Yes, Milli......me and my husband are big fans of the L Word.....we have had only one season shown here so far on cable.......but my husband has enquired about getting dvd's of some of the other seasons.....not sure yet what is available to us here in Austrlia.

Its been a while since that season finished here, so I forget a lot of the characters names.....our favourites were the one played by the girl out of Flashdance, and the other favourite is the young dark haired butchy one, she acts tough on the outside but we saw a soft side of her near the end.

I looked up the website for the show, and noticed they had different lots of casts for different seasons.  Does the whole cast change from season to season, or is it just that some go and some join?

Will be keen get any info you might have on the show.

Hey Sue .. Great to see you here!  :D

The L-word is currently in its 4th season but the 3rd season premieres Thursday here on one of the local channels.
I believe you can get the L-word on DVD from Amazon!  I will be getting seasons 1 and 2 as soon as I can!

I love the show because I love the women's stories and the way they are told.  Some people have said that the L-word is sorta like QAF (Queer as Folk) for women ..  but I think I enjoy LW more than QAF (although that is a great show too!).  As all the woman struggle to find love in their different, sometimes complicated lives, I can't help but get drawn into their dramas.   :)

And I agree with what you said about Shane.  She does everything she can to show a tough, "I don't give a F" attitude, but she is definitely concealing a soft side (one she possibly considers a weakness, what with the way she grew up and all..).  :)

The main characters are the same from season to season, but some come and go.  For example, Jenny's boyfriend TIM and the woman Jenny fell in love with in season 1: MARINA .. did not return for season two.

All in all .. this show rocks!

Aren't these women gorgeous?!  ;)

I am blown away by the way Pam Grier (KIT) looks ..  the woman is 57 years old!  She looks 35!!  :o 8)

Thanks Milli, for the cast photos.....I havent seen the show Queer as Folk, but I have heard that it is good.....when I describe the L Word to anyone...I usually say it is like Sex and the City, only with Lesbians......do you see the similarity?

I have often wondered if the actresses in the show are actually Lesbians, do you know if any of them are?

I agree with you about Kit, hard to imagine she is 57...what a looker.

Do you know any site where there is more info on the actresses...I guess if I looked them up on the net I would find out more.

Yes we are waiting for series 2 to commence here...havent seen any promos yet about when that is happening.

Hey Sue ..

I suppose a great place to start to get info on the actresses is on the show's website, which gives a brief bio on each cast member.  :)  I checked out 1 or 2 fan sites online too ..one I liked was l-word.com

Check it out if you get a chance.  :)

Hey Lucise!
I really enjoy the L-word too! It only aired on a private channel which I don't have, in France, so I bought the dvds for the first and second season from amazon (in English too), and really got hooked! I love Shane and Alice in particular. Jenny mesmerised me at first, but then I began to find her way too serious and deep... and messed up. Even if I can really sympathize with what she goes through in fact, at first at least.
I had no idea there would be more seasons... that's good news!

Hey Isabelle!

Great to see ya here!  :D
But .. why are ya a Tourist now?  ???
Anyway .. I'm thrilled you stopped by!

Yeah, there are 4 seasons in total right now.
I am going to be getting TLW on DVD soon too.  It costs a pretty penny, but it is worth it if you love the show.

Shane
is a very interesting character, she tries so hard to keep people away from her.  She certainly has a reputation of "lovin 'em and leavin 'em" .. but at the end of Season 2, she seems to come around more..so we'll see!

Jenny is really messed up as you say!  She freaks me out sometimes with her self-destructive tendencies .. after Marina left, she seems to be really struggling to find herself .. and accept her sexuality.

Dana is so Ennis-like to me .. she was so freaked out about people finding out that she was gay .. and made some very interesting decisions along the way ..

Alice is cool.  I like her ..

Bette and Tina..I hope those two work it out.  They seemed to be really in love, until Bette's job started interfering more and more ..

Helena .. quite bitchy and knows when to inflict her power on others ..lol

Kit is cool too!  Pam Grier rocks!

Geez ..I am rambling! lol

Cant wait for tonight .. ;)

Okay ..lol..

Season 3, Episode 1 spoilers ....

Thanks Milli, for the scenes here.....for the first time my husband looked at something here on the board and was interested........

whose babies are they?...looks like a boy and a girl....or why the adoption agency?

Who is that in the wheel chair?

Tell me more about these scenes....

Remember I have only seen series 1.......

1)  There is only one baby, Bette and Tina's lil girl called Angelica.  She is the one you see in the picture there ..with Dana.

2)  The lady in the wheel chair is a rather bitchy Adoption social worker who came over to visit Bette and Tina's home to see if Bette 'qualifies' to be Angelica's other parent.  Standard procedure, since Tina was the one who gave birth to the baby.. the visit dint go so well, so we'll see how B & T do in the second and last visit with this adoption worker.

3)  Carmen persuaded Shane to come with her to visit her Mexican family.  Thing is, Shane has to act 'straight' .. since Carmen is definitely not 'out' to her family yet.  Well, for the moment, Carmen's mom takes a liking to Shane and even offers to give Shane a dress to wear for one of their family occasions she would love Shane to attend.  Needless to say SHane was squirming in that white dress! lol  We'll see how long the deception lasts ..lol

4)  Alice .. I am worried about her.  She is obsessed with Dana, who is currently in what appears to be a loving relationship with Lara.  Alice has taken to swallowing pills and practically stalking Dana ..  I hope the rest of the gang finds out and ..well, 'straighten' her out a bit .. ;)
And then Helena visits a tarot card reader who tells her about the next 'love of her life' and after everything the psychic said, it is starting to look like Alice is the person who 'fits the description' ..lol, we'll see what gives ..

5)  Jenny was at her parents' home and finally got kicked out when her parents find her having sex in her room with a girl.  Her mother seems to think that a good Jewish boy can 'cure' her from her 'illness' .. Jenny tries to explain to her mom that her sexual orientation will not change, to no avail ..

Sue .. if you want to read the synopsis of the different shows from all the seasons, you can still visit the show's website and click on the link for any of the seasons!  :)

Whats the go with Shane and Carmen?.....I get the feeling you dont want Shane to go after her......

Hey Sue ..

I love Shane and Carmen together, I was really glad to see Shane in what seemed like a stable relationship with Carmen.  Then this Cherie woman arrives and Shane is instantly attracted to her again, now everything is shaky again.  It is Cherie I have a problem with, not Carmen .. ;)
I'll find out in 2 days if Shane will tell Carmen about her little escapade with Cherie .. I think she will... but then what will happen?  We'll see!

Oh dear.....I see what's happened.....trouble in "L Word" land eh?

Now waiting anxiously to see what happens next....

JUNE!!  Welcome!  Great to see you here!  ;D :D

You have asked so many questions, I dont even know where to start!  ;D
First, here is the website for the show:  www.thelwordonline.com
There are all kinds of info on there!  But here are some spoliers and answers to your questions:

* When Tina was pregnant, she was dating Helena, but that is over.. after the baby was born, she and Bette decided to give it a try for the baby's sake!  Things are rocky for them right now though.

* Jenny was crazy over Marina, but that didnt last!  She and Tim got a divorce!  She went through a rough time in season two, struggling with many issues .. but now, she is dating Moira aka Max, who has started taking hormone pills to become more man.. I don't know, we'll see what's going on there.

* Shane really calmed down when Carmen came into her life.  She was actually monogamous for a good while *gasp*, until Cherie came back again few episodes ago, that is.  Carmen is great!  Love her!  I think they make a stunning pair.

Gosh, I could go on forever ..lol.. definitely check out the website. ;)

Lee!  Hey!  :D

Moira is definitely not in season one.
For more Moira, definitely check out Season three.  I don't know if she is in season 4 or not.
The channel that plays the show here is only doing season 3 right now, although the show is in its 4th season.

While we are on the subject of Moira .. I don't know .. I am drawn to that character .. she has so many issues, she is sick of people calling her names, she gets strange looks from men/women, she gets harassed when she enters the ladies' room at pubs ..
She is now taking hormone pills without prescription to become more male .. I am worried about her.  But i love her!

Moira is played by Daniela Sea ( who, I might add, is a gorgeous woman..)

I am still unsure of what to do about posting pix here!  I just can't do it from home because it craps out on me when it tries to load all the pictures on the thread! Hmm.

Yesterday's episode, which I watched twice btw, was just awesome..

