so happy you had a good time out there...
I just now had to change my vote, from no hat to black hat, which I purchased on Saturday, September 22nd of this year, while attending the gay and lesbian rodeo in Austin. Haven't worn it, mind you, since Sunday, September 23rd, but at least I have one now (and hopefully will enjoy more occasions to display it).You look gooooood in that hat Cowboy!
For pics (courtesy of Eric and one gentle lady present at the rodeo), please see my blog.
Texas in general, sure, but Austin ain't really a cowboy-hat town, as Eric noted on his recent visit here. Austin's kind of an anomaly for the state as whole (and on the whole, that's a good thing); no one would look askew seeing you sport a cowboy hat on the street, certainly, but you wouldn't necessarily see a lot of others doing so (unless you were at the Rainbow Cattle Company on Saturday night! ;)).Now that sounds like a fun place!! ;D

and you DO look good in a hat!Thank you kindly! I do wear my San Antonio Spurs baseball cap pretty much everytime I go out in daytime...Eric saw me in this while in town. In fact, this was what I wore to the rodeo, only to be replaced by the black cowboy hat.
