Title: What Is The Most Disgusting Thing You've Ever Ate?
Post by: David In Indy on March 10, 2011, 12:59:38 am
Have we done this before? If so, I couldn't find it. :-\

Another question - what is your least favorite food?

Okay, here I go... I remember my Mom making something called "Hawaiian Vegetables" once when I was 12 or 13 years old. She pour two or three cans of mixed vegetables into a bowl (carrots, peas, lima beans, corn, etc) and she poured maple syrup over it and put it in the refrigerator and chilled it. The mixed vegetables were basically "candied". The syrup had formed a crust on the vegetables and it was totally disgusting. I couldn't get it down and I remember Mom getting very angry with me because it was triggering my gag reflex! :P :P

My least favorite food is probably fish. Although I do like scallops, clams, oysters, lobster, shrimp, etc.... just as long as it is NOT a fish!

I'm not a big fan of lamb either. Especially when they put that mint jelly on it! Yucky! :P :P

A couple of times I've eaten a portion of toast or pnut butter sandwich before noticiing MOLD on the bread. Then I feel like I've probably ingested some of it and it makes me woozy. I feel disgusted for quite a while afterward.

chicken feet in the Dominican Republic - they serve them like French fries.  Yuk.

I can't eat broccoli.  Literally.  It makes me gag.  Smells exactly like rotting garbage, and the few times I've attempted to taste it, it tastes like I'd imagine rotting garbage would taste.

Inevitably, I've been given suggestions that it would be better with cheese on it.  Oh yeah -- like fresh dog poop or the fly-infested contents of some Dumpster would be tasty with just a sprinkling of grated Cheddar.

It would have to be jello.

Or the deep fried pickles at that place in Cheyenne, but at least they became palatable after you applied lots of beer.  ::)

Brussels sprouts are disgusting.
I also had the mold on bread experience (doesn't everybody? ;)) - yuck!

But the most disgusting thing I ever ate was liver. Ex boyfriend was sooo proud of his recipe, went grocery shopping and cooked a full meal only for me. I knew it was liver, but since it looked like a regular Schnitzel, I tried it nonchalantly. Worst taste ever!

Close second is kidney. I was so stupid to order steak and kidney pie in England, thinking of kidney beans! The first few bites were ok, I wondered briefly were the beans were, and then had a mouthful of kidney. :P

Most disgusting thing I ever had served to me was a rabbit brain served inside the upside down skull. The ears were used to prep the skull and keep it from rolling on the plate. I didn't eat it.. But I ate from the rest; the skull didn't come alone, it was considered to be the icing on the rabbit meat, so to speak. The whole thing was a very bony experience.

I can't think of anything that was really disgusting that I've been offered to eat.

I think the closest I've come to that was getting steak fries at a diner, and I put a fry into my mouth that wasn't cooked properly, and it had a very heavy "dirty potato" taste to it.

It almost made me gag.

The most disgusting thing I've ever had is surströmming

From Wiki:
Surströmming (pronounced [sʉ̌ːʂtrømːiŋ], "soured (Baltic) herring"), known colloquially as Scandinavian rotten fish, is a northern Swedish dish consisting of fermented Baltic herring. Surströmming  is sold in cans, which often bulge during shipping and storage, due to the continued fermentation. When opened, the contents release a strong and sometimes overwhelming odour, which explains why the dish is often eaten outdoors. A Japanese study has shown that the smell of a newly opened can of surströmming is the most putrid smell of food in the world, beating similar fermented fish dishes such as the Korean Hongeohoe or Japanese Kusaya.[1]

It's an tradition to surströmming in northern Sweden and when I worked there for a period of time, I was invited to a surströmming feast. I force fed myself a couple of bites, just to be polite and all.

the first pic shows surströmming in the can and the second pic how it's usually served: on bread with onion and potato.

I'll take the rabbit brain instead.

They look pretty harmless, but the thought of rotten fish and the desciption of the smell - uh, thanks no.

Yes, the main ingredient is blood.

I consider myself a fairly adventurous eater.  I love a smoked tongue every now and then, and sweetbreads (thymus gland) is a favorite.  However........

Andouillette.  I had this in France about 20 years ago.  I must have confused it with andouille, which is very different.  Andouillette is essentially pork intestines.  I believe the American equivalent is chitterlings or chitlins.  Truly disgusting.

