Dim the house lights and change into something more comfortable -- onstage, if you don't mind -- because the trailer for Steven Soderbergh's highly anticipated male stripper movie Magic Mike  has finally arrived. It's The Avengers  of beefcake, and it's got Channing Tatum taking his clothes off, doing frontflips, spinning around like a whirling dervish, and generally winning every season ever broadcast of So You Think You Can Dance, Make Me a Supermodel, Teen Wolf, Grey's Anatomy,  and True Blood. That some of those shows cannot even be won matters not. All that matters is that you've got a Tatumpalooza, you've got Matthew McConaughey in the undressed role he's been preparing his whole life for, you've got glimpses of the supporting strippers like Alex Pettyfer and Joe Manganiello, and you've got some buzzkill girls who basically wander into this movie to say, "Waaah waaah, don't strip, do you really want to strip? You don't really want to strip." Shut up! They want to strip, and you should let them. America the Beautiful, or something!

Like listening to Adele’s 21  and reruns of Downton Abbey,  there can never be too many updates about Steven Soderbergh’s male stripper movie Magic Mike. EW  has two new exclusive images from the film, out June 29, and when we caught up with costar Matt Bomer on the red carpet at last night’s People’s Choice Awards, we couldn’t help but ask about how he prepared, literally, to show off so much skin. Check out our interview with Bomer, along with the full image of Bomer with costars Adam Rodriguez and Channing Tatum, and an exclusive shot of Tatum and costar Alex Pettyfer, below.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: We’ve got to talk about playing a stripper in Magic Mike.
MATT BOMER: Exotic dancer. We have pride. [Smiles ]

You had to get waxed, right? Did it hurt?
Yes and yes.

Have you waxed before?
I had never been waxed before. I did have to get partially waxed. I’m not a very hairy individual to begin with, but it was painful. But more than that, the pain didn’t bother me so much, it was more the feeling of feeling kind of prepubescent again, walking around with no hair on your legs, in jeans, feeling kind of naked all the time, that was odd.

Did it grow back okay?
Actually, the regrowth process was really s—-y — itchy, uncomfortable. I have a newfound appreciation for women, between the waxing, self-tanning, the constant gym time; I have a whole new profound respect for women and what they go through.

Other than that, you enjoyed yourself?
It’s Steven Soderbergh. Yeah, we had a really good time. I know Tim [DeKay, his White Collar costar] is going to tease me about a few moments in the film. I’m looking forward to seeing just what I get teased about the most.

When it comes to Steven Soderbergh's upcoming male stripper epic, Magic MikeVulture has adopted a "more is more" attitude (toward everything but the film's skimpy costumes, of course). At last night's Haywire  premiere, we managed to pry a few more details from Soderbergh about what he's got planned for the soundtrack to the unclothed Channing Tatum comedy. "There's a couple of iconic songs in the movie that tend to be used in strip clubs," he told us. "You've got 'It's Raining Men,' stuff like that. That one is a given. I don't want to spoil the other ones yet. That's the only one, we're actually in the process right now of paying for the rights. These are expensive songs, and we're not a big movie, so ... " Meanwhile, Soderbergh is prepping his next movie, a suspenseful drama starring Tatum and Blake Lively that's been referred to in the press as both Bitter Pill  and The Side Effects.  "The title I want is Bitter Pill," Soderbergh said. "It's a thriller and it's hard-edged, so I think that's the better title." Would he be open to casting his Magic Mike  co-star Matthew Bomer, who told us that he wants in? "If he's got his clothes on, I'm not interested," Soderbergh joked.

Magic Mike: Film Review
Inspired by Channing Tatum's stint at 18 as a male stripper,
Steven Soderbergh's comedy-drama also stars Alex Pettyfer,
Matthew McConaughey, Cody Horn and a host of tasty It Boys
and Girls.

The Bottom Line:
A beefcake bonanza with heart as well as muscle.

Kevin Nash, Adam Rodriguez, Channing Tatum, Matt Bomer, and Joe Manganiello

NEW YORK – In Magic Mike,  Channing Tatum’s pre-Hollywood experience as a male stripper has inspired not only one of his better roles, but also arguably the raunchiest, funniest and most enjoyably nonjudgmental American movie about selling sex since Boogie Nights,  its obvious if considerably darker precursor. Delivering what feels like a young director’s work and not that of a guy nudging 50, Steven Soderbergh taps into the jazzy erotic energy that put him on the map more than 20 years ago with Sex, Lies, and Videotape.

