Title: Brokie Fever Relapse
Post by: Brown Eyes on July 13, 2009, 10:23:50 pm

Heya,
So, I'm here to report something that happened while I was away visiting my folks in Chicago for a long 4th of July weekend.  It was one of those visits completely defined by family activities.  And, I experienced something extremely close to the very early days of Brokie fever during most of the visit.  I found myself thinking about BBM or random BBM connections to almost every activity and every conversation.  Really, for a lot of the visit my thoughts were really distracted and of in BBM la-la land. It's really interesting because I haven't watched BBM for at least a few months now.  And, there was no particular trigger that I could discern.  It was actually kind of nice to experience that again for a little bit.

I still haven't watched BBM since I got back (I got back on Tuesday night).  So, in a way the feeling has waned again.

But, I'm curious to know if other old-timers have experienced this much?  And, by this I mean an intense little phase of Brokie fever... and not the low-grade appreciation for BBM incorporated into your current outlook in a more settled/ subtle way (which is how I tend to experience Brokie-ness most of the time these days as an old timer).

That's great, Amanda! I have not had a phase yet that takes me back to the way it was---but I certainly hope that I will experience that some day. It was a great and wonderful time that made me feel very deeply and even though it hurt in many ways--it made me feel so alive!

Good for you!  ;)

I still have periods where I am either BBM obsessed or Heath or both. There is not a day goes by when I do not play the wings, from BBM. Well actually that is not 100% true, I did not get to listen to it in hospital. There is not a time I hear it that I don't cry. In fact the kids know which  tracks I listen to on my BBM C.D.  1, 6, 9,12  and the very last track.
I think in my case, it is linked in with the depression that is blighting me at the moment. All my common sense tells me not to listen to or watch things that will accentuate the feeling, but my heart says, do what you want.
So some days I feel I am right back where I started with my BBM journey, other days, I feel I have made some progress. It seems to me, that my mood and BBM are intricately woven together.
Strangely, Michael Jackson's death, although terrible, affected me only indirectly. It reminded me of my own mess up, and the passing of Heath, which in turn led to a BBM viewing and several Kleenex. I started to go back to the BBM site here and re read some earlier posts.

Some things tend to bring back those intense feelings for me. Reading fan fiction often does it but sometimes it´s other things. Yesterday when I looked through Lee´s photos from their recent Wyoming trip, I felt chills down my spine (in the good way). Remembering Wyoming and Alberta ofta does it for me, or discussing the movie or story with another Brokie.

Hmmm. I'll say I have a low grade fever. ;) BBM seems to be always with me. I've been reading alot of fanfiction recently. Mostly fictions where Jack does not die and he convinces Ennis to pursue the sweet life with him. I find I can't watch the film, it's too heartbreaking. The fanfic's let me fantasize they had a life together. Lame I know, but I like to think there are multiple alternate fictional realities available for them and they can choose which they like best. I have found a surprising amount of wisdom in these fanfic's and much love. Jeez, that sounds so weird! Ok, I swear I have a life!!  ;D. I have friends! I read books other than BBM fanfics! I swear! Me thinks I doth protest too much! ::)

yeah. totally know where you're coming from.

It's weird how little thing just snap you right back to that. I'd be out jogging and a strong wind slams into me, and I would think of Jack. A light flicker from a cigarette lighter, and my mind sees Ennis as a speck of camp fire in the middle of the mountain. Every time things like that happen, I get a stab of emotion that's jumbles excitement and joy in with loneliness and grief. And a moment later, it's gone.

Hey there Friend!!! So awesome to see you online! :) 8)  How've you been?  Feels like 4 f'in years since we've crossed paths around here.

Yes, I still have interesting relapses of serious Brokie feelings from time to time.  And, almost everyday I still find myself thinking of some aspect of BBM in relation to a daily task or average experience.  Sometimes those moments of reflection are very fleeting, but it's still an amazingly consistent presence in my life.  It's kind of woven into lots of aspects of daily life.  But, the really intense Brokie Fever experiences that were pretty common a few years ago are more and more rare.  I realize that the last time I had a real bout of Brokie Fever was when I was at hme with family and dealing with coming out issues.  I'm sure there's a direct connection now that I've had more time to think about the experience in July.

