now what do you want to talk to me about you don't want Garry to see??
-
the roads were wet all the way up, but there was no ice on em - rained a little fer half an hour, went through some fog - another half an hour - mostly just a cloudy day all the way.
Actually started the trip at 5:20 this mornin, a full 80 minutes later than planned- & I was tired - usually travel with my sister - not this time - & stopped ta rest my eyes a couple a times along the way - still took just 30 minutes more than planned - 8 and a half hours
-
dang...that is a long drive. I didn't realize you were having to go that far...
I notice you been posting in your threads,,,you gonna get in trouble?
-
now what do you want to talk to me about you don't want Garry to see??
Nothin - just like chat, I don't care ta have our conversation recorded for posterity
BTW - you might notice more typos than usual - my brother's computer is permanently set ta french type - so I hafta think a where the letters are on a french keyboard
Even worse, his letters are all faded & some of what I'm typin I need ta do from memory a where the letters are suppose ta be
-
HUH?? His keyboard doesn't have the same alphabet? French people use abc's don't they??
-
dang...that is a long drive. I didn't realize you were having to go that far...

Hope not - don't think my brother bothers about things like posting history - besides - he don't have my password (ta photobucket, anyways)
-
aw you got your pics in private mode!! My photobucket acct is public...of course I don't have anything exciting ::)
-
HUH?? His keyboard doesn't have the same alphabet? French people use abc's don't they??
fer example - the "é" is right next ta the right shift key
the "`" accent, ta make either a "à" or a "è" or a "ù" is next ta the enter key () my computer, but on this keyboard, there's an extra key "<" on that line
even more difficuly is the coma & the apostrophy, nd the quotes - there at a different place than the english keyboard - GET THE PICTURE!!! it's a real mental exercise!
Add ta that my usual horrible typin skills & it all makes for a difficult effort
-

everybody just needs to learn English and it will all be good...

Didn't I tell ya - it's 650 KM north a Toronto - roughly 450 miles miles - wait the math is wrong - must be closer ta 750 km!

Look I know all about French!!

so who is cooking Christmas dinner? When do ya'll open presents...do ya'll open presents??
-
so who is cooking Christmas dinner? When do ya'll open presents...do ya'll open presents??
OK here's some of our holiday traditions:
First - there's the midnight mass - which hasn' been at midnight in over a decade - could be 8 pm or 10 pm - not sure, this year
then comes the openin a the presents - we aren't at my parents's place for the first year ever, seein as we sold the place like 2 days ago - so it's happenin at Daniel (my brother - where I'm stayin) & Denyse's place.
After that comes the "réveillon" - a large meal - near midnight - when we were younger we'd also stay up - singin, talkin, playin board games until the wee hours a the mornin, but now we basically don't do much except eat - OH BTW - I'm responsible fer preparin the "réveillon" - though Denyse (I think) has already prepared the turkey & bought the meat pies
To be continued ...
-
you 'think' she has the turkey??? Roland it is two days away!! you best be finding out!
are you sad about the house? does it feel more real now? that must be hard. I have always envied people that had a home. We moved so much when I was little there is really no place I feel like being home..
-
Then on Christmas day - there is usually a small lunch, and the family with in-laws have supper with their in-laws while my sister & brother (who chose not ta come up ta Timmins this year) prepare the Christmas meal with me for us unattached sibblings (I have one more brother who will likely join my mom & me for the Christmas meal) - for which I am again responsible ta prepare the meal - again at Daniel & Denyse's place
Ya see it's all about eating and talkin
Oh BTW, D&D usually finish visitin with denyse's parents quite early (7 pm) and spend the rest a the evenin on christmas with Daniel's side a the family
TBC
-
ok...getting confused
you are at your brother's Daniel
you have a sister that lives in Timmons too
and ANOTHER brother who did not come home this year?
Right??
-

