Title: del Mar Painting by b73
Post by: littleguitar on November 22, 2006, 12:30:19 pm
Is anyone else reading this story? I wanted to post a new thread for it (well, really I think all of Maggie's stories should have their own threads...)

Be warned, it isn't for everyone, but I love it. It's an AU!AU cannon mix with Jack as an employee at Ennis' painting business. They become a little more than boss/employee though  ;)

It starts here http://b73.livejournal.com/52764.html (http://b73.livejournal.com/52764.html)

Hey there, I've been reading this too. I really like it. I know that it's not everyone's cup of tea, and that there has been some heated discussion about the nature of the Ennis/Jack relationship and their... well... 'terms of endearment' for want of a better phrase. However, if we we all liked the same things the world would be much duller.

I've only recently discovered Maggie's work and I think that she is a wonderful writer, although reading her stories, beautiful though they are, is often as painful as watching/reading the original.

I like the idea that her Ennis and Jack are revisitations of the original characters, reconnecting through time.

I do hope this one has an upbeat ending.

Karen

OMG please sign me up for stock in del Mar Painting! I just "discovered" this fic thanks to Mandy. It's great - well-written, sweet, and funny - my favorite combination. I'm so glad that you have continued to write more chapters, Maggie.

favorite line !!!

"Is that so," I say. "Is that a fact. You really expect me to believe you wasn't pantin' for some a this all this time." I run my hands down my naked self, smilin' at him bright; I know it's braggin' to say so but I'm damn good-lookin', and I know no homo like him gonna be able to resist me." -Jack, del Mar Painting - by b73

Yeah Mandy, wish I had done that too! And the paint colours too, I know there's a chart now but there have been chapters after the chart was put up. I'm going to go and write them all down. They are SO brilliant  :)

I know it may sound weird and crazy but I LOVE DMP so much it sometimes just hurts.

That looks good, you can crop it if you want and make it square, I'd like to be able to see his face, but it can say whatever you want! You are awsome Leslie  ;D

So what did you all do to get her to friend you?  ??? I hope this is not a case of people having to belong to and be accepted by a certain clique to be a reader  (in which case I'm *so* not interested. That kind of thing and the related wank-fests pretty much ruined another fandom I was a part of for the longest time...)

I would like to read DelMarPainting and has left a request to be friended, but so far no response.

I don't like cliques and I certainly don't belong to one and it ruined a fandom I'd belonged to for months too  :(   I'd never read any of her stuff before DMP so she didn't know me at all. I just friended her and she friended me right back. I know she's really busy now maybe she doesn't pay attention to that kind of stuff on her journal atm  :(
Aww I feel for you, it's such a shame you can't read it  :(  And I really don't have any idea what else you could do  :(
Title: Re: del Mar Painting by b73
Post by: coffeecat33 on December 13, 2006, 05:24:47 pm
I friended b73 and then left a request for her to befriend me as a comment. The first 20 chapters are not locked (unless she did it in the last day or two) and so you should be able to get started.

As far as being a clique, it's not. I think Maggie just wants to avoid potential problems as there has been some drama in FanFic-dom. It's ridiculous as far as I'm concerned but there have been serious consequences for some writers and it's just not right.

Thanks for your replies!  :)

I've done what you did, so I'll just wait and see. Could well be she's just busy and can't deal with "fans" every day of the week.

I've read all the non- flocked chapters. Of course I really like them! Love the chipper, no-nonsense, verbal-style tone of Jack's story-telling throughout. And those paint colours!  ;D

Title: Re: del Mar Painting by b73

LOL, there was debate over the daddy thing for a while, some hate it, some love it  :D (I love it  ::) )

She started friend locking around ch. 26 because of a plagarism discussion and it was all kind of ridiculous but left Maggie really upset so she's locked this particular story. you should be able to just comment on one of her non locked ones and asked to be friended. All I had to do was friend her and she friended me right back even though I had never even commented on any of her stories before.

God I don't even want to know about all the shit that is going on about ff writers accusing each other. Apparantly there is a lot going on on the other communities about ff writers accusing each other of all these things, at least that's what I caught from the comments at the end of chapter 25. It should all be fun, don't you think? Some people take this much too seriously.

None of the accusations of  "plagerism" make any sense to me. After all, every BBM slash writer is infringing on copyrights. Lines and scenerios are pulled from Annie's original story and the screenplay and that to me is plagerism, not if someone used a similiar situation. I tried to read & enjoy and stay out of some of the back stabbing - or back slashing as it were.

I loved the paper Jack wrote. I know some others didn't, but I thought it was really important for Jack to do that, it helps him work out his own feelings and was probably cathartic in a lot of ways.