- Dana continues to struggle with her cancer.  She started losing her hair from the chemo.  She got Shane to shave her head.  It was great to see all her friends rally around her and support her!
- Max, formerly known as Moira is really getting into the transgender process.  She is starting to have alittle bit of facial hair from all testosterone injections and she is looking at doing surgery next.  She looks like a really really handsome dude now ..  ;D  She was thrilled to be able to use the men's room without people staring at her.   :)
- Shane and Carmen go through a little rough patch after Carmen gets a wierd dream about Shane giving Cherie the same tattoo they both got, and Shane growing wings and flying off with a bird ..lol.. Wierd dream, but she seems to be still hurt by Shane's latest indiscretions with Cherie.
- Helena takes the girls to a surprise trip to honor Dana in her recovery ..
- Bette and Tina .. more problems.  Bette asks Tina to sleep in the guest room.
- Kit gets to record an album with some old friends!  Angus tells her he wants to spend the rest of his life with her!  She thinks he is too young and doesnt know what he wants.

Some L-Word gossip ..

Season 3, Ep 9:
(caps thanks to stephblues.com)

- Bette and Tina are not doing so good at all.  Bette takes some time off at a Buddhist retreat ..  No luck, she can't seem to relax or stop worrying about her life..

- Meanwhile, Tina goes on a date with a divorced man .. he seems great, good with Angelica and Tina seems to be liking him ..

- Jenny organizes a party for Max(Moira) to raise money for her surgery.  Everything was going great at the party until Max sees Jenny dancing with another guy and freaks out in a jealous rage.  Jenny grows increasingly unsettled with Max's violent outbursts and short temper...

- Dana had pretty much told Lara to leave after she got out of the hospital (last episode), so Alice has been taking care of her.
Dana seems a little uneasy about Alice going on a date with someone else, although she tries her best to hide it.  Alice's date is interrupted when Dana calls her to say that she is not feeling well.  Turns out that Dana had developed an infection (due to her weakened immune system after all the chemo) and she was rushed to the hospital.

- Shane and Carmen go to visit Carmen's family .. everything was going well until Carmen's mom suggested that Shane "hang out" with one of the guys she had over for dinner.  Carmen gets angry and basically comes out to her mother and the entire family, stating that Shane is her girlfriend.  Well, that pretty much wrapped up their dinner plans 'cause Carmen's mom told them to leave.
Later, Shane tells Carmen that she thinks she shouldn't have said anything just then .. 'cause she is worried that she'll lose Carmen's
family, especially since she has grown to like them alot.  Aww..

- After a having sex on camera with Dylan (the filmmaker), Helena is shocked when she later gets a letter from Dylan's attorney stating that she (Helena) was being sued for sexual harassment.  She is dumbfounded, especially because she has been seeing Dylan for a while now and it seemed like they were quite taken with each other .. Turns out that Dylan and her boyfriend planned the entire thing ..

Spoilers ..

Today's episode was a very emotional one.
I cried .. because ..
Well, Dana died in hospital.   :( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Alice had been sitting by her bed for 5 days in total.  The nurse urged her to go take a breathe of fresh air, to go for a walk.  Alice reluctantly accepted and was gone for a while, came back and ..well, while she was gone, Dana suffered a cardiac arrest and they could not resuscitate her ..  :'( :'(..  Before Alice left for her walk though, Dana told her she loved her.  I really didn't see that coming at all ..  I am so not ready to lose Dana ..
wwaaaaaaaaahhh.. :'(

A little L Word gossip before I turn in for the night!

- Dana's church funeral did not go so well (when her family treats her friends coldly and did not acknowledge that she was gay) .. Alice takes some of Dana's ashes and the girls take a little trip to Dana's favorite place to celebrate their friend and spread her ashes.  :'(  Lara comes back from Paris after the event and breaks down in Alice's arms ..  :'(

- Bette and Tina are splitsville and Bette wants sole custody of little Angelica.

- Max (formerly Moira) gets a 6-figure paying job at a computer company!  A better job at the same company which would not hire her before (at a lower level) when she was a woman!  Go figure!

- Get this .. Shane asks Carmen to marry her!  :D  Carmen finally says yes ..

So we'll see what the season 3 finale next week holds ..

Okay, so Season 3 finale was on last night ..

The most outstanding part of it was ........

SPOILERS.........

Shane did not show up for her wedding!!!!!!!
She left a message saying that she couldn't go throw with it !!
Needless to say Carmen was devastated .. she looked so pretty in her wedding dress and all, only to get there and find out that Shane will not be going through with it.  :-\

I can't wait to find out when Season 4 will be aired!  :)

OK, so you can all laugh and point at me for only now discovering this lovely thread.  Yes, I'm a big L-word fan and I am out here (  :D ).

I just received my season 3 DVDs from Amazon two weekends ago... and spent the whole weekend watching the whole season in two days!  Woohoo.  And, let me tell you, that was a fun weekend!  I was really surprised by the wedding too.  I really didn't think Shane would be so callous... even though she's a rebel and a loner, I never would have expected her to do something so hurtful to Carmen.  Shane's my favorite character, by the way (well, Shane and Alice are my two favorites), so I was especially sad to see this storyline take the negative turn.  I think Carmen's great too.

Thanks for the great thread!

Hey!

Amanda ~  Great to see you here!  One more LW lover, woohoo!!
I agree, my mouth was hanging open when Shane dumped Carmen like that.  I can't wait for Season 4!
I am also going to order my season 1-3 collection pack when I return home from holidays!  That should be fun!
Hope to see more of you here Amanda!  :D

Lee
~ Moira was one of my faves too.  But as Max, I can't quite relate to her/him the same way any more.  :( He and Jenny aren't doing good either .. so I guess the transition to manhood isn't quite smooth-sailing for her.

Gotta love these women!  8)
Title: Re: The L Word: Any fans out there?
Post by: Brown Eyes on December 20, 2006, 10:15:03 pm
Heya Buds!   :-*  Thanks for the nice welcome.

Yeah, Moira/ Max is a difficult topic.  S/he is becoming increasingly difficult as the transition goes along.  The aggression towards Jenny is definitly not OK.  I actually really liked Kit's little lecture to Max... Do you know what I'm talking about here?  I felt like I was really agreeing with Kit.  But, I know that all these issues are incredibly complex.  I'm all for Max becoming who he really is, but it's disappointing to get a glimpse at some of his attitudes towards women... and his pretty conventional aspirations (or so it seems).  I don't think this has anything to do with Max being a transexual...  my dismay at the attitudes would apply to anyone.  As far as Jenny's concerned... I think she really needs to get out of this relationship.  She's a lesbian (or at least that seems to be what she's discovered over all of these episodes) and doesn't need to be/ shouldn't be put back into the role of heterosexual woman (which is what would happen if she sticks with Max through the whole process).
Title: Re: The L Word: Any fans out there?
Post by: Lumière on December 21, 2006, 02:36:51 pm
I agree with your points Amanda.

I figure Jenny was sticking around to see Max through this difficult time he was going through, but she can't continue the romantic relationship because he will eventually be a man and she will still be a lesbian, so that part is complicated.  Also, Max became increasingly aggressive, angry etc as his hormone treatments continued .. One occasion that stands out in mind is the day after the party Jenny organized for him (to raise money for his surgery), he really scared her with his near-violent outburst.  I just figured that relationship was basically over at that point.  Also, I agree with what you said about Max's conversation with Kit.  I found myself agreeing with her completely .. but Max obviously didn't see things her way.

As season 3 drew to a close, I also found myself worrying about Alice (especially after Dana's passing) ..Bette and Tina's dispute over lil Angelica .. Shane and Carmen (obviously) .. There are so many issues to address in season 4, I can't wait!!  ;)

cheers!

Heya Bud!

LOL!  I feel your pain.  Actually, your situation with Amazon is reminding me of my experience waiting for my copy of Brokeback to arrive way back in early April.  I pre-ordered the DVD when it was first announced back in March or something... I mean I ordered it weeks in advance.  But!  Then Amazon was super slow and annoying about actually delivering it.  I remember I had to wait days and days  following the official release of the DVD to finally receive mine.  Grrrr.  I quickly realized that I just would have been better off buying it in the store the day it was released.  Silliness.  Usually Amazon is great (and I buy stuff from them all the time), but when they have a glitch it often means waiting a long time.

Keep us posted.

Hey M!

I'm happy to hear you're enjoying watching the 1st Season!   :D  I'll get busy and start re-watching it myself.  Maybe since you've just watched a bunch of it and it's still fresh for you, you could suggest a few discussion topics/ questions.  I'll suggest some too once I've watched it again (I'll probably be done by Friday night or Saturday- I'll keep you posted).

