Title: Striking Out

Well, here is a new section of my blog where I intend to talk about my joining a gay bowling league and my successes (or lack thereof  ) in the sport of bowling.

What will be posted here?  Discussions on my practice sessions, tracking of my scores to see if there's any improvement, and information on the league itself.

;D

This is the league I've located here in NJ, only about a 15 minute drive from my house.

The North Jersey Gay & Lesbian Bowlers

http://www.njglb.org/

I haven't officially joined yet, as I have to review all the paperwork for fees and such.  If they accept debit cards, then I'll wait another week or so, as I'm getting a new debit card sent to me, my job just switched our cards from Visa to Master Card.

I do like this rule from their website.  ;D

7. NJGLB is a “Fun” League
Music is played during our bowling sessions; in fairness to all teams and all bowlers, each Team will be assigned an evening to supply the music (“The Team of the Week”). No Team of the Week will be selected on “Fun” nights, during which the Party Committee will supply the music.

“Fun” nights are the two nights throughout the season during which games bowled will not count toward league standings. These nights do not count towards individual averages and Team standings. This includes the first night of league, and one “event” night to in October and organized by the Party Committee during the Season.

You know when it's my team's night, I'll push for an 80s night!  Can you say, "Nena & Freestyle"?

And now, onto the scores so far!

My first practice session a week ago, I only played three games.  yesterday I played six.  I plan to keep a running tally of my scores over the next few months, until the league starts, to see if I can see improvement.

                 3/12/11    3/20/11

Game 1          109            96
Game 2          121           115
Game 3          146           110
Game 4                          115
Game 5                          112
Game 6                          129

I can see that my skills have really decreased in my time away from bowling!  Ugh, I used to be able to hit 200 at times.  I really need to get myself back up there.

Good luck!!

Good luck with the training, Chuck!  I love how you've planned everything out and set goals and all.   8)

What a great blog title, Chuck!  The irony of it is not lost, that's for sure.

I've only bowled once in my life.  First time I threw a ball about 20 (ahem!) years ago, I got a strike.  Figured I'd just stop right there, and remember the sport fondly, retiring as a champion after one throw.

I would say that your winning personality and your love of music are right up this league's alley, ha-ha.  Best of luck to ya!

Practice may not make perfect, but it will help you improve your scores.

You have what it takes, and what's more important, you'll have fun at this, I know it.

Oh dear.

 ::)

I am really inconsistent.  My first game was HORRIBLE, a score of 89!  Not only that, I dropped the ball twice!  I think that with recent weight loss, my fingers have slimmed, and therefore slip off my hand before I intend it too.

I'm going to keep practicing with this ball, but since starting September I'll be bowling twice a week, I'm thinking that in a few months, I'll buy new equipment.  I think a new ball, bag and shoes are in order, and be used properly.

And now, the scores for today's games.

89 - 113 - 125 - 132 - 117 - 118

My first practice session a week ago, I only played three games.  yesterday I played six.  I plan to keep a running tally of my scores over the next few months, until the league starts, to see if I can see improvement.

but they actually drill the holes after you purchase the ball so that it's customized for your grip.  Or at least that's my experience with my Dad's bowling career.  Chuckie's in the big leagues now!!

You are correct Lynne.

When I had my current ball drilled, they put my fingers into a device that measured the depth and width of what I would need.  I found that rainbow one online.  I'm hoping they have something like that in a store somewhere.  I'd hate to think what the shipping would be for something like that, and I don't want to give measurements online of the drilling.  I'd like that to be done in person.

"Improved"?  I think not.  Candlepin involves actual skill.  As opposed to tenpin, where anyone can hurl that big-ass ball and score at least a 150.  Oops.

Yeah, Chuck, get the rainbow ball.  It'll distract everyone from, well, you know.

I'm not sure that I see any improvement in my "consistancy", so I'm hoping that I will see that somewhere down the road.  I've only been practicing for a month, I realize it will take more time.  I'm just not a very patient person.

And now, the scores for today's games.

125 - 134 - 103 - 101 - 121 - 125

Just like my first week, I was able to score over 100 on each game.  I'm happy about that.  ;D

I didn't drop the ball any games either, so I was please with that as well.  I do think I won't wait as long to get the new bowling equipment.  At least this way, I can get used to the new ball.  I think I'll get a lighter ball as well.  I believe the one I have is a 16 pound ball, I'm thinking maybe a 14 pounder will be better.

Bowling update for today.

I think overall I did  better today than last week.  My second game was not good, as I was distracted by another bowler who was throwing ball after ball after ball.  He was rotating three different balls at once, hitting frame after frame after frame.

And now, the scores for today's games.

127 - 93 - 133 - 124 - 116 - 132

Again, I didn't drop the ball, so I was very happy about that.  I do need to focus more.  There were times I was just throwing the ball, instead of looking at where I needed the ball to go, and being attentive.   I can see that the average is starting to creep up a bit.  ;D

                 3/12/11    3/20/11  3/27/11  4/3/11    4/3/11

Game 1          109         96            89       125     127
Game 2          121       115           113      134      93
Game 3          146        110           125     103      133
Game 4                       115           132     101      124
Game 5                       112           117     121      116

Chuck, your table of scores is starting to be really helpful for analysis by now.  I'd say you did have a good day.

As for focusing, that's good that you diagnosed the problem.  You do need to aim for where you want the ball to go on a particular throw, depending on what pins are left.  But I can understand how distracting that other bowler must have been!

Bowling update for today.

I think overall I did  better today than last week.  My first three games went well, the two games in the middle were a let down, but I recovered with the last game, and had my best game then.  It was the first week that I had three games that were 140 or higher.  ;D

And now, the scores for today's games.

113 - 142 - 140 - 88 - 100 - 147

My focus was improved this week, and I was able to get a few spares when needed.  In my last game, I marked 4 frames in a row, which hasn't happened before when I started this.  I'm happy with that.

                 3/12/11    3/20/11  3/27/11  4/3/11    4/3/11   4/3/11

Do you pay per game or per hour?