Oh no, I am sorry, it's a misunderstanding, I haven't done anything to friend her yet, I was just reading your posts about what happened in the next chapters and then I started wondering if maybe I did want to read on (at first I thought what the hell, I am not going through the whole thing of having to friend somebody to read her story). And I was too busy writing my own stories the past couple of days to even think about this story.... am I making sense? I don't think so. Can you friend somebody from your own livejournal?

She must have a lot of friends now...

Well, Mandy and I have been having a discussion about "Del Mar Painting" and how it's kind of difficult to do our own writing after reading Maggie's story, so maybe you want to wait.

Yes, there's a menu at the top of your LiveJournal about adding friends. If your LJ is public, you might look and see if someone has added you as a friend, too.

I've been reading slowly and surely through all the flockled chapters, becoming a bigger fan of DMP Jack and Ennis for each new chapter I've read. Love the lighter tone of this, Jack's exuberance and high spirits, - the lunchbox pictures and the paint colour names. ;D  Love Scooter and Matt. And equally love the serious undertone and the more difficult themes and emotions. And the references to canon J&E.

I'm really happy that Maggie continues to write so steadily.

I've started to read her other stories. Read Lake Geneva all in one go the other day. It was so wonderful  :) So gorgeous. So sweet, SO Maggie. Really had me in tears a couple of times, but it has a wonderful ending  :) And I want to get started on Union Pacific, Signal Crossing and Catch the Westbound which are completed. They are supposed to be brilliant but really sad and heartwrenching  if I remember correctly  :( So I really have to be in the mood to start on those ones.

June they are incredibly sad, but there are also moments of joy... I definitely think this one is worth the heart break, that series is my favorite of all of her writing (though for a happier ending, check out Portrait of a Farmer/Unseasonable Storm...)

I read and liked Lake Geneva.

I too have to 'prepare' myself before I read intense, sad stories like Union Pacific.  cc33

I know what you mean Leslie... and I was not prepared at all. I had no clue what this series was about, only knew that I liked Maggie's writing. I'll be honest, this one hurt in the same way the film did. I've never cried so hard at a fan fic...

Sorry, I don't mean to scare anyone away from this story. I think it is absolutely beautiful and is well worth the pain, but I also don't want anyone to go into it thinking it will end happily like some of us went into Mason and Dixon because we were told the ending was joyful.

Oh God  :( I knew it was terribly sad so I am prepared but *this* sad........omg.... I know it's a favourite of many Maggie fans,  Helen's been telling me to read it too but I don't know......this kind of angst.... :(

I thought the Union Pacific trilogy was just the most amazing story.  Yes, it had what you might say a sad ending...but, it wasn't sad like the film.  Ennis isn't left alone in a trailer-like existence for ever more., which softened the blow for me.

There are some parts of it, especially in Catch the Westbound, which have the most amazing prose you can imagine, it really is sublime.

oh sorry, yeah I didn't mean to imply that it was like the film in that way, thanks for pointing that out Helen!

I just meant that it is one of the only fan fics that has stayed with me in the way the film has emotionally... if that makes sense.

I totally agree about the prose... it blew me away.

oh, and to friend someone you should just be able to go to their user info and there will be a little icon at the top of the page (I think it's a person with a plus sign?) Just click it...

or you can comment on one of maggie's other chapters and ask her to friend you.

Have enjoyed the story so far...Like how you punched it up by having the boys resemble their Uncle and Cousin, and how Uncle Ennis reacts.

Please add me to your "friends" list...I'ld like to finish the chapters with you.

Thanks.

I just wanted to give this a little bump because that last "reverie" was beyond belief. I think it was my favorite one yet. How is it that Maggie can make me smile my face off and sob all in the space of a few paragraphs. The ending of this reverie made me so sad  :'( But there is so much hope too, and we know this is forever for Jack so I have to hope that what Ennis fears will never come true.

Ok, through rambling  ;)

I love DMP. I don't know how Maggie finds the time to spoil us with such right and true new updates every day, but I love and appreciate that she does do so. And the last few chapters, - the birthday, the college planning....... the driver's licence!!! - both of them coming to grips with the consequences of Jack's increasing maturity has been as astounding as ever. And then some.  :-*

I really love the way Maggie describes Jack maturing... it's like I can see it happening. And I know this was a lot of chapters ago, but I loved when Jack first says his beard is getting thicker and there is more stubble at the end of the day now and sometimes he rubs it across Ennis' shoulder. Those aren't the exact words, but that moment has stuck with me for about 10 chapters now. This fic means so much to me.
Title: Re: del Mar Painting by b73
Post by: Mikaela on December 28, 2006, 07:28:27 am
I've been re-reading some of Maggie's other fics and I was reminded about the angst they all have in common -  those long painful canon-like periods where J&E are apart and without any sort of contact, pining for each other, trying to move on but not managing to.... Absences nearly always initiated by Ennis and based on a number of reasons, society's demands, fear and misunderstandings, Ennis's inability to accept himself and  cope with what he's found in Jack...