Following its closing-night premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival, the Warner release should rake in girl and gay dollars on the strength of its ample man candy alone. The script by first-time screenwriter Reid Carolin (Tatum’s producing partner) is stronger on dialogue and character than on narrative originality or emotional conflict. But as Soderbergh showed in his Ocean’s Eleven  series, the director has a terrific feel for depicting male camaraderie, and the buddy elements should give Magic Mike  inclusive appeal.

It may also be the first mainstream movie to feature a casual demonstration of a pump-operated penis enlarger (keep an eye on the left-hand margins of the widescreen frame), which should at least provide a talking point at the multiplex.

A self-described entrepreneur whose small businesses include roof tiling, car detailing and designing custom furniture from found objects, Mike (Tatum) makes his serious cash as one of the "cock-rocking kings of Tampa" in a male dance revue at ladies’ nightspot Xquisite. The fringe benefits are apparent as Mike is slyly introduced, naked and still groggy after a three-way with occasional hookup Joanna (Olivia Munn) and a girl whose name neither of them can remember.

Matthew McConaughey

Mike’s stripper guru is club owner Dallas, a gonzo showman in leather vest and tearaway pants, played by a hilariously self-parodying Matthew McConaughey. Sporting more six packs than a beer blast, Dallas’ crew includes pretty boy Ken (Matt Bomer), whose "Living Doll" routine takes its cue from his name; Tarzan (Kevin Nash), a gnarled wild man in the Mickey Rourke mold; Latin stud Tito (Adam Rodriguez); and Big Dick Richie (Joe Manganiello), whose special talent requires no explanation, though he does get a little help from the aforementioned pump.

The undisputed star attraction, however, and big brother to the troupe is Magic Mike, a role that allows Tatum to show off the slick dance moves he’s kept hidden since Step Up.

Choreographed by Alison Faulk, both the solo routines and the group numbers are a blast, embracing every cheesy male stripper stereotype from soldiers, sailors and cops to cowboys and firemen. These guys are like a heterosexual rethink of The Village People. Their routines include a fabulously hoary "It's Raining Men" number with trench coats and umbrellas, and a boot camp routine with McConaughey cranking up the crazy intensity as Uncle Sam.

Soderbergh clearly gets a kick out of flipping the gender roles of sexual objectification. The club scenes cater to male fantasies of mass female adoration, while the hoards of delirious, drunken women stuffing singles into jockstraps represent a liberating switch from the usual depictions of sleazy men leering at poledancers.

Alex Pettyfer and Channing Tatum

The primary focus of Carolin’s story is the friendship between Mike and Adam (Alex Pettyfer), a directionless 19-year-old college football-scholarship dropout he meets on a roofing crew. Mike takes Adam under his wing, shoving him onstage without warning to do his first strip, appropriately, to "Like a Virgin." Nervous but game, Adam is dubbed The Kid and proves a natural at pleasing the ladies.

Some of the funniest scenes include The Kid getting schooled in crotch-grinding moves by Dallas, glistening in a crop top and short shorts; and Adam’s awkward non-explanation when his sister Brooke (Cody Horn) discovers a box full of thongs and sex-fantasy costumes, and finds him using her razor to shave his legs. The sibling rapport is sketched with warmth and humor, as is the slow-burning attraction between Mike and Brooke. This is complicated by her protectiveness toward her loose-cannon younger brother and her skepticism about Mike’s line of work.

Tatum deftly shows that beneath all the hard partying and easy sex, there’s a longing for a real relationship in Mike, as well as a hunger to explore his creativity by focusing on his furniture designs. There’s also an encroaching fear of ending up a self-deifying nutjob like Dallas, who plans to upgrade the act with a move to big-time Miami.

Inevitably, the movie takes a sobering turn. Adam’s lack of maturity impairs his judgment, prompting him to over-indulge in druggy sex (notably with Riley Keough as a stoned Kewpie doll with a pet piglet) and split an ecstasy deal with the club deejay (Gabriel Iglesias). The entrée of Adam’s character into stripping was inspired by Tatum’s experience at 18, though the out-of-control spiral reportedly is fictional.