This wekend, I went bowling for the first time since 1995. :o
For some years, we used to go regularly with friends, but it all stopped when I got pregnant the first time. Anyway, when we were bowling I was always the only female and always the one with the lowest scores. But it didn't keep me from having fun. I stared with scores around 60 and through practise, I went up to an average of  - I don't know, but I remember that I considered everything under 100 a bad game and everything close to or even over 120 as a victory.

Last Saturday, my oldest had her birthday party at the bowling lane. My first game was 69, the second 90. Then I left the teens to enjoy themselves without mom.

Now I'm hooked again and really want to get back into bowling. The bad thing is, at our bowling place you pay per lane per hour. This is good when you're a group (like last Saturday), but bad when you're alone or only two people. For three hours, I paid almost 90 $ for lane and shoe rental (without drinks and food, they were extra of course). I don't see me paying that kind of money on a regular base.

Maybe I should look into Kegeln, which is the German version. It's nine-pin bowling with smaller balls which have no holes. Always drove me crazy, I never could get the ball right when there are no holes to grab it.

Hiya Chrissi,

The way the alley I go to works, from 8:00am to 11:00am on Sundays, you can bowl for up to 6 games, for $11.00, and that includes the cost of the shoes.

I came here today to update, and I realized I never put last week's scores up!

:o

Maybe because I was so pissed at the scores!   Remember, I didn't bowl two weeks ago because it was Easter, so by the time I got back to the alley, it was two weeks without practice, and I was sure the scores would reflect that.

And did they ever!!!!

112 - 122 - 90 - 109 - 92 - 138

As you can see, I had two games where I scored under 100, and two games where I barely crossed the 100 mark.  I was not happy!  I did take comfort in the fact that I was able to rebound in my last game and have my best game of the day.

And now, here I am with today's scores.

122 - 122 - 112 - 117 - 110 - 126

While not happy with the socres over all (especially since a few weeks ago I was getting as high as a 147) I was happy to see that I was able to get back to having no games under 100.  I consider game #5  (score of 110) a personal victory.  The game started off horribly, and I got far into the game (8th frame) without any marks.  I had no strikes or spares at all.  I walked off the lane after the 7th frame, took a few breaths, and did my best to focus.  I was able to strike and spare in frames 8, 9, & 10.  Which made me break the 100 mark.  It was my lowest score, but I fought for it, and was very determined to have no games below 100 after last weekend's scores.

After last week's average of 110, I'm glad to see it going back up to 118 again.  ;D  I also sent an email to the bowling league, and got a very nice reply.  They are remodeling their website, but they're very excited to have me as a new member, and invited me to see them bowling next Tuesday.  I believe I'll go and see what everyone is doing, and see what the competition is up to.

lol

Next weekend, I'll be going to a pro shop to see about ordering the ball, bag and new shoes.  ;D

The new ball sounds exciting, Chuck.  Will it be the multi-color one that you showed us a picture of?

Glad your scores improved this week, too.  Sounds like you worked your way out of a not-too-good situation with your mental concentration in game #5.  That's important to be able to do that, so congrats.   :)

Congrats on not having a game <100!
The above sounds exciting, having a look at the team and how they play, and getting all pro with your own shoes and ball.
Have fun! :)

BTW, what do people do with old balls (bowling balls, take your mind out of the gutter! ;))?
Do shops take them back for recycling? Or do you throw them away? I just picture a poor garbage collector, cursing over a trash bin containing two or three old bowling balls.

Chrissi, that's not something I have thought about.  I believe that one can "donate" the ball to a local bowling alley, and it becomes a "house ball" that someone who doesn't have their own bowling ball will use.

And now, here I am with today's scores.

115 - 125 - 113 - 98 - 103 - 127

Slow and steady wins the race.  LOL   I keep telling myself that.

Once again, not that thrilled with the overall scores, but happy that I had 2 games that went over the 120 mark.  I am very pissed at the 98 in there.  That game was awful.  The pins would not break for me.  I was hitting the pins in the right spots, but never a strike, and then I would miss the spares.  And when I did get a spare, I would get only 1 or 2 pins on the next ball, which really took my score down.  One thing that I did notice was that the ball felt lighter than usual today, so I'm assuming that I've adjusted to throwing that weight ball down the alley.  I was debating getting a lighter ball, but today it felt like it wasn't such heavy weight to be holding.

The practice is doing you good, if you're getting used to the weight of that ball.

When you order your own ball, will it be the multi-color one?

Well, I was at the Pro Shop yesterday, and I ordered the ball, shows and bag.  However, I didn't get the gay pride ball that I wanted.

I showed it to the guy who ran the shop, and it wasn't one that he could get in stock.  He told me that if I ordered the ball myself ($160.00) I would need to bring it to him to drill, which would be an additional charge, as well as the shoes, bag, and the taxes and shipping charges for the ball, I could end up spending over $250.00 all said and done.

I found a ball that he could get, and while not gay pride, it's flashy.  LOL  Purple, orange, and yellow swirls.  Three of the pride colors.  LOL  I also got the shoes and bag, and All totaled was only $150.00, one hundred less that what I would've spent if I had gotten the rainbow ball.

And now, here I am with today's scores.

111 - 96 - 108 - 134 - 114 - 121

Once again, I had a game that was under 100.  I was not pleased.  I just couldn't focus for some reason, and my score suffered because of it.  On the positive side, my highest score was 134, it's been 2 weeks since I've been able to break the 130 mark, so I'm glad to see that.

I also made a killer shot in that high score game!

This is the best way I can think of to describe the shot.

After I threw the first ball of the frame, I knocked 7 pins down.  I had left the 1, 5, and 10 pin standing.  A difficult spare to pick up.  Usually, you can knock over the one pin, which falls to the side, leaving the 5 pin standing, and the 10 pin is too far back from the 1 pin to be knocked over.    I still don't know how I did it, but I hit the 1 pin so that it shot backwards into the 5 pin.  The 5 pin shot over to the left, taking out the 10 pin.  Great spare!

Too bad about not getting the rainbow ball, that was so impressive.  But the one you did get, with colored swirls, sounds really neat, too.  You'll have to post a picture after of it's after it's all finished.

Got a call from the Pro Shop as I was leaving work, my bag, shoes and new ball were in as of this afternoon, and all ready to go.

