Title: Chat Room Poll
Post by: Phillip Dampier on February 16, 2006, 12:42:14 am
Someone offered that a chat room feature might make BetterMost a more useful place for people.  There are a few add-on packages that are available that integrate reasonably with this forum software, but before I spend time on it, I'd like to learn if it's a feature useful for users.

I am looking into chat software for the forum.  There are about three packages and they seem to rely on some form of IRC chat.  I'll have John look into the technical matters with it and see about implementing it if it's not too complex.

Yes, especially lately.  But I am being b*tched at because I've let housecleaning duties suffer because I am sitting at the computer writing.  I've also more or less stopped watching television, except for Bill Maher on HBO and a few other shows here and there.

Still just a newbie... but I love the give and take of chat.

But...I must say the current format forces me to be a little more deliberate in my thought and expression, especially with complex topics.  So it's not such a bad thing...

So, consider my yes vote a qualified one.

Great chat yesterday...there were 13 people at one point when I was online. Once we got everyone assigned a colour, it was fairly easy to keep track of the intertwining dialogues. I especially enjoy chatting with newcomers to the board. Try it if you have an extra 15 minutes or so (altho I can easly use up several hours chatting w/o noticing how much time is going by!) Jump in, the water's fine! Just click on the chat button on your toolbar up top.

Yeah - it was a great time.  Pup tent got too crowded after a while, people poking each other with elbows (I think it was elbows), stepping on toes, etc., so we went out to the campfire.  It was just great!  It's easy to invite other users who are on-line to join you in the chat room, and a great way to get to know each other better.

Hi Katie. Just click on the chat icon above (with the lips) and you're in! A box on the right hand side of the screen will tell you if there's anyone else there.

i voted other because these days there's never anyone in the chat room to chat with!  I used to use it a lot about a year ago.  :)

Back in the day I lived in the chat room-it was a fun, happy, jacknasty place. Slowly my chat buds disappeared so I did as well. I miss chat.

I voted:

1. I tried it only once

and

2. I don't because I'm afraid of being attacked

I'm not exactly afraid of being attacked, as such. "Wary" might be a more appropriate word. The one and only time I entered the Chat Room, there was someone in there who was clearly and demonstrably not overjoyed by my presence, so I soon hightailed it outa there, never to return.

Once burned!

There's also a matter of the time difference for me, who lives in Australia.

What Roux said.  Plus some bad experiences.

What Dev and Roux said.  I would love chat to be an active happy place again.  I almost never think to go in there now, though I used to.

I did use the chat room frequently earlier in the year, but there was some unfriendliness, not only in my conversations, and there was a bit of discomfort when some people wanted to go into another room to get away from someone who was in the main room. It was becoming a little "clicky".

I assume all of that sorted itself out, and I often look in to see if there is anyone in there, but usually there is not. I was not sure if that was because of the time difference as I live in Australia or whether it was just not getting used anymore.

I think its a great idea if used properly, but, unfortunately,  it seems to cause a bit of conflict which can make some people unhappy.

getting ready to go back to work  :(

Katie I moderate in chat and there is a feature whereby you can click on a users name and ignore that user if they are causing trouble and upsetting people. Do they not have such a feature here? Also certain users like myself, have the ability to eject a user who is causing trouble. Is that something that happens here?
I saw Philip mention IRC chat. I,m not a great lover of that. I used to use an IRC chat room at one time, and if you right clicked on another users name, you could see their IP information.  Where I moderate, only staff can see that.
So you need two things, an ignore feature and users who can moderate the chat rooms. You also need a contact button so that users can report any abuse.

well you also need clear rules on what consistutes abuse...around here it seems to be subjective. two members can post the exact same post, using the same words and one will be judged abuse, the other as perfectly acceptable....depends on who you are and which table you sat at in high school (apparently)

People forget that no matter what table you get to sit at, you are the same person.  If you didn't get to sit at the popular girls table, bullying people now wont fix it...high school was a LONG time ago...time to let it go.

I hear ya kiddo. I know what you mean.  ;)
Where I moderate there are very clear rules on what consitutes abuse, and the rules are the same for everyone. If you wanna chat you chat nicely, if you wanna be an abusive gonk you get kicked out, end of story. NO abuse is tolerated.
Being staff, I have a very handy little function. In short it allows me to "gag" a user. They carry on typing into the room, or they think they do, but the software deletes it. So while they think they are still hurling abuse, they arn,t because no one can see it. I,ve left people sitting there like that for ages and they have no idea. The game soon gets boring because no one is paying attention and they soon leave. I love my toys.  ;) ;D

Being able to chat back and forth is a great idea, whether it be here or on Yahoo or some other Instant Message site.

It gives us the chance to carry on a continual conversation in real time as if we were sitting facing one another for real.

As in any conversation, if there are a group of people talking at the same time, there is usually some time when someone might say something one does not agree with, and then maybe someone else might not agree, but someone else might, and it can cause a bit of upset or hurt feelings with people with different opinions. It doesnt necessarily cause abusive conversation, but sometimes it can upset someone, or hurt someones feelings.....its a fact of life whether its talking in a group in real life or talking in a group on a chat site......I dont think anything really can be done about that, and most people can get over it, and come back the next day without any ill feelings.

Something else I have found from talking on the net to people is that it can be difficult to show the emotion or the humour of what is actually being said. If we say it in real life the listener can see our expression and know that we are only joking or being silly, but when the written words are all that can be seen, without any expression, they can sometimes be taken the wrong way, and not as they were intended by the writer.

I have also noticed a slight language barrier as well when I talk to people from different countries, where, words or phrases we might use in Australia might actually be rude or taken the wrong way by people in America, so that too, can add to a bit of confusion.

I am speaking not only of Bettrmost chat, but generally on all chat I have been involved in on other sites as well.

The people of Bettermost are a good bunch of people, caring and understanding, and we all seem to share a common bond with each other. I really dont think anyone would intentionally want to hurt anyones feelings, and it would be hoped that any misunderstood conversations would not cause people to take it too much to heart or destroy any friendships.

With this marvelous ability to be able to chat together, available to us, I hope that the chat room will once again be a popular place to visit by everyone.

With 650 views, one would think there would be more votes in this poll!

If you don't say much, you don't get your point across!