Joe Manganiello

While this plotline echoes countless perils-of-success movies and could easily have become a male Showgirls,  Soderbergh shrewdly avoids letting it turn lurid or campy by underplaying the melodrama. Instead, he observes droll but humanizing details, like a quick shot of Mike patiently ironing out crumpled dollar bills retrieved from his underwear. The humor is refreshingly low-key and unforced, such as having True Blood   hunk Manganiello, who’s built like Iron Man, be the delicate one of the troupe, fretting over herpes or putting his back out while giving a zaftig customer an airborne thrill.

Some of the movie’s best moments are those in which Soderbergh's nimble camera -- he shot the film under his usual cinematographer alias of Peter Andrews and edited as Mary Ann Bernard -- looks on while the guys chill backstage at Xquisite, pumping biceps, mending thongs or doing shots to get into performance mode. This dialogue often has a semi-improvised feel, with Soderbergh eavesdropping on snatches of conversation in a style reminiscent of Robert Altman.

There’s a looseness and buoyancy to the filmmaking and to the naturalistic performances that keeps the story real, and while many of the key cast members have relatively little to do, even the smallest roles add texture. Tatum’s balance of breezy confidence and nagging restlessness is just right, while Pettyfer scores as the cocky new recruit dazzled by his sudden demi-celebrity. And as the movie’s grounded voice of caution, Horn is enormously appealing. Betsy Brandt from Breaking Bad  pops up in a nice bit as a bank officer processing Mike’s loan application.

Shot on Red Digital Camera, the well-paced film goes for desaturated exteriors, as if life outside the club unfolds in a sun-blasted permanent hangover state. Music supervisor Frankie Pine’s playlist keeps the action humming. It provides propulsive enhancement to this cheeky peek at a seductive world distilled by Mike to its essence of "women, money and a good time."

I love how Matthew McConaughey has acquired that layer of subtle self-parody in his old(er) age.

Also, didn't Steven Soderbergh say he was going to quit directing about five movies ago? Thank god he hasn't yet.

Movie Review:
Magic Mike
Is Arty, Energetic, Soft-Core

By David Edelstein

Far more prolific than before he announced he was giving up moviemaking, Steven Soderbergh has set Magic Mike,  his latest parable of how capitalism transforms sex into a soulless commodity, in the world of male strippers. It’s surprisingly enjoyable. The morality play is obvious but not crushingly so, while the strip scenes are free of the usual Sex, Lies, and Videotape  mixture of attraction and repulsion. Soderbergh is his own cinematographer (under the name “Peter Andrews”), and maybe because he’s a heterosexual he can shoot these male bodies without fearing his own (supposedly) unhealthy voyeuristic gaze. He lets you bask in the glow of the mens’ musculature; their tanned, toned torsos; the pleasure they take from selling their bodies by choice instead of (as with so many women) economic necessity. He can see them through the eyes of the women in the audience who scream themselves hoarse as they reach for the dancers’ crotches. For once in a Soderbergh film, the artist overpowers the pointy-headed social scientist.

As the title character, a dancer especially beloved by the ladies, Channing Tatum finally holds the camera like a movie star instead of another generic hunk. He once worked as an exotic dancer and still has the moves — along with the faint embarrassment that comes from having outgrown this brand of exhibitionism. Mike also works as an aide to the beady-eyed Tampa strip club owner (and ex-dancer), Dallas (Matthew McConaughey): He wants to make enough to open a business designing furniture, to be a full-time artist instead of a part-time whore.

The script by Reid Carolin soft-peddles the clichés but doesn’t miss a trick. There’s a male ingenue, the down-and-out slacker Adam (Alex Pettyfer), whom Mike brings him into the stripper fold — i.e., leads astray. There’s the light-haired good girl, Adam’s sister, Brooke (Cody Horn), who fears for her brother and watches Mike with quiet disapproval, and the dark bad girl (Olivia Munn), a chill grad student clearly using him for his hot bod. Will Mike redeem himself and win the love of Brooke, or open a bigger club in Miami with Dallas and be damned?