;D

I can't wait to break them out on Sunday!  ;D

I'm also curious as to what will happen with my scores.  The ball is lighter, so it will have an affect on the way I throw it down the lanes.  I wonder if it will go up, or down.

Either way, I'm psyched to try them all out!

Here is the new bag.  Behind it, you can see the old bag.

In either case, it's great! I like the orange-yellowish-greenish tones melting, mixing, swirling. :)

So today was the first time for me bowling with the new equipment.  The shoes felt stiff for the first game, but after that, they felt very comfortable.

However, I am going to need to "relearn" my bowling.  LOL  I had many highs and lows for these six games.  It was weird.  Also, I need to get the thumb hole redrilled.  My thumb fit into it, but after the games, I had a blister on my thumb.  I need to get the hole enlarged a bit, so I won't have recurring blisters there.

And now, here I am with today's scores.

98 - 120 - 87 - 127 - 104 - 148

Two games that were under 100, and the last game was my highest score since I started practicing again.  Game #3 (score of 87) the first three frames were grand total of 11.  :o  The last game (score of 148) I had a turkey.  For those who don't bowl, that means I got three strikes in a row.

So, as you can see, I still have consistancy issues.  I'm hoping that as I adapt to the new ball and shoes, the scores will steadily improve.

;D

Ok, time for my update!

I did bowl last weekend while in Boston, but it was only two games.  Since I usually bowl six games when I practice, I decided to throw out last week's scores.  Getting back to my usual lanes felt strange at first, and the first game reflected that.  I managed to get back into the groove of bowling there, the scores went up.

Here are this week's scores.

93 - 114 -137 - 126 - 136 - 123

Inconsistancy is still the name of the game, but it's slowly improving.  I managed to get double strikes in the third game, so I was happy about that.

Well, it was another mixed bag today.  ::)  I'm not sure about what happened in my last game, where I only managed to score a 79.  However, I had two games that were in the 130 range, and once again, I managed to turkey today (3 strikes in a row).  The only thing that I can think of is that I didn't sleep as well as I would've liked last night for being out late, and I was tired by the last game.

Here are this week's scores.

110 - 106 - 105 - 139 - 133 - 79

Still plagued with inconsistancy, but I'm feeling more comfortable as I bowl, so that's a good thing.  The ball seems very natural to handle.

Ok, time for my update!

Well, it was another mixed bag today.  ::)  I started off strongly, and then the second game took a huge tank.  I was not amused.  I did discover that I am a better bowler if I'm "easier" on the ball.  The second came this week, I was really trying to power the ball down the lane, and I ended up getting a number of gutter balls, and that game I had no marks.  For those who don't know, a "mark" is either a spare or strike.  If you want to score higher, you need to mark in the frames.  When I bowled easier, I tended to hit more spares.  In fact, the last game of the night, I got 5 spares in a row.

Here are this week's scores.

122 - 74 - 114 - 119 - 106 - 131

Interesting observations about powering the ball versus being "easier" on it.  I don't have the strength to power the ball, but I can understand how being easier with the throw might give you better control and aim.

It's good that you continue to figure these things out and give yourself "learning feedback."

Then there's always break-bowling:

Yeah, I think I need to learn how to do that.

I'm not posting my scores this week, as they were so shitt.   >:(  Out of 6 games, I only broke 100 twice.  I haven't bowled that shitty in years.  I have no idea what happened, why it happend, or what I was doing wrong.  It was brutal.

On to next week.

Finally back with an update!!

Here are this week's scores.

98 - 94 - 101 - 99 - 92 - 101

As you can see, not that great, however, they are all very close in range.  I'm starting to get some consistancy.  Recent weeks have had me have scores of 110 or so, and then the next one will go down to 75.  I thought that was more frustating than not breaking 120.

Today when I started to bowl, I had a few rough frames in the first game, and then the next two lanes were taken by some bowlers who are able to get into the 200 range.  They watched me bowl, and gave me some advice/tips.  Even took the time to come over to my lane and showed me different stances, the proper way to aim, and how to throw the ball.  By taking their advice, I was able to get some consistancy.  The scores were not high, but I left the lanes feeling more confident, and I'm hoping that now it's just a matter of practicing, while utilizing what they taught me today.

Well, I'm so glad that those two guys were there last weekend when I bowled.  Listening to their advice really seems to have helped!!

Here are this week's scores.

105 - 148 - 89 - 107 - 148 - 169

As you can see, much improvement!!!!  This week was the first time since the end of June that I only had one game with a score under 100.  It's also the first time since the end of May that I managed to match my prior highest score of 148.  Not only did I do that twice, I beat it, and got a 169.  I also managed to "turkey" (three strikes in a row) twice.  ;D

It's really boosted my confidence, and I feel like I had a lot more control over the game.  I also had my first contact with the gay bowling league, our "meet & greet" will be on Tuesday, August 23rd.

Before I get to this week's scores, I have other bowling news to talk about.

The VP of the gay/lesbian bowling league reached out to me, and asked if I wanted to meet with him for a practice session.  The lanes where the league meets has open bowling every Friday night, from 6 to 9, so we agreed to meet at 6 for a few rounds of bowling.

His name is Mead and he was a really nice guy.  We chatted back and forth and bowled about 5 games,  I didn't keep careful track of my scores, and didn't intend to add them into my averages this week.  We bowled 5 games, and 4 of them were between the 120-130 range.  Mead told me that the league average tends to be about 130, so I'll fit right in.  He also said that with my attitude I will also fit in, it's just a matter of getting me on a team that has the same "attitude" about bowling.  I'm there for fun, and he said they have a few bowlers who are very competitive, so he wants to make sure I get on a more relaxed team.

Here are this week's scores.

92 - 126 - 85 - 129 - 140 - 119

Consistancy is started to develop, which I'm happy about.  The first and third games, I could feel that I wasn't as focused as I needed to be, so I need to concentrate on improving that.

No turkeys this week, but I did manage to get doubles a few times, so I was pleased with that, and did get more than a few spares.

Hiya friends!

Last night was the first night of the league, the "meet and greet" where everyone just basically bowled a few games and got to see who fit in with who the best.

