Title: Now Playing at the Ennessean
Post by: Shakesthecoffecan on June 21, 2010, 07:00:37 pm
Recently I have been enjoying a great number of gay and lesbian themed short films on youtube. There seems to be more and more everyday. A few I have posted in my blog, but I thought I would start a new thread just for the purpose of showcasing these marvelous little gems. Also a good place to show trailers for up coming gay and lesbian themed films. I will try to keep the balance betwixt boys and girls, and feel free to post your likes as well.

Most of the films are under 10 minutes and in two parts, occasionally a bit longer. Most will probably be in some form of English, but many will be in other languages. Some are quite charming, some are downright disturbing. Remember, no one is making you watch.

The name I get from Jake Gyllenhaal's first big movie, October Sky. In it he plays Homer Hickum, Jr., aspiring 1950's rocket boy. Off for a science competition in an Ohio city (one of those that start with C, and there are too many of them) he goes out to the movies.

Now in reality October Sky was filmed just outside of Knoxville, Tennessee, and I think probably the vintage venue was really named the Tennessean, but that would not work in Ohio, so the lettering had to be changed. When I watched the movie for the second time in the height of my Brokeback Mountain grief, I was like "WTF?!"

Please turn off all cell phones.....

I really, really like short films! :D Thanks for starting this thread, Tru :-*.

I watched them all but the Ava one yet (will do so later).

Yep, it's German. But I also couldn't figure out why Mars. I guess just for the heck of it? ? ?
I have a thing for tough girls. Liked that one.

Jeez! They couldn't make the subtitles any more tiny, could they? I needed to watch this one three times to get all of it (and dredge up all my rusty French).
Sweet movie anyway.

A Good Son

Ack! - dang it, eh? Let's hope he gets a grip before he lives in trailer #17.

I'm trying to figure out from what year this one might be. The quality is so poor, it really looks and sounds like eighties. And the one guy was having a walkman and listening to Velvet Underground. My memory completely fails on dates about VU.
But nobody was online in the eighties. I think the antagonisms are on purpose.

Thank kew! I appreciate you stopping by.

That is too bad that one video won't play in your country, I guess it has something to do with some song in the sound track.

I just caught up with Alkali, Iowa, Transit, No Ordinary Joe and Turning Point.

Of those four, Alkali,Iowa was my fav.

Quote
"Do we have to work on the 4th, this sucks...."

Yeah, but there is more that sucks in this short movie (for the protagonists, I mean, not for the audience).
Turning Point had an "oops" moment towards the end, and I didn't find the ending of Transit to be so "you can make anything of it" like you did. I thought it was pretty clear. But maybe I have simply less fantasy than you have ;).

I like sitting down for an hour or so and watch three or four short films in a row. Thanks as always, Tru :).

I watched the movie The Art of Being Straight last night and have too say it is rather pointless and somewhat depressing. I think the main problem is it is EXACTLY like a scene out of real life, the whole thing could have happened for real, and therefor it lacks some of that magic we look to movies for.

Rock Haven

I watched this last night, and really it was not that bad for a low budget independent film. The Christian vs. Gay is starting to become a bit of a cliche I feel.

"Here is the touching scene from the Oscar-winning Wings (1927) featuring one of the first, if not the earliest surviving, on-screen same-sex kisses in film history. I've set this scene to the track The Gift of Mortality from the soundtrack to Bicentennial Man by James Horner. Enjoy!"

OMG I saw this movie last night, and brother let me tell you, the world needs to see this gem.

I cannot understand how it slipped in under the radar. I read some reviews about it that were not favorable as to the acting. I don't know what those people were smoking. I thought the acting and the story was just brilliant.

Not to give anything away you can't already surmise from the trailer, it is a story of a group of men, one in particular, who later on in life have to deal with a gay bashing they perpetrated on a friend of theirs. The story slowly unfolds from minimal flash backs and there is more emphasis on how they have turned out, each of them dealing with their remorse while their lives are impacted in ways they can explain to no one else.

The ending, is just too heartbreaking for words. I think this story will be with me for a long time.  :'(

And if you like jazz, you'll love the sound track. The producer says in the commentary that the soundtrack "informs the story" and I wondered if that term had ever been used to describe Brokeback, which it certainly does.

But apparently, it was never released outside of the US. :-\

So, I watched "Handsome Harry" tonight.

Surely I'm jaded from Brokeback, because it didn't touch me deeply.  Although I appreciated the performances, especially from Aidan Quinn, and Campbell Scott is a wonder--of course he read our story on CD--it just didn't do it for me.

Maybe because the flashbacks were very sparse, I didn't get a sense of the earlier connection until the end.

Jamey Sheridan may be handsome, but his acting is a little flat, to me.

Funny, I thought "Handsome Harry" was a dumb title.  Then again, back in 2005, I thought "Brokeback Mountain" was a dumb title also!