BTW, I love broccoli in all preparations.  And I love brussel sprouts, particularly when they're sliced thinly and seared on high heat until charred.  However, use the stove fan, because it does smell up the house!

However, I dislike most other forms of cabbage intensely.  Go figure.

David, since you also asked for our least favorite food, here it is.  I know it's weird, but I DETEST mint in any food.  I find it overly strong and astringent.   It's tough because I like lamb, which is often contaminated with some kind of minty abomination.   I find I have to ask in restaurants about mint and tell them I'm "allergic".  I once had some Vietnamese beef thing that was studded with mint and, even though I tried to pick out the offending green stuff, I had to send it back.  YUK.

Of course, in these times, every dessert sports a mint garnish that I humbly ask my dining companion to kindly remove from my plate so I don't have to touch it.

Furthermore, I have fortunately discovered a wintergreen toothpaste that has no mint whatsoever.  Heaven.

I hope that's some sort of stuffing in there, and not the original, er, contents. ...

Reminds me of that rural Pennsylvania German delicacy pig stomach. (I think that may be what Jed Clampett called hog maw.) Pig stomach is generally stuffed with diced potatoes and sausage, and the whole thing is roasted. The stuffing isn't bad. I could never get my grandmother to add diced celery to the mixture, however.

Actually, wintergreen, as the name implies, is an evergreen shrub of the genus Gaultheria in the heath(!) family (Ericaceae) and not a mint at all .  Its oil, methyl salicylate, is related to aspirin.

I'm sure that my interest goes back to the memory that my father always had a roll of wint-o-green Lifesavers in his pocket.

Mint is in the family Lamiaceae and includes basil, sage and oregano.  Most mint grows like a weed, and is gross.

I've eaten quite a variety of foods that most Americans would consider "gross." Some of this is a by-product of my Southern heritage; some of this is because I'll eat anything once, twice if I like it...especially when I'm hungry.

- Chitlins are at the top of my "prefer not" list.
- I don't like runny eggs, but they're OK with blood pudding, head cheese, or scrapple.
- Hog's head cheese--and its relatives--are wonderful!!!! When I was about 5, I helped my great grandfather make some. It was an amazing experience. He brought the pig's head home from the butcher. It was wrapped in brown paper. Then he chased my brothers and me around the house with it. He handed me a boning knife, and instructed me to slice off anything that was not bone: skin, muscles, tendons & ligaments, eyes, ears (had to burn off the hair), nose, and tongue. I even sliced out the gums. Then we took hammers to the skull to break it down. He prepared a pressure-cooker with water, salt, and peppers. whole peppercorns, garlic and onions. I put all the flesh & bone into the pot, and we let it sit for a couple hours or so. Then we drained the mixture, and ran it through a meat grinfer several times. We poured the stuff into casserole dishes, put them in the fridge, and went to bed.

- Whenever I'm in a seafood restaurant, I ask which fish comes whole. I want the entire animal--head and tail included. People have gotten up and gone to the bathroom when I go after the eyes.
- Rattlesnake
- Opossum
- Raccoon
- Alligator
- Frog legs
- Black bear is damn good!!
- Tongue
- Fried cow brains over grits are great.
- Tripe
- Pan-seared kidneys with sautéed onions and green peppers over rice is one of my favorites. Same goes for chicken livers.
- Chicken gizzards
- Mountain oysters. Not bad, not great.
- Chicken feet a/k/a "scratchers" are great either deep-fried, or in a soup.
- Haggis
- Pork rinds!!! Domenicanos make the best. They're better than potato chips.

Someday I hope to go to Asia so I can try dog, cat, and deep-fried rat. Monkey brains are also a curiosity.

Of course, trailer trash is my favorite junk food.

Only a couple of days ago, I had a conversation about pig stomach on the Bochum thread (or Lynne's Germany thread). I'm not at all surprised that your family would make pig stomach. It's a traditional dish in the Palatinate. Our former chancellor Helmut Kohl was (in)famous for serving it to high-ranking international state guests, and the rest of Germany shook its head over it, because it's considered to be provincial and disgusting.

I never thought I would try it, the mere thought was yuck to me. But one day a friend made it, and it didn't look bad and it smelled even good, so I tried it. Since then I like pig stomach.

Too funny! You can't abide mint but you love raw oysters.  :P

Mint can be overdone (so can garlic), like the excessive amounts my grandmother used to make iced tea, but a little bit of mint in water can be very refreshing in the summer.

The relationship to aspirin no doubt explains why the old-timers used oil of wintergreen for toothache.

