Hiya all,
This is really scary....! I have been working on a fanfiction story of my own and thought this would be a good time to post the first few chapters...
:D
Right where you are is an AU story. It starts right after Jack and Ennis have parted ways in Signal and Ennis comes home to Alma. It then moves along to 1965. Ennis is married to Alma. Ennis can't stop thinking about Jack, and he thinks he will never see him again, but fate has something in store for the both of them.
Please bear in mind that English is not my native language and I have never written any stories in English!
I am writing this to alleviate some of the pain I still feel when I think of Jack and Ennis and to alleviate the physical pain I have felt in the past four and a half years due to severe RSI.
The pain stole away my creativity and Jack and Ennis handed it back to me with a huge grin on their faces...

What a great story. Like how you have put the guys into the situations they never really wanted, and now have to figure out how and when to free themselves and get together. They realize it, but haven't figured it out, yet.
Like how you've given Ennis a good job and a chance to prove himself, rather than remaining a ranchhand forever. He's sharp, and not all learning is from books.
Also like how you wove the reunion scene from the OS into your story. But in the graveyard?! Wonder what the Breckinridge family thought about that!!
The weekend at the Twist Ranch will be very interesting, i'm sure. Hope the guys get to take a lo-o-o-ong ride around the property...with a stop somewhere to get "re-acquainted".
Thanks for this story. Don't be nervous any more; you have a very good sense of dialogue, the guys sound so natural when they're talking to each other. Keep up the good work. Will watch for more.

I have finally thought of a pitch for my story (I know, a bit late...):

Where are we now?
SPOILERS....
Ennis and Alma have gotten married. Ennis finds a good job at a ranch. Alma has problems getting pregnant. Ennis obviously cannot stop thinking about Jack. Alma and Ennis go to a wedding in Cody and Ennis's world is turned upside-down again when he sees Jack there with his fiance Elly, Alma's cousin. They find some time to talk alone. Turns out Jack never left Lightning Flat, because his father died so he had to stay and manage the 'ranch'. He had to give up on his dream: rodeoing. Ennis and Alma end up visiting Jack and Elly in Lightning Flat a few weeks later. This is where their feelings for each other flare up again and spin out of control.

Chapter 15 was totally brilliant! I loved the way you described Jack and Ennis in this chapter. You did a really good job describing the mountains and forest too. I could alsmost smell the pine trees!
This is my favorite chapter so far, and I didn't want it to end. :)

Warning - Possible Spoilers!
I started reading "Right Where You Are" today and after just one chapter I'm already hooked! :o
I was in floods of tears at work today. I had to pretend I had a cold! ::)
You write beautifully, Melissa. Congratulations! The pathos evoked in the shower scene was almost too much for me to bear! :'(

I've just finished Chapter 15, Melissa. Beautiful imagery. I particularly loved this:

He turned it over in his head that already felt too full for somebody who never spent too much time thinking things over. Before Jack Twist. Because now the floodgates seemed to have opened and he didn't know where the hatch was to close it again. He never knew his head could be this full. Ennis just wanted things to be simple. So he gave a simple answer.
"I missed you." <unquote>
I think you understand Ennis very well, Melissa. Just beautiful.

A tear slid down Jack's cheek as he threw out "I don't know what to say any more, Ennis. I don't wanna push you but I need you there with me so badly. Every morning I wake up and I imagine it's you who's been lying next to me all night, and I keep my eyes closed and try to imagine that the other side of the bed is still warm from your body and that you are already out on the land... and..." The tears flowed freely now, like his words, but his voice was still steady. His voice only broke when he added "It would be a sweet life, Ennis."
Ennis felt his own heart shatter to pieces when he saw Jack break down. He reached out with trembling arms and pulled Jack toward him, stroking his hair and saying "It's alright, it's alright", copying how Jack always soothed him. He pulled Jack's face toward him and locked eyes with him, his own tears clouding his vision, and he wanted to say something, but he had to dig deep to find the words that Jack needed to hear. "We'll be OK" he said, and despite the doubts still in his heart, he started to see a glimmer of hope because if Jack felt this strongly, and his feelings matched his own so much, then how could there not be a place for them? They laid down. Jack rested his head on Ennis's shoulder and his breathing slowly calmed down as his tears stopped flowing. <unquote>
Sigh!

