Title: Can you guess the . . .crowd?
Post by: Front-Ranger on June 13, 2020, 04:10:07 pm
A new game! And I put it in the right place, for once!

Are you like me, getting all nostalgic when you see pictures of crowds? People enjoying rubbing shoulders with each other, laughing and singing, not stand-offy or suspicious. Well, here we can post pictures of crowds and see if others can guess the location and/or event. I'll start. This was an event a few years ago, and if you look closely, you can guess what was happening!

Is it Larry McMurtry in his bookstore in Archer City, Texas, in August of 2012 at an event called The Last Book Sale (the name a reference to The Last Picture Show, which was filmed on that site) where he sold about 28,000 books from his personal collection?

Just a wild guess.

OK, how about this, as a reminder that rubbing shoulders in crowds has its downsides.

Well, it appears to be something that happened in San Jose, so I'll guess the riot by antiwar protestors outside a Nixon campaign rally in 1970. Nixon himself fanned the flames, according to H. R. Haldeman's autobiography: https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/10/28/nixon-protest-law-and-order-221920 (https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/10/28/nixon-protest-law-and-order-221920)

The location is about 40 miles from San Jose. It wasn't an antiwar protest/riot, and not connected to Nixon. The year was 1969.

Is that the so-called Woodstock West concert?  Was it the Stones? Jefferson Airplane?  Someone was killed.  Hell's Angels were "security".

Excellent work, Paul!

The Stones' concert at Altamont Speedway represents the dark violent side of the '60s, just as Woodstock was the peaceful happy side. The Stones were winding up a U.S. tour and wanted to end with a free concert, a la Woodstock. On the advice of the Grateful Dead, they hired the Hell's Angels as security. The Angels hit and knocked out a member of the Jefferson Airplane at one point and when the Grateful Dead heard that, they bailed without going onstage. Santana, Crosby Stills Nash & Young and the Flying Burrito Brothers also played, but supposedly there was a bad vibe throughout; the musicians had to keep pleading with the crowd to settle down.

When the Stones went onstage, they kept having to stop playing. "Brothers and sisters, why are we fighting?" Mick asks the crowd. Finally, while they're playing the Hells Angels stabbed a young man named Meredith Hunter. The whole thing was captured on film by the Maysleys Brothers, documentarians who just happened to be doing a film about the whole tour. The film, Gimme Shelter, is excellent -- my second favorite concert film, I think.

There it is! If I threw in a few quotes from Keith you'd have the research paper I wrote for a college English class.

Your turn ...

I'd guess the same. That brickwork in the background looks familiar. Besides, it's Pride month. And, I'm not joking, I'd swear I saw that blond in the crowd in a documentary I saw on PBS last week.

No it isn't. I don't think there was a need for any dogs that night.

Hint: the event that caused this crowd has generated a diagnosis.

Yes, but what actually happened?

The bad guys tried to seize a thousand cans of surtromming and they were surrounded, so they took the canners hostage.  The canners became pals with the bad guys cuz they didn't like surtromming and were happy to get rid of it. They thought the bad guys were performing a service to the country.

I think I like Paul's version of the story better than the real thing! The origins of the controversial Stockholm Syndrome are interesting to read about:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stockholm_syndrome)

I read that there is an opposite called the Lima Syndrome, where abusers develop sympathies for the abused. Also, that the kidnapped people in the Swedish case distrusted the police and government, and for good reason!

But these are not the kind of crowds I'm nostalgic for. I'm thinking more along the lines of this, when people gathered in droves to look at an armless woman:

Scared me for a second before I scrolled down to the picture. Because after all, there was a time where people would gather in droves to look at an armless woman. Or even better an armless, legless woman. But I don't imagine you're nostalgic for "freak shows."

I love Stockholm Syndrome, especially because it reminds me of this cute anecdote involving my older son. Sorry everybody, but I'll quickly share it. He was like 5 and we were watching an episode of The Flinstones where, I can't remember the exact details but a dinosaur bursts into their home and throws Fred out, but the rest of the family grows to like the dinosaur.

My son, watching, goes, "Stockholm syndrome."

(I know that plot sounds kind of like the scenario in the opening credits, so I may be confusing them. But whatever it was, Stockholm Syndrome was an accurate description.

That's why my father hates cats--because when and where he was growing up, cats were put out at night. They would poop in your garden and then uproot you plants as they tried to cover up the evidence.

Are we guessing Lee's crowd around Venus de Milo?

Yes, the correct answer to my challenge was the crowd outside the bank in Stockholm where a robber took bankstaff as hostages for several days in 1973. When they were released they expressed loyalty to the robber and coined the name Stockholm syndrome for that condition.

Perhaps Lee might say it's a particular moment at the Louvre, but I'm getting antsy for the next challenge. When Lee returns, if we haven't yet solved her mystery, we'll go back to that.

But in the meantime, what terrifying historic event are these folks witnessing?
