Title: Solstice Songs anyone??
Post by: newyearsday on December 14, 2006, 11:27:18 pm
I wonder if anyone knows of any songs that celebrate the Winter Solstice....I'm really into the book The Mists of Avalon, set 1500 hundred years ago during the reign of King Arthur, and it's making me want to research any ancient songs of more pagan or earth-based worship.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Light is returning
by Charlie Murphy

Light is returning, even though this is the darkest hour
No one can hold back the dawn.

One planet is turning, turning on a path around the Sun
Earth Mother is calling Her children home.

Let's keep it burning, let's keep the light of hope alive,
Make safe the journey through the storm.

(Jenny, I can sing it for you over the phone if you want, it's an easy peaceful melody.)

What a beautiful song...

Its words are so remniscient of the ancient traditions of Yule. The yule log was kept burning through the darkest night of the year, to guide the Sun-child back from its journey through the Underworld.

I used to have a book of Solstice poems.    Can't seem to find it anymore.

"I say Live, Live because of the sun,
the dream, the excitable gift."

I remembered that line from a poem Anne Sexton wrote.  It was in the book.

Never heard of any Solstice songs. Wouldn't they have some on a Celtic CD?  You might want to conduct a search on AMAZON.com.

I couldn't get thru the THE MISTS OF AVALON. It came out in the mid 1980's I believe. I bought it during the early part of the summer thinking that this will last the whole season as the book was so thick.  It told the Arthurian story from the women's point of view, correct.

Maybe I should try WAR AND PEACE instead.  ;)

I think George Winston has a CD called Winter that is very beautiful. Also, I am listening to Sting's Songs from the Labyrinth which features the lute compositions of John Dowland. Although they date from the late 1500s they seem very relevant to both the Christmas and the solstice somehow.

I have written more about this on Anything Goes under Music News.

Thanks, everyone. I was thinking, "I wonder if anyone will reply to this message," and then I've got all these great replies! Warms my heart. One reason I wanted songs with words (rather than instrumental music) is that my family has a big tradition of singing Christmas carols together for about an hour on Christmas Eve, and I wanted to put a little balance into the tradition with the Solstice songs.

Yes, Mists of Avalon is long, but I love it! I've got about 200 pages to go, and I'll be sad when it's over.

Elle, I might just take you up on that offer! It'd be a great chance to talk, too.

It's a great book. Marion Zimmer Bradley, the author, is one of the Founding Mothers of the Society for Creative Anachronism, the medieval/Renaissance re-enactment/recreation of which I'm a member.

Would one of you like to start a book club thread about The Mists of Avalon? I just went up to my daughter's aerie to look for it, and I found High Priestess of Avalon and three or four other books with Avalon in the name, but no Mists of...I know we have it around here somewhere, as well as the movie, but my daughter informs me that the movie is far inferior to the book and besides, ew, it has Morgana having sex with her brother! That would certainly turn off my daughter completely!!

Spoiler Alert: The Mists of Avalon

I know we have it around here somewhere, as well as the movie, but my daughter informs me that the movie is far inferior to the book and besides, ew, it has Morgana having sex with her brother! That would certainly turn off my daughter completely!!

Well, so does the book. That's where the movie got it from. But it's not like she just decided to go out and have sex with her brother. It's a religious ritual, it's a very important plot point--and she doesn't know it's her brother when she's having sex with him. There's nothing creepy or icky about the way it's depicted, and I hope no one will let this be a deterrent to reading a really great novel.

Winter Moon Rapture

cleanse my wounds in winter moon desire
this endless quest for sanctuary pure
as formless levithans swim avernian seas
crystal citadels call me in my dreams
desolate epochs, the statues they weep
through eons passing, the guardians still sleep
the towers of silence
a fortress of strength
this wealth of compassion
would ease my descent
my heart greets forests, once sacred, profane
the earth my mistress in pleasure and pain
seeking solace in the glory that was
of hidden shrines to gods now lost
amongst hopes ruins to find my true place
I orphaned of heritage a man of no race
cleanse my wounds in winter moon desire
this endless quest for sanctuary pure
drown nights sorrow, in rapture divine
enchantment delirium, and yet do I seek
winter moon rapture, the ebb of her light
but I cannot see, for the tears in my eyes
winter moon rapture, the ebb of her light

It's a great song, quick to learn, and catchy tune.  If you call, and I'd love you to, remember I'm on East Coast time for now.  Earlier in the day is better for me.