It was a lot of fun, and I got to meet some really nice guys.  Ron, Mead, Don, Rich, Pete, Victor, Ed, Larry.  We all got along well and had a few good laughs.  According to one of the guys last night, they have enough people for about 29 teams, so we'll pretty much have the whole building to ourselves when we bowl.

;D

Last night's scores weren't much to talk about (103 & 88) but I felt very relaxed, and I seem to have fit in rather well.

He also said that with my attitude I will also fit in, it's just a matter of getting me on a team that has the same "attitude" about bowling.  I'm there for fun, and he said they have a few bowlers who are very competitive, so he wants to make sure I get on a more relaxed team.

Sounds good, Chuck.  Hope you enjoy your new team.   :)

Ok, where to start? ? ? ?

Ok, I spent some time online last night, and then made my way to the bowling alley for the first night of competition.

I did OK, my 3 scores for the night, out of a possible 300 were 115, 115 & 125.  My team mates are Pete Cullen (partnered), Frank (single, but not my type) and we played against some lesbians, Christine, Jen and Linda.

Big compliment of the night, Jen thought was I was 32, not 42.  I told her she was my new best friend.

It was a fun night, but very late.  I didn't get home until about midnight.

All in all, it was a really good time.  Had a lot of fun, a lot of laughs, some good conversation, and looking forward to meeting other bowlers as time goes one and more games are played.

Next week we have to be there an hour earlier than usual (8:00 instead of 9:00) to discuss the bylaws, events and such.

Hiya everyone!   *waves*

I haven't been updating my scores here because I haven't had time to practice.

One Saturday I was out late, so I didn't practice, another was Labor Day weekend, another was Hurricane Irene, and last week I was too tired.

I'm determined to come back this Sunday.

Last night's game was fun.....my team (the Alley Gators) played against three guys, Jason, John, & Michael.  Had a lot of fun, and just chilled out and laughed.

All three games were over 110 points, high score was a 145.  ;D

I think I became team captain as well last night.   It was by default!  LOL   Next week is a "captain's meeting" where all the captains will get together and vote on the bylaws.  One of my teammates (Peter) was away this week so he doesn't know about the meeting, and my other teammate (Frank) has an appointment next week.  He'll be here to bowl, but can't make the meeting, so that leaves me.

Hiya friends!

;D

Well, last week at bowling was a mixed bag.  I had a game that was about a 120, one that was about 110, and then an 85.  Ugh.

Today at practice, I did better.  I had 2 games that were in the 140 range, and one game that was a 157.  I'm hoping that I can repeat this Tuesday night.

;D

overall, the league is going well, and I'm enjoying myself.  It's good to go out with on a regular basis and meet new friends.

Well, another week of bowling is done.

;D

I had one bad game (96) but my other games were in the 120 range, which isn't bad.  My league high score as of last week was a 141, which really pleased me.  This week, my teammate (Pete) scored a 213.  ;D

Foot in mouth moment came for me during the second game, when I bowled two strikes back-to-back.  As I picked up my ball, one of the guys on the team I was playing against said to me " If you bowl like that again, I'll have to hurt you."  He was about 6 inches taller than me, very fit, about 54 years old.  He (of course) was kidding, so I just smirked and turned to bowl.

As I was standing there, I saw out of the corner of my eye that he was standing behind me, so I turned to look at him.....he tried to look intimidating, and without thinking, said to him......

"Oh please......as if I haven't had guys who are bigger than you come up from behind."

I turned to bowl and then it hit me how it came out.  :o   I then heard him say to everyone else "Well how would he know that?"

So I started to laugh, threw the ball, and missed the strike by one pin.  I turned to him and he says "See, that's what you get for lying like that!"

Hiya everyone!

Bowling updates......this weekend was a bowling tournament that took place between members of my league, and other gay leagues.

We played six games in total.  Out of the six games, I had three that were below (but near) average, and three that were above average.  It was a good time.

;D

Today I met with a few guys and practiced today, I had no games today that were under my average, so I was pretty happy about that.  I'm hoping this carries through to Tuesday night.

Well, the new season kinda sorta started last week.  LOL

I say it that was as we bowled, but it was only for "fun", scores were not kept.

This week is the official first night of scoring, as well as a team meeting to accept the by-laws and rules and such.

Once again, I'm team captian.   ;D

Well well well!

First night of the new season of bowling started yesterday.

There are some guys who wear "gay themed" t-shrits, so I got a few for myself.  This is what I wore last night.

We met at the lanes an hour early, had our first meeting to review the by-laws, and moved on to bowling.  My team decided we needed a name change.  We are three 'hairy' guys who all wish we bowled better () , so we went from being the "Alley Gay Tors"  to "Bearly Bowling".

My average lurks around the 120 area.  Last night I opened with a 135, middle game was a 120, and my last was a horrifying 75.

:o

Oh well, only the first night of the season, no where to go but up!

Speaking of T-Shirts, here is what I wore this past Tuesday.

Got a WHOLE bunch of laughs!  One of the lesbians saw it and said, "Well that's good, someone should!"

My average that carried over from last season was a 115.  My three games on Tuesday were 114, 145, & 149.  I was very happy about that.

We also beat the team we played against, and got all 7 points as well.  ;D

Wow!  Over a month since my last post here, so I guess that tells you how the bowling has been going!

Not much to say about it, some good games and some very bad games!  Last week's low was a 91!

:o

Last night was very different, as my entire team was "on" all night, my average is a 120, and my lowest game was a 125, and a high of 146, so it went well, and we won all three games, which hasn't happened in a while!

;D

I hope we can carry this on through the following weeks!

Well, after missing three weeks of bowling (3 weeks ago - hurricane,  2 weeks ago - gas & power issues...league cancelled,  last week - London trip) I was very sure that I would have a horrible night.  It went rather well.

My average is currently a 122.  My first game was a 106, second game was a 122, and third was 130.  Can't complain.  I even managed to get a turkey (three strikes in a row) which was fitting the week of Thanksgiving!

Ahhhh.....the feeling of success is soooo nice!

 ;D

Last night was not a spectacular night for me.  Out of the three games, only 1 was above average, the other two were below.

However, as a team we were great!  Out of the three games, we won two, and took wood!  ;D  For the non bowlers out there, wood refers to pins.  If a team "takes wood" it means they beat the other team by knocking over the most pins over all three games.

