Title: BBM now in discount bin!
Post by: whiteoutofthemoon on October 08, 2006, 03:24:46 pm
well, I guess it had to happen sometime.....yesterday I saw the BBM DVD in the discount bin at Walmart and Sam's club, selling for $11.86!  it's also in those DVD of the month club catalogs (buy one, get 4 free deals).   So, I dunno if that's good or bad, but at least it means that the movie has gone somewhat mainstream, no longer confined to the back dark corner of the video store.   And hey, even the classics can be in the discount bin, can't expect it to be full price forever!  it's almost a year now since the release.

I hear it's coming to Cable soon, so next stop...network TV!  Parental discretion advised....haha.

 ;D ::)

If people buy the dvd, even now at discount price, well at least thats someone else who is going to see that movie, and if just one out of 100 of them, feel the message and it changes their view on things, then it will be worth it.....

This is bizzare. I was in a store on Saturday and saw that BBM was in the discount section, and I felt offended.

I guess it's good that more people might see it now..... but I was struck by an urge to bring it up to the counter and point out that a film of this quality, one that had touched the lives of so many people in so deep a fashion, should never be in the discount section.

Not the thoughts of a sane individual huh?  :)

BBM in the discount bin? - Don't look right. :(

In my country, BBM is available as rental DVD for just a few weeks now. And it will be available to purchase from October, 16th.
Sometimes it's good to be behind  :)

When my daughter goes to her ballett lessons, we always come along the video store. For the last weeks, I always stopped at the display window. Just seing the big BBM poster there makes me feel good  :)

Sometimes when I did not have time to watch the movie I would go to On Demand and watch the preview for my fix.  Went on there the other night and it is no longer available.  It was like getting the Deceased postcard.  I wanted to cry.  I gasped when I realized it was gone and my little girl asked me what was wrong.  I told her I was looking for an old friend and that he was not there right now.  Sad.

I'm in the UK and am pleased to say it hasn't reached the discount bins anywhere near me yet. It was still in the charted section in some shops only last week. Good news!

Really? I saw it for £7.00, yes just £7.00, in HMV. That's when I nearly complained to the management  :)

See - insane thinking.

It's not crazy to be upset about it. I guess it happens to all movies. I just hope more and more people will view and discover the movie.

This summer I used to bike past the local video store as I always do, and for as long as the BBM poster was prominently featured in their window display I gave the boys some smiles and a wink every day. Seeing them there got to be a secret happpy habit.

And then, one day..... of course it had to happen, but it was way too soon IMO: They were gone. **Sniff** That window don't look right anymore.

Haven't seen them in any discount bin yet, but that is bound to happen soon.

It only came out here in Holland 10 days ago, so still full price and beautiful box sets here... I will cherish that...

Haven't noticed that, and in our Blockbusters here it's still on prominent display, not yet relegated to the "Drama" section. But when it happens, that will be an opportunity to get more copies to donate to libraries! The library in our town (population 2,500) just started carrying DVD's. BBM isn't there yet but it is offered in other libraries in the regional system it's in.

We have a convenience store/gas station here in the US Midwest called Casey's, and BBM is one of the movies for rent. So I guess the bright side is that it's reaching further and further into the population, so to speak.

How goes the saying? - Great minds think alike.
And Brokies feel alike about their movie. This is so funny, that we both have the same reaction to a simple poster. I smile at them every time, too. "Seeing them there got to be a secret happpy habit". Yup. Same here.
I hope the poster will stay there for many, many weeks.

Same here, When the poster was up, or just looking at the book on the book stand, I felt somehow, that here were pictures of my "friends" up there for all to see......was a funny feeling, and I thought, I was the only one feeling like that.

Luckily, my son knows the lady in the video shop, and she kept the poster for him to give to me, so now it sits proudly, framed, on my home office wall here.

Hey, if the stores near you still have the poster up, you could ask them if you can have one when they take them down.  That's what I did, and I got one for free, in excellent shape, that I had mounted and is up on my wall.

You bet that I will do that. Unluckily, I'm no customer at this store, I've never been there before. But I'll try anyway.
And if I won't get it, there's always ebay. The posters are sold there, too. But somehow I'd prefer to have THE one from our local store. Don't ask me why... ::) Must be another, still unknown symptom of Brokeback fever (maybe Leslie knows more about it  ;)).

Even though I own the DVD, I still find myself picking it up if I pass it in a shop, smiling to myself before putting it back on the shelf.

I own a widescrene copy... and I've been tempted to pick up a full screen copy.  Mainly because I've been told there's some subtle things at the bottom of the screen to look for that was trimed when it goes widescrene.
Although, I know you gain far more with widescren then you do with full (almost a third of an image) ...but it just has me curious.