I still think it would be fun to wrangle up a discussion group!

cheers

Okay .. an idea for discussion, Amanda ..  ;)

- Jenny's "coming out" process / her relationship with Marina.

Jenny is a very complex character and over the series, we have seen her go through all kinds of experiences.
It was interesting to start from Season 1 and see how things started for her in LA and how the relationships she had affected her growth as a character through the following seasons.  So I thought The Life of Jennifer Schecter is a place we could start our discussions.   :)

More ideas?
Title: Re: The L Word: Any fans out there?
Post by: Brown Eyes on February 16, 2007, 11:50:04 pm
Heya,

These seem like great topics.  It's interesting that Jenny is such a focus in the first season.  The audience is positioned through a lot of it to sort of experience the gay scene through her inexperienced eyes.  It's an interesting choice on the part of the writers, etc.  There's clearly no real, singular protagonist in a group show like this.  But, it's always felt like she is really foregrounded for a while (and then recedes in some later seasons).  Marina is an interesting factor... she's such a difficult character and it's interesting to see how they portray Jenny's attraction for her develop. Obviously they click on an intellectual level, but one of my favorite things about Jenny's newfound attraction to Marina is that it seems to be so physcial.  She seems to really like to look at Marina (from a distance, etc.).  She likes to watch her walk around, move about in the restaurant, etc..  Jenny seems proud to be the object of attraction from a woman as beautiful as Marina too.  For some reason, I found this aspect of their initial attraction really refreshing and real.  It's interesting just how much of an observer Jenny is... her seeming love for observing Marina and at the very beginning we catch her watching Shane and the girl in the pool.  Interesting.

A lot of the first season (from the perspective of the Jenny character) seems to be about her struggle about identifying as either bisexual or lesbian.  Yeah, Jenny is definitely one of the most complex characters.

 :)

Hey Amanda ..

You have really summed up The Life of Jenny Schecter amazingly!  :D

I agree with you wholeheartedly.  Jenny's physical attraction to Marina was undeniable.  I bet she felt like whenever they were together, she was on a slippery slope, helpless and unable to stop herself from falling.  Marina seemed to enjoy the effect she had on Jenny .. I think she always knew when Jenny's eyes followed her around the room.  Interesting too that she ending up falling for Jenny herself - although she always gave the impression that everything was under control.  Do you think she loved Jenny?  I think she did towards the end, when she realised how miserable she was with her girlfriend taking off to work all the time and keeping her on a very short leash.  Very interesting, the way things turned out.  :)

Can we talk about Shane now?  ;D
I was none too thrilled when she started that affair with Cherie .. I can't stand that woman! lol
Title: Re: The L Word: Any fans out there?
Post by: Brown Eyes on February 20, 2007, 01:02:19 am
Well, yes, I would almost always rather talk about Shane than Jenny.  I mean I find Jenny interesting, but a little too gloomy.  It's interesting how even really early on the writers position Shane as the woman that no one can resist.  And this seems to really carry over to L Word fans too.  There truly is something about Shane's attitude and look that's hard to resist.  Beyond this, I think a lot of the first season for Shane is about setting her up to be a "player".   And, maybe as a side note to this, we're supposed to learn a little bit about how hard her life has been growing up.  I like how in one of the early episodes a woman in a restaurant says she thinks Shane looks like a rock star (do you know the scene I'm talking about?).  I think this is really a good description of her.  Not only is she glamourous in a grungy sort of way, but she's also unattainable (like a rock star is).

Yup, Shane is definitely hot.

Okay, where was we?  8)
Ah yes..SHANE ..

Once again Amanda, I second everything you said on the subject.

Shane is far from perfect, in fact in the first season, we see some of the things she can get up to..  ;) .. She loves the ladies.  Well, loves them and leaves them, anyway.  Remember the young woman who took it upon herself to "expose" Shane's shenanigans to the whole world? lol .. She printed flyers, was handing them out on the street, telling people to keep their daughters away from Shane.  That was funny.  When Shane confronted her, it was only a matter of minutes before she changed her tune and fell for Shane all over again.

I am rambling ..
I guess my point is:  Shane is charismatic, she is gorgeous, she has a wicked sense of style, and like you said Amanda - she is unattainable.  They say people want what they can't have, right?  Is there any wonder she is a babe magnet?  8)

I loved Carmen and Shane together - they made a very sexy couple.  I think Carmen was the second person she fell in love with .. (after that Cherie woman broke her heart ..) .. They were cute together ..

Hey Bud,

I agree that I really, really like Shane and Carmen together.  I think Carmen is really smart and I like that she doesn't let Shane intimidate her or walk over her (like some of the women who have had crushes on Shane seem to have done).  I feel like Carmen really pushed Shane to grow up a little bit and to become invested in the relationship in ways that seem to make Shane uncomfortable.  I thought the drama regarding the wedding was so disappointing.  It's hard for me to imagine Shane actually doing that.  It was an odd choice the writers made I think.  By the time the wedding was set to happen I really feel like Shane had moved beyond a stage where she would do something like that (regardless of what her father is like).  And, I think you're right that we're supposed to understand that the only other woman that Shane was really interested in was Cherie.  But, I never understood the Cherie thing.  I never felt like they had real chemistry.  I do feel like Shane and Carmen have chemistry.  I guess I'm just really rooting for Shane and Carmen.

Anyway, thanks for all the great pics that you post!  They certainly keep this thread exciting!
 :D :-*

I felt like the whole dumping Carmen at the altar bit was added hastily .. maybe for suspense and to keep us on edge, waiting for the next season.  I was already there, I didn't need Shane to dump Carmen to keep me waiting impatiently for Season 4..lol
I can't wait to check out the new season though .. Cant wait!!  8)

I also think her family adds a really interesting dynamic to the relationship with Shane.

Hey Lucise!

That Alice wallpaper is awesome!!  8)

I love Alice.  She seems like such a wonderful warm friend.  It'd be so nice to see her story line really take off in a positive direction.  I feel like she had it really, really rough with the Dana storyline.  And, she often seems to be in the role of "supportive friend" where everyone else is leaning on her.  It would be so nice to see her in a positive storyline where she's front-and-center instead of in a somewhat supporting role.

I need to order Season 4 myself.  I would love to discuss that with you once we both have our copies and can watch the season from the beginning together!  I don't have Showtime on my cable (I don't subscribe to premium channels) so I wait for the DVDs of the shows I like.   So... definitely... let's watch and discuss Season 4 when we both have them on DVD!

The one and only time I pre-ordered something from Amazon was... the DVD for BBM!  :D And, it was a silly experience.  I ended up having to wait for about a week past the DVD's release date for it to arrive in the mail.  But, I recall that it's often a good deal to pre-order on Amazon in terms of discounts.  But, I will definitely order the 4th season of the L-Word.  Have no fear about that. ;)  I have all 3 earlier seasons on DVD already so I'm excited to expand the collection.

Hey Bud,

Well, here's my situation... I have a busy weekend coming up and I'm not planning on watching the L Word DVDs tonight... so I can wait for a while. And, I'm going to be away on a business trip all next week (and away from BetterMost during that time too).  I'll be away from Sunday afternoon until the evening of Friday, Nov. 2.  I'll probably really want to watch it that weekend (of Nov. 3rd), so maybe by then you'll have your copies.

Hey Milli! (I see you're back to Lucise these days 8) )!

So, I watched the first dvd today!

Getting to the point of actually watching has been an ordeal... not long after my dvds arrived my dvd player completely broke.  It all of a sudden wouldn't load discs or spin the discs (as far as I could tell).  I had a heart-stopping moment when I thought my Brokeback dvd was completely stuck or jammed in there.  But, I got it out after some wrestling. phew!

Anyway, so today I went to Target and bought a new dvd player... which are amazingly cheap these days!  I got one for $35!!

So... here are a few of my impressions so far... disc 1 has 3 episodes on it...

**Spoilers**

First of all I really miss Dana... it's weird to watch the show without her character.  And, I also really miss Carmen... so far at least she's not in this season.  I think the actress got a new gig.  I'm not a fan of Shane's new dilemma of having to take care of her brother.   It's interesting, because clearly the writers are pushing Shane to become more responsible following the Carmen fiasco... but, having the brother around hampers Shane's style.  That said, she's still one of my all-time favorite characters and remains insanely sexy and hot.
 :P 8)

There's a new character introduced named Papi, who's positioned as Shane's main rival as #1 player.  It's actually pretty funny and the Papi character actually is also really sexy (I think).  In episode 3 there's a whole cowgirl-themed party in which there's a funny little dream-sequence where Shane and Papi have a little imaginary duel.  It's very funny... especially how Shane reacts to the whole rivalry thing.  I was actually bracing myself for a Brokeback reference during the cowgirl-party.  But, there never was one.