It’s tempting to think that the melodrama would be more convincing with a Brooke who wasn’t so dead-voiced and robotic (Horn is the daughter of the Warner Bros. president and COO, of which you can make what you will), but I don’t think even Jessica Chastain could sell this silliness. No, it’s better to think of Magic Mike  as arty but energetic soft-core porn, with no pickle shots but plenty of juice. You should see it if only for McConaughey, an underrated leading man who finally gets a chance to use his strange timing — not rat-tat-tat but a teasing, self-infatuated drawl — for maximum creepiness. Watch him take the stage on the club’s last night in Tampa, savoring the audience’s desire, conducting their screams like a virtuoso, the whore as master of the universe.

Magic Mike stars' hair removal woes

Friday, 29 June 2012

Matthew McConaughey and Channing Tatum didn't enjoy being waxed for their movie

Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer claim removing their body hair was the worst part of playing male strippers.

The hunky actors all star in Steven Soderbergh's new film, Magic Mike, about the dark side of male stripping, and didn't find being naked on stage in front of a room full of screaming women the worst part.

Alex, 22, said: "Oh my god, I don't know how women shave," adding that his skin was irritated for weeks.

Matthew and Channing opted for a chest wax.

"I don't know what movie could make me do that again," Channing said.

"One time is enough for me," echoed Matthew.

British actor Alex also had wardrobe issues.

"I don't know how you wear a thong. It's one of the most uncomfortable things in the world," he said.

True Blood's Joe Manganiello, who also stars in the film, claimed: "Anything a man does in a thong is funny."

Saw it last night. Loved it. Seriously, not like it's BBM or anything, but it's been a long time since I've seen a movie for which I felt unqualified approval.

Well, maybe a tiny bit qualified. Frankly, a couple of the main characters are slightly blah for my taste. And the plot wasn't exactly full of non-stop-edge-of-your-seat thrills.

But I was pleasantly surprised by Channing Tatum. And Matthew McConaughey was fantastic. Picture Joel Grey in Cabaret, except exposing much more skin and looking and acting like a caricature of Matthew McConaughey.

I saw it with an opening-night audience of mostly women -- who, hilariously, reacted to what was happening onscreen only a notch or two below the reactions of the onscreen strip-club audiences. For example, early in the film when Channing Tatum gets out of bed and walks away to the bathroom ... Whoooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Visually, there's not much to complain about in this movie.  ;D

Saw it last night. Loved it. Seriously, not like it's BBM or anything, but it's been a long time since I've seen a movie for which I felt unqualified approval.

wow, you had quite a different experience from me. I actually cringed in my seat the actors were so bad (Matthew being the exception) and would have left the theatre wouldn´t I have had to climb over 20 teenage girls to get out ;D

But it did made me want to watch The Full Monty again :D

I was pleasantly surprised by Channing Tatum.

I understand he really can dance (I guess now we know how come ... ). I think one of his earliest movies had something to do with dancing?  ???

Glad to have your take on the movie, Katherine.  :)

Thanks, K. I am seeing it on Bargain Tuesday. I am not expecting Great American Cinema, just some pretty boys that I like with pretty bodies and doing some pretty dance moves. I expect the $5 will be money well spent.

Really? I would have stayed for Matthew alone. Another character he slightly reminded me of is Heath's from Lords of Dogtown.

As he gets older, Matthew is wisely acquiring that appealing subtle hint of self-parody, a la Alec Baldwin, Jame Spader and William Shatner (who, of course, has more than a tiny hint of it). Even Tom Cruise is trying out some roles that go in that direction, which is good because, the older he gets, the more he may need it.

And yes, Jeff and Roux, the dancing is really pretty impressive.

Okay, first off I will say that I am glad I saw it, after about 4 months of anticipation and being a huge fan of Matthew's and a regular-sized fan of Channing's.  It was worth the $6 morning-show admission.  However, about 15 minutes' in, I found myself waxing poetic for the level of acting brought forth in "Showgirls".  I *wished* that "Magic Mike" could have "Step(ped) Up" (one of Channing's first flicks, Jeff) its game to even *that* level.  I'm with Monika.  It was BAD acting all around, with the exception of Matthew's performance, which I don't think entailed a whole lot of acting on his part.  The only strippers of the group of six (or seven?) that I found attractive were Matthew and Channing.  The rest didn't do a thing for me, no matter how much they pumped, thrusted, and gyrated.  Others will differ with me, I'm sure.  Why attempt to introduce a plot which only served to interrupt what all the ladies (and some men, alone) came to see?  All of the dances were only snippets and teases; we never even got to hear a full song.  Channing's hip-hop moves were acrobatic and quite stellar; that boy has some serious rhythm.  I'd have paid about 10 times as much to watch just him doing his moves/dances for that hour and 50 minutes, with introduction of each song by the sexy and charming Matthew.  Now *THAT* would have put the cream in my coffee this morning, if you know what I mean.  ;)

I thought he was pretty good, too, but not enough to save the movie. I saw him on Leno doing promotion for the movie and also expected to see more of him in the movie.

agreed - especially regarding Tom Cruise. He was great in Rock of Ages.