I said I wasn't sure who had cooked the turkey - daniel or denyse - of course there will be turkey - they KNOW I can't cook it!
"Sad" - no but it does feel strange - my mother certainly felt strange when she last visited the place (daniel sent us an e-mail sayin how she just look from the kitchen table into the living room and shook her head for a long time) - she's been livin there for some 57 years!
"More real" - dunno - maybe a little surreal
Yea - it did feel like there was always a place in timmins - the homestead kinda thing - you may not have had that for yerself, but ya made one for your kid - gotta be proud a that!
-
yes...it even has an ATTIC with all the leftovers of years of living for D to have to rummage thru when Don and I leave....little memories of our lives...the sad times and the happy ones. Things we never told him about...
You have no idea how much that means to me...(well maybe you do) :-\
-
Oh yea - ta continue
Then on Boxing day (That's a real holiday in Canada - an English tradition, but we francophones don't mind another day off too) Daniel & Denyse have always hosted the boxing day meal.
I have a large familly - we were 8 brothers & sisters, my dad was from a familly a 8, my mom was from a family of 11, and most of the aunts & uncles settled in Timmins - so growin up, we would start visitin each other's houses on saturday & sundays 2 weeks before Christmas and it would last until mid january until we had had supper at all the relatives places! a bit a that tradition has been maintained, My other sister (with kids) who lives in Timmins, usually offers up a New Year's Day dinner - but I'm usually back in Toronto by then
-
ok...getting confused

Right??
Sort of - Gaëtan lives in Toronto, and Jeannine lives near Toronto, in Niagara Falls - they didn't make the trip this year
And another brother André hasn't made the Christmas gathering in a few years either - usually visits in early december - from Montréal
-

if we were in chat I would tease you about that large family!! 8) :P
but hey! I won't...
My grandmother had something like fourteen kids...but only ten survived that first year.
and what is Boxing day? Ya'll big on fights??

You may think they are memories but will D?
When we had ta clear the house before selling it - most a what we didn't take was called junk - & went ta the dump! - sorry ta burst yer bubble - maybe ya should go through what you think is important "memories" & share it with him Now - before you forget about what is important ta ya

uh uh...that is the deal...he has to plow thru the junk himself...like ya'll did!!
some things I am sure he will never understand...but that is ok too...
(in particular a little wore out yellow nightgown...I mean it is a rag...but it was Britney's favorite nightgown...or the little white blanket with a satin edge...she would rub that satin back and forth over her upper lip..comforting herself when she was going to sleep.)

Go ahead & tease - the warning is up about this bein a private thread
BTW there was a reason for large famillies in french canadian history - it was ta preserve our culture & our language - ta prevent assimilation - it is reffered ta, in history books as "La revanche du berceau" - loosely translated - the revenge by multiplying of children ------ see, Canada was CONQUERED by the british - there was no contact with France for over a century. All imigration to Canada was from the british Isles - specially after the american revolution - so ta preserve who we were - our leaders (the church - priest & bishops) told our people the importance of having lots & lots a kids - & it worked! - until the last half century ...
-
and what is Boxing day? Ya'll big on fights??
Don't know where the name originates from - just know it's a british tradition
-
I think that is what the Mexican immigrants are doing down here...
and that is not a hit at all Hispanics...just not real happy about all the illegal immigration we have here...
-
Know what jess - I'm thinkin that this thread might have been interestin readin for others - about My christmas traditions, and (his)story. Maybe I should move the thread rename each title into the open forum - whadayathink?
-
I was thinking it would make a nice blog....you do have interesting things to say Roland...other people would enjoy hearing you, you know...
how about Our Daily Thoughts??
but anywhere you want is fine to me. I think it is an excellent idea..
-
I think that is what the Mexican immigrants are doing down here...
and that is not a hit at all Hispanics...just not real happy about all the illegal immigration we have here...
Not sure that it's the same thing - we french had colonized canada for 2 and a half centuries before the conquest - we were born here, as were our ancestors, so they may be having babies like crazy down there - but it's NOT to preserve their culture in the land of their ancestors - they're doing it in the melting pot that is the usa.
Here in Canada - the immigrants have more kids than the other canadians with longer histories, mainly (I think) cause we're too lazy ta do the job a raisin mor than one or two kids. Sure we cite the cost a raisin kids taday - but the immigrants have more than a couple a kids each family - not concerned with the cost - more ready ta sacrifice for them...
-
there was a study done a few years back...said that the more educated you were the less kids you had.
which makes sense to me...my relatives have nothing else to do but make babies.... ::) :-X :-X
-
I thought you were changing the name??
-
In case ya hadn't noticed, Jess, We are now live - EXPOSED !!! ta the whole a BetterMost. I moved the thread! ta yer suggested forum (which is what I had intended, but had misnamed!)
So watch yer pees & cues, missie!