Jenny is still a mess.  So far this season her character is being annoying and very self-centered (at least in my opinion).  Marina makes a brief re-appearance, which is kind of nice.  I really like that actress.  Although, I could never really buy that Marina would have been all that into Jenny.

I think the main drama of the season will be about Bette and Tina, not surprisingly.  Tina is still trying to build a life with a boyfriend, causing all sorts of tension with all her lesbian friends and of course tension over the baby.  I wonder if Bette and Tina will get back together.  I sort of think they will... I get the sense that Tina is already feeling out-of-place in the straight world as demonstrated by the really awkward party that she throws with her boyfriend.

And, Max is still there in this season and seems to be adjusting better to his transition. And, he has a new girlfriend. But, Max has not told this new girlfriend (I'm forgetting her name) that he's an ftm transsexual... so of course that's where the drama will come in.  I'm glad that Jenny explained to Max why it's impossible for the two of them to date anymore.  Near the beginning of episode 1, Max still wants to work things out with Jenny.  But, it was a real relief to hear Jenny clearly explaining that she's a lesbian and interested in dating women, while Max is/ wants to be a straight man and wants a straight girlfriend and therefore the two of them will never match up again. It was a really interesting conversation... and Jenny's best moment so far this season.

And, Alice is getting to have some fun so far, which is really nice given all the heavy drama she had to deal with for Dana, etc. recently.  I love Alice and I hope something works out for her.

That scene made me LOL.  It was so silly and fun to watch.  Papi kept trying to get into Shane's business, but Shane didn't give her the pleasure of 'rising to the occasion' by acknowledging the fact that she has 'major competition'.  :)

Jenny is still a mess.  So far this season her character is being annoying and very self-centered (at least in my opinion).

My thoughts exactly.  There were a few occasions when I welcomed the thought of hitting her over the head with my remote control, but alas.. ;D
Mia K. does a great job of making Jenny such a painful mess.  I love her for it.   :)

How about we get the ball rolling on the new characters.  What do you think of them?  We touched on this subject earlier, but I thought I'd bring it here.  I'll start with Phyllis:

Phyllis is Bette's boss at the university — a well-respected member of the academic community and devoted wife to an equally successful husband, Leonard, with whom she shares two college-aged daughters. It's a seemingly idyllic life picture and one that abruptly changes when Phyllis comes out as a lesbian and turns to Bette and her friends for guidance in finding love and dealing with the loss of the family life she once knew. [sho.com]

I really like Cybill Shepherd and I loved to see her added to the cast of the show.
Phyllis goes out on the town one night and runs into Bette and the gang..that is when she meets Alice.  She quickly became very smitten with her (understandably  ;) ) .. their liaison is fun for a while until Phyllis starts to come on too strong for Alice's liking.  Then enter ... Tasha.  8)

Heya,

It's a good idea to analyze the new characters a bit.

I've now watched the whole season (it's amazing how fast a whole season can go by when you have all the dvds lined up and ready to go).  So, my impressions will be flavored by an overall impression.

I was skeptical about the Cybill Shepherd/ Phyllis character at first.  But, I grew to really love her.  There's something very endearing about that character... and I can't quite articulate why I ended up really liking her... something about her role discovering herself and discovering the lesbian community, etc. was really charming.  And, I love that she loves Allice (even if she did get a little obsessive).  I think Alice is so wonderful and I truly hope there's some great, happy ending for that character.

I'm glad you brought up Tasha... because she was immediately appealing and intriguing to me.  As a very introverted, military person who is very concerned about "being found out", she reminds me of the closest thing to an Ennis-character that the L-Word has yet produced.  It's really charming to see Alice make her smile and loosen up (at rare moments) in the exact same way that it's charming to watch Jack get Ennis to loosen up.  The parallels between these characters are certainly not precisely exact (of course)... but I do think comparisons here are warranted.

So what do you think of Shane's new blond girlfriend.... ? :)

Hey Amanda!  :)

What do I think about Paige?

Well, she seems like a strong woman and a good mom to her kid.  I think she fell for Shane the moment she saw her (like many others have done).   :)  Overall, I like that character.  I especially loved it when she got Shane to go with her to Shey's school to give a talk on tolerance.  I am not quite sure, however, about their getting a house and moving in together just yet.  You made a very good point when you said that Shane does not seem to have adequately handled the way things ended with Carmen last season.   This might introduce further drama in the future.
I think that Paige and Shane make a cute couple, but as we know, that is hardly enough to make a relationship work.  I am gonna have to wait till the next season to see how that works out.  :)

Next up, Jodi...
I think I have a few things to say about her, but you first.   :)

Heya,

Yes, I think it's almost odd that this season doesn't really deal with the ramifications of Shane leaving Carmen at all.  I feel like that's a big, gapping hole in the plot... or perhaps something that will come up again in the future.  I hope Shane isn't using Paige as a "rebound" relationship.  But, given the whole situation with Shane's brother... Shane seems to have matured quite a lot during this season.  But, I'm also skeptical that she's ready to settle down with Paige permanently.  I also sort of wonder about Paige's sexuality.   Paige seems **really** into Shane throughout the season, but I wonder if she's really a lesbian... or really interested in establishing a life with a woman permanently (I hope she is).  I think the love-making scene between Shane and Paige (I think in the last episode of the season... or close to the end of the season at least) is one of the hottest and most realistic love scenes that they've shot on the L-Word.

Jodi for me is a bit like Phyllis... It took me a while to warm up to Jodi.  But, as the episodes progressed I liked her more and more.  I think she's a good fit for Bette... and honestly a more believable fit for Bette than Tina.  I think there's a moment somewhere in this season where Tina actually observes that Jodi is well matched to Bette because of her intensity.  And, I think that's exactly right.  Ultimately, though, I really do feel like the goal is to see Bette and Tina get back together.  I don't know.  I'm ambivalent about Tina. (By the way, my first and most significant girlfriend was named Tina... so that name choice always freaks me out... although... my Tina was very, very different than the Tina in the L-Word).

Anyway, on a certain level I don't feel like I know enough about Jodi.  I want to know more...  And, again, I really like how she's able to stand up to Bette.

So... what do you think of Jenny and the Curve magazine writer and her girlfriend?  Talk about a messed up situation.  Jenny is a real piece of work this season.

Interesting points!  :)

In the beginning, I got the impression that Jodi was not serious about Bette at all.  In fact, I liked the fact that she was honest enough to tell Bette that she was not monogamous and would be seeing other people.  of course, Bette was already falling for her at that point, so that did not go over so well, especially when Jodi topped it all off by saying that she didn't like children.  As the episodes went by, they grew closer and I got the feeling that Jodi was shifting away from her original "openness" when it comes to relationships.  I love that Jodi does not allow Bette to control her as was the case with Tina.  Jodi tells Bette outright when she is being a control freak - example:  Bette's party for Jodi.  It was meant to be a relaxed occasion for Jodi's sake - of course, it ended up a disaster because Bette was trying too hard and she was jealous about Tina showing up with the film director.  Hmmm.. :) I don't know, I'm afraid there is going to be some drama with Bette and Tina next season.  Overall, I grew to like Jodi and I think she does a great job of holding a mirror to Bette's face, forcing her to address her control issues.

Jenny and the magazine fiasco ... okay, I felt like I was watching a situation go from bad to complete disaster!  ;D  Jenny was thoroughly unforgivable this season, lol.  Another thing was the way she handled the whole 'Lez Girls' book issue when her friends were upset with the content.  Dang, I don't know anyone who is a Jenny fan this time around.  I am a Mia K fan, however.  ;)

What about Helena and her dysfunctional 'relationship' with the 'gambling queen'?

What about Helena and her dysfunctional 'relationship' with the 'gambling queen'?

I agree that Jodi seemed to move quite far away from her original insistence on avoiding a monogomous relationship.  I get the sense that by the end fo the season she had shifted from that stance entirely.  I also think she was making a good-faith effort with Angelica in trying to be more enthusiastic about kids.  I do applaud her, however, for being honest about her feelings about children and her lack of interest in children.

I think the Helena/ gambling queen (I forget her name at the moment) plot line is the most soap-opera-esque this season.  I don't find it even slightly believable and I honestly don't sense any realy chemistry between the two actresses.  Whereas, on the other hand, I do sense tons of chemistry from Shane and Paige, for example.