Anyway, I know DMP was written to be an antidote to all the heavy angst, with a much lighter and more positive even humorous tone and plot. But re-reading the previous fics (which are absolutely stellar, and so moving they all hurt the heart) made me worry that DMP might end up taking a turn for more angst and hearbreak as well, despite Maggie's original intentions.

I'm just wondering where DMP might be going from here. Ennis's qualms about being gay and in a relationship seems to mostly have been conquered.... J&E are in a loving, caring relationship if ever there was one..... they're making viable plans for the future..... They've got some good friends, slowly expanding circle of friends even, and family memebers who care......lEnnis's worries that Jack will move on from him have been calmed if not completely removed.... They're in a pretty good place.

I fear that either the fic is winding down or something bad will happen to our heros. I sure do hope I'm wrong in this. I'd like to see the fic go on and on and on and to read about their developing sweet life together *forever*!!

Perhaps there will be more focus on J&E's interaction with other characters (friends and family), and what happens to those characters instead..... ???

I loved that bit too Mandy...how it showed that even though Jack was getting older and that Ennis liked his youngsters...he was still turned on by jack and his stubble - because it's Jack. :)

I also love now in the last chapter Jack seemed so much older and more mature; the shift between young man and man is heading towards man, and although he is still the same funny, lighthearted, jokey person there is much more maturity within him.  I love that he is also changing from calling Ennis daddy all the time, and called him boy in this last chapter. He really took charge of the situation, was very strong in his determination to show Ennis that THIS is the real thing, and he doesn't want anything else.

I'm the same age as Ennis (well, I was until he had his most recent birthday! LOL) and I can really understand where he is coming from with thinking that Jack will one day get fed up and leave.  But it must be SO SO frustrating for Jack to not be taken seriously like this, for his feelings to be almost invalidated by Ennis's doubt.  I liked the driver's licence, and like Jack think yes, just what the hell else can he do to prove this to Ennis!!  That he's here for the duration.

But so wonderful taht Ennis will come with Jack wherever he goes. :)

*sigh*

I just read the last chapter and I was undone. I can't get it out of my head-trying to figure out why the tears, why the tight chest and pounding heart. And then an hour later it hit me. The anniversary of my first viewing-coming out of the movie with the lonliness and want of a love that strong and destined. The last chapter of DelMar Painting gave me that same feeling. That lonliness and longing-but not in a bad way. I love how this stuff moves me.

I guess I'll have to read the whole story now  ::)

Happy New Year my friends!

I don't know what to do either Mikaela. I really don't. The ending was SO beautiful but I felt so damn lost and emotional last night. I still do. I read the last three chapters in one go and I felt devastated, was crying my eyes out *SIGH* And like Roux, this story has moved me as much as the movie has and I will never forget it and it's oh so sweet and truly beautiful painter boys. And I can't thank Maggie enough for this overwhelmingly beautiful gift. I feel she's poured her heart and soul into this story and it'll certainly be in my heart forever. God, I can't believe how emotional I am about all of this.

Thanks for the New Year wishes Roux!  :-* The same to you  :) and everybody else!  :-*

BONUS EPILOLOGUE!

In case you haven't checked, Maggie couldn't leave the del Mar Painting boys alone & there's a new page up on LiveJournal. No fears about a bad ending. I don't know how she does it, but I'm glad she does.

I too am saving this whole novel-length story in Word. Haven't thought about getting some of these stories bound but it's a good idea.

LOL. I just read the new bonus chapter too. We sure don't waste any time when it comes to Maggie's new offerings. Somehow I've got the feeling it won't be the last DMP bonus, either - at least that's what I'm really hoping.

Poor Jack is once more commuting more than 4 hours every day!?! Eek! So much time wasted! He simply needs to get his own business closer to home like he's hinting at. And wee need to hear all about it. Would be so much nicer for him-  and Ennis-, (and he would get to actually officially name new paint colours too if he remained in the same line of business...) and would be VERY nice for us if Maggie let us share in his business development not to mention their continued home-on-the-range life.