Last season our team finished is 2nd to LAST place.     This year, we're currently in 4th.   :o ;D

Next week it is my team's week to supply the music, I'm thinking a night of  One Hit Wonders.  And no, Nena will not be in the rotation.  I did a theme last season called "Cover Me" where I played an original song, followed immediately by a cover version, so "99 Luftballons" was already on that set list.

Well I wasn't quite sure what to expect last night.

The week prior, my team lost 1 of the three games, and we lost wood, so we only got 4 out of a possible 7 points.  I thought for sure we'd fall out of the top 10, but when we got the standings last night, we were in 8th place.

Then I saw we were bowling one of the higher ranked teams, and I thought we were toast!  However, it turned out quite the opposite.

With our first game, I bowled my average, and Pete and Frank bowled above their averages.  We beat the other team by 19 pins.

With the second game, Pete was on fire.  He bowled 5 strikes in a row, and ended up with a score of 202, his first 200 game in a long time.  Frank was again above average, and I bowled a 145, 25 pins above my average.  Pete's 202 game psyched out the other team, and they lost focus, and we beat them by 62 pins.

With the third game, both Pete & Frank were above average again, I was below, but not by much (I 'under' bowled by 11 pins) but because they had lost the first two games, the other team was disheartened, and underperformed.  Had they fought back hard, they could've won because the third game was not my team's best, and it ended up being closer than the first, we won by only 9 pins.

When everything was totaled up, we got all 7 points, winning the three games and getting total wood, beating them by 90 pins in total.

;D

Good morning!

 ;D

Bowling was a good time last night.  I wore the crown hat that I picked up at Party City for my birthday, and had a few laughs.  Two of my friends gave me a Visa gift card as well, so that was great.

 ;D

Ah, yes, actual bowling.  We bowled a team that was pretty evenly matched against us with scores.  In fact, they had a higher handicap than we had, so it made it a little more difficult for us to win.   Our first game we beat them by 40 pins, our second game we beat them by 20 pins, and the last game one of players from the other team got lucky and scored big.  I did really well the last game too (150) but my team lost by only 4 pins.   Over all we beat them by 56 pins total.

Out of the possible 7 points we got 5.

;D

Before last night's game we were in 6th place in the league.  I'm not sure what our placements are now.

Another night of bowling down.  ;D

My team did well last night, on a personal level, it was more of the same for me, with a pattern that seems to have set in.  I'll have one great game, one game on average, and one game below average.  Last night was no exception.  My first game was 158.  My average is about 120, so that was 38 pins above average.  My second game was just above average (125) and my last game was 97.   >:(   Ending up with 23 pins below average almost wiped out my 38 pins above average game, so that sucks.

On the plus side, my two teammates bowled really well.  Frank had a high of 178, and Pete had a 212.  At the end of the night we had won all three games, and taken all 7 points.

The week of 1/8 we were in 6th place in the league (out of about 20 teams), and the week of 1/15 we were still 6th place.  I'm hoping we can move up a space or two and be in the top 5 teams.  This is a real improvement given that last season, we were second to last place.

Hello everyone!

Bowling was really a mixed bag last night.  There's no other way to describe it. ::)

It's like everyone decided to be awful, all at once.

The lanes will announce when someone gets over 200 as a score, we have more than a few of those each Tuesday, but last night we barely had any announcement.  I'm not sure what was happening, but whatever it was, was happening to everyone.  Even the best bowlers on the league were missing shots, getting splits, it was very odd.

Our first game was a tie.  Ties generally don't happen in bowling, but somehow, we managed it.     The second game we lost by 7 pins  >:( and the third game we won by 33 pins.  It was a very close match, in the end we took one game, 1/2 of one game, and wood, so out of 7 points, we got 4.

Ahhhh.....the feeling of success is soooo nice!

 ;D

The feeling of success turns to failure so quickly!

My team started off great last night, we won the first game, and my high was 153.  After that game, we crashed and burned.  I dropped to a 124, which was 4 pins above average, but my teammates bowled below average.  To make it worse, the team we were playing stepped in major shit!  Two of them bowled 200+ games, all three of them were 30 pins above average.  There was no way for us to catch up.

The third game we lost as well, but only by 25 pins.

end result, out of 7 points, we only won 2.

Oh well, there's always next week.  I'm hoping we don't drop down too far, we've been #6 for the past 6 weeks or so.

Well, the good news is that we were still in 6th place after last night.

The bad news is the way we bowled last night, I doubt we'll still be there next week.

It was like none of us could get our shit together, we lost all three games, and all 7 points.   >:(

Bowling was a mixed bag last night, but overall I feel ok about it.

Just as I had feared, we dropped from 6th to 8th place, so we're still in the Top 10.

Last night we played againsted one of the Top 5 teams, so I wasn't expecting much.  LOL  We lost 2 of the three games, but the second game that we won, we beat them by almost 100 pins!   :o  Because of that, we only lost total pins by about 25 pins in total.

I had a high game of 153, so that was good for me.   ;D  While we didn't win, it was a definite improvement over the last two weeks.

LOL

Well, my team is slowly losing ground.  Ugh!

I'm sure next week we'll be out of the top 10.

Time for a bowling update!

 ;D

It wasn't a great night for me.  I bowled at my average, or maybe a little higher.  In truth that's better than it's been the past few weeks, but I'd like to be higher.

However, we played one of the top teams, and they were way off their game last night!  All of them bowled below average, and we beat them all three games, and even "took wood", meaning we knocked down more pins than they did, beating them by almost 300 pins in total.

:o
Title: Re: Striking Out
Post by: CellarDweller on March 13, 2013, 08:14:35 am
After last week's big win, we've rebounded back up in the standings to #7.

Last night my first two games were within my average.  I bowled a 123 and 121.  I'm not sure what I stepped in for the last game, but I ended up getting a 161.  ;D

My team won all three games, beating the other team by almost 100 pins.  I'm hoping this puts us into the Top 5 teams.

My best moment of the night came in the 10th frame of the first game (when I finished 123).  I had a score of 93, and I was the last bowler, my team behind by 20 pins.  I managed to turkey out in the 10th frame (get three strikes) and bumped my score up to 123, and helped us to beat the other team by 10 pins.