Milo, I'm listening to Annie Proulx's Bird Cloud and there is a funny anecdote about fish eyes! I've eaten all the above things you mention. Luigi and I had a ratlesnake appetizer when he came to D.enver one time. There are frog's legs in my freezer right now. Chicken livers are divine the way they prepare them in Italy. I definitely prefer my mountain oysters on the young side, not those steak-sized things. Kelda introduced me to haggis, and I'm so disappointed that it can't be obtained in the States, but maybe soon. New regulations are being pondered...perhaps in time for the Celtic Days at Estes Park this year!!

Later addition: Annie also raves about turbot cheeks!

That plant doesn't look like the wintergreen I know, Paul. That's why I guess you have to use the Latin name. There must be a dozen plants called wintergreen! You should hear Joan Allen breeze through all the Latin names in Bird Cloud. She's a real trooper (and thinker, too!)

Wow, some of these food items are really something.

I don't eat anything I find disgusting.   If I don't like the looks of something, I don't eat it.   Otherwise, I'll make myself sick thinking of it too much.    Cottage cheese once did that to me.  :)

I no longer eat red meat, but I do still eat chicken and fish, and I have cheated and had bacon on occasion (bad semi-vegetarian that I am).   I did that number I mentioned above on my mind so that I could give up eating meat.   I loooooooove oysters, Louisiana deep-fried especially, crawfish, and I love mint - it's a beautiful plant and I can't wait to have it come up in my garden this year.    Maybe the most exotic things I have ever eaten, for me,  are fish eggs of some sort, salmon I think and I like unagi (Japanese-style soy sauce-grilled [kabayaki] or smoked eel sushi, wrapped in nori [seaweed] - delish!), in fact seaweed is delicious; I tried alligator once (blech!), and I am curious about rattlesnake.   :)

That brings back memories - I remember walking with my grandmother as a child, past the local fishmarket -  and you'd see a carboard sign in the window advertising cod cheeks (and tongues) when they were available, at $x.xx/lb.   I would read the sign aloud to her and laugh, thinking of a fish having cheeks.  lol  This is the fleshy part of the "cheek" or jaw muscle of a fish, like a scallop.   I've never tried them, but I think my grandmother had.   For anyone who's interested, my husband says they are stringy.  :)

That's another thing I love about our grandparents and forebears; if they did eat a living creature, whether due to economics, necessity, or what, they ate everything, wasted nothing.   Nowadays, fish cheeks, tripe, chicken feet ... IDK.  :)  I haven't tried chicken livers and I would love to.

Speaking of Annie P., I loved her book The Shipping News.   Her description of fried bologna curling up in the pan gave me a chuckle.     I think she may have mentioned cod cheeks too.  What a great book.

Sorry to drift off topic a bit.  ;)

In reference to the various Scandinavian dishes mentioned on here, I remember hearing about something called Lutefisk (I think that was the name of it) and it is very popular in Minnesota and Wisconsin. They prepare the fish with lye. I can't remember the reason for doing it, but the fish is soaked in lye and then thoroughly washed in water to get the lye back out. But the fish retains a lye flavor which didn't sound very good to me. Are any of our Scandinavian friends familiar with Lutefisk? I heard about it on the Travel Channel.

That sounds interesting. I had no idea Italians ate them.

I think chicken livers (fegato di pollo) are fairly common in Italy.  I've had them in Tuscany, commonly as a spread on toasty bread.  Also, there's a northern Italian restaurant in Boston called Davio's that serves crispy chicken livers with a port/balsamic glaze that are so good, they could convert a liver hater.

I just saw that Davio's has a Philadelphia branch!  South 17th Street.  Highly recommended.

Also, there's a northern Italian restaurant in Boston called Davio's that serves crispy chicken livers with a port/balsamic glaze that are so good, they could convert a liver hater.

Oh, they sound delicious.   I am so there to try them!  Thanks!  :)

BTW, Milo, after reading your ambitious list of exotica, I'm wondering how your cholesterol is!

Yes, I know about Davio's but I have not been there yet.

My cholesterol is pretty good. I don't eat that stuff every day. Many of the items on the list fall into the "tried it once" category.

You're very welcome.  I used to think chicken livers were disgusting when I was a kid.  My mother used to cook them (to death  :P) and the smell was overwhelming.  She'd wrap them in bacon and eat them all by herself!

Now, I love them, especially after trying Davio's' version.