Thanks for your interest Friend.  Well, it's a long story and would derail this thread I think, so I'll provide a link here to my blog.  I actually discussed this at fairly great length over there in my blog.  The section about this issue starts about here, when I was anticipating my trip to Chicago for a mini-family reunion: http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,16112.msg522966.html#msg522966 (http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,16112.msg522966.html#msg522966) And, it continues for a page or two after the trip happened, with lots of good support and ideas from lovely BetterMostians.

For this thread, I guess the point is that certain specific issues can bring out intense Brokie feelings... or an urge to "run back" to Brokie thoughts to cope. Coming out issues and moments seem like pretty clear triggers for me.

Hi Amanda. It's good to see friends still converging to share.

To be honest, the Fever doesn't hit me as often as it used to. The past couple of years, i'll go months without thinking about the boys now. That's why when something does remind me, the jolt of emotion can almost drop me to my knees. At the same time, these relapses also remind me that I am living a life that Ennis and Jack never had together. I've found my Jack and I've let him convinced me into starting up and running a little ranch together (okay a cafe, which recently won the title of Best Burger of Downtown LA, but that's another story).

yeah, I'm sure there is a direct connection between your last bout and dealing with coming out. That sense of fear and alienation is always there when coming out. Those emtions were ever present to Ennis.

Good to see you around Nipith.  :)

I think we're all going to be afflicted in some sort of way the rest of our lives.  We don't think about them as often as we used to, but every once in a while, like others say, a sudden rush or jolt of that old feelin', and then it's suddenly gone.... I don't think any of us will ever forget our experience and the feelings that came with it.

I have been having a whole lot of Brokie relapses lately and it makes me feel so silly. I have been re reading the story and screenplay, listening to the soundtrack, even learning to play the wings on the piano. What is even more odd, is I am back to hiding it again. I have been on youtube watching clips, all I can think is that I had a long email from Mr. X and it came completely out of the blue and coincided with a time when Nigel is being a real arse to me.
I guess I am doing a lot of what ifs. Which in turn reopens all the original BBM wounds, or at least that's my take on it.

Fiona, I don't think it ever goes away. Its always there in some form. I did this bit of silliness the other day. I was on a coupon site on the computer and ya have to put in yer name and email address. So I put in my name as Ennis Del Mar. My coupons printed out on each coupon "For the household of Ennis Del Mar". I know very silly but LOL I guess its just hardwired in me.

Not exactly a relapse, but there is a nice post on IMDB.com by someone who just recently viewed
BBM for the 1st time. I think he has a touch of the fever. It reminded me a little of how I was affected the 1st time. I sure do enjoy comments from those who have watched BBM with fresh eyes.

That was a very interesting read, retropian.
Seems he had a trace of homophobia, and that one single viewing of BBM changed his mind significantly!!

That is some powerful outcome of a movie.... it might not turn him into a full-blown supporter of gay rights, but probably no discussion or information campaign in the world could have had such an instant effect.

It makes you wonder what would happen if some more of the homophobes were to watch it..... only problem is that they never will..... if it wasn't for his girlfriend this guy wouldn't have seen it either.

What a fascinating read, it was even more powerful from a guy who is so very strongly heterosexual. I agree 100% with his contention that if it had been a man/woman love story it would not have had 1/100th the impact. All this time on and BBM still affects me more than any other film has and I suspect ever will.

Heya,
I'm here to report a sneak-attack of Brokie fever that I had yesterday.  I was having drinks with a friend and told her about the Brokie community (including the trips and gatherings that have happened in the past) and even had a small discussion with her about the endless discussions about the meaning of the film/ story.  She's the first non-Brokie I've ever talk to about the Brokie phenomenon.  There are plenty of non-Brokies who know that I like the movie BBM, but not about Brokieness.

I actually teared up a tiny bit while talking about some of it with her... I had thought I was well beyond the stage of tearing up.  But, it was interesting because it reminded me that Brokie fever really can relapse sometimes unexpectedly.