Good morning bowling fans!

 :D

I'm happy to announce that Bearly Bowling moved back up to #6 in the standings (or as we call it, the best of the worst) and last night we won all three games.

They made us work for it, though!  LOL  They were about the same skill level as we were, so the handicaps were only had a 9 pin difference.  It meant we really needed to bowl well.

Each team bowled about their average, so it was a very close game, and at the end, we only beat them by 45 pins, which is actually a very close match.  When averaged, we only won each game by 15 pins.  If the other team had gotten two more strikes each game, they would've won.

Not sure where we'll be in the standings when they're posted next week, but I hope we at least maintained our position.

Perhaps I need to wake at 4am and go to a rally every Tuesday.

I expected to be tired and bowl like crap on Tuesday, after rising at 4 to get the train to DC, spend the morning protesting, walking around DC, train ride home, and then attempting to bowl.  However, my first game was my average, and my two other games were both 20 pins above average.  ;D

The night for the team was a mixed bag.  We lost the first two games, but won the third game, and won that one by such a big spread that we even won wood.  Out of 7 possible points we won three, the other team four.

According to the standings last week, we moved up to the #4 team.  ;D  Not sure where we'll be after Tuesday's games, but we'll find out next week.

After last week's mixed performance, we dropped down to #5, so that's not bad.

This week was a week better staying at home!  LOL  There were major text message issues between my team, and as a result, one bowler didn't show up, and the alternate didn't show up.   >:(  As a result we bowled one less person, and my last game was crap!  We lost all three games, and wood, so I'm sure we'll drop down even further for next week.

One bright note, next week is my week to do music, so I'm looking forward to that!

Oh my!

The team we played yesterday is piiiiiiiiiiiiiiissssssssssssssed!

We played the top team last night.  I assumed there was no way we'd be getting any winning points.  Well....Frank was out of town, so we has to use our alternate, Cristina.  She said she'd be there, no problem, and and we'd have our team of 3.

Ten minutes before I was leaving the house, Cristina texted me and said she couldn't make it.  Shit.  So when I got to the bowling alley, I talked to the league president, and he told me if any subs showed up, he'd put one on our team.  Before the game started, Keith was assigned to us.  I have no idea who he was, hadn't seen him before.

The highest score you can get bowling is a 300, his first game was a 280!  :o  Out of a possible 12 strikes, he got 11, and the one frame he missed was a spare!

I was in awe, to say the least!  The other team was pissed, to say the least!

On top of that, Pete (my other team mate) and I bowled over our averages, so the other team had to be perfect, plus extra, and they weren't.

We won all 7 points, and beat them by almost 300 pins.  :o

Well, there are only 5 weeks left of the season, and then I'll have a normal bedtime on Tuesdays for a while!

After last week's victory we are back in 5th place, actually a tie for 5th, but we're listed ahead of the other team because we had more pinfall than they did.

Last night's game went well.  I bowled above average each game, and one game was a 165 for a score.  ;D

We won two of the three games, and took wood by 150 pins.  ;D  Here's to hoping we move up in the standings.

One more week down, and 4 to go to the end of the season.

 ;D

Last night was a mixed bag, we won one out of three games, but in the end the pin count was very close.

before last night's game my team was in 5th place overall, so I can't complain.

Another week down to the end of the season.

;D

Last week's mixed results for my team didn't affect our standings, as we were in 5th place again last night.  I was a little worried when I got to the lanes, and saw we were playing one of the top teams last night, my initial thought was "please don't let us lose too badly."

Somehow, we won 2 of the three games, and took wood as well.

;D

The best part of the night was my first game, where I somehow managed to get a new personal league high of 182.  Sooooo close to that 200 game!

Title: Re: Striking Out

Thanks Chrissi!

;D

Before last night my team was still in 5th place.  ;D  Not bad.

We lost one game last night,  but won 2 and took wood, so I can't complain about that.

I will complain about how I bowled.     Ugh.  All three games were below average, one of them I just barely broke 100.

I was not amused.

The next two weeks of the league are the last for the season, and they are "position nights".  What this means is all the teams have a chance to improve their standings in the next two weeks.   The first place team plays against the second place team.  Third vs. fourth, fifth vs. sixth, and so on.   So the next two weeks, we'll be bowling against "Just Bowling Off Steam", who we played last night.  I don't believe we'll be able to move up in the standings, but what we need to do is defend our 5th place finish.
Title: Re: Striking Out

Only one week to go!

 ;D

Last night's games went well.   I can't complain about our team, or my bowling!

Out of the three games, I bowled one right at average, and the other two games above average.  (My average is a 122, the other games were a 138 and a 155.)

We were 5th place last night at the start of the competition, and we took 6 of the 7 points.  We won the first two games, (4 points) and we 'took wood' (1 point).  The third game I was slightly annoyed with my team mate.  He could not pull it together, and only bowled a 99.  I really bit my tongue, because there were PLENTY of nights I've done the same thing.  However, on the third game the other team rallied and it ended up in a tie game, so we each got one point for the last game, instead of one team getting two.

I'm not sure who we are playing next week.  I do believe we stayed in 5th place.  However, with the 6th place team only getting one point, it's possible they went down in the standings, and we may be playing another team on Tuesday night.
Title: Re: Striking Out
Post by: CellarDweller on May 22, 2013, 08:51:50 am
Last night was the official last night of bowling for the season!  Summer break, and then back to the league in September.

 ;D

Well, what I thought would happen, happened.  The team we played last week dropped down to 7th place, and the 7th place team jumped up to 6th, so we had to play a different team, and the team was a team that beat us before, and has the league president on it.

 :o

I compared the scores of the teams so far, and they needed to win all 7 points to beat us and move up in the standings, which would have pushed us down to #6 and out of the top 5 teams.  I was really hoping for a Top 5 finish for us to end the season, specifically since last season we finished second to last.

We ended up bowling really well, and took all 7 points!  Not only did we defend our 5th place spot, we were only 3 points behind the 4th place team, and they split their games with the team they were playing, so it's very possible (but not certain yet) that we moved up into 4th place.