Sad ta say - intollerance a that nature would NOT be tollerated in CANADA! - not sayin it wouln't happen - just sayin it's a lot less likely ta happen here - dependin on where ya are in this country too. You can get married anywhere in Canada, but can ya hug anywhere? May be ya could!
-
not down here...not at Walmart...sad really.
and I know I may be too paranoid....but lort all it takes is a couple of drunk yahoos with nothing better to do...
-
ya know - Gilbert's (yea, yet another one a my brothers) 2 kids probably had some similar lack a "homestead" experience from their parents - but they got it from my parents - they useta eat their lunches at recess so that they could come and have lunch at their grandparent's house (just 5 blocks away from school). They would chose ta spend saturdays with their grandparents, evenings, anytime they could at that house - guess mom had quite a lot ta think about after living 57 years in that house - that was, BTW to a large extent, buit by my father & grandfather.
Speakin a grandfather - oh wait - that's for another post!

ok Sherazadee!!
-
Don't think I've ever told ya, but there's fame in our history too - well sorta fame, and sorta recent history ...
I was raised in a house just two doors away from where my mother was born - yep - my grandparents lived two doors away - built the house hisself - they gave birth ta all 11 children in that house (and here's the incredible part!) And when my grandparents retired to "The HOME for retired people" the family sold the house to Mr. Twain! - Shania's adopted father. yep THE Shania Twain was raised in the house that my grandfather built - two doors away from where I was raised. Tourists - when visiting Timmins - visit the Shania Twain Centre (Museum) and do a slow drive by of 44 Montgomery - the house my grandfather built! Cool hunh?
-
that is cool....but I thought you didn't listen to country!!
-
that is cool....but I thought you didn't listen to country!!
I know that she's sold more albums in the 90's than anyone else - her style may seem country ta ya - but to the world, she was more a pop singer, like John Denver in the 70's and Glen Campbell before that. Of course I know the names a the big artists - even own a few recordins a them - don't mean I like Reba or any a the newer recordin darlins a the country world - Anne Murray too was considered country - ta me she had a country sound, but mostly she's just sweet soundin Anne
-
BTW - notice the new title change! I should a been in bed hours ago - everyone else in the house has been ta bed - expect Daniel ta wake up soon ta kick me off this machine
-

*gasp....choke*
you don't like REBA!!?? Are you insane? Have you heard "I Guess the World Ain't Gonna Stop (for my broken heart)" ???? I mean REALLY...
you like Shania but not Reba??
I am sorry but I don't think we can be friends no more...sorry ;D ;D
-
Don't feel like ya need ta disown me. I only bought one a Shania's albums. Don't have a Buck Owen (died this week I believe?) and can't even name ya any a the other more recent C&W fellers - but then I don't listen ta much a anythin that's been released since 1990 (exeptin the brokeback mountain soundtrack, a course)
-
LOL!! I like Shania ok as long as I don't have to watch her videos...but you know I don't like ANYBODYS videos....don't like going to concerts...just want to hear them on the radio or whatever...ruins the whole thing for me to see a video.
I am just teasing you about Reba...but she is a great lady...(or at least her public face is great)
HEY...you went and edited some of your entries!! don't think I didn't notice!! LOL!!
-
HEY...you went and edited some of your entries!! don't think I didn't notice!! LOL!!

I don't know how to change the title!! let me go look...
but hey I LOVE the EXPOSED the best...I was a little confused about the cafeine part until you said that about being up for 23 hours!! LOL!!
-
so changing the title on the main page doesn't change it on individual posts!!
-
actually the Jess & Roland's not-so-Cool Room really tickles me....I don't know what Don is gonna think of that!!
I know one thing he is gonna say "Who the HELL is Roland?? that is a new one!!"
LOL!!
not so cool!! that is funny!! :P

Well that just takes the cake!
Here I am writtin on my brother's typewriter, where I can hardly read the letters, and the program is set up fer french typin, instead a english, and whereas I usually do tons a typos (in chat) I'm doin a fine job a not only typin english, but Ennis english - and postin about 5 words ta every word yer postin, and ya hadn't figured out that was wired!!!!!
Yer slippin, girlie!
Oops This is the quote I intended!