My mom loves Lutfisk. I can't stand it, it tastes soap. It's fish called Långa that is dried first. When you plan to serve it -christmas is the normal time to eat it - you put it in lye for some time, after that ypu bpol it and serve it with boiled potatoes, bechamel sauce with pimento and green peas.

That make sense.  Yeah, whereas I could eat oysters pretty frequently, I probably have sweetbreads only once or twice a year.

Surströmming is lovely!! Wonderful!! And the smell is rich and lovely too.......maybe sunday dinner, I have a can.....

I recently prepared Pork Kidneys and I was not impressed.  The recipe was from Jamie Oliver's latest book.  The kidney's didn't taste bad but preparing them was absolutely disgusting.  You have to remove the white sinewy parts which is not easy for a first timer.  I looked like Dexter after a kill.  Ewww.  Not worth the trouble, that's for sure.

I was in college, we were partying at a friends house. He did not have electricity in the back of the house because he had shot the TV with a pistol and it had messed up the wiring. About midnight we were S-T-O-N-E-D out of our minds and had the munchies real bad. My friend gets out this hot plate and cooks us up some sausage sandwiches which, in the process of devouring I notice, is still raw inside.

I don't know why I am even alive.

To each his own.  Whatever floats your boat.

Far be it from me to tell others what to eat.  That is the most centerist choice we have in
our lives.  If we cannot do that, there is nothing else we have choice over...

I salute those who can make choices, from all the parts of an animal that we usually discard.. That after all is what makes us better people... The finicky ones of us can not
do that. Unfortunately..

I've had heart before, and it wasn't bad. It's certainly not my FAVORITE cut of meat but like I said, it wasn't bad. I don't care for kidneys though.

I LOVE liver! Liver and onions is delicious. But it needs to be thoroughly cooked, with a crispy bark on the outside. There's nothing worse than a piece of RARE liver!

But I'll have to pass on the tongue. Although I agree with Janice. I admire those who do like it and can eat it. :)

I could never eat some of these things.  I did taste beef tongue
ONCE.  My mother was trying to convince me it was really good...NOT...  I took a bite, and spat it out.  I never tried her bright ideas again.
Some of the things she was good at trying to get the rest of us to eat were..  Tongue,  sweet breads, head cheese, and unfortunately
some other extremely "to me," disgusting delicacies.  My brothers and my dad too, if I remember right.  Were totally unreceptive..  If she
had those items for herself, she usually just bought a deli portion and ate it all herself...course she ate cold fried eggs from the fridge also..So maybe that should have been a clue?
   We obviously were adopted...?  heheheh

How did you prepare the lamb tongue?

Hey, sweetie!  :)  How did I prepare the tongue?  It's so strange!  I haven't eaten one since the late 80s (when I divorced) but I remember buying lamb tongues from the Berkeley Bowl market where they were sold on butcher's styrofoam lined up.  Can you image small tongues (about 7 to a flat) lined up and covered with what looked like Saran wrap?  People thought they were gross and felt sorry for the dear little lamb.  I felt guilty for eating them too, but that didn't stop me from cooking up a pot of lamb curry once a week.   ;D

To prepare them I boiled the tongues first before cutting them up into small chunks.  After the curry sauce was ready, I added the tongues and warmed them in the sauce so they could get a bit more tender.  Lamb tongues can be tough, but they are surely delicious.  I don't see them sold in the chain markets anymore.  I suppose if I wanted some I would have to visit a specialty market.  I miss them.

   We obviously were adopted...?  heheheh

Yes, I did the same thing when my mom cooked beef tongue for us when I was a kid.  I didn't like it at all.  I've been told that when we lived in Oklahoma I ate things like squirrel, rabbit (we continued eating rabbit after we moved here to California) frog's legs, beef brains sauteed in scrambled eggs and pickled pigs feet.  My father used to catch the small game, as he hunted to feed us.  At least we never ate possum.  The only "critters" I remember eating is rabbit and the pickled pigs feet.  Oh yeah, the beef brains are still a favorite but are almost impossible to find, probably because of mad cow disease.  I sure miss my beef brains and eggs: my favorite weekend breakfast.  By the way, I love head cheese, but I don't eat it very often.

It's been a while since I've found that online, I saved the pic, but not what the ingredients actually are.

