Hey everyone,
I am hard at work on my continuing saga, "A Love Born From Steel." (For those who have missed my posts and haven't read the story, but are interested, here is the link:

For the part I am working on now, I need to know Monroe's last name. I checked my screenplay and the credits and he's just...Monroe. So help me out, guys--what should we name him?
This isn't really a contest since I don't have a prize, but I still thought we could have some fun with this. Enjoy!

Monroe Lesmann. Less man? get it? :P
He needs a weak name.
-
Lesmann doesn't sound Wyoming, though.
-
How about Wanger?
-
How about Wanger?
Wanger or Wagner?
I do want it to be realistic! LOL
-
Wanger..but Monroe Wagner sounds better.
-
Monroe Waxman :)
-
I always got the impression "Monroe" was his last name, but even Alma Sr calls him that.
:P

Hmmm, interesting...but in my story, it has been set that Monroe is his first name so we need a last name....

Monroe Madison

Monroe Madison
Hmmm, interesting but still not zinging me...
Tom you are new here, ya like fanfic? I wrote a single story which has turned into a more elaborate tale....if you feel like glancing at it, your thoughts are welcome. Link is in an earlier post.

.....Monroe Weston. Weston is the name of a town 30 miles southwest of Lightning Flat.
-
Maybe something simple like..Clark.
-
I'm with deedee. Anderson. Johnson. Something plain might be good.
Baxter. uh...
-
How about something like Steadman? As in steady man....He's got the security Alma needs, but boy, is he boring. No dynamic "Twists" or swirling seas (Del Mar).

Stevens or Stephens.
I also like: Pepper, Cameron, Carter, and Fisk.
ETA: What about Judson?
-
Yeah, let's stick with Proulx's habit of name symbolism. What kind of ethnicities settled Wyoming?
We got Del Mar, Beers, Twist, Aguirre, Wroe, Stoutamire...
-
Monroe San Johnson... (think about it...)
-
Okay, lets try
Lafayette or Beaudry
-
For whatever reason, I am liking Fisk
Monroe Fisk
Alma Beers Fisk

Hey Leslie,
I was thinking...Annie said she didn't invent any names, just looked in newspapers, etc....Monroe's a grocer, probably belongs to the local Chamber of Commerce...googled Wyoming Chamber of Commerce...got Lander's C of C, which includes Riverton. There're a lot of names, (unusual sounding and not), whether for Monroe or any future characters.
A few that caught my eye - Birkle, Brace, Trautman....
http://www.landerchamber.org/memberlist.aspx
-
Birkle? That's perfect! Definately quirky enough!
-
Wow, fernly, that's very resourceful! Are there any clues from inside Monroe's grocery store in the film? Any signs or anything that might provide a clue? I've never thought about this problem before. I'll think about it tonight when I watch the movie again.
-
How about 'Lanford'; Monroe Lanford. I like it.

(I googled: Wyoming Monroe)

Well, so what's the verdict after all the input?
"Fisk" sounds awfully New England to me, MaineWriter. ;)
If it isn't too late, I'll put in my two cents for something like "Dunlap."
Monroe Dunlap.
Hmm, if you don't use that one, maybe I will, as I may have a need to give him a name.
Or, I like to make little plays off the story. In the AP original, the grocer's name is Bill, as in "I'm goin' a yell for Bill!" at Thanksgiving. How about something like Monroe Bilson, or Billings, or Billups?
Hmm, maybe I ought a use one a those!
-
In the short story, his first name is Bill:
"I'm goin a yell for Bill."
-
Hmmmm, liking Billings, with Jeff's rationale...
Monroe & Alma Billings
that might work...
-
Billings? No, that has a "Montana" sound to it. At least Dunlap is boring like the character Monroe.

Thank you, David! That's exactly what I was getting at!