The half naked boys just didn´t do it for me - a personal preference I suppose, but I have always found striptese alone to be more funny than sexy.

I feel exactly the same way. I'm not into male strippers at all, and my liking of the movie had nothing to do with thinking they were sexy.

Magic Mike,  in the words of New York 's David Edelstein (http://www.vulture.com/2012/06/movie-review-magic-mike.html?imw=Y), is Steven Soderbergh's "latest parable of how capitalism transforms sex into a soulless commodity." It is also the movie in which Channing Tatum strips. He's not the only one getting naked: Matthew McConaughey, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer, Joe Manganiello — everyone loses their clothes, repeatedly, throughout the movie. This is the point. And so to help you truly understand Magic Mike,  to really boil the film down to its essence, Vulture tallied all the various instances of nudity and made some charts. Thongs! Math! It's all waiting for you below.

And the totals:

Bare Chests: 59
Bare Asses: 3
Bare Breasts: 4 (two each from Olivia Munn and Mircea Monroe)
Thongs: 14
Penis Pump Money Shots: 1
Shadow Money Shots: 1
Assless Chaps: 1 (McConaughey)
Marilyn Monroe dresses: 1 (Tatum)

Well, I went for the hot bods. I certainly wasn't disappointed, but you could say that I stayed because I thought the movie was, in parts, very funny. And I thought Matthew McConaughey was absolutely perfect and absolutely hysterical--and intentionally so. I laughed fit to piss myself at his character's antics.

Something that struck me as ironic:

Spoiler alert!

To the best of my knowledge, Matt Bomer was the only gay actor in the cast of principals; add to that, "out-partnered-and-raising-kids." Yet his character was the only one who was married. As in, "to a woman."  ;D

I also found the ending a little bit unsatisfying. I went into the film understanding that it was based on Channing Tatum's experiences as a stripper when he was, what? 19 years old? But maybe, for me, inspired would be a better word than based. I figured Alex Pettyfur's character, Adam, more-or-less represented Tatum, but, apparently, at the end, Adam wasn't getting out of the business, as Tatum clearly did. That's OK, I guess, but I found myself caring as much for Adam as for Mike, maybe more so, and I would like to know what became of Adam. I guess he went to Miami. ...

Box Office Report:
'Ted' Earns Record $54.1 Mil;
'Magic Mike' Sizzles With $39.2 Mil

Both films wildly overperform, while Tyler Perry's "Madea's Witness Protection"
also pleases with $26.4 million; overseas, "Ice Age: Continental Drift," "Amazing
Spider-Man" and "Ted" begin rolling out to big numbers.

Smashing records and setting off early holiday fireworks, Seth MacFarlane's Ted  debuted to a massive $54.1 million at the domestic box office -- the best showing ever for an original R-rated comedy.

It wasn't the only R-rated winner of the weekend. Steven Soderbergh's male striptease dramedy Magic Mike  likewise overperformed in a big way, grossing $39.2 million. It's the first time in history that two R-rated movies opened north of $20 million on the same weekend.

(....)

Magic Mike  -- confirming Channing Tatum's rising star status and loosely based on his early days as a stripper -- also has plenty of reason to celebrate. The Warner Bros. pic generated intense interest among females, who made up a whopping 73 percent of the audience. Women of all ages turned out, with 43 percent of the audience over the age of 35.

The Magic Mike  cast also includes Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer. Warners acquired North American rights to the film for $7 million.

"This is a win-win for all of us, and Steven Soderbergh hit it out of the park," Warners president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said.

Magic Mike  earned a B CinemaScore.