**fingers crossed**

This I loved, it's so true and so Ennis:

Anyways, as I was sayin’. Should see him out on the farm, dealin’ with customer, even the bratty little kids: he so mellow, so calm, so--well, manly, if I do say so myself; such a stalwart cowboy ‘n all, just like somebody outta a Western or somethin’, seem to me like the men bow down the women swoon ‘n the kids fall back with awe when he ‘round.

And then this, so beautiful:

But the thing I think them customer would really be unable to picture is that same Marlboro holdin’ his boy in his arms ‘n whisperin’ things to him not even Romeo say to Juliet, then kissin’ that boy’s face like he a angel ‘fore lovin’ him so deep boy feel like he die ‘n gone to heaven.

Still waters do run deep ‘n true.

My Marlboro Man, my Daddy—my Ennis.

Haha, I LOL at Scooter being like that during labor  ;D

But what hit me the most is the way Ennis was affected by little Buddha   :) sweet little Jackie  :)  It made me cry too, it was SO loving and special.

He hold the kid like he been ‘round children all his life; ‘n he close his eyes ‘n sorta touch his forehead to the baby’s, whisperin’ to it like he tellin’ it somethin’, ‘n somethin’ ‘bout it make me feel like I wanta cry.

Kid don’t fuss in Ennis’s arms; ‘n like he seem to open his eyes at Ennis, ‘n it like they seein’ each other, ‘n knowin’ somethin’ that me ‘n Scoots left out on.

At last, like in a daze Ennis give the child back to its momma

I'm SO glad they still get to have their day off together  :)  And the ending was just sheer perfection  :)  Absolutely beautiful   :)

This story just stupifies me. To think I almost by-passed it...

I want to write Maggie a love letter because I know she got dragged through the mud on this one (as if anyone's story has no elements from other fics-good grief!). I think she needs a-piece-o'-cherry cake.

Did this make anyone else want painter Jack and daddy Ennis to raise a little one???? Ok, maybe I'm insane, but they both just seemed so sweet holding Crackerjacks Jr.!  ::)

I am coming to the end of delMar Painting and what a wonderful journey that was. Timing is everything and this one must have come at a time when I needed it because it. like "Somebody New" touched me in "that" place. For something that was supposed to be just light and fun, it was so much more.

Did you wind up finishing it Leslie? Did you get through "Boxcar"? I started to re read this whole series, got to Catch the Westbound about a week ago and stopped, the window is still minimized at the bottom of my computer screen just waiting for me to have the courage to open it. It's a beautiful story and, honestly, probably the story I've been most affected by out of all the fic I've read... but it still takes some working up to.

This blew me away... it takes serious talent to write myths and to use that tone and voice that Maggie used in that story. As Helen said on LJ, I'll never look at constellations the same.

Hi! I'm new to the DMP series (really I just started reading it yesterday) and its soooo good!!! I know that you have to friend the author to read the rest of the chapters...do you need a live journal account to do that? Well, does the story have a happy ending at least if I never get to read the rest? I'll be happy if I just know that they're together in the end.  ;D

I don't know if it's OK for me to say this, but Mandy (Littleguitar) sent me the locked chapters (in Word format) because I could not for the life of me get friended (something I could not figure out even if I have a livejournal), but I could forward them to you, courtesy of Mandy? Wow - I hadn't seen that photo of Ennis before. I really love it and the expression on his face is priceless. Well if Maggie doesn't continue dMP she certainly gave us a good run for our money. She was only going to do - what - 7 chapters? And instead it's 40 or 50.

She still managed to get plenty of angst into dMP in addition to the joy and fun. Honestly, my heart couldn't stand to go through another Catch the Westbound. (sobs)  :'(

I don't even wanna go there.

Great last chapter of dMR-I had tears in my eyes over the video Jack did for Daddy's birthday. I also laughed my ass off (well, no, it's stilll there) over some of the descriptions-Scoots, Matt and JJ and the Addams family when they got out of the car, The Munsters meet Bonanza when Scooter was confronting Cassie Cartwright and "his Momma like dumbass" to JJ when she goes after Cassie. Tears and laughter-what more could you ask for.

I know, I'm disappointed too...

I'm definitely going to miss dMR, but I'm also sad because it just seemed so final, like she's finally written everything she has to say and we won't get anything else from her, not dMR or anything new either. Maggie's stories have been an amazing part of my life and I don't want to lose that. And I'd just be sad if Maggie weren't around anymore.

I wasn't that depressed about it until I re read her post. Now I'm just hoping that she's right, and she says she done then all of a sudden she's writing something else.

I still feel I need to read about Jack and his own painting business and about Matt and Scoots and little Buddha moving to the country....