Wow, David. That's beautiful, and sad. It's definitely up my alley these days. Is it a poem or a song? Who wrote it? Where can I hear it if it's a song? I want details. Thank you again, very much.

Yay Elle, I will give you a call tomorrow. I didn't know you were on the east coast! Are you in New York?

Would one of you like to start a book club thread about The Mists of Avalon?

Yes, I would be interested in doing that. Though I can't devote much time to it, I am hungry to talk about all this stuff. By the way, I'm completely agreeing with Jeff's take on the scene described above; and some of the book is also making me re-evaluate where our so-called morals come from in this still-patriarchial culture. In college I remember reading about tribes in various cultures that practiced strict marriage between cousins across family gender lines...hard to explain but basically it was very good if a daughter married her father's sister's son or a son married his mother's brother's daughter. Something like that. All based on controlling the female resources in the tribe, however...

Back to The Mists, it's really opened me up to take a longer view of humanity's existance, which I tended to look at before as if anything more than three or four hundred years ago was practically ancient. But now I feel quite close to these characters from 1500 years ago, though I wouldn't understand a word they said if their real language were used in the book.

It's also made me more curious about Atlantis, which I had only heard vague things about, and now that I've done a little research (it's mentioned in the book a couple of times) I'm enjoying the idea of an advanced civilization existing 12,000 years ago. Who cares if it sounds crazy? What do we know of what happened? We think we know so much with our empirical evidence and scientific methods. I'm open to the idea that we know very little in the big picture.

Here's a solstice song!

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right

Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it's all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes...

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it's been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it's all right
It's all right

It's a what?  Oh, well, the lyrics sounded good though.  ;D

I, too, have read The Mists of Avalon and the Forest House by Zimmer Bradley.  While I enjoyed her feminine pagan POV on things (I adore her Firebrand, the story of the fall of Troy from a woman's POV) her books depress me.

I suppose it's because they're somewhat historical fantasy novels.  Regardless of what powers the women have in both the natural and supernatural worlds, what secrets they share, what freedoms they have, you know they're going to lose it all.  Her characters know it.  Very few of these women of these secret societies are committed to their way of life.  Her novels teem with women who just want to be kept, who are easily swayed into letting men do their thinking for them, women who break their commitments to be with men, men who do not share and do not want a world where women have a place aside from being a 'helpmeet' and a man's property.  You'd think her female characters would appreciate their world more and be willing to fight and die for it.

Good one Del!!

I love that song.

Having only read Mists, and not even all of it yet, I can't really debate your points above, ****SPOILER ALERT***

but as for Morgaine and Viviane, they seem like trustworthy keepers of their faith, as much as they can be with the travails and hardships of life (read: Morgaine's leaving Avalon to spite V and then not really being ready or able to return for 18 years). She seems ready to die for it (not that I necessarily take that as the high show of loyalty in all cases). And though Igraine seems to falter and go meekly into the convent  after Uther dies, I love how she goes back to supporting Avalon fully and curses the patriarchial priests as she's on her death bed.

Happy almost Solstice, everyone!

In Wicca, as part of Yule celebrations, this is traditionally chanted whilst gazing into the cauldron, prior to igniting it. More an incantation than a song, I guess:

I sorrow not, though the world is wrapped in sleep.
I sorrow not, though the icy winds blast.
I sorrow not, though the snow falls hard and deep.
I sorrow not; this too shall soon be past.

I had a low moment last night, with some not-very-rollicking existential angst, something I've learned not to let take over.  This would have hit the spot well, I think.  Thanks Kerry.