Coming in No. 3 at the domestic box office was Brave,  which fell 48.7 percent in its second frame -- some box-office observers say moms were otherwise occupied with Magic Mike  -- to $34 million for a 10-day domestic cume of $131.7 million.

Why

a Marilyn Monroe Costume in

In a film filled with outrageous costumes, one scene in Magic Mike  still manages to stand out for its sheer non sequitur weirdness: when Channing Tatum shows up to Alex Pettyfer's apartment dressed like Marilyn Monroe. Why? "That to this day still puzzles me," admits the film's costume designer, Christopher Pearson. "That was an idea of Channing's, and I just said 'Okay.' It’s something to do with the red, white, and blue, and rah-rah America. I just thought if Channing wants to get into a white Marilyn dress, rock it out. I want to see that, too."

Fair enough!

Pettyfer: I want to be like Newman

Thursday, 5 July 2012

Alex Pettyfer said Paul Newman is one of his role models

Alex Pettyfer has revealed he would love to emulate Paul Newman's career.

The British actor said the late star, who combined acting with directing and political activism, was his biggest role model - aside from his dad.

The 22-year-old told Men's Health: "I love that (Newman) is a great role model and a humanitarian. I admire people who don't necessarily want to change the world, but try to make it a better environment."

Alex - who is engaged to Elvis Presley's granddaughter, model Riley Keough - added: "I'm very ambitious. I live in reality but I have dreams I want to fulfil.

"I want to be a director, and I've already started my own production company. But I also have a measure of success that I keep to myself. It's something very personal to me."

Alex also revealed he went too far when bulking up to play a stripper in new movie Magic Mike.

"I started off at 169 lbs and went up to 196 lbs. They told me I was too big, so in the end I had to take it back down to 185 lbs."

Next up for Alex is political drama The Butler, in which he stars alongside Liam Neeson, John Cusack and Nicole Kidman.

“I think there’s a change in how straight men are willing to be physically objectified and want that kind of admiration,” Mr. Ayers said. “They are happy to have gay men find them attractive.”

‘Magic Mike’
Is Big Draw for Gay Men
By ERIK PIEPENBURG
Published: July 4, 2012

Shachar Keizman, an audience member, took his shirt off at a screening of “Magic Mike”
in Manhattan last week.

Men flirted and showed off their muscles through tight-fitting tank tops. Women with no shoes gyrated next to men with no shirts. A D.J. played deep beats. Shachar Keizman, 24, climbed atop an armrest and peeled off his shirt to reveal a chiseled torso. People screamed and stuck dollar bills in his shorts.

Then the lights went down, and Channing Tatum got naked.

Clearview Chelsea Cinemas, a cineplex in Manhattan, had become a makeshift gay bar. It was Friday night, and four theaters were showing “Magic Mike,” the Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s new movie about a troupe of male strippers. The pouty-lipped Mr. Tatum, who has been open about his past as a stripper, plays the title character.

“It’s a fun night out with a bunch of gay friends to go see a movie about hot boys,” said Aaron Rhyne, 32, a theatrical projection designer who saw the film with about 10 friends. “We’ve been throwing the trailer around, laughing about it.”

Aaron Rhyne saw the film "Magic Mike" with several friends on opening night.

Mr. Rhyne wasn’t alone in organizing a group. While the scene at Chelsea Cinemas may have been more raucous than most, interviews around the country indicated that gay men have been flocking to “Magic Mike” in numbers not seen since the release of “Brokeback Mountain” in 2005. But unlike that film, about two cowboys in love, there’s nothing explicitly gay about “Magic Mike.” Unless you count muscled men thrusting their pelvises without pants. That was enough for Bill Venne and his friends.

“Let’s be honest: it’s men taking their clothes off,” said Mr. Venne, 49, who lives in Minneapolis and saw “Magic Mike” on Sunday with 16 gay men and one straight woman. “It’s the kind of thing you want to see, but not by yourself. A middle-aged gay guy in the audience might as well be wearing a trench coat.”

Released by Warner Brothers at a cost of $7 million, “Magic Mike” finished second at the box office over the weekend, taking in about $39.2 million, a stronger-than-expected showing. (“Ted,” Seth MacFarlane’s film about a crass teddy bear who comes to life, was in first place, with an estimated $54.1 million.) The reviews for “Magic Mike” were mostly positive. Manohla Dargis, writing in The New York Times,  called it a “funny, enjoyable romp about male strippers and the American dream.”

