Ok guys, you asked for it (well, one of you did anyway ;) ). I must be going insane because I've decided to not only write a little fan fic, but to post it over here where anyone can read it :-\
Anyway, here it is, it's an AU and it picks up after Ennis turns Jack away when he drives up after the divorce. So far it's very Jack heavy and it will most likely stay in mainly Jack's point of view. It's only two chapters so far and I've planned nothing, so I'm not sure how long it will be. I read it just now, and I liked it, wondering where this will go (good thing!) and if I really want Bobby to be exposed to tirant John Twist, maybe that's a good reason for Ennis to offer them a place to stay?

Ok, I know I told some that I'd be updating tonight... I'm really sorry that I haven't yet, things got crazy at work the last week or so... I hope to update by sunday, monday at the absolute latest!

Hi Mandy! You're getting better with every chapter! This is great! I love your style of writing and your dialogue is excellent! I feel so sorry for Jack, he seems so sad! I hope he will become more responsible towards his little boy, though! Maybe once Ennis makes up his mind?

I think after this chapter I decided that that's one of the things I'm going to try and take on with this fic, Jack learning how to be a good father. In my mind, though Bobby practically worships Jack, Jack has most likely been absent for much of the kid's life and now he's being forced to take an interest and he's finding it both amazing and incredibly frustrating and he's realzing how little he knows. And really, he's got his own problems to contend with before he can become a good father to Bobby... just a few thoughts. This last chapter didn't go in the direction I had planned and it gave me a lot to work with :)

I have five books on my nightstand, and they've been lying there for three months. I AM reading Bill Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything", which is a great recommendation for the era that will be known as post-BBM fanfiction. If there will ever be such a thing.

I cannot wait to see what happens when Ennis gets to Lightening Flat. Mean Mr Twist isn't going to like that much especially if Bobby slips up and says something about what he heard and knows about his Daddy and Ennis's relationship.

And the lying down next to him and refusing to leave and the gentle, loving tenderness in the bathroom was breathtaking, incredibly moving.
I do so wonder what will happen next. How will old man Twist react to Ennis being there? Are they staying? If not, where will they go??
I'm SO proud of Ennis and SO happy he's in Lightning Flat! :)

Thanks, June! I'm really glad you liked it so much. Jack very much needed Ennis at that moment and Ennis delivered. It almost turned out very very different... but I won't tell you how, I'll just leave it at what I wrote ;)
I think "proud" is the perfect word, it was hard for Ennis to do what he did, especially given old man twist is ratteling around that ranch somewhere...

Thanks for posting! I love how he looks in the production stills for Zodiac, he looks so 'guy next door' cute in those, but I do also like his looks in the pictures on the Shades thread... :)
I loved this chapter, very unexpected tenderness from Ennis, and again your dialogue was very good. I loved this:
Ennis pulled away slowly, his eyes still closed. “How much you drink?”
Jack sighed. It turned to a hiccup in his throat and he smiled wide, giggling. “A lot. A whole fuckin’ lot.”
Ennis’ face turned hard again and he opened his eyes. “Can see that, Jack.”
The dialogue is very natural and I hope you will follow up on that promise about John F*****' Twist! I also hope that Jack finds a way to stand up for not only his son, but also for himself, and not back down when his father beats down on him. That son of a *****. Ooops... sorry, getting carried away.... ;)

When the dialogue and the non-verbal communication that comes with that are good and creatively written, then the story does really come to life, that is what I was always being taught in university during creative writing and screenwriting classes and it's what I always concentrate on too when I write short stories. :) In this case, I could really see that happening right in front of my eyes: Jack sighed. It turned to a hiccup in his throat and he smiled wide, giggling. “A lot. A whole fuckin’ lot.” It's sad and hilarious at the same time, well done!
And yes, I was thinking that having Ennis by his side will give Jack more courage to finally stand up to his father (but he's not going to let Ennis do it for him I think...) and give him one hell of a verbal beating. Wow, tough dialogue on the way for you to write! :-) Bet you will do fine, though!

more angst after two chapters of pleasure...you're killin me littleguitar! I sure do hope things end up happy for your boys otherwise why read fan fiction? Sorry, not to insult anyone, just how I feel. If I'm going to read FF it's to get more of the back story or to have a better outcome...know what I mean? I really want to start posting on a regular schedule every Mon/Thurs because I'd like to finish this one up and start another...