It may be a bit early for a celebration, but hey, I want a ribbon!

Well, the new season of bowling started last night, it wasn't a fun night, but the scores weren't counted towards our averages/handicaps, so there wasn't as much pressure as a regular night.

I managed to keep all three games above 100, and two of them above last year's average of 120, so I'm happy with that.

;D

One change to the team, instead of a team of three, we're a team of four.  Frank, Pete and I were joined by Cristina.  Since we were called "Bearly Bowling" last year, and Cristina is not a bear, we decided to change the name of the team.  Cristina is Latina, so now we officially are Chica "n" the 3 Bears.

Bowling season has started again!

Last week was a 'non-scoring' night, so it was basically practice.

Last night the scores counted, and our averages carried over from last season.

My team did fairly well.  We won only 1 of the three games, but my teammate (Cris) got herself a bowling ball (last season she used house balls) and you could see the improvement in her game.

As for me, my average for last year was a 120, and my games last night were 123, 142 & 145.

;D

Good start to the season.

Also, there was a guy there who is into bowling, and watched me bowl my first game (123) and he gave me some tips.  I followed his advice, and by doing that the other two games, I added 20 pins more to each score.

Yay on a sucessful evening, Chuck! :) You should keep following his tips.

Question: what do you do with complete washouts? Someone who wants to bowl in your league but can't keep a ball straight and doesn't show progress after a couple of months? Do they get passed on from team to team, so the disadvantage is evenly spread on every team? Are they politely asked if bowling is really the best pastime for them?
Title: Re: Striking Out
Post by: CellarDweller on September 12, 2013, 10:15:41 am
washouts are allowed here.  LOL

The league is termed a "fun league" and new people are generally asked if they are very competitive, or here for fun, and they are given an appropriate team.

That doesn't mean that the competetive teams have all the best bowlers.  My team finished 4th last season, and we're far from competitive.

Why I'm laughing?
Well, the expression of "losing wood" is unknown to me. I googled and the top result was Urban Dictionary. Which I sometimes think exists mostly of sexual references. So somehow I already suspected...

from Urban Dictionary:
1. Losing Wood
To loose an erect penis.
(During sexual encounter) Damm, im losing wood...

Then I tried to transfer this to your bowling experience...... three guys in the bowling alley........ Oh, nooooo! We're losing wood.......

Everytime I use either "lost wood" or "took wood" I get crazy looks from people.

Allow me to explain:

The bowling is done in three games, two teams playing against each other, three players on each team.  Let's say that Team A wins the first match, 450 to 400.  Second match, Team A wins again 425 to 400.  The third match Team B wins big time, 600 to 400.

Each match is scored with 2 points, and an extra 1 point for 'wood' or most pins knocked down.

Team A had scores of 450, 425 and 400.
Team B had scores of 400, 400 and 600.

Team A won games 1 & 2, and eans 4 points
Team B won game 3.  When you total the scores, Team A totaled 1275, while Team B totaled 1400, so Team B "took wood" and gets the extra point.

Final tally is Team A earns 4 points, Team B earns 3.

Two gams at 100, third game was 135.  Last week (1/7) we managed to move up to #9.  Haven't seen the standings for the most recent Tuesday (1/14), but we won 5 of the seven points, so I anticipate going back up in the standings.

My first game was horrible!  I couldn't get past an 81 for a score, and when your average is a 121, that's horrible.

I managed to fight to a 110 for my second game, and then the third game was crazy, I scored a 167, and was the high game for my team.  ???

I just need to figure out what I did that last game, and repeat it.

Somehow, my team moved into the top 10 teams last week.  I won't look a gift horse in the mouth, I'll just accept it.

I'm hoping we move up a bit further after last night.  I had two good games, with scores of 107, 135 and 137.  We won two of the three games, and took wood, so in the end we won 5 of the 7 points.

;D

We didn't move up in the standings, so those above us must've bowled better than we did last week.  LOL  Oh well!

We won two of the three games, and took wood, so in the end we won 5 of the 7 points, just like the prior week.  I'm happier with my scores on a personal level.  118, 129, and a 157, in that order, so it was good to see the scores go up and up.  Now if I could just hit that ellusive 200 game!

I will be programing the music for the next match, which will be Sunday.  That's the day we have to bowl to make up for the night bowling was cancelled due to the snowstorm.

;D

Well, everyone liked the music I made for Sunday's games.  I was just under average for each game, my team won 4 out of the possible 7 points.

This Tuesday is position night, meaning we play the team just ahead of us in the standings.

This Tuesday is position night, meaning we play the team just ahead of us in the standings.

Bowling last night went well!  ;D

I was under average for each game, however, my team mates were over average, and the team we played against was under average as well.

End result was that we won all 7 points last night.

Before the game was played, my team was ranked at #8 out of 20 teams, so I'm hoping after getting all 7 points that we move up even more.

All victories are short-lived!

Last week we took all 7 points in a position night.  :)  This helped our team's standings, we jumped from the #9 position to #6.  Pretty good.

Unfortunately, we could't get it together last night, and we were playing one of the top teams in the league, so we lost all 7 points last night.  Not sure where we'll end up at this point.  Have to wait until Tuesday to see.

Last night continued our downfall, as we played one of the top teams in the league.

Ugh!

We lost all 7 points.  However, I took it as a personal victory that I bowled better than I have in a while, and had two games above average.
Title: Re: Striking Out
Post by: CellarDweller on March 26, 2014, 08:09:13 am
And the downfall continues, but it wasn't my fault!  LOL

We lost all 7 points again last night, we were playing another of the top ranking teams.  My scores for the night were 111, 118, and 144.

One of my teammates was really off his game, and he just couldn't get it together.  In two of his three games, he was about 40 pins away from his average.  He was getting frustrated, and I've been there so I know what he was feeling.

I'm pleased with how I bowled.  ;D

Well guess what?  We finally won some points!  LOL

We lost our first game last night, but won the second and third games.  When the final scores were totaled up, we 'took wood' by a total of 2 pins.

:o

Very close games!

Wost game was the first, an 85.  Next game was a 110, and I ended the night with a 135.

My team continues to hold their own in the standings.  My first game was crap, I couldn't break 100, but my teammates did great, and the other team not so much, so we won the first game.

