:)
I just liked the delivery on each and every one of these lines.
And couldn't bear to put in some of the harder ones (Jack, I swear)... :'(
-
actually my favorite isn't there!
<--------look there
However, I did vote for "slop-bucket mouths"...I love that line!
-
Sending up a prayer... then Jack Fu*kin Twist.
-
I voted for the harmonica line (haha, and I'm the first one! It gets 100% of the votes!), but I really like Jack f*ckin Twist...and slop-bucket mouths...and prayer of thanks...and 43 miles...and need a push...and whiskey or somethin'......
Well, I was the first one when I voted, but not for replying here.
-
"'we're s'posed a guard the sheep, not eat 'em"
-
Paul, I voted for slop-buckets too! We are just like little peas in a pod tonight.
Hey Spook, could we ever so possibly move this beautiful and delightful poll to the Polling Place with the rest of the polls? If you don't want to, we shan't. But we could share it with our neighbors then and spread the joy.

Yeah, I agree.. how the devil did they miss "hunh"?!? ;D S'what I woulda voted fer...
-
The irony, the irony! Spooky is the Princeling of Hunh!
-
I voted for the "I'll take a cup of coffe, but I can't eat no cake just now", but I kind of like the "What?" when Jack looks at Ennis, when latter just told him his whole childhood history with more words than he'd spoken in who knows how long.. and so on ;D

right up there with Ennis's whhaaattt?
-
I voted for the whiskey line. ;D
Another fave: "You'll run them sheep off again if y' don't quiet down."
-
My favourite is absent too! I voted for Jack F*ckin' Twist, because I LOVE that line, but my actual favourite Ennis line is "You may be a sinner, but I ain't had the opportunity". Gah - so sexy! Lol.
-
hehehe...
Changed some responses to meet your Brokie needs!! ;D
-
Where is "You girls need a push or something?"
-
Where is "You girls need a push or something?"
Oh yeah - this is a fine one.
-
Where is the "Favorite Jack Twist" line poll? ;D I'd do it myself, but I gotta go to bed..

My very favorite line of the whole movie was the barely audible thanks Ennis gave Mrs. Twist as he held the shirts in the bag she had put them in. It was heart breaking.
-
Hard choice... I love the 'You may be a sinner', but picked 'What' because I can see myself in Ennis when he says that. And I love his look then!
-
My favorite isn't there:
"There ain't no reins on this one."
-
It's gotta be "What?" after he sees Jack smiling at him...followed closely by "...I don't know" in the motel---so many feelings travel across that face before he says it..

There is one line from Ennis in the book that didn't make it to the screenplay, and it is the only change that I wish hadn't happened.
During The Big Kiss after 4 years, Ennis whispers in Jack's ear: Little Darlin'
Oh I miss this line! To me, it reveals that Ennis' heart is involved and that the kiss isn't only about having a woodie. And think about what it would have meant to Jack! He arrives not knowing exactly what reaction he'll get from Ennis. The kiss goes a long way to relieve any anxiety he may have had, but it I had been Jack and heard "Little Darlin' " in my ear, I would have dissolved right then and there into the cement sidewalk! :P

Impish, that';s not fair...I think it's all right to vote for lines IN THE MOVIE that aren';t on the list (I did), but--we ALL miss a LOT of lines from the short story--and they just ain't there...
Gosh, what Ledger could have done with that line..he could have gotten the horses and his kids and Jack all into the same two words..he can do ANYTHING...
To make it fit with Movie Ennis, it wouldn't be your normal term of endearment line..remember, he..doesn't have any...(b'lieve they call that Tragedy).
Damn...forever damn.

No worries; that wasn't my vote (I voted for a line in the list above). I just mentioned it in this thread about lines from Ennis.

Exactly! If we had seen Ennis call one of his kids "Little Darlin'" -- or to Alma, or a much-loved horse as Annie says he does -- then it would have had all that much more impact when we hear it said in Jack's ear. Not being a man of words, it's the only term of endearment in Ennis' repertoire. Why wasn't that included?
-
I voted for "sending up a prayer of thanks." So touching, then so funny.

That one is my favorite too...I think it's one of (the only?) time we see Ennis happy and completely at peace. I think he's saying something about the importance of gratitude, but I tend to over-analyze :) I also love 'There ain't no reins on this one.' from the same scene.

None of these were my favorite line from Ennis, but I chose the Jack F*ckin' Twist line. I think my true favorite line was the one where he warns Jack about "this thing between us, grabs hold of us...and we're both dead." It's not the exact quote...but I love hearing him say it.
-
Hands down, "Jack fuckin' Twist." When Ennis steps out on the landing, looks down at Jack, and utters that line, I swear he's the happiest we ever see him!
-
The only things that Ennis Del Mar said to Jack Twist before Alma opened the door the 2nd time in 1967 in the book were "son of a bitch" and "little darlin." And, in the book, Jack ran up the stairs, two at a time, to the landing where Ennis was standing. Both of them said, "son of a bitch;" but, I don't think that they were calling each other that, they were just excited to see each other and were at a loss for words. IMO, "son of a bitch" could be interpreted as "Boy howdy! I never thought I would see you again and I sure am too excited to think of something else to say!"
While a modern Ennis might have used the "F-ing" word in talking to a friend he had not seen in several years, back in 1967, the country guys that I was around would have only used the "F-ing" word as the middle or first name of someone they hated with a passion.
-
Voted for the harmonica line, I just love it and Jack laughs and Ennis smiles. *sighs*
My favorite isn't there:
"There ain't no reins on this one."
I agree with you on this one too Impish!! It's not fair to vote for only one.
I also liked "Thats the most I've spoke in a year."
-
Has to be
"Jack, I swear..."
Just devastating.
-
"Sending up a prayer of thanks." Not only is it a totally happy and contented moment, but it shows just how much Ennis missed Jack and never expected to see him again. And then he implicitly says so to Jack! It's almost an outright endearment!
-
What a hard descicion. I would have picked "ain't no reigns on this one", too, but it's not there.
So I took "Huh?". I love, love love all of Ennis's huhs, huns, hmms and all those little sounds, his humming. It's so typical Ennis.
-
I picked "Huuhh?" Thanks to Ennis, I am saying this a lot these days!
Ennis is so cute!
My favorite Ennis quote is "You're gonna scare them sheep away with that harmonica playing" and then the cute smile he flashes to Jack just after he says it. :)
-
Hi David925 :)
I picked the whiskey line, but that one about the harmonica ("You'll run them sheep off again if y' don't quiet down") is my second favorite, too, not to mention the smile that follows it. *sigh*
"Hunh" is pretty great, too! 8)
-
chose this cause it shows how uncomplaining Ennis is, and how he chooses to keep the rules...one thing that keeps them hidden.
"'we're s'posed a guard the sheep, not eat 'em"
-
I picked the "coffeepot looking for the handle" line because it plays such a prominent role in one of my favorite BetterMost threads.
;)
And, it's sad that we could only pick one!
How did I miss this poll until now?
-
My fave is not on the list, so I voted for the harmonica line as a second best.
My fave line is when Ennis is talking to Jack, and says that all rodeo cowboys is fuckups. He then gives a glance to Jack, knowing the reaction.....it's sooooo funny the way he needles Jack.
-
My favourite Ennis line isn't on the list:
"He had balls on him big as apples."