She has only seen the movie one time, and really liked it... but had never really considered some of the things that we've gotten into here in the endless discussions.  I gave her the example of the ambiguity about how Jack died... and it never occurred to her that the scene of the beating/murder was just part of Ennis's imagination and that we don't have evidence that that really happened.  It was fun because she instantly got more intrigued...

She's part of two big fan forums, so I knew that she would understand the forum community thing and the idea of making friends through fan forums.

It really was an interesting experience to have that conversation.

I've been having a bit of a relapse of Brokie fever, too.  It started with the Boston weekend in early June and the comments that sprang up over a couple of pictures I took of us watching the DVD in Paul's living room.  Our new member Brokebacklove4ever started another wave with his (or her) "Thank you" thread.  Our "bump a thread" campaign caused me to re-read some old IMDb offerings, then I re-read the New Cult thread.  I feel another viewing of the movie coming on.  :-*

Yeah, it was a really interesting experience to have that conversation, because my emotional response really was very visceral... the sort of unpredictable/ entirely emotional nature of Brokie fever.

Katherine and I also found ourselves having a small movie-analysis chat on facebook the other night too.  It was so much fun, and it had been quite a long time since I've had that kind of conversation (deep analysis with another Brokie)

I second that! It WAS fun. And it's been a long time since I've discussed opinions and theories about the movie/story -- about how Jack died, about Ennis and Jack, Lureen and Alma ... I felt a spark of that old 2006 enthusiasm for analysis.

I happened to be checking something on IMDb tonight and then -- inspired, I guess, by this thread -- I decided to log in and see what was happening on the old BBM board. Needless to say, it was pretty quiet compared to the old days, but not entirely. There'd been some fairly recent posts.

It was kind of sad, though. There were people there wanting to explore various aspects of the movie at a deeper level, but just kind of stumbling their way along, really on the surface, with posts like "What was the significance of the man Jack met at the benefit dinner?" and "Scene with Jack's parents *spoiler*" and "Ending -- did anyone else notice this?" They knew this movie was deeper than most. But they were so far from understanding just how deep, so far from noticing, oh, say, the significance of the road paving scene.

I felt really sorry for those people, deprived of the benefit of reading posts by the genius Brokieologists who helped me to understand just how awesome this movie really is. To all those of you here, as well as those from the past -- Clancy, Casey Cornelius, Diane, Starboardlight, and on and on ... -- whose insights helped guide me toward a deeper appreciation for this movie's (and story's) endless depths and complexities ... thanks!

Yeah, those early days soon after the movie had been released really were amazing with the number of people deeply into discussing every aspect of the film.

Well, tomorrow, I'm having a BBM viewing tomorrow night with as so-far non-Brokie.  She's seen the movie one time (long ago) and liked it, but clearly didn't become obsessed with it like we all did.  And, I let her borrow the Proulx story last week, which she's now read.  It's fun to see someone begin to discover the more complex aspects of the film bit by bit.  She's an English professor, so she's well positioned to be interested in Proulx's writing and to get into things like discussion of symbolism.  But, I don't want to be overbearing or overwhelm her with stuff like that.

In a way, some of it needs to be discovered independently I think.

But, yeah, there are so many complicated things (the Classical references, the Asian references...).  I feel like I need to brush up on some of those old discussions.  It's been long enough now, that I'm beginning to forget some of the nuances of those discussions.

The way I experienced something like a relapse this year was actually seeing a different film, Undertow.   Although not 'like' Brokeback Mountain it certainly appeals to some of the same feelings.  We had a thread going for a while, but no one new has jumped on for quite a while and I am feeling a certain sadness that other people I think would really be moved by it, will probably never get around to seeing it.  Or even if they do see it, it may not make the full impression because of the necessary distraction of the subtitles, and the fact that the script and director makes most points only once.  Though I was impressed the first time, it was really the second time, at Paul's house, when certain things started to vibrate.  Then the third time I finally started to notice the kinds of things Casey Cornelius put into his deservedly classic posts about Brokeback Mountain.

This is the languishing Bettermost thread:

http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,46298.0.html (http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,46298.0.html)

One thing about the is that the wife's role (the character Mariela) is somewhat more sympathetic than Alma's - she does not get to the point of remarrying and hardening off.  And it is wonderfully acted.  On the Gay Cinema topic on the DC forum there is a real enthusiast for Undertow, JuliaCat, and she said she actually had corresponded with the actress, Tatiana Astengo.  We had a little flurry around Undertow over there a few weeks back and some other people saw it and said they were really moved by it.

