I never saw or heard about this 2001 public service video on Canada's OutTV. That's the great thing about Youtube - this stuff gets found and republished there!

ok...WE loved it...LOL!!

You mean...14 views and one reply? (as of the present?) :)
Even though there was a definite quality of spoof (and I think Philip Morris had SOME grounds to comment on the references to their 'intellectual property' -- such as the text and font of the words -- I think the spot was using it to make a very valid point about diversity among cowboys. Including ethnic diversity.

I liked that they had different guys on there...it was a cute spot..
but also kinda tender...when he cupped the guys chin? that was sweet to me.

I just want to know why the one was pounding a fence post on a fence that already had the rails in it! Something a little unconvincing there. They didn't know a hyperanalytical BBM crowd would ever be looking at it. Jess, I know you know how you would build or fix that kind of fence!
I liked a couple things which may have been unintentional but actually gave a more realistic, less ad-perfect look to it. Like that cheap, shapeless cotton glove. Or the strips of fluorescent lights in the stable.
Given that there were these little semi-spoofs circulating before the film, it's less surprising that there was all that pre-film hysteria about queering the cowboy image. They weren't prepared for a full-length story, that was not a spoof.

The thing that bugs me is him leading that horse with the reins over its neck...you take them over the head when you are leading...they don't go over the neck til you are ready to get on...
so I am not sure....do you like it or does it offend you?

Thanks for posting this Andrew. You're right there's so much out there, the world is just so big that we never see it all. Gotta love YouTube. I really liked it. I have to say that is one of the nicest, most tasteful and sexiest HIV awareness spots I've ever seen. Shame we can't all live some place like that. I'd love it. Phooey on those hypocrites at Phillip Morris they don't own the image of the cowboy any more than John Wayne did.

I like it, Jess! With that setup, we are made to expect something very different -- and it turns out to be about people taking care of themselves, not about "coffin-nails".
-
I like that it was made in 2001..so it wasn't really a spoof of BBM...just has the same theme...
-
No, I meant this 2001 spot was (partly) a spoof of Philip Morris. And a year ago when there was all the talk about BBM and not many people had seen it yet, there were people who were assuming anything that came out about cowboys who were gay, would be a spoof or an attack on tradition. And of course there was absolutely nothing about the film that was a spoof. And if it 'attacked' anything, it was only reductionism about the significance of the cowboy. And it only attacked in the indirect way great art attacks anything reductive, by showing us something richer and truer to life and more interesting.

oh!...sorry didn't get that first...duh..LOL
BBM COULD have gone so bad..thank God Ang Lee got the call to do it...

That is one fine commercial, Andrew! Thank you for finding it and sharing it with us.
