Title: The Brokeback Cult: The New Testament
Post by: Meryl on August 03, 2006, 01:17:02 am
In the thread titled "The Brokeback Cult" I am going to be posting, in some sort of semi-organized manner, some of the wisdom and humor found in our original thread started March 1, 2006, at the IMDb message board for Brokeback Mountain.

Fellow Brokies, please feel free to use this thread to comment on that material, and if you feel moved to add to the sacred texts, in the blessed words of Ma Twist, "You are welcome...if you want."  8)

Dear High Priestess Meryl,

I already just sent you a PM about this, and you must a got those messages I left at your place...

Now I finally know where the High Priestess sprang from....  and to think that this prophet was relegated to third string status on the Performance Thread!!   I am so ashamed!   :'(

OK, now seriously, I love the companion thread to this one, Brokeback Mountain Cult.  ;D  May I always be worthy of bieng in its presence.  Jack bless you for bringing this Sacred Thread from TOB back to life again!!

Brokies at BetterMost will bless you for having shared this with them.  Thank you High Priestess!

Here's a new text I wrote that appears on Page 10 of the Performance Thread:

A BROKEBACK BLESSING

For the Light of Heath
For the Grace of Jake
For the Silence of Ang

We thank you, Lord

For the Soul of Ennis
For the Spirit of Jack
For the Vision of Annie

We thank you, Lord

For in the Light of Heath there is knowledge of Self
In the Grace of Jake there is Joy
Let the Silence of Ang be a sounding bell to
Destroy
Employ
Enjoy...

For the Strength of the Earth
For the Breath of the Wind
For the Spark of the Fire

We thank you, Lord

For the Light of Heath
For the Grace of Jake
For the Silence of Ang

We thank you, thank you, Lord

This prayer appeared in the Dress Rehearsal thread that preceded the Performance Thread:

The Brokie's Prayer

Our Boys, who met on Brokeback, honored be your names.
Your story done, your souls be one in heaven, as they were on Brokeback.
Grant us this day our friendly posts,
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespassed against you.
And lead us not into vexation, but deliver us from hatred.
For yours was the struggle, and the union, and the triumph, forever and ever.

One more contribution from the Performance Thread:

Chant

East is the Wind, is the gold sun rising; eagle flying free sees the open door

South is the Fire, is the red noon blazing; wolf upon the ledge feels what came before

West is the Water, is the blue dusk falling; brown bear in his cave looks to what will be

North is the Earth, is the black night cloaking; elk in forest deep knows the mystery

Brokeback is the Wind, is the Fire glowing,  Brokeback is the Water, is the Earth made strong

Hearts that are joined upon the Sacred Mountain must forever dance to its ancient song.

Yeehaw indeed.  Very excellent idea meryl !!  As an aside, it looks like the old cult thread from imdb has found its way into the archives.  http://www.geocities.com/bbmarchive/ (http://www.geocities.com/bbmarchive/)

You have to scroll down to the Boards Addiction section of the menu.  But, there it is!

By the way...
The archive is looking mighty fine these days.

Thanks, Amanda.  I've got the link in the first post of the Cult thread, too.  But as you can see from the archived thread, it's pretty confusing to read, thus my attempts at organizing and editing.  :P

Meryl, thanks so much for bumping the Brokeback Cult thread by adding the Book of Pierre.

I started to read it back when it was created here on BM, but didn't like it much. Yes, every cult needs it's sceptics and blasphemers and this was me.
But today I reread it and now I'm a converted believer  ;D

I will never again be able to see someone making the sign of the cross without automatically tucking in my shirt. Luckily I'm not a catholic  ;).