How do you feel about Papi?  I'm surprised that the writers didn't do more with her character throughout the season, honestly... after all the hype early on in the season.  I think the actress is adorable though!  The whole dynamic with Kit and Papi was an interesting avenue for the L-Word to explore I think.
:)

I think that Papi is a sweet girl masquerading as a tough, devil-may-care type.  :)
I didn't see that whole thing with Kit coming at all.  It was interesting.  Kit was obviously not taking the Angus situation very well and she seemed to hang on to the one person who was flirting and giving her attention - Papi.  You are right, she didn't get any big storylines this season, so we'll see what comes next.

I think the Kit/ Papi dynamic was particularly interesting from Papi's perspective.  She's used to being able to "get' any woman she wants... and in this case Kit is essentially un-attainable.  Even when they're actually in bed it doesn't work.  It's interesting to see how alluring and attractive the "un-attainable" quality is for Papi.  One of my favorite aspects of Papi's character... and the aspect that seems to give her real depth is her friendship with Tasha.  Nice.  I really do hope something more interesting happens with Papi in the future.

This season I like Max too.  I think he was extremely difficult in earlier seasons. Max seems to be adjusting to his transition much, much better at this point.  But, towards the end I was really curious to hear the exchange where he said he wasn't sure he'd go through with the surgery after all since he was worried about it being irreversible.  I thought that was somewhat unexpected... and very interesting... coming from him.  I'll tackle the subject of Max again in later posts...  It's getting late here and I'm getting sleepy.  He's definitely worth discussing in greater depth.  I've known 3 ftm transsexuals in the past (one I knew quite well... I'm out of touch with all of them now)... and I think the L-Word is dealing with this very difficult topic quite well.

I thought I'd leave a few lines in here... Where did we leave off last day?  Right, Max... :)

Max went through some interesting changes this season.

He seemed to have found some comfort in his transition process, although I sensed that he was very uncomfortable in his body.  When he began a relationship with his boss' daughter, Brooke...it was clear that he really liked her and hoped desperately that she would be okay with his situation when he revealed his secret to her.  I remember that scene in the restaurant when he finally told her what he was really going through.  He looked so devastated when she reacted the way she did, calling him a freak and all that.. :-\  It was painful to watch.

Do you remember the name of the girl he met later?  I've just forgotten her name.  The 'computer geek' whom he interviewed for the job on Alice's site.. :)

I just found out.  Her name is Grace!  It was starting to bug me. =)

Am I the only one who thinks that she has a huge part in Max's changing thoughts about going through with the surgery?
She seemed to see through him from the start and took a genuine interest in him and what he was going through.  She supported him and stood by him when his mother died.
Those were great but I think the turning point for him might've been during that love scene in the second-to-last, or could it be the last episode?
No matter how much Max tried to shrink away and hide his body from her, she drew closer and embraced him and showed that she longed o touch his body just at it was.  That was a pretty amazing scene, actually.  i could see Max's wall crumble slowly and start to fall apart.. Definitely one of my favorite scenes this season..  :)

Heya,

Sorry I've been slow at getting back to this great conversation...

Yeah, Max is one of the most complex and interesting story lines this season... without question.  And, yes, having Grace help him and support him seems to be making a big difference... but I think Max is coming to terms with some things on his own too, which seems really important.

He just seems calmer and better adjusted.  The whole situation with his father was so complicated... do you remember when his father called him "son" for the first time?  That was amazing.  Talk about getting lots of mixed signals from his family about acceptance, rejection... and just totally not getting it.

So, what did you think about Dana's brief "re-appearance" at the end of the season?

When that episode began, I saw her name in the opening credits and was like "hunh??!!".
It was great to see her back, even if it was for a brief moment.  That was a cute little scene with Alice - it showed that she lives on in Alice's mind.. I especially liked the fact that she encouraged Alice to go to Tasha's send-off party.

I hope there is abit more of her next season.. :)

That's a great picture Bud!  Thanks for posting it. :)

So, we talked about Kit and Papi... but I wonder if there's more to be said about the drama between Kit and Angus.  What do you think was really behind Angus cheating?  Do you think the two of them really have a chance to make it?

It was really sad to see Kit turn back to alcohol this season through all this tension with Angus.  I really like Kit.  I hope things work out for her.

I don't know whether Kit will ever really trust Angus again.  They may work it out - towards the end of the season, she seemed more open to him (after things with Papi didn't exactly 'work out').  I guess we'll have to wait and see what they decide to do next season..  :)

The other thing I got to wondering about was - What if Angus had not been caught in the act by Tina and warned off by Bette?  Would he still have continued his affair with the babysitter? Hmm.. I wonder. :)

Heya,

Yes!  I've read Affinity, and I liked it quite a lot!  I love Sarah Waters.  My favorite of these three books is still Fingersmith.  But, I really loved both Affinity and Tipping the Velvet.  I wonder if a movie (or BBC mini-series) will be made of Affinity as happened with the other two.  I hope so!  That would be great.

I'll admit that Waters' most recent book, The Night Watch, was a bit of a disappointment to me.  It just didn't strike me in the same way as Tipping the Velvet, Fingersmith and Affinity.

She's such a great author though... I'll always read her stuff!  I hope she has something new in the works for us soon!
:)

Hey Amanda!

After reading Affinity, I was almost depressed at the ending.  I think I sensed that it would not end too favorably for Margaret Prior but I was not prepared for the extent of the deceit and fraud. Damn.   :-\

I started reading FingerSmith today.  I have seen the movie but the book will no doubt be wonderful and more descriptive.

I also read The Night Watch and I loved it.  Sarah W. is a very talented author & I appreciate her interest in writing stories set in different times/settings and I love the variety she brings to the table.  There are only so many "Tipping the Velvets" she can do before she is sick of the subject, I am sure. ;)

I read somewhere that she is working on another novel (that is not a lesbian-themed story) set in the 1950s.  I'll read absolutely anything she writes, so I am waiting for this new book, who knows how long it'll be...  :)

Heya! That's so exciting about the new season!!  8)

And, I just want to say I love your current Marlene Dietrich image in your signature.  I love her.  I think she's so sexy and glamorous.  I think a lot of the image of Kitty and Nan in their stage costumes comes from old images of Marlene Dietrich.  There really is something so alluring about a woman in a tux and top-hat.  I wonder what that's about?  Gorgeous.  LOL... I think we should start a new thread all about Tipping the Velvet and other Sarah Waters books/films.  What do you think?

Hey Amanda!

Glad you like the siggie!
Marlene Dietrich is one of my favorites.  She looked unbelievably hot in a tux & top hat as your pic attests.  ;)

I think we should start a Sarah Waters Books/Films thread as you said.  Let's go for it.  Where shall we put it?  The Culture Tent perhaps?
Yeehaw!  8)  Looking forward to it!

;D  I'm glad you like the suggestion.  Yes, I think it should go in Culture Tent... and I'll let you do the honors of starting it if you'd like.  Or, of course I'd be happy to if you prefer.  Maybe you could make a cool image or collage of images for the intro post or something!
 ;) :)

Actually, there's a lot to discuss with Waters' stories I think.  And, I'd love to get into some of that in greater depth.

Finally got to watch S5 Ep. 1 last night after much waiting ( as is clearly evident in this thread, lol).

I can't say much without spoiling it so I'll stick to general comments...

Shane looks rather dashing this season.  8)
Don't know what it is, but it looks like she gained a bit more weight/muscle and she's looking rather good.

Jenny is acting like a &*%$#$!  ;D  I don't know what the deal is with her.

Things are starting to heat up almost right away actually.. :)

LOL, hey Bud!  Thanks for the update.  I'm not at all surprised that Jenny's behaving badly.  She often does.  Especially in Season 4.

Maybe she will be 'straightened out' at some point during this season, but I swear, this last episode, she put on more airs than she did in S4.. (and that's putting it mildly) lol.

Yeah, she's definitely one of the most difficult characters.  It was interesting that she was sort of pitched as a main "protagonist" in the first several episodes of Season 1.  I think we were all supposed to feel like we were being introduced to this big lesbian society through her eyes (rather naive at the time).

I never, honestly, would have guessed the direction her character has taken.  She was always troubled and sometimes a little disturbing.  But, as of Season 4, she really has gotten pretty extreme.  It will be fun to see how the writers deal with here as things move along.

Jenny, jenny, Jenny... lol

She isn't really part of 'the gang' anymore either.  She's pretty much alienated herself from everyone, especially after the whole 'Lez Girls' episode.  At this point in time, I think the only friends she may have left are Shane, Max(maybe) and that cute little dog of hers (who happened to be the subject of one of her hissy fits in S5, Ep. 1) .  ;D

Just finished watching another episode tonight...

