Title: *** Help Test A New Feature! *** Western NY Prepares for New Major Storm!
Post by: Phillip Dampier on February 07, 2007, 05:54:10 pm
Hi fans of Anything Goes.  Help me test a new feature we're working to roll out on the first anniversary - videos embedded right in the forum!  I am looking for users to let me know their experiences in trying this service out.  Keep scrolling down through the thread until you find the message in red!

The winter that wasn't now is in western and central New York.  Here in Rochester, we've been getting snowed on almost daily because of frigid air crossing the relatively warm waters of Lake Ontario, which creates intense bands of lake effect snow which can leave an area sunny and clear and total blizzard conditions just a mile or two down the road.  Thankfully, we're not in the communities east of Lake Ontario where things are starting to get extremely serious, even for those folks who are used to the lake effect snow machine.  More than 100 inches of snow have fallen in Oswego county in the last ten days, and just consider this: in the past two days, snow has fallen at a rate of five inches an hour, virtually 24 hours a day.  Today alone, up to three feet or more of snow is expected to fall and there is no end in sight.

With that much snow on the ground, eastern Lake Ontario areas have been essentially shut down, although folks across our area are notorious for being able to navigate through weather that would paralyze a city for days.  But with snowbanks well over 20 feet high, new problems are starting to appear, including communications and power issues.  The data center for our Internet service provider is adjacent to Syracuse and the snow piles have gotten so high, they are starting to near power transformers and both power and telecommunications services are starting to fluctuate.  We haven't lost connectivity yet, but parts of the state between Syracuse and Albany are starting to experience real issues.

Locally, the constant winds and lake effect have been brutal for me out on my power walks - I've fled to area malls on a few occasions. Winter is back, and I'm getting lots of exercise from walking and the constant need to shovel the driveway.

Please report back your experience in seeing and hearing this video slideslow of this week's winter storms here in western New York... I am testing embedding videos into the forum for our users.

http://liveclip.com/flvplayer.swf?iscorp=0&autoStart=false&file=http://64.191.82.166/Upload.LiveClip/bettermost/Video/634866b7-5bdf-41f7-ae66-17cd021151basnow.avi.flv

Some people have experienced problems, so let me know if they impact you, or let me know if everything worked fine!

Troubleshooting Report

Please complete this report when reporting a problem.  It will help me in tracking down solutions before this becomes available for the whole site.

1. What browser are you using (IE 6, IE 7, Firefox, etc.)
2. What problem did you experience (ie. blank white screen, no sound, the video looked too small for the box, player control issues, etc.)
3. What version of Flash are you running (visit http://www.macromedia.com/software/flash/about/ and report back the version number)
3a. If you are not running v9.0 and up, please visit http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ and allow the installation of the latest version.
3b. After installing the latest version, did that resolve your previous problem?

Some other questions to consider giving me input on:

1. Did you enjoy being able to watch videos right from the forum?
2. Would you like to be able to use this feature for your own videos you'd like to share with others here?
3. What kinds of things would you like to see with this feature?

Thanks again for your help!

This will be a really nice addition to our forum, Phillip!

My audio is working fine now too!

People will be able to video their pets' antics, stupid human tricks their friends perform, record live greetings from Brokie gatherings ... the possibilities are endless!

I have been out shovelling all day long - it's snowing faster than I can keep up.  We've had 22 inches here since last evening and it's still snowing!