Thanks, David!  I found it on a Czech website (http://www.eusebius.cz/photos.php?fid=220&cid=1).  There are lots of nice hi-res pictures there, some of which don't look like they're from the finished film.  8)

I've noticed that a Brokeback Prayer (based on the Lord's Prayer) has already been posted here. However, before I even knew that the official Cult existed, I wrote my own Brokeback Prayer. Is there room for both? I hope there may be! Perhaps mine could be for those adherents of the Southern Rite of the Cult (i.e., south of the Equator - the Australian Annex). The rubrical instructions attached to the recitation of the prayer are, appropriately, in red:

Rubric: Commence with ritual shirt tuck and muttered mantra “salright, salright, salright”

The Brokeback Prayer

Our Brokeback
Which art in Wyoming
Hallowed be thine Icy Peaks
Thy Snow-Melt come
Thy will be done on Grand Teton
As it was in the Big Horn Mountains
Give us this day our daily Beans
And lead us not into the Grieving Plain
But deliver us from Childress and Riverton
For thine is the Love between Cowboys
The Love between sweet Jack and Ennis
For ever and ever
Yee-Haw

Rubric: Finish with ritual shirt tuck and muttered mantra salright, salright, salright?

It makes me happy to see a new addition to the Cult after many months of inactivity.  Thanks so much!  :-*

Hi Meryl - I'm glad you liked my Brokeback Prayer. I have only just discovered the Chez Tremblay area of BetterMost and in so doing, came across the Cult. I can very much relate to the rituals described herein. Someone posted a message advising that s/he remembered Jack & Ennis in prayer each day at sunset. I have a similar ritual. Each day at dusk, as the sun is setting in the west, I pour myself a glass of red wine and toast Jack & Ennis with it. I have a photo of them in the dozy embrace in my living room, and I raise my glass to them before taking a sip. No matter how tough a day I've had at work, I always feel better after performing this little ritual.

I love rituals.  I guess that's why I started the Cult in the first place.  I observe rituals intermittently, but my only real daily ritual is to come to BetterMost without fail.  It's lovely that you have a very personal ritual that you perform every day.

No, Jane, this is the place for any new stuff, including comments.  I decided to limit the the Cult thread to material originally posted over at imdb.  As I (slowly) add on to it, the absence of new comments helps keep it more readable.  :)

So any new items of a devotional nature can go right here.   Thanks for askin'. 8)

I posted my Lord's Brokeback Prayer over at David925's blog. In response, David wrote this Hail Mary Jack & Ennis:

Hail Ennis and Jack, full of cuteness
Brokeback Mountain is with you.
Blessed are you both among all cowboys
And blessed are those nights in the tent, up on the QT.
Sexy Ennis and Jack, Brothers to all gay men,
Remember the rest of us, now and the next time you're up on Brokeback.

Thought you'd like to see it.  :)

That's a most valid point you're making there, Meryl. When I wrote my Brokeback Prayer, I meant it to be taken very seriously - reverently, in fact. However, when I posted it over at David's blog (I wanted to share it with the nice folks over there), David's reaction was to wail with laughter LOL. I think he thought I was satirising the Lord's Prayer (I wasn't LOL). Turned out that David had some pretty horrendous experiences with the Catholic education system whilst growing up, and was probably somewhat bemused by a prayer (first time?) being posted at his blog. I ended-up laughing along with David. I could appreciate where he was coming from. As I said to him in a pm, "Laughter is always better than tears."

However, having said that, my Brokeback Prayer is, for me, a very serious aspect of the Cult. In fact, I carry a copy of it in my wallet.

I have a terrible confession to make. As an indication of how long it's been since last I recited the Lord's Prayer, I went and left two lines out of the previously posted version. Here's the revised, corrected version:

Our Brokeback
Which art in Wyoming
Hallowed be thine Icy Peaks
Thy Snow-Melt come
Thy will be done on Grand Teton
As it was in the Big Horn Mountains
Give us this day our daily Beans
And forgive us our four years in the Wilderness
As we forgive those who bear tire-irons against us
And lead us not into the Grieving Plain
But deliver us from Childress and Riverton
For thine is the Love between Cowboys
The Love between sweet Jack and Ennis
For ever and ever
Yee-Haw

Lots of Love,

Thank you, Lynne. Me too! I had to dig through boxes of old books at the back of a wardrobe, and noticed the  discrepancy when I consulted a dusty old prayer book, located there.

I'm not sure what the "Alberta Gathering" is, but I would consider it an honour if my Brokeback Prayer was recited as part of the ritual.