Jenny ~ Gosh.  (see my most recent posts here on the subject)

-Overall vibe of this season - Fairly playful so far though some storylines are starting to heat up, especially: Tasha's under investigation by the military (charge: homosexuality); tension surrounding Bette/Jodi/Tina (things just escalated after today's ep.)..

One more thing - if you watched the S5 previews/cast interviews I posted earlier in this thread, the producers said there would be a lot more sex this season.  Well, I think they were right. lol.
Title: Re: The L Word: Any fans out there?

S5 is now winding down ..
I think there are about 2 or 3 episodes left before the season is over.

I have enjoyed the season so far - some of the story lines were good, some highly unlikely though entertaining... there have been fun, sad, annoying, sexy moments ...
The L word is still I show I can relax and watch and be entertained.  I will definitely be adding this season to my dvd collection...I hope there will be a Season 6.

Amanda - I wish we were able to chat about these episodes as they aired.  :)

I just found a website today - ourcharts.com and on there, I located Ilene Chaiken's blog  (http://www.ourchart.com/node/348438)  (L Word creator)..

It is now clear that Season 6 will be the last season of the series.
Shyte.
I hoped for at least 2 more.  Damn, oh well, I hope they make S6 a damn good one!!  8)

...

In other L-Word news..

Yesterday's episode really felt good to me for some reason (I watched it twice).
Still can't give away no plot secrets but ...
The more I get to see of Tasha, the more I like her.  She went through rough times this season and it just made me happy to see her in a place where she was happy.  That and the fact that she is gorgeous and has the best voice/laugh ever. ;)
Last night's was a good show..

Still wondering when S5 DVDs become available to preorder...

there promises to be some Bette-Jodhi-Tina drama going on..

Still no S5 DVD news... looks like I'm gonna have to give it a couple of weeks before I check again.

Heya Milli!  I wanted to let you know that when I go home from work today I'm planning on ordering the 5th season DVD set!  I got a gift certificate yesterday, and that's how I'm planning on spending it.  I'll order Beyond the Pale at the same time.

:)

I'm really missing the L Word lately.

p.s.  On a slightly random note, with all the attention paid these days to Lindsay Lohan and her girlfriend Samantha Ronson in the news... it keeps striking me how much Sam sort of reminds me of Shane (in terms of image and demeanor, etc.).

Here are some pics of Sam with her newer, short dark hair.  I think she looks super cute with both the blonde and the dark hair.  But, I think she looks less Shane-like with the short hair.  Her sense of style definitely reminds me of Shane regardless of the hair...

Amanda...

My S5 Dvds got here at lunch time today! ;)

Yeehaw!!!  Great news Bud!

I've watched 4 episodes so far!  And, boy, you're absolutely right that Jenny is quite a piece of work this season.

I'm at the point where Bette and Tina have recently hooked up a bit at that new lesbian bar.  It would be nice to see them get back together.  My feeling is that the whole series has been building up to a point where they'd eventually get back together again.  Although, I really liked Tina's new girlfriend, Brenda.  I thought she was super cute.

There are a few loose ends from the first several episodes.  I feel like that was quite some drama with Shane's business burning down... but we haven't learned too much about that yet in terms of follow up.  And, I feel like there are lots of unresolved issues that came out of Bette's tense weekend visit to the cabin with Jodi and her friends.  Boy was that uncomfortable.  I feel like there's some stuff that went on there that hasn't really been tackled (yet).  I really don't like Jodi much, so I'll be happy if Bette breaks up with her eventually.

I still totally love Alice.  I dream of having a best-lesbian friend like her someday.  But, I was sort of upset with her for photographing the two basketball players dancing together at the secret Hollywood gay party.  I really didn't think she would do something like that.  I hope she doesn't use that photo in a public way.

Well... there's so much to discuss!  Even in just the first 4 episodes.  But, I'm at work now and should run...

More later...

cheers,
A

Yeah, Jenny & her creepily obsessive bizarre new assistant. lol.
Jenny does get a little tolerable as the season progresses though. At least I think so..

And, I feel like there are lots of unresolved issues that came out of Bette's tense weekend visit to the cabin with Jodi and her friends.

That weekend was a disaster.  Now that I am watching the episodes again...there was always something off between Jodi & Bette.  Their personalities clashed and even though they loved each other, there is a vibe there that suggests they will not be able to make things work.

You'll have to keep watching to see what happens... 8)

Ditto.  She's pretty durn cool.  :)

That episode with Shane working at the wedding was just over the top & hilarious.  Shane, Shane, Shane..
At least she made the effort to go on a 'cleanse' from drama & sex..lol.

What do make of Tasha this season.. what with the military investigation and all?

I'm hoping to watch the next 2 episodes tonight.

Hi Milli,

I watched 3 more episodes last night... the last one I watched was the one with the oil wrestling!  :o

Yes, I was actually thinking the exact same thing about there being more representations of sex this season...  I think the L Word had received some criticism for being too chaste (in comparison to Queer as Folk for instance).  So, I wonder if they were responding to that.  And, things like "Shebar" with the oil wrestling event, etc. reminds me of an equivalent of club Babylon in Queer as Folk.

Anyway... poor Alice and Tasha.  It's really sad to see the whole closeted/ not-closeted issue tearing them apart in relation to Tasha's case.  I think they're a great couple, so I'm betting they'll get back together.  And, now I see the point of Alice taking that picture during the secret Hollywood gay party (which bothered me at the time she took it... but now I see how it's become interesting).  Also, I have a hunch that the prosecuting officer on Tasha's case is also a lesbian... but I guess we'll see.

Adele really is becoming scary!  Yikes!

Oh, and I'd be thrilled if Bette and Tina get back together... at the moment things are looking good. :)

I think I get to the oil wrestling episode tonight. lol.

Re: Tasha & Alice...
Yeah, the whole investigation process created a rift between them.  You could see how much Tasha wanted to stay in the military, even if she had to live in the closet.  Alice is out and very proud ;); she could not understand why anyone would want to be a part of an institution that cements discrimination into its very foundation.  I can understand her point.  I appreciated the fact that she tried to protect Tasha by cutting back on all the PDA, not going out as much, etc.  Still, it was a sensitive issue they had to either tiptoe around or address head on and clash.

That whole incident with the gay, homophobe NBA player widened the rift between them.  I can understand why Alice outed him.  She was enraged by his blatant homophobia & uploaded the video to her blog... clearly she didn't think that it would get so much publicity or potentially break up his family life.  She had a point about people like that spreading hate while hiding their shadows in the closet.

I don't personally think that I would have posted it if I were in Alice's shoes, but can't say I blame her for calling him out on it either.
What would you do in her place?  Would you post the video? :)

I haven't re-watched that episode yet, but I distinctly remember her (briefly) checking out Alice at one point.
She probably had to perfect the skill of serving in silence..  :-\
(Btw - have you seen the movie "Serving in Silence"  with Glenn Close & Judy Davis - very good.  :) )

What point are you at?  :)

Hi Milli,

Sorry for the delay in the thread here... I haven't watched anymore episodes since the oil wrestling one.  My parents came for a surprise visit this weekend!  Yikes!  They called on Saturday and said they'd be here on Sunday!  And, they just left when I left for work this morning.  So, I was busy cleaning my apartment, etc. a lot this weekend and then visiting with my folks.

I'll probably have time to watch an episode or two tonight though! :)

Title: Re: The L Word: Any fans out there?

Heya Milli! So, I watched 3 episodes tonight!  I've finished watching the first 3 DVDs now.  The last episode I watched was the one where Kit foolishly brings the gun to Shebar and then finds Angelica playing with it later that night.  Scary!

So, I have some new comments.. that span a number of the episodes I've watched recently.

First of all, Tasha just rocks.  I was so proud of her for standing up for Alice (and for herself) during her "trial."  That whole story line just sends chills up my spine to realize how unfair military policies are and particularly over anything having to do with homosexuality.  I know it was hard for Tasha to turn her back on the military with her decision to say what she did... but it's like her whole demeanor changed after she just decided to be honest and admitted that she loves Alice.  When she ran to catch up with Alice after the trail, she was just glowing in a whole new way.  What a relief to have that burden of always hiding off of her shoulders.  Anyway, I thought it was very romantic of her too...  I think she and Alice are totally adorable together and I really hope they work out in the long run.

And, now I see just how scary Adele has become with the blackmailing!  Wow... that's super creepy.  I think the actress who plays Adele does a really good job though... so while she's a creepy character, I enjoy that actress.

I was totally amused by the Molly/ Shane hook-up.  I think they're cute together but it's hard for me to imagine that becoming anything really serious.