well it is hard to tell the difference, Roboy!! ;D
admitting you like Shania is one thing...but you quoting yourself kinda seals it...
-

Nope! - however, if ya save it (copy)(Ctrl and C) ya can easy post it (paste) (Ctrl and V) after you've pressed modify on the post for which ya wanna make changes

good lort that is gonna take a minute or two huh? we couldn't just put a note at the front to ignore the Private thing?? :P

My! my! You are the lazy one - don't ya think I didn't do that too! What do you think is implied by "what cafein can do ta a person!" hunh?!!!!
Ya might at least wanna go check it!

Ah had ma 4 - nearly 5 hours a sleep - been up fer half an hour already - You still in bed? - southerners - need their beauty rest I guess - even farm lasses. Wait - I remember readin Garry sayin that the boys let ya sleep in on Sundays - and not everyone gets by on just 4 or 5 hours a sleep a day. Ah'm sure you'll say yer howdydoos when ya finally get yer tired old bones outta bed later taday.
I slept really well in that twin bed (I'm usta queen size, myself) that Daniel's kid gave up fer me. Usually sleep poorly in a new bed but when yer sleep deprived, ya can sometimes sleep on yer feet lika horse, Ah'm told

first you call me a lass....then you talk about my ol bones....what you trying to say..Iam an old girl?? Said like that it sounds not so good!! >:( ;D
I am not too late! considering I went to bed at 1:30!
-
So what are yer plans fer today?
Everyone's gone ta church (It's Sunday, ya know) & Ah had ta turn on the computer on my own - got the english typin format - so I have ta reajust my typin thoughts again.
I'll be show'rin while they're gone (6 of us in the house - gotta space out the showers) & this afternoon will start with the potato salad, the macaroni salad - seein as they need ta be cookeg & cooled - start workin on veggie platers & pickle platters - likely ta have some help from Denyse & Gabrielle (their daughter) & possibly Christian (their oldest son). Also gotta be out a the way for their supper preparations - it's actually a smaller house than mine in Toronto, where there's sufficient room for whenever they come ta visit (roughly once a year lately)
Told em about our conversation last night, the history a bettermost - my moniker "Sheriff Roland", that I had started namin em by names - seein as there are so many of us - it was gettin confuson. Daniel said that on his site "the Beardsley site" - where he too spends way too much time, he has reffered ta his sibblins by name as well.
Now those refferences ta you tired old bones, and girlie, or lassie, I don't see any contradiction - tiredness can occur at any age (so, no intention a yer bein old was intended) and youngish appalations could be intended as references ta yer state a mind, not necessarely yer actual age - either. (Guess I'm still bein a little snipetty)
Oh and Boxing day - fergot ta mention - occurs on december 26 - big bargain shoppin day here in Canada.
-
I know you didn't mean nothing by that ol bones remark..I was just teasing you.
Sounds like your family is actually pretty cool...did you tell them you stayed up to 2??
LOL!!
see you have that big family...I have just the four of us...easy to keep up with ya know...

There's usually lots a snow in Toronto, and I don't have a digital camera, but Daniel does ... I'll ask him if he can lend me the camera tomorrow and see if I can take some pics - Don't know that I'll be able ta send em though, as he's havin trouble puttin em in the computer (& I couldn't help him either, though I believe my cousin Mitch, who was here for the Boxin day supper has helped fix problems on his computer)
-
we sometimes get a dusting that lasts a day or so...always thought it would be cool to go on vacation somewhere where there was real snow...
wouldn't want to have to work in it or live in it for long!