The movie has been on the gay radar since the production was announced this year. Mr. Tatum, one of its producers, appeared on the cover of the gay magazine Out,  and the trailer has been posted on gay blogs. The film was also promoted at gay pride events across the country last month, like the West Hollywood, Calif., parade that featured a “Magic Mike” float. At the Chelsea Clearview over the weekend, where a stripper-theme photo exhibition was on display, giveaways included “Magic Mike” clothing, posters and dog tags.

Sue Kroll, president for worldwide marketing for Warner Brothers Pictures, said the studio coordinated a “well-concentrated and tailored” campaign intended to capture gay moviegoers’ attention. The demographic wasn’t part of the studio’s initial marketing push, but that quickly changed, Ms. Kroll said, once it became clear there was interest among gay men.

“Every single one of my gay friends was talking about how they couldn’t wait to see it and how gorgeous Matt Bomer is,” she said, referring to the gay actor who plays a stripper in the film. “It wasn’t like we sat down and said, ‘This was the target.’ But we handled it a bit more specifically and overtly for this movie.”

Warner Brothers hired the Karpel Group, a New York entertainment marketing agency, to generate buzz online and at gay bars and clubs. “Hot guys are a big part of the appeal of the movie,” said Craig Karpel, the company’s owner. “It’s something that captures gay men’s attention and imaginations.”

The film’s trailers were an essential piece of the campaign. Dennis Ayers, the editor of AfterElton.com (http://AfterElton.com), a pop-culture Web site owned by the gay cable channel Logo, said users of the site hated the first trailer because “it was marketed as a romantic comedy” that focused on Mr. Tatum’s relationship with the female lead, played by Cody Horn.

“It underplayed the reason why gay men would be interested in the film: the male stripper,” he said. “But their marketing changed, and they played up the male form part of it.” That included a red-band trailer, reserved for mature audiences, that showed Mr. Tatum’s posterior.

“I think there’s a change in how straight men are willing to be physically objectified and want that kind of admiration,” Mr. Ayers said. “They are happy to have gay men find them attractive.”

Ms. Kroll said Mr. Soderbergh and Mr. Tatum were “100 percent supportive” of the movie’s outreach to gay filmgoers. “A lot of actors who are at this point in their career might hesitate to make this movie,” Ms. Kroll said. “They don’t want to mess with the broad appeal they have. But Channing’s taking off his clothes, talking about his past and supporting the movie. He’s confident in who he is.”

As much as the movie winks at a gay audience, it was still mostly women who went to see “Magic Mike” over the weekend. According to the database BoxOfficeMojo.com (http://BoxOfficeMojo.com) 73 percent of the audience for “Magic Mike” was female. And around 60 percent of women who saw the film went with more than two other people, according to a spokeswoman for Warner Brothers.

Roger Gore, 42, said the gay quotient was low when he and five friends saw the movie in Nashville. “The women were hooting and hollering in the theater,” said Mr. Gore, an-owner of Arrow, a male strip club in Nashville that closed in 2010. “We were a little more subdued.”

Donnajean Ward took a group of straight women and gay men to see the film in Washington.

“It was sexy and fun,” Ms. Ward, 49, said. “But I don’t think anybody walked out of it hot and bothered.”

One of the few straight couples in the audience in Chelsea on Friday was Abraham Fellner and his wife, Diane. She ran an exotic lingerie boutique in Manhattan called the Secret Self that closed four years ago.

“We used to sell things for strippers,” said Ms. Fellner, 78. “I want to see how it’s evolved.”

Mr. Fellner, 87, said he knew the film “was something about male strippers or what have you.” But he also heard it was about “a critique of capitalism.” He added: “That caught me more. I’m interested in ladies, not men

In New York they do. Especially in the gyms--they are showing off.

Unlikely.

We live in a society where there are few outlets for men to prove their worth. One of those few outlets left is fucking. Nature dictates that the most attractive men and women are the ones who are most likely to have the opportunity to fuck. So guys go to the gym to make themselves attractive enough to get laid. They flaunt their potential prowess before other men as a form of competition, not because they want homos to think they are gorgeous.

Ask your average Joe what he thinks about the idea of some queen jerking off while picturing him naked, and he'll lose his lunch.