Jack has been weak up to this point, and honestly I'm having a hard time pulling him out of that... it's one of the reasons this last chapter took me longer to post. The problem is, when I started this story, I went into it with the idea that Jack had been very strong up to this point but that when Ennis turned him away it finally broke something in him. I don't view him as weak after that in the film, just more hardned and embittered but when I started my story I made the decision to give him a drinking problem which is causing me (and him...) problems for a few reasons.
I think in the film he had a drinking problem but it was probably a little better hidden then in my story, Ennis finding him the way he did in my story kind of brought the problem to the surface for both of them. And though having Ennis with him makes things much easier for him and makes him happier than he was, he's still having a lot of trust issues with Ennis after 14 years of being shot down by him. Also, I don't think Ennis is just some magic solution to all of his problems that Jack can stop drinking the second he walks back into his life no matter how much happier Ennis makes him because I think Jack's problems run deeper than that. Also, the real time of my story has only been about a week or so it's going to take Jack and Ennis longer than that to come to terms with things. As for drinking in front of Bobby.... there's no excuse. It's not a good thing to be doing and Jack knows it and is trying to justify it to himself right now by having done it while Bobby was asleep. That's why he reacted the way he did when Ennis told him he shouldn't be doing that.
Sorry about all of the rambling, I'm trying to work some things out in this story right now that I've been having trouble with and Jack's weakness has been one of my major problems :-\ I want him to be stronger too and I'm trying to work out a way for that to happen. See, this isn't how I usually write, usually I see something through to the end then go back and revise the shit out of it once I've figured out what's going on. But that isn't the nature of fan fiction so this has been a very very different writing experience for me.

I'm glad you like what I've done with Jack, I've been having some problems writing this one lately and your post put my mind at ease a bit :) That's one of the problems I've had with some of the fics too is that Jack seems to be incredibly well adjusted despite the fact that he's had a very hard life and a lot of times all it takes is Ennis' confession of love for him to be well off... I just don't think that could be possible for him. I think he has a lot more problems outside of his relationship with Ennis that have nothing to do with Ennis at all but that are maybe part of the reason he sticks with Ennis through everything.

So true, sometimes characters take on a life of their own and you have absolutely no control over what they do. I think some of the best stories can come from this but it is incredibly frustrating to be the writer when that's happening! :-\

That 2 week self imposed deadline is looming :-\ any headway on wrappin up this one Mandy? I feel kinda bad for Ennis, Jack and Bobby kinda hangin like they are caught between commitment and a sense of betrayal with the potential threat from Old Man Twist still doggin them. I went back last night and read all 15 Chapters from beginning to end, you've touched my heart with your characterizations and I really would like to know how this one turns out...happy I hope, but I'll still go where ever you lead me. :'(

No worries, I'm not letting this one go, I just had a bit of a setback. I'm halfway through writing the next chapter and though I told Ruby I would have it posted tonight it's looking like tomorrow or wednesday. I'm going to work on it some more tonight, though! A lot of things should be cleared up in this chaper between the boys and I'm thinking there will only be one or two more after it and an epilogue.

Ennis gestured with his chin out the windshield and Jack turned to look. Three pick-ups lined up in a row, bumper to bumper across the road, blocking the way. Men, probably five by Jack’s count, milled about, looking lively at the sight of the truck making its way toward them. Not one of them had a gun, a few baseball bats, some wrenches, a tire iron. Jack saw his dad off to the side, leaning against the front bumper, his face stern.
“Fuck,” Jack said. “Turn around Ennis.”
“Can’t,” Ennis said.
Jack turned and saw that more trucks had blocked their way out. Fear raced through his body, thumping in his chest and his temples, making him dizzy. Ennis gripped the steering wheel so tight his knuckles were white.
“Fuck,” Jack said again.
Bobby woke. “What’s goin’ on, Daddy?”
“Nothin’, Bobby,” Jack said. He looked at Ennis, his face full of “what now”, Ennis’ face full of something. But what Jack wasn’t sure. He knew Ennis’ mind had probably only registered one thing, that one tire iron out of the whole group of men and weapons. That tire iron had finally come for him. “It’ll be all right,” he said.
Ennis nodded.

The last chapter! :'( I loved how you ended it with the shirts... Your dialogue is great and it was good to read that Jack was able to comfort Ennis now by holding him. How is Jack ever gonna get the divorce papers? Oh I forgot, this is the last chapter! ;)
I wish that Jack would've stayed in Bobby's bed though. I think Bobby was acting tough when he said that and still needed his daddy with him. And sex right next to the little boy? Ouch! I don't know about that! :o
It was a great story, I think I need to read it again from start to finish!

I kind of wished that too! I think it would have been really good for Bobby to snuggle up against his father :) Heh and the sex, well I guess they really needed each other at that moment but I think I would have gone into the shower or something! ;D

I was wondering if anyone would say anything about that sex scene... I knew it would make a few people shudder. I'm with you, I don't think that it was the best move to make and yeah I think Bobby probably did need his dad at that point, even if he was the one to say something. I really don't have any explaination other than I think there was just so much tension after everything that happened that neither one of them could resist... they weren't thinking. I actually wrote a shower sex scene but it felt wrong... I don't know, I just kept thinking Bobby would wonder what they were getting up to in the shower together so I might as well go with my initial instinct and have them just wait till he's asleep.
(also, I find quiet sex incredibly erotic ::) ) :P

Aww Mandy ~ in NO way was this last chapter a let down! Absolutely not! It was beautiful :) And the sex scene didn't make me shudder at all! :) And yeah, I definitely agree about the quiet sex :P I thought Ennis's hand over Jack's mouth was incredibly erotic ::)

I'm a regular reader, but a late responder - I didn't think it was a let down at all!
