Title: I just saw the Fonz!
Post by: southendmd on April 13, 2011, 05:01:45 pm
This is pretty random, so I'm posting it in Anything Goes.

I just saw Henry Winkler, aka The Fonz!  He gave a talk at my hospital today, in the role of "educational ambassador" for an organization called the Open Arms Campaign.  Apparently, it's involved in the treatment of sequelae from strokes.  Henry's mother had a stroke many years ago, and that's his connection.  (Honestly, the website looks more like an ad for Botox, the purported treatment for "upper limb spasticity".  Cynical me questions his financial involvement.)

My hospital has a stroke center and support groups, and he supposedly donates his time on behalf of the organization.  He spoke a little about his family; his parents were "short little Germans" who fled Nazi Germany in 1939.

A local TV station was here also; there was quite a turn out for him.  He is still very recognizable, his hair is a little too long, and his jokes a little too corny.  But, he was very gracious in signing stuff and taking photos with people.

He plugged an upcoming book (photos about trout fishing LOL), and some TV show he's involved with.

Yes, he did the "heyyyyyyyyy" at the beginning as a response to the applause.   8)

hehe! I worked with him on some projects for the epilepsy foundation. Hank...excuse me, Mr. Winkler, is very generous with his time and talent. He's a real charmer too!! We should put him to work on marriage equality.

LOL

Henry Winkler is/was an American actor, famous for playing the greaser with a heart of gold on the '70s TV show about the '50s "Happy Days".  His character's name was Arthur Fonzarelli, aka The Fonz.

That's really neat Paul!! 8)

I loved watching Happy Days when I was a teen!

The cashier at the CVS I shop at told me Henry Winkler stopped in there a couple of years ago and she waited on him. I asked her if she got his autograph and she said no. She said she was too shy to do it. I have no idea why he was in Indy. She said he was very friendly and polite.

William Shatner also stopped in there once. She said he was very nice too but looked quite drunk! lol :-\

Meryl Streep's husband is from Indianapolis and she told David Letterman the two of them come to Indianapolis all the time to see his (her husband's) parents and family. I'd love to meet her in person some day.

As if THAT would ever happen!

Anyway, that sounds really interesting and fun, Paul!!