Kerry - the Alberta Pilgrimage is a trip schedule for late July.  Details can be found at this thread:

If you're feeling like travelling across the planet, you'd be most welcome.  We're still in the very early planning stages, but I'm hoping to move heaven and earth to make it, as are many here.  It promises to be a terrific opportunity to visit some of the film locations and commune with nature and other Brokies.

Hugs,
Lynne

Yes, Meryl, that is correct. The "Wilderness" there refers to the wilderness of the spirit experienced by Jack and Ennis in the four desolate years that transpired between "Well, see you around, I guess" and "Sonofabitch, sonofabitch."

I confess that I smiled myself as I wrote the "Give us this day our daily Beans" line. No way to get around the beans thing, though. I mean, what's the name of this site? BetterMost, right?! So yes, I too had a chuckle. I knew where you were coming from and I really felt very deeply for you, when you told of your experiences with the "good nuns," whilst growing up. It's therapeutic and cathartic to laugh. Gotta be better than crying all the time, and God knows, I've already shed my share of tears over dear Jack & Ennis.
Much love,
Kerry

Wo, I totally missed Heath's birthday. Guess this cements my sentence as a confirmed Gyllenhaalic. Oh well, that just leaves more for you Heathens!!

I hope the High Priestess is not prejudiced against Gyllenhaalics, because I am here to petition you to consider proclaiming May 1 as "Jack and the Wind" day in honor of the classic thread that was started on May 1, 2006 by our esteemed Brokie sister and Social Events comoderator, atz75 (Amanda).

Do I detect another Gyllenhaalic entering the fold? Welcome, IWISHIKNEW! (Aren't we all so glad that he never learned?)

Today I'm wondering what date it was when Jack said, "FRiend, that's the most you've spoke in two weeks." Cause I would like to ask for that date to be named official Brokie FRiend Day.

What a lovely experience was mine just now reading thru the Cult thread, discovered only moments ago.  I would love to share with the other members of the community the ritual I go through on a nightly basis.  First of all, my home is a shrine to Brokeback Mountain, with many framed objects on the walls and a number of precious objects behind glass, including Ennis' creel and net, which will be making the trip with me to the BBQ in Colorado.  Since last fall I have concluded nearly every day on the telephone with my dear friend and we recite the Dozy Embrace, some of the loveliest paragraphs in the English language, as a sort of prayer for the whole day.  We take turns reciting to each other.  Hopefully there will be a few moments in the Alberta experience for us to continue our nightly tradition of the Dozy Embrace with a group who truly understands and recognizes its significance.

Let be, AMEN and YEEHAW!

One is tempted to say that every day should be Brokie Friend Day. But yes, a special day would be well... special. This is probably OT for this Thread but for me that was when, with those words, Ennis subconsciously sent Jack a dozen long stem red roses and a box of imported chocloates.

I go crazy when I read some people did not see the love developing between them. Holy Naomi Mother of Jake, all it lacked was the heavens opening up!

Grand idea is what I am really trying to say here, Front-Ranger, Friend. Amen and Yee Haw.

Well here in Bettermost, a "Yeehaw" from the heart after an "Amen" is considered proper. Makes us all feel a little closer to Brokeback Mountain.

Yeehaw

In May and June of 2007, a new wave "broke" over BetterMost from IMDb, thanks to the continued destructive behavior of trolls and the indifference of IMDb's moderators.  Chief among them was the True Oracle of Phoenix.  We commemorate their coming with the quote of one of his last posts on The Other Board:

What's up here today? I just had two good laughs at the . thread (first Marl, then your answer to my post - the ciggies smileys). Next thing I read is this and again, it has me literally LOL.

Forty years in BBM busines -->

Ok. For me, today was

- the day of many heartily laughs on the board
- and the day I revieved a reunion postcard.

Satuday night, press your best shirt,
Unknown man,
Get yourself down to
The Mint Bar,
Slick back your hair and take your place,
In history,
In the hearts and minds of millions,
In the noise and music of the evening,
Turn your gaze once again
To the pool table and remember,
You never know who may be watching.