I also think Nicki and Jenny are cute together... I hope Nicki comes around, after the drama with Adele's blackmail has blown over.  I actually really like Nicki (she's immature, but I think she seems like her heart really is in the right place).  It would be so surprising to see Jenny in a real/ good relationship.

The recent episodes that I just watched actually helped to rectify something that was kind of bugging me on the topic of the L-Word this season showing more sex...  In many of the earlier episodes there seemed to be a lot of kind of "heavy petting" or making-out-plus representations of lesbian sex, while avoiding some of the more significant elements of lesbian sex... with the situation between Shane and Molly and the romp between Nicki and Jen caught on camera... at least some of that was covered.  LOL, that one episode that included Tina and Bette in the elevator and Shane making out with Molly was so funny for it's self-consciously steamy content.

And, as for the Bette-Tina-Jodi love triangle... I'm happy to see that Bette and Jodi are in the process of breaking up.  As I've mentioned before, I've never really gotten into Jodi as a character... and I really want to see Bette and Tina together again.  I feel very, very bad for Jodi... but still I can't help cheering for Bette and Tina.

Heya Milli!
Sorry for the delay in posting my review now that I've seen the whole season.

When the last episode ended I found myself really wanting more! It felt like it ended a bit abruptly for the season... but it definitely makes me anxious to see the next season so it seems the ending did its job.  Am I correct in understanding there will only be one more season?

Overall, as we mentioned in earlier posts, there was definitely a lot more sex and "risque" content in this season.  Which frankly, I thought was fun.  And, I just kept feeling like there were more and more parallels with Queer as Folk...  the Shebar over-the-top club which seems like a nod to Babylon in QaF and even Shane is making me think a bit of a character like Brian at this point (or that parallel seemed more pronounced this season).

I was shocked though that Shane hooked up with Nicki at the end.  As naughty as Shane can be, I really didn't see that coming.  Shane truly is wracking up a track record of being quite the heartbreaker (obviously) but some of her choices really are brutal.  I know that Jenny and Shane are meant to be best friends (that's even discussed explicitly a time or two this season), but I honestly don't feel that vibe between the two characters.  Or maybe the two actresses aren't making that dynamic work.  Jenny and Shane just seem way too different to be best friends.  Frankly, I'd think that Shane would get bored with Jenny (even as a friend), but maybe I'm being cynical.  Anyway, but since we're meant to believe that Jenny and Shane are BFF, Shane's antics with Nicki were pretty awful.  It's almost a pattern with the L Word... to have seasons end when Shane is doing something particularly bad or naughty.

Adele, as we've mentioned is just awful... and wow, what a sell out to change the ending of the movie she hijacked from Jenny too.  Scary, scary.  But, I still like that actress... I think she does a good job with that wacko character.

And LOL, wow what a way for Jodi and Bette to break up!  Yikes!  I thought that was truly awful of Jodi to use footage of Bette in her art piece/ opening like that.  The public humiliation factor just reflected back really poorly on Jodi.  But, as you know, I'm not a huge Jodi fan.  Though, I do agree with Jodi that the phrase Bette used about the two of them having different "core values" was totally, totally lame.  First of all that phrase just sounds so clinical, detached and almost academic... cold.  But, it also just sounds dorky. LOL!

I was glad to see Helena come back at the end of the season.  It was nice to see her swoop in and save the day by buying Shebar.  All of a sudden her character has gotten more interesting and complex I think.

And, now I don't know what's up with Alice and Tasha.  I hope they pull things together ultimately.  I think they're so great together it would be such a shame for them to break up.  One thing I don't understand is why Alice seems to have so little interest in meeting or hanging out with Tasha's group of friends.  That doesn't seem that fair to me, especially since Alice is so wrapped up with her own friends.  And, that fashion designer she has a crush on doesn't seem to hold a candle to Tasha.  So, that's weird to me.

Anyway... more late! 8)

Oh, and I wanted to post something interesting about the character Clea - the fashion designer that Alice develops a crush on.

That actress, Melanie Lynsky was in a campy but fun lesbian movie in 2000 called But I'm a Cheerleader (she played a character named Hilary).  But I'm a Cheerleader starred Natasha Lyonne and featured RuPaul out of drag, as a fairly major character.  And!  Here's a BBM connection... Michelle Williams was in it too!

Here's the imdb page for the movie:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0179116/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0179116/)

I actually recommend watching it if you've never seen it.  As I said, it's very campy and kitschy (purposefully)... but the ending actually made me cry a little bit when I first saw it (as dorky as that is)... it takes a sweet little turn at the end.

I'm glad that you've seen and like But I'm a Cheerleader.  I also have a soft spot for that movie... even though in certain ways it's kind of a strange movie. I had completely forgotten that Michelle Williams was in that until last night when I looked up the movie's imdb page.

No, I haven't seen Heavenly Creatures, but I want to.  The whole story and the circumstance regarding the mystery writer Anne Perry certainly seems riveting.

Yes.  The next and final season will premiere in January '09 on Showtime.
I think it will be only 8 episodes long.
If you are interested in a possible rundown of Season 6 and you don't mind the spoilers, you can get some info on it here:  http://www.thelwordonline.com/s6_spoilers.html#Season%206

True.
There were definitely more than a few moments when I didn't care for Jenny's character at all.  But towards the end, she got more likeable - I think she started to grow out of her selfish, sometimes childish ways and was starting to develop better relationships with the rest of the gang.  Shane had always stuck by her even at the times when she was insufferable; she was privy to Jenny's blossoming/full-on feelings for Nikki.  So it must've especially hurt Jenny to find Nikki and Shane in that very compromising position at the party.  Yeah, even if she (Shane) believed that Nikki and Jenny were not together, it was definitely a poor judgement call on Shane's part, no doubt.

If you look at the very few interactions between Nikki and Shane - there was always a tension there.  I got the feeling that Nikki was flirting with Shane a few times.  I seem to recall a conversation they shared during the Pink Ride that indicated to me that Nikki was perhaps harboring an attraction for Shane (she was still with Jenny at the time).

Poor Jenny, though.  I am curious to see how this all works out in S6.

Shane and Phyllis' daughter, Molly - that was an unlikely hookup.  I never felt any real chemistry between them.  I could understand Shane's fascination with her "Straight-girl crush" but I didn't really see their relationship going too far.  Well, who knows what might've come of it, if Phyllis hadn't pretty much told Shane she was 'bringing down' her daughter.

I thought it was interesting to note Phyllis' trepidation/objections surrounding to her daughter's first lesbian relationship (keeping in mind that she'd just come out herself after over two decades of marriage).  Then again, I guess she wasn't just worried about her daughter being gay, she was worried about her daughter being gay AND sleeping with Shane.  ;D

I agree, she brought a certain believable creepiness to the character of Adele.

Here's one scene that was quite bizarre: After Jenny sent Nikki the love letter she'd written, Nikki stopped by Jenny's place to tell her how much the letter meant to her.  Adele was standing there in the shadows, she did look like Jenny (fooled me for a second too).  Thing is - she didn't object when Nikki approached her (thinking she was Jenny), went on and on about the letter and eventually kissed her.  She only pretended to be 'mistaken'/confused when the lights flickered on and Nikki saw who she was.  That was wierd.

Creepy, creepy Adele. ;D

I must admit that the "core values" thing is just the kind of statement Bette would make, don't you think?  Lame as it may be.  LOL.

I thought the scene by the camp fire was so well done.  You couldn't help but sense the total discomfort/tension lingering between Bette/Tina & eventually Jodi when the conversation drifted to exes and cheating and the like.

I felt bad for Jodi but was relieved that the affair was finally revealed.  It was about time Tina and Bette stopped sneaking around and came out with it. lol.  It threw Jodi for a loop, no doubt, I felt her pain ...too bad she resorted to humiliating Bette with the art piece she did.  It was low but some say the taste of revenge is sweet.  Maybe it helped her move on..   ;)

Good point about Alice showing little interest in Tasha's friends.  Now that you mention it - during the Pink Ride, she seemed uncomfortable when Tasha decided to go off and hang out with her old friends for a while.  Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that one of them was Tasha's ex?  Don't know.  You are right though, it seems out of character for Alice somehow.

Re: The fashion designer - She just seems flat somehow, character-wise...  Alice seems smitten and there is an attraction there.  We'll see... fingers crossed that Tasha & Alice stick together!

That's all for now, Bud.. :)

Yikes!  I just discovered this article on MSNBC.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28070138/ (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28070138/)
‘L Word’ to kill off one of its major characters
Premiere of Showtime drama’s final season begins with body in a pool

NEW YORK - Dead is the word when “The L Word” returns.