I'm also sorry I never put dibs on any promo posters or those cardboard stand-ups you see in stores.
Although, I've managed to find some REALLY high quality pic's I could easily make something out of.

I'm very intrigued by this description "beautiful box sets."  Tell us more!  My copy of the DVD (pre-ordered from Amazon.com before it was released way back in April) is in a lousy, overly simple case with NO insert booklet or anything inside.  To make matters worse... the cover of my copy has that annoying white border with the 3 Oscar wins announement on it.  I wish I had a copy with a normal cover.  But, such was my urge to get my hands on BBM the second it came out here that I ended up having to deal with wierd packaging.  I'm very jealous about the idea of a "beautiful box set."

Hey, I wonder (regarding the U.S. market) if this trend of old BBM DVDs ending up in discount bins might encourage the idea of a spruced-up special edition.  I've sort of lost hope for the idea of a special edition with added bonus features... but I guess I shouldn't give up hope quite yet (that seems to be a good Brokeback kind of sentiment, hunh?)

Around where I live (SF Bay Area) BBM is only discounted at Walmart.  As far as I know, it is full price at most other video stores.

It's still on display at my local video rental store. Discount bin? Makes me want to go buy (yet) another copy  ;D

I'd like to think that one will be produced. I don't think that it will contain all the material that some might hope for (no tent scenes cutting room floor material). However, the filmed deleted scenes would be good, and commentaries.

If I could find them for about $5 each I would buy a bunch and give them away to frineds. Anyother movie I would attempt to burn a copy, but not this one, it is sacred.

I agree with Katie that Wal Mart discounting the dvd is a good thing.  More people are likely to buy Brokeback Mountain just out of curiosity if nothing else and maybe some will be inspired by the movie.  I bought my dvd at Wal Mart back in April for $24.95 and I was glad to just get the dvd.  I have watched it so many times now that I have the different scenes almost memorized.  Even a great movie like Brokeback Mountain was going to be put on the discount rack sometime.  I think it is a tribute to the movie that after almost nine months there are still so many of us "Brokies" discussing this movie on the internet.

I'm very intrigued by this description "beautiful box sets."  Tell us more!

It's a 2-DVD box set with really nice artwork, but there are no extras on it other than the extras on the US and UK version, so I told myself I am not allowed to buy it, because I already have the UK version, but I might convince myself otherwise... ;)

Oh, but it DOES contain the original trailer, which is pretty cool.

Yesterday I saw a commercial on TV promoting the BBM DVD on Dutch TV, and the funny thing is that there are almost NEVER commercials for single DVDs on TV! I was jumping up and down in our living room!!!

You know... 'Brokeback Mountain' ending up in the bargain bin just might be a really good thing. Don't they always discount the original releases, just before they bring out the boxed collectors edition?  Or, editon's'.

Heeee... and how many other movies that came out at the same time are now on the $9.99 trash bin? Even 'Aviator' was marked down months ago. I'd say our boys did real well for themselves. Like others have said, imagine how many more folks might buy a copy now, just to find out what all the hoopla was about. And in doing so, find themselves touched to the very core of their souls, by the story of two young men who find a love so powerful, it would shape everthing about them for the rest of their lives.

Stuck my head into a couple of DVD stores at the town's major shopping mall earlier today. BBM is still in the shelves in the lower half of their "Top 10 DVDs" (The local BBM DVD version was released ca. 3 months ago). So it's still not in the bargain bins over here. Which pleases me. Probably the DVD is experiencing something of the same that happened to the film in its theatrical run: Reasonable and steady interest over a lengthy period of time as word of mouth gets around.  :)

Although, I know you gain far more with widescren then you do with full (almost a third of an image) ...but it just has me curious.

I ordered the widescreen edition from amazon.com for my 20" Widescreen Monitor.   On April 4, I bought the fullscreen version at Walmart.   I love them both.   Their are subtle differences.  The most glaring that I experience is that you can see Ennis's wedding ring on the in the Motel in the Fullscreen Version.  It speaks volumns with him being pulled in two directions at once.   And his face - so poignant.  I watched the film in the theatre 5 times.  I have watched the widescreen version twice and the full screen version 3 times.   TURN ON THE SUBTITLES and get ready for a whole new depth of experience.  I want to keep this film for very special occasions; like when I am not going to be needed by anyone for a couple of days.   All of this because of a low budget movie that tugs so hard on my heartstrings and I never want this feeling to go away.   I love classic movies.   Old ones from the thirties and fourties.   Believe me, this film will one day regarded as one of the best films ever made.