Carefully you have lived your days,
Amongst those who you counted on,
To ignore, to overlook you, and allow you,
Your glances, your kindnesses,
Indulge you with a kind of acceptance,
That comes with a shut mouth,
And clandestine eyes.
It took a stranger, a woman no less,
To see what they didn't,
And read in your eyes the whole story,
Come rushing at her,
And six months to sort it out.

So it is Saturday night, Friend,
Stomp your boots full on and
Meet me down there, let me
Raise a glass with you,
Tell me, about the price of hay,
Tell me your aches and pains,
Your ten years older now.
And a celebrity.
If you want to,
I will tell you all about it.

In Loving Memory

Heath Ledger

...the cast and crew of this film, from the director down, had gotten into my mind and pulled out images.
Especially did I feel this about Heath Ledger, who knew better than I how Ennis felt and thought,
whose intimate depiction of that achingly needy ranch kid builds with frightening power.
It is an eerie sensation to see events you have imagined in the privacy of your mind
...loom up before you in an overwhelming visual experience.

You Rise Still

you slipped away
unobserved
like a silent whisper.
your spirit rises
like soft strands of smoke
from a quenched candle.
you rise far
from this chaos and loss
you rise still.

there is more
beyond this earthly vale
distant shores
where footprints remain
forever etched in sand.
you are there
where shadows are not
where your sun gleams
you are there
you rise still.

you slipped away
in the light of day
I pray you felt no fear
close to the end
for you rise still.
bits of your soul breathe
in these bereft hearts
you are here
even as you rise far
from this restless haze
you rise still.

Rest In Peace.

Tonight I am just so thankful to Heath.
For his capacity to touch so many people so significantly.
And, for giving us Ennis, and everything Ennis means, in such vivid and profound detail.
What a tremendous legacy.

The bonfire doesn't already warm
all the deep wrinkles in my soul.
My path is a hollow full with stones
that leads me to a Brokeback
whose landscape seems so uncouth.
Its bright sky draws a storm...
...since he's gone.

I hope you've found your Brokeback wherever you're now,Heath. Ride up to the stars, cowboy

There they shall be also.
Wherever there is one of you alone,
There they shall be as well.

Late in the afternoon, thunder growling, that same old green pickup rolled in (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h269/merylmarie/BBMLinesVisualized/BrokieBrunch/Brokeback/Jackreuniongrin.jpg) and he saw Jack get out of the truck, beat-up Resistol tilted back.  A hot jolt scalded Ennis and he was out on the landing (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h269/merylmarie/BBMLinesVisualized/BrokieBrunch/Brokeback/ReunionEnnisonlanding.jpg) pulling the door closed behind him.  Jack took the stairs two and two.

They seized each other by the shoulders, (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h269/merylmarie/BBMLinesVisualized/BrokieBrunch/Brokeback/Reunionhug.jpg) hugged mightily, squeezing the breath out of each other, saying, son of a bitch, son of a bitch, then, and easily as the right key turns the lock tumblers, their mouths came together, and hard, (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h269/merylmarie/BBMLinesVisualized/BrokieBrunch/Brokeback/Reunionhardkiss.jpg) Jack's big teeth  bringing blood, his hat falling to the floor, stubble rasping, wet saliva welling, and the door opening (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h269/merylmarie/BBMLinesVisualized/BrokieBrunch/Brokeback/ReunionAlmapeek.jpg) and Alma looking out for a few seconds at Ennis's straining shoulders and shutting the door again and still they clinched, pressing chest and groin and thigh and leg together, (http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h269/merylmarie/BBMLinesVisualized/BrokieBrunch/Brokeback/Reunionkiss2.jpg) treading on each other's toes until they pulled apart to breathe and Ennis, not big on endearments, said what he said to his horses and daughters, little darlin. I felt the need to repost this:

Originally posted Thursday, March 2, 2006 by Meryl:

In hopes of warding off an internecine conflict, I offer the following Creed for consideration, in which we honor Story, Screenplay and Movie equally, thus making all aspects included in these texts worthy of celebration.