If there's one thing worse than "existential angst," it's "not-very-rollicking existential angst"   :(

I hope you're feeling better today. Imagine all the wonderful, exciting adventures ahead for us all in 2007!

Yes, I'm much better.  It was really probably less than ten minutes of yuck.  And I do have many, many blessings.

Hope you are having a wonderful summer.  I remember an interview I saw with Heath where he talks about celebrating Christmas in Australia in "a singlet,"  something I had to look up to know it meant tank top here in the US.  :)

Hi Clarissa,

Yes, today is indeed a glorious high-summer day here. Perfect "beach weather," as we say. Days don't get much better than  this - crystal clear aquamarine sky, a few fluffy white clouds, glorious sunshine, approx 23C (75F)  ;D

Ideal weather for a picnic or day at the beach. And yes, just right for wearing shorts, a singlet and thongs!  :-\

Don't blush! (LOL)  In Australia, "thongs" are what we call the rubber, flip-flop footwear that's so common here   Everyone from age 1-100 has at least one "pair of thongs."

I believe Heath and Michelle are in Oz at present and are, no doubt, wearing just this kinda "clobber" (apparel!)  :o

I read in the paper that they were attending the wedding of Heath's father in Perth, Heath's home town. From the pics I saw in the media, they donned their "glad-rags" (formal attire!) and didn't wear singlets and thongs to the wedding! Hee-hee! LOL!   ::)

Gah, sounds like the kind of weather we're still having in Texas.  Up until this week, we were all in shorts and short sleeves.

Didn't Heath stun his American audience into dead silence once when some morning show personality asked him what he did for Xmas in Australia?  He replied something that was highly suggestive, such as he and his mates putting on thongs, grabbing weiners and something else.

The studio audience went dead silent and they quickly cut to a commercial where Heath had to do a lot of explaining.  :D :D :D

Singlets are usually (though, not always) worn as under-garments (by men), and are most often white. They are sometimes worn as outer-garments by blue-collar workers and are then mostly navy-blue in colour. They have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity by young inner-urban trendoids recently, who have buff gym-toned bodies to show-off, and are then in trendy pastel colours such as watermelon, lime and primrose   ::)

Heath wore a traditional Aussie singlet in Brokeback Mountain, in the bedroom scene with Alma, where she tries to convince him to move into the flat above the laundry (he co-ordinated the singlet with cute pyjama pants - LOL). "Weiner" is a word not in common usage in Australia, though we know what they are from American television and movies   ;D

Kerry, thank you so much for this one. It´s only November and we already have snow here in South Germany.

But I might as well need these lines (and silently chant them) in bad times. So, thank you!

I think Heath was being interviewed on one of the American chat shows, if I remember correctly, Clarissa.

I remember thinking at the time that Heath was being deliberately provocative and trying to shock the audience (in a cheeky, cute kinda way haha), 'cause he would have known full well that what an American calls a thong (brief underwear) is completely different in Oz, where it's footwear! And the word "wiener" is totally unknown in Australia, but I believe it has a certain double meaning in the USA?  :D

I too love the winter, Dagi. I actually prefer it to the summer. However, what we call winter here in Australia, is probably a very mild, lesser version of a European winter. For example, it never snows in Sydney, where I live. I've only seen snow once or twice in my life, and that was when I was on holiday in the Snowy Mountains, approximately 6 hours drive south of Sydney.

I love storms, hail, rain, thunder and lightning. I love being safe and warm inside while a fierce storm rages outside.  :D

Yeah, nothing better but sitting with a mug of hot chocolate in front of a fire while it's snowing outside! And after this extrovert summer time with no clothes on and being outdoors all the time I really need time for introspection and quietness.

You're right, Lynne.  Actually, the song is from 1944, written by Frank Loesser.  It was included in a film callled "Neptune's Daughter" in 1949, recorded by Ricardo Montalban and Esther Williams, and won the Oscar for best song.

It's been recorded by more than 100 "couples", including, bizarrely, Mae West and Rock Hudson at the 1958 Academy Awards.  Oy.