We also won the second, and took wood, we just lost the third game, and it was only by about 20 pins.

overall, not a bad night!

Last night was an interesting night.

I was pretty tired when I got to bowling, so I wasn't sure how it would go.  My team is currently in 10th place.

My first game was a 130, which is 5 pins above average.  Was pretty happy about that.  We won the first game by 25 pins.

Second game was even better, and I bowled a 150.  It's a good thing I did so well, because my two teammates were off their game, and the other team tied us for the second game, so we had to split the points for that.

Last game my entire team was shot.....we struggled, and I couldn't even break 100, getting to 95.  We lost the last game by 33 pins, so in the end we lost wood by 8 pins.

Oh well!

another late night of bowling, but the season draws to an end soon.

;D

It will be nice to be able to not have a late night each Tuesday, for a little while.

my games were up, down and up.  ::)  My average is (lately) a 116.  My first game was a 124, the second game was 89, and the last was 131.   thank god the last game redeemed me.

Season is winding down, only three weeks of bowling left.

;D

My team is still in 10th place, and last night's games went well.  We took all three games, and wood.  We won the first game by 20 pins, which is close.  Second game we won by 100 pins, and the last game won by 1 pin!  Super close!

Inconsistency reigns supreme in bowling.

My average is still 116.  My first game was a 130, my second game dropped to a 83 (:o) and my third went back to a 145.

I still can't figure out what happened with that middle game.

Next week is our last week of bowling.

;D

Last night's game went well.  We won 5 out of the 7 points to win, and all my games were above my average!  ;D

I think this should put my team in 9th place.  Which means after next week we'll finish either 8th, 9th or 10th, depending on how well we play.

;D

Last night was the first "official" night of bowling.   We did bowl last week, but that was a 'fun' night, with no scores being counted.

Last night was (as always) a mixed bag.  I started the night with a 110, plummeted down to a 77, and then finished with a 140, which I was pretty happy about.  Now if I can just figure out how I got that score, and repeat it over the next few nights....LOL

We ditched last year's alternate bowler (a woman) who only showed up for three games and wasn't around to help us.  This year one of my teammates (Pete) convinced his partner to join,  so we have a more reliable alternate to bowl, so we've set up a rotating schedule.

We've also reclaimed our old name since we're all guys again, ditching "Chica "n" the 3 Bears".  We are once again, "Bearly Bowling".

Bowling was a mixed bag on Tuesday, but with me, that's to be expected.  LOL

First game was a 110, second game was awful (77) and then I finished the night with a 141.

Now, if I can just figure out what I did for that thrid game, and how to replicate it over and over.......

I'm quoting myself because it was pretty much the same last night!  I started the night with a 102, went down to a 90, and then finished with a 144.  My team won 5 of the seven points last night, that should be enough to keep us in the top 10.

Last night was a bowling night, and while it wasn't a good one for the team, it was a good one for me.  ;D

The team lost all 7 points, my two teammates both bowled way below average, so any hope we had to lose flew out the window.

It was happy with my bowling.  First time in a long time that I had no games under 100.   First game was 133, second was 109, and third was 125.  Works for me!  :)

Back from Bowling, and since I'm off this week, I don't need to rush back to bed.

:)

Much better week for the team, we won 5 of the 7 points at stake, so I'm sure we'll move up in the standings.  As for me, none of my games were spectacular, but they were all around my average, which is fine with me.  :)

Last night was a brutal night!  My first two games I couldn't get over 100, but my last game I rebounded and got a 127, which made me happy.

Everyone else on my team was just as bad as I was, so it wasn't just me, something was really off!!!  The good thing was that no one else on the other team we were playing showed up, so it was like a forfeit, and we should win all 7 points.

:)

Not much to report for last night.

It was a fun Halloween party, and I won funniest costume.  $50.00 :)

Hello!

Well, finally some good news.    I managed a small rebound from last week, and managed to get two games over 100.

My team also won 4 of the 7 points.....it felt good to win again!    The first win was a direct result of my bowling in the first game.  We were behind by 25 pins, and I was the last bowler.  I got 2 strikes in the 10th frame, and then 8 more pins, so we won by 3 pins.

How many teams?
It reminds me of back in Primary school when I went up to the teacher giving out prizes because I came 4th in a running race and they were giving prizes up to 4th. He sent me away as there were only 4 in  my race. ;D  That was my usual position when running - last.
That was in the 1950's, these days everyone seems to get a prize.
I usually came in the top 3 academically (except maths) so I survived my sporting failures.

I haven't posted here all year!  :o

Next week is the last week for the current season of bowling.  :)

The good news is that after tonight, we've moved into 9th place out of 20 teams, so we've improved our standings from last season.

:)

the bad news is that one of my teammates looks like he's leaving the league.  He's retiring from work, and will be moving further away, so getting here in time on Tuesdays will be very hard.

The summer break is over, and we start bowling again next week.

The teammate who retired did move further away, so we have a new member, named Doug.

He's a really nice guy, and he suggested we change our team name.  We thought the name he came up with was funny, so we have given up the name "Bearly Bowling" and now we are "Up And Coming".  ;)

Hello!

Bowling (for me) went well.   What do I mean by that?   Well, anyone else would not be pleased with my scores tonight.  All of my games were close to 100, but none crossed that line into 100.

However, I have not bowled since the league stopped in early May, so I was thinking I  would have a few time where I dropped the ball, and a few gutter balls.  While tonight was not stellar, I had only one gutter ball, and I didn't drop the ball, so I'm happy with that!

;D

Only way to go is up from here!

Oh, our new team member (Doug) is a really nice guy.  He even came up with a funny new name for the team.  We used to be "Bearly Bowling" (three big, hairy guys) but Doug felt that a name change was needed, and now we are "Up & Coming".

;D

Now if I could figure out how I did that, and how to replicate that!

The game that I scored 136 on I definitely had more marks (spares and strikes) than usual.  Now I need to figure out how to do it again.

A perfect game (all strikes) is 300.   I've never seen one in person, but I've seen people come very close.

I saw someone come close today, he had 7 strikes in a row, and then he got 9 pins and missed the spare.