THE BROKEBACK CREED

I believe in Annie, the Author Almighty,

Creator of Ennis and Jack,

And in Larry and Diana, her chosen Adaptors,

Who conceived of the Holy Screenplay,

Suffered under obtuse Producers,

Were criticized, flamed and turned down.

The seventh year they rose again to the task.

They ranched up with Focus Features

And sat at the feet of Ang, the Director Almighty,

Who proceeded to cast both Heath and Jake.

I believe in the Holy Story, the Holy Movie, too,

the Communing of Shirts, the Force of Nature,

The blessings of Brokeback Mountain,

And love everlasting.

I swear.

Buds, I went to Camp #2 on Sunday with Mr mouk who is wonderfully supportive of my brokiness. It was strange enough not going on my own, but then it got stranger as for the first time ever I found the area 'crowded': met a family doing cross country-skiing on the path going down, several walkers with their dogs and snow-shoers. J & A are no longer in the middle of nowhere  >:( But then, maybe they no longer need to hide?

The snow was thick, up to our knees in some places as we did not have snow shoes. It was unseasonably warm and the air was still. There were lots of human tracks, some wildlife tracks too (mainly hares) and the bridge is now completely gone. The Dozy embrace cairn is buried in the snow but the leaning trees are still up and doing fine.

I took advantage of a moment when nobody was around to lay the flowers where I always do, by the 2 small dead trees behind the tent. I think of these trees, battered and bruised by the wind but not giving up, as J&E. There is a nice little secluded mini slope just next to them that I use as our altar. I stayed there a long time as always, contemplating the view they had from the tent, listening to the river and sending all your prayers of thanks and other messages, ô High Priestess and dear Brokie Friends. I remembered the special times spent with many of you in here over the years since 2007. I am sure some of the spirit of these heart-felt visits lingers on.

By the end, they was a ray of sun and a tiny breeze.
Then I knew Heath was there and smiling on all of us.

Thank you so much, mouk, for doing this for us all!!!!   :-* :-*

The pictures are just wonderful! It feels a little strange to see the place covered in snow, but it looks so much more serene and peaceful that way. Very appropriate for the occasion.

It's wonderful that you actually live in the area (relatively speaking), and can keep an eye on the site like this.
You're our in situ Brokie!  :D

So sad about the bridge, though.  :'( :(

And kudos to Mr mouk for being so supportive!

I went through this whole thread today, after Sonja and Lee bumped the sister thread. So many treasures in here. I highly recommend re-reading after a long time.

But it gets hard from page 11 on.
The people we lost ... :'(

On a lighter note there's this:

I will never again be able to see someone making the sign of the cross without automatically tucking in my shirt. Luckily I'm not a catholic  ;).

Yee-Haw!

Seeing what I wrote six years ago is funny. Especially since earlier this year, I had some shirt-tucking moments. ;)
At the Soccer World Championship, I saw many players doing the sign of the cross before entering the field. And almost as often I caught myself thinking Tuck your shirt instead, brother.
After all those years.
 :)

I remember reading that Rollins Stone article about how Michelle Willliams had written "Oldman River" on his arm and he had it tattooed there permanently and they made some story out of it. Then we went to Alberta and leaving Ft. McLeod I saw a road sign to Oldman River and I was like "UnHuh!"

Because I could not stop for Death
He kindly stopped for me
The Carriage held but just Ourselves
And Immortality.

We slowly drove. He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility

We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess in the Ring
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain
We passed the Setting Sun

Or rather He passed us
The Dews drew quivering and chill
For only Gossamer, my Gown
My Tippet only Tulle

We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground
The Roof was scarcely visible
The Cornice in the Ground

Since then 'tis Centuries and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity

To live in this world

you must be able
to do three things:
to love what is mortal;
to hold it

against your bones knowing
your own life depends on it;
and, when the time comes to let it go,
to let it go.

Remembering Heath Ledger
Title: Re: The Brokeback Cult: The New Testament
Post by: Meryl on January 22, 2022, 03:32:27 pm
Ten years since Mouk made this eloquent and moving post. What better way to honor Heath's passing yet again and send up a prayer of thanks for Brokeback Mountain and all its blessings and gifts... :-*