Oh well, we'll just have to wait and see *sigh*

Oh no!!!  :o :o

Of course Maggie should do what feels right to her, she's given the fandom so many wonderful fics already, if she never writes another word she's still one of the pillar of quality BBM fics. She should certainly not write fics just because she somehow feels obliged to do it in order to not disappoint her by now considerable fan base. But.....  well, let's just say that while I'm grateful for all the previous and wonderful fics,  I'm keeping my fingers firmly crossed that inspiration will suddenly strike once more!

The only story Maggie wrote that I had the privilage to read was Jack of Hearts and I really really love the way she writes!!!!  Unfortunately I came into the fandom to late and by then she had already deleted her b73 journal.  I think shes not letting any new people into her jacksraven journal either, is she?

Aww that would be so sad if she deleted her new journal too, she is an amazingly talented writer!!!!

I was really hoping somebody saved "del Mar Painting" in Word and could share it with me.  I didn't start reading BBM fanfiction until she had already deleted her b73 journal so I never got the chance to read that one.  I was lucky enuff to get some of her other stories from that journal but I really want that one!  If you know anybody who has it can you let me know?  Thanx sweetie!!!!   :-*

Hugs,
Amber

there's something about Maggie's stuff that always makes me sob helplessly.
I'm about 50 pages into The del Mar Painting andn modern Ennis and Jack have just met "our" Ennis who is in his sixties.
Reading about old Ennis made me bawl my eyes out. The thought of him ash grey, alone and living without Jack for years and years with the knowledge that he will never meet him again....

Love this story already, specially all the nods to canon. And I was glad to see that the idea of Ennis and Jack being reincarnated through out the ages, starcrossed born over and over again and never complete without the other, in this story too. Makes me feel so sad and hopeful at the same time.

(from Jack´s POV. Modern day Ennis and Jack meet old Ennis del Mar)

Dinner serve finally damn who serve beans with Thanksgivin’ dinner? “No more beans,” I say under my breath to Ennis, not thinkin’ anybody but him gonna hear me; but Uncle look up at me like scared, open his mouth; close it again.
We all set there silent durin’ dinner, the uncle hardly touchin’ his place, just glance at me now ‘n ‘gain then look away real quick and I wonder what wrong.
Maybe I look like him, I think; maybe I look like his dead boyfriend. I realize then I shoulda never come here.

OMG.   :'(

I only got the chance to read the first couple of chapters but that part sounds so beautiful and sad all at the same time, I just gotta take the time to sit down and read it all in one shot!!!!

Maggies writing is absolutely fabulous, she manages to leave me with my jaw on the floor and gasping for breath and squirming and sighing and sobbing all at the same time.  She is so gifted, I would give anything to be able to write like that!!!!   :)

I only have a few pages left of The del Mar Painting and I´ve taken a break. I want to enjoy the feeling of still having more to read of this fanatastic story for a few more minutes.

I have no idea what I´ll do when I´ve finished. I feel broken and fixed all at the same time. Damn.

I finished a while ago and now I'm all like so now what?

Sorry for clogging the thread but I don't have any RL friends that are into fan fiction so this is my outlet when I need to vent.

Loved this story of B73 as well. Her style of writing is so free and loose. And I never doubt a word of what she writes, she as a writer has my absolute attention and trust throughout the reading. Everything she writes is so intense that sometimes I think I forget to breathe. I sob, laugh, cry and grin while reading. It's like I imagine it is to go to a therapist. Only better.

I have to admit, I read a few chapter of DelMar Painting and couldn't get into it.

I need to try again and I am out of stuff to read right now !!!

Of course, I do go back and re-read some of my favorites allllllll  the time.

Oh, a fellow addict ;D

Yeah, I go back all the time too. There are some fan fics I just can´t get out of my head and that I love to read over and over again.

I hope you´ll get into TDMP this time!  But Maggie has her own style and it might not be everyone´s cup of tea, though I personally worship it :D

If you decide to give it another chance, keep us updated!

Ok, I am officially brainwashed. Today I was checking the job adds in the newspaper and there was one where a company want to hire a painter. The thought that immediately ran through my mind was "damn...I want that job"
   I could just see myself in white overalls, painting with Ennis and Jack. But then I remembered that I really don´t know a first thing about painting...

I´ve been rereading this one over the last few days. It drives me nuts everytime I read it!
Every time "our" old Ennis is mentioned I weep like a baby.

I´ve also noticed I´ve started to adopt stuff that Jack says, like Y-ello and crazyass and dumbass. Maybe there comes a time when one ought to put a fan fic down before it´s too late?