Going off of my (faulty) memory, I believe it was an item off a children's menu.  Chicken nuggts, tater tots in a tomato sauce, with a hard-boiled egg for the head, olives for eyes, and the wings were deep-fried potatos, sorta like over-sized potato chips.

I posted it on DCF a while ago, and suggested it should be served at one of the member's commitment ceremony to his husband.

He promptly shot down the idea, dubbing the dish the "shit-chicken".

Sounds yummy!!!

Thanks for explaining, Marie!   :)

I may try and find some lamb tongues next time I go to the butcher.

I don't know if I ever told you all this, but back when I was 11 or 12 my mom gave my sister and I GREEN MILK for St. Patrick's Day. She put green food coloring in it but I just couldn't handle it. Nor could Susan. And I remember her feeling very insulted.

GREEN MILK?!!!

Poor mom! She really DID try though!

Oh dear me.  If I was forced to eat things that looked like this.  I would have to become a vegan.  I am sorry, I don't eat whole fish even.
The ones with the head left on.  I know....I am again showing my lack of class.  But there you are.. Uukk.  I think they even arranged that dish in the shape of some kind of an animal.  The only thing there that I could possibly eat;  the olive eyes..

Anybody have the famous Rachester Garbage Plate?

After a day of fun with the family, we decided to get a bite to eat at a Richmond area staple:  River City Diner.  One of the specialties at RCD is the Rochester Garbage Plate.  I got a Garbage Plate today.  My doctor would have coronary.  This thing had potato salad, cole slaw, fried potatoes, baked beans, chili, two hot dogs and cheddar cheese melted on top.  It contains enough calories and carbs to last the week.  Talk about a cholesterol disaster.  Anyway, I thought I would share this treat.

Hey, Sweetheart!  :-* Green milk?  Yeah, that seems pretty weird.  I absolutely love milk but if I saw green colored milk in a glass I wouldn't go anywhere near it.  I did have a green colored ice cream cone once on St. Patrick's Day, but a green ice cream cone (even though it tasted vanilla) is not really unusual.

Huitlacoche (or Cuitlacoche) is a fungus that infects corn kernels during the rainy season in Mexico.  It's also sometimes called Mexican Truffle.  I had it only once, as a pizza topping in Cuernavaca, and it was absolutely delicious!  Best pizza I ever had.  It's also available in a can but I haven't been able to find it here:

We used to live on a huge co-op farm.  One of their major crops was corn.  We enjoyed having all the fresh corn we wanted all year.  What
with eating it fresh picked in season.  Then we would put up in the freezer.  Meal sized amounts in plastic freezer bags.
However we always cut off the part that had that stuff on it.  It had a distinctly smutty smell.  Therefor it was called smut.  I never would have
thought to eat it though.  It may be a somewhat aquired taste.  Like blue cheese.

I would probably try that.  Even with my finicky mindset.  I do love Blue cheese.

I would never eat that stuff from the can.. It is down right scary looking.   Looks kind of like rabbit pellets in a sauce...guuh

Who thinks these things up? Did you ever wonder about that?

I mean SERIOUSLY, somebody at some point in time had to see that mess and say "Gee, I wonder what THIS tastes like!"

Maybe it tastes good, and maybe it doesn't. But that picture of the opened tin looks like someone just changed the oil in their car and drained it into that can! And then crapped in it!

Here is a shot of the can's full content  :o:

Here is a simple recipe:  Huitlacoche Quesadillas

1 tablespoon oil

1/4 onion, minced

1 garlic clove, minced

2 serrano peppers, minced

1 (7-ounce) can of huitlacoche

6 to 8 (6- to 7-inch) corn tortillas

1 (12-ounce) package Oaxaca cheese, sliced

1. In a medium skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat until hot. Add the onions, garlic and minced peppers and cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are softened, 6 to 8 minutes. Stir in the huitlacoche and heat until it begins to bubble, stirring frequently, then remove from heat and set aside.

2. Assemble the quesadillas: Heat a tortilla on the stovetop (this can be done directly on the stovetop or using a comal, or griddle pan). Add sliced cheese to one-half of the tortilla, and when it has melted, add a scoop of the huitlacoche mixture. Fold the tortilla over and hold in a warm place until all of the quesadillas have been assembled. Repeat with the remaining tortillas. Serve immediately.

Each serving: 455 calories; 25 grams protein; 22 grams carbohydrates; 3 grams fiber; 31 grams fat; 17 grams saturated fat; 76 mg cholesterol; 2 grams sugar; 478 mg sodium.