But I'm sure yer also aware a all- or at least some- a the things for which I am extremely grateful ta be canadian

Don't ya remember having anounced ta everyone (like it was some kinda illness) that I was a stander, not a fixer?
Well fer all the good america's done, the social state a yer country ain't attractive ta someone who's benefited from the social standards a canada. We certainly don't have all the answers, but we're listenin, and we are changin - with regards ta health care, gay rights, imigration, and quite a few other areas - We've licked the old age penssion problem some 15 years ago - the states have yet ta discuss the problem ... No I'm a proud canadian
-
Oh yeah??
well we have lots of good stuff too!!

wait I am thinking!!!

nothing here...I want to here about this six course meal you cooked (all by yourself) for thirty people??
I think it was chicken??
OK - it was fer 15 people (at least that's what I was sayin - though I really was expectin 17, but ended up with just 12)
let's see - there was patato salad, veggie salad, macaroni salad, bean salad, - the warm platers included portuguese flavoured chicken, mashed patatoes, peas (can't have a happy meal withough peas!), lemon "flavoured" (and way over-cooked) steamed broccali & cawliflower
& desert - and that was Wednesday's meal - not Christmas day or eve's meal
-
dang I am impressed! you ARE pretty handy with a can opener!! you do all that by yourself??
-

Did none a the cleanin - afterwards - and bryan helped with with instructions fer the chicken. 2 a the salads were left-over from Christmas, but yea - it was my offerin'
Now what was on the menue fer yer little 4 people gatherin on christmas day? hunh?
-
we had a big meal at my sisters the night before so I just baked a ham, some mashed taters, rolls, green beans...then sliced up the left overs and we had sandwiches for supper that night...
lemon pie for dessert.
nothing fancy; Thanksgiving is our big meal...
-

Well david the start of it may be interestin, and that's why it was moved ta the public domain, after we had started the private conversation (as we had been doin in chat fer a bit) - can't remember why we went the post route that time, but as I recall, we felt it was private enough, doin it on the administration thread durin the Christmas season, when few people were around. Turned out I was sharin a lot a my culture up in those posts, and I was thinkin they were probly lots like a blog - thus the tranfer ta this forum, instead a just deletin the whole exercise, which is probly what I had in mind when we got it started.
Glad yer enjoyin it.
-

That's one of the things I found so interesting about it Roland; your culture. My Mother was 1/2 French Creole and 1/2 Lakota Sioux. We often celebrated our French heritage at Christmas, and your descriptions of Christmas in your family conjured many wonderful and happy memories for me!
..... AND of course, Jess' posts were interesting too! :D

Awright
Just to let you all know ... Daniel's got some 300 hunderd figurines, 'bout 50 buildings, some 500 accesories and more than a dozen nativity scenes, including the one that use to be long to our parish (before they closed the church down)
And if you look closely at the tree, you'll see many of em cause it ain't really a Christmas tree, but a multy layered figurine display.

-
my goodness Roland - that is AMAZING!
- I'd hate to ahve to dust that though!!
and this thread was a year old yesterday - happy belated birthday!!!
-
some details of the area between the tree and the huge nativity scene
(http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/roboy-0/Home%20Pics/Noel07/07-12-23-05.jpg)
Again, and better in this picture than the last, you can see the the faux christmas tree is just another opportunity to display more buildings and figurines
BTW, Kelda, I don't think they bother with dusting ... The displays stay up for about 5 weeks then gets put away until the next year.
-
You want globe pics, My hosts have snow globes ...

No this is not a store picture - It's in their living room, on the oposite wall from the tree and large nativity scene
-
Joyeux Noel cher Rolland and to all too!!
J'aime ta crèche avec les grosses figurines!! I like that manger with the big figurines!
And would enjoy turning those snow scenes!! Oui, oui!!
Tu as des bons plaisirs!!
Hugs!! Merry Christmas to you and to all, plus many hugs during these GayHolidays!!

Here's another collection of figurines called 'All Through the House' - larger figurines than the rest (6 inches instead of 1 inch). I like the small nativity scene near the tree and the large houses of the village near it ) most a em are to the left of the picture. Oh, and the picture in the background is another small detail added by Daniel.
-
I would have SO much fun setting those up...and I would be
playing uh I mean...STAGING them over and over...
-
I would have SO much fun setting those up...and I would be playing uh I mean...STAGING them over and over...
I asked Daniel & he told me he starts setting em up after Hollowe'en and only takes em down at the end of January ... so sorry Kelda for the misleading info earlier
-
That is a very lovely display Roland. And my how time consuming to put it all up... thank you for that.
-
And they've got mangers
(http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g14/roboy-0/Home%20Pics/Noel07/07-12-23-12.jpg)