Showtime’s drama about a circle of lesbian friends and lovers is going to kill off one of its major characters on the premiere of its sixth — and final — season.

The victim is Jenny Schecter, Showtime has disclosed. Jenny, a would-be writer and accomplished two-timer, has long been embraced by fans as the character they most love to hate.

The episode, which airs Jan. 18, begins with a splash as Jenny’s body is discovered in a swimming pool. Accident, or murder — and whodunit? Viewers will have to wait for those answers.

Meanwhile, she won’t be absent from the show: The remainder of the season is heavy with flashbacks of Jenny (played by Mia Kirshner) in the swim with her enemies and pals.

Ah yes...Jenny...

I discovered that piece of news last week as well, and was wondering if I should post it here or not.  :)

Remember when I posted this..

I was hunting for L Word news when I came across an article on AE (AfterEllen.com) that...

Lucy Lawless will be a guest star in S6!!  :D  (http://www.afterellen.com/blwe/09-26-08?page=0%2C1)

I don't care what character they give her; anything will do, I think..  :P

.. turns out Lucy L. will take on the role of police detective investigating the Jenny case.
Should be interesting.  :)

LW news from AE.com:

Leisha Hailey's Alice to Star in "L Word" Spinoff
by
Sarah Warn, Editor in Chief
September 4, 2008
http://www.afterellen.com/TV/2008/9/tlw-spinoff-alice

The previously announced online spinoff of The L Word will revolve around Leisha Hailey's Alice, Showtime announced today.

Ilene Chaiken, creator and exec producer of The L Word, will write and produce the pilot, which will shoot in December.

A shortened sixth and final season of The L Word will debut in January, with the series' finale setting up the premise for the spinoff. No details have yet been given around the spinoff's premise, which will initially debut online, with the potential to move to television.

At the end of the fifth season, the once-bisexual Alice was contemplating breaking up with her girlfriend Tasha (Rose Rollins), and was aggressively pursuing a role in TV journalism.

In-between shooting The L Word, Hailey has been busy promoting her new rock band, Uh Huh Her, which recently released its first album, Common Reaction.

Alice has been a central character on Showtime's lesbian drama since it debuted in 2004. Much of the speculation among fans about which character would lead the spinoff has pointed to Alice Pieszecki as the most likely choice, given the character's overall likability, Hailey's availability, and the fact that she is openly gay (she recently became the new spokeswoman for lesbian cruise company Olivia).

Hi Milli,

Yes, I will wait for the DVDs.  I don't get Showtime in my cable package.  And, since I have the DVDs of all the other seasons, I want to be sure to buy the last set so that I'll have the complete run of the show.  It's hard to wait for sure!  But, I also like having all of the episodes of a season available at once so that I can watch at whatever pace strikes my fancy.

I can't believe the show is coming to an end!  I think the L Word had a good run through, in terms of numbers of seasons.  I wonder if anything will take its place... I mean, I wonder if another show that focuses so specificially on lesbian culture will emerge anytime soon.

Here's some info I  found on the L Word spinoff show Showtime is working on..
(Why they would reveal this much info now... when the new season is just starting, I don't know.  ???)

......Spoilers ahead......

http://www.afterellen.com/TV/2009/1/showtime-confirms-l-word-spinoff-details

At the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour yesterday, Showtime president Robert Greenblatt released a few details about the pilot for the L Word spinoff, a drama series set in a women's prison and tentatively titled The Farm.

The pilot has been shot, Greenblatt told reporters (including AfterElton.com's Michael Jensen, who reported back to us), but Showtime execs have not yet seen it cut together.

The spinoff is "a substantially different show" from The L Word, Greenblatt said, and includes only a few lesbian characters among the cast:

We've been a little bit, sort of, mysterious about the concept, but you know, I don't think it's that much of a mystery anymore. One of the characters from The L Word actually goes to prison, and the show then moves to prison with a largely completely new cast. ... While The L Word was predominantly lesbian characters, [the spinoff is] a big group of characters. And there's a few lesbians in that group, but it isn't the exact makeup of what The L Word was.

"The spinoff is anchored by Leisha Hailey," he told reporters, confirming what Hailey and Chaiken stated publicly a few months ago. "So I guess I've given it up. She's the one that ends up going to jail."

Hunh.  You're right that this desciption does give quite a bit of important info away here!  I'm excited to hear that Leisha will be the focus of the new show.  I love her and I'm glad that there will be an opportunity to see more of her.   The prison theme is interesting and a bit surprising... But, then, we've already had a taste of prison plot lines with Helena.

It'll be interesting to see how all of this develops.

Slight spolier ahead....

So far, there has been much drama (as expected.. :P)
I am liking the fact that characters from previous seasons like Papi, Dylan, (& even Carmen) have/will guest star along the way.
I am hoping Dana will make an appearance as well.

Ooo, I'm excited about the idea of Carmen coming back!  I love Carmen.

And, I can imagine they'll probably bring Dana back in flashbacks or something.  She was such a major character and so beloved by fans, since this is the last season... it would almost be strange if they didn't acknowledge her again.

Yay!  I'm excited!  I'll certainly be buying it too.

I'll be sad to see the L Word end... but I think the series has run its course.  And, it's nice that it had a good number of seasons.

It would be nice if something new would come along with a lot of lesbian content.  LOL, I happened to see the first episode of the new Melrose Place the other night and it looks like one of the characters is going to be a lesbian or bisexual (it looks like they're setting her up to be a bad, bad girl), but something like that isn't the same thing as a series that takes the lesbian community/ identity, etc. as a main topic.  I think there will probably still be some lesbian story lines coming up in this season of Grey's Anatomy too.

Hi Milli (and other L-Worders!),

A thread was just started here in Culture Tent about the new show called Glee.  And, I was inspired to post here about Jane Lynch who played Joyce Wischnia on the L Word.  She has a major role in Glee, and is great!  I'm happy to see her have this new success (or at least so far this new TV show seems to be a success).

There's something amazing about watching an entire season of a show in one weekend. LOL!
I'm on the second to last episode now... the one titled "Last Couple Standing"... and had to smile at the James Schamus/ Focus Features reference.

Hey Amanda!

I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this final season as a whole?
Sounds like you are enjoying it though.. so that's cool!

Believe it or not, I don't have the season dvds yet.  I did watch the  season from start to end when it was airing though.  So I guess that is why I am not panicking, lol.

What did you think of the final episode?  :)

I have heard SO MUCH about Glee but have not watched a single episode so far.

Will check out the Glee Thread.

Jennifer Beals is in The L Word? How cool! In fact, she's written a memoir about her experiences in the cast. Double cool!

Hi Lee,
Yes, Jennifer Beals was pretty much the main or central character for the 6 seasons (it's a group cast with multiple storylines, but she and her girlfriend are often highlighted).

Heya Milli!  All I can say, is I thought the final episode was peculiar.  It kind of left me cold.  But, I enjoyed watching the season... even though this one seems to have gotten bad reviews in general.  I'm surprised there wasn't some kind of flashback or tribute to Dana in some way during this final season.

I'll miss the L Word.  I think the series really had run its course, but still it was fun.

Re: the ending - I think they were trying to go for the "not a neat tidy ending because like is not perfectly packaged" angle, but I wish they'd closed the show properly for these characters that had been through so much together over 6 seasons.  The finale was weak.

But, yeah,  I'll miss the show too.  :)

I'd read that Ilene Chaiken was looking to carry on one (or few) of the L Word story lines (Jenny's death, Alice) into a new show called The Farm.  I don't think that idea ever took off.  I was looking forward to having another lesbian series like the L Word on TV once the show ended.
I guess we gotta wait and see.

Heya Milli!

It's so good to see you Bud!  :D

I like the idea of open endings or ambiguous endings in general.  I mean, hey, the open-ended ending of BBM is clearly a masterpiece (obviously a totally different league or caliber from the L Word... but still, it's a good example of an ambiguous ending).

However, I agree with you that the L Word ending didn't really necessarily do justice to all the characters and/ or storylines.  It was a lot to try to wrap up, definitely.  And, yes!  Now that you mention it, I remember the talk about The Farm.  I would love to see a whole show focused on Alice.  Alice is such a great character!  I don't know if I'd be so interested in a whole show focused on Jenny or her death.

Yeah, I'll miss the L Word simply for the fact that it focused on lesbian storylines... and it was often lots of fun.  But, as I said in my post here from a while back, I still think the show had run its course, so I feel like it was a good time for it to come to an end.