She has to be interested enough to want to get into it. But I don't think I'd ever have gotten much below the surface without the help of Brokies here and at IMDb. You have to know it's there, to be assured that there's almost nothing in the movie that can't be read in different ways and at different levels.

Had an amazing evening watching BBM again tonight with a non-Brokie. :)  She started picking up on interesting themes on her own (i.e. wondering about the black and white hats, the viewing position of Aguirre looking through the binoculars relative to our viewing positions as spectators of the movie... and I even brought up the classical references/ Aeneid-Dido discussion relevant to the end of BBM, and she got it.

Totally amazing.  I doubt that she's been converted to being a full-on Brokie... but I think she was very intrigued.

And, I'm happy to say that I cried a bit this time... it hit me this time in the final trailer scene.  Often/ most typically in the past it has been the flashback scene for me that starts the waterworks.

Two days ago, I was watching The Bridges of Madison County (love the movie, have seen it few times already), and when Clint Eastwood's character tells Meryl Streep's that "this kind of certainty only comes once in a lifetime" [referring to their attraction/love], I couldn't help but think of the boys.  And couldn't help finding all these connections between the two stories...

I still get hit with Brokie fever more often that I thought I would 5 and a half years after first watching the film.
I don't know what it is; whether it is the changing of the seasons or certain events in my life that trigger it... but it is still there.  :)

The odd thing is this week I was pulled back into the Brokieverse by questions from a Twenty something guy who is a friend of Dusty's. He had questions about the film "I Love You Phillip Morris" which somehow segued into a discussion of Brokeback Mtn. I ended up giving him one of my copies of the film Brokeback Mtn, and wished him a happy journey.  :)

Yeah, Brokie-ness seems to be a permanent personality trait.  The amount of time that has passed is certainly interesting.  And, it's interesting to realize how Brokie-ness becomes woven into daily consciousness in a somewhat subtle way (at least for me) in almost all things.

The big wallops of Brokie-Fever relapse seem to strike from out of the blue... somewhat occasionally these days.  But, I welcome remembering those strong emotions.
And, I realize now, that I have Brokie-nostalgia as much as memories of the high-pitch of the main throes of Brokie fever from them early days.

I miss the compulsive urge to talk about BBM all the time (that was so real and undeniable in the first months and even years of being a Brokie).  You can't force those things though.  They just happen.  And, honestly, it's probably healthy that those phases are somewhat short-lived.

It's great to see folks dropping in again!  :-*

Great story!

I think that you are right! in fact the enduring power of the film, the ss, the commentaries, and the brokieblogosphere is amazing!

I think that is time for a re-release of the film with a director's, screenwriter's and actor's commentary embedded.

Just watched the movie again. For the first time in years I watched it alone, all by myself.
Can someone tell me why I'm putting myself through the wringer like this? Rhetoric question of course.

Oh my goodness, what a lovely surprise to see you posting here.  I have been wondering if you ever came in anymore?  I love seeing you again.  I hope your life is going wonderfully and you are happy and well.  Janice

It's interesting looking back to the beginning of the thread. And that was in 2009, more than three years after the opening of BetterMost and beginning of Brokieism.

I've had awesome experiences thanks to Brokiedom.

Thanks, Lee. Seeing all those old familiar usernames brings it all back. Those old, cold days on the Mountain are never to be forgotten: the Alberta Pilgrimage, meeting up in Denver after my Southwest Trip with Mikaela, our New York meetups, the Tucson gathering, all were so special. I hope we have more to come, even this far out from 2006 and the beginning of BetterMost.

Love you all, dear Brokies!  :) ;) ;D :D 8) :-* O0

I don't think I've ever seen anything that has caused a relapse.   This Christmas the Paramount network aired "Dashing in December", a gay Christmas movie, and it featured gay cowboys, one was named Heath.

I didn't cause a relapse, while I did enjoy the movie, it would never compare to Brokeback.  However, it did make me think of BBM a few times.