You are very talented, Melissa. Chapter 18 is absolutely beautiful. Hard to believe that English is your second language. You are a master wordsmith. I love you minimalist writing style, allowing one to concentrate fully on the matter in hand, without divergent distractions. Just Jack and Ennis to concentrate on, pure and simple. I found this chapter to be very intense and emotionally moving. I'm not sure whether I want to laugh or cry. What I do know is that I'm smiling broadly from the feeling of intense love I'm experiencing for Jack and Ennis right now.
P.S., I revised Chapter 17 before progressing to Chapter 18 and saw the two options you'd chosen for what Jack had whispered in Ennis' ear. Let's just say, because I'm aware of Spoilers, that I personally prefer the more romantic of the two options. You know the one I mean! ;) :)

Well, have to say what a good story you've written for us. After reading Chapter 18 earlier, last night I had to go out by the fire-pit and re-read the whole story to date. Their relationship rekindles and bursts into flames, banks and then grows hot again. It sweeps along and builds up to the ending of Chapter 18, which is a real turning point for Ennis and Jack. The question of course is which way they will turn, and when, and who will get consumed in the fire [Elly already has been], and who will emerge from the fire forged into a new, stronger person. Guess that's more than one question! Looking forward to finding out the answers.

I was so sorry to read of the death of your uncle. Please accept my most sincere sympathies. Words are always inadequate at times such as these. I'm glad you have your boyfriend with you, to give you comfort and support.
Thank you for Chapter 19 of "Right Where you Are." I have just read it and, as always, am presently feeling somewhat emotional in its wake. Suffice to say that I enjoyed Chapter 19 very much. It's very subtle, sensitive and understated. It's practically impossible to single out a favourite quote, but this comes close:
"But all those thoughts had always been outvoted by his heart telling him he loved kissing Jack, running his hands over his body and making love to him face to face."
I wanted to especially thank you for these words, Melissa, because I had always been distressed by Annie Proulx's description of the dozy embrace, describing how Ennis was more comfortable embracing Jack from behind, because then he didn't have to confront who he was embracing.
Your beautiful words negate this distressing description of Ennis's denial and, in so doing, they have imbued Ennis's soul with "face to face" light and love - his love for Jack.

Yes, that whole line in the SS bothers me so much too, added with the "maybe they never got much farther than that", it just kills me every time. I was glad they added the second tent scene in the movie to counter that a bit, because I am a bit of a romantic. ::)

Yes, that whole line in the SS bothers me so much too, added with the "maybe they never got much farther than that", it just kills me every time. I was glad they added the second tent scene in the movie to counter that a bit, because I am a bit of a romantic. ::)

I'm very worried about Ennis now. Alma too, although I'm not liking her much right now. I'm mad at her for some reason. I know the pregnancy isn't her fault, but I think she will use it to try and trap Ennis. I hope not though. That would be an awful thing to do to him. Also, I'm wondering if Mr. Fluty is beginning to pick up on Ennis's sexual orientation after his faux pas at the bar. I'm worried he will figure it out and send some people after Ennis and do a hospital job on him!

OK, I was so fed up with writing angst, that I just needed to write a one-shot totally devoid of it! So instead of chapter 25 of RWYA I will be posting a one-shot this week. It will be quite a long one-shot, at least 10 pages and it might turn into a full story, I don't know, guess I will have to go by what my muse tells me to do.
Anyway, the story:
Ennis is a market research analyst, he is married, two kids. He is just coming back from a business trip, boards a plane from Boston to London Heathrow. He has extreme fear of flying. Enter chatty Jack Twist, who sits next to him. He's a physiotherapist and chiropractor, and is on his way back to his girlfriend in London. He tries to make Ennis take his mind off flying, which he succeeds in. Well, needless to say, they have 6 hours to 'get to know each other'. Enough time for lots of flirty dialogue and... uhm... more.
God, I don't even know for sure if Jack and Ennis on a plane has been done before, but I can say with reasonable certainty that it's never been done like this!
I might post it in two parts, I will see what happens!

Synopsis continuing story: Ennis and Jack have parted ways after sharing more than just life stories on a Boeing 747 from Boston to London Heathrow. Will they meet again.......? OK, well, that's quite obvious, let's just ask ourselves what will happen when they meet again?
Author's note: The characters Jack and Ennis are not mine, they belong to Annie Proulx. All OC's are mine. I don't earn any money from writing this, it just gives me some peace of mind.

Here is a synopsis:
Jack Twist is an 18-year old American who moved to Amsterdam with his parents when he was 8 years old. It is May 1945 and Amsterdam is being liberated by Canadian allied soldiers. One of these soldiers is Ennis del Mar and after a chance meeting, the two become friends. As the friendship intensifies, they start questioning everything they've always believed in.

But the long walk, and setting up the tent exhaused Jack. Physical exertion is always more taxing when

I have written the next chapter of Liberation, and two-thirds of the next chapter of Altitude, but only on paper. I need to find the time and energy to type that out, and since I am having some problems with my shoulder again (my first rib was removed three years ago because it was pressing on a nerve to my arm) and I have an almost fulltime job now, I have to be economical with my time on the computer! :-\
Anyway, I am constantly thinking of our boys, and writing a lot, just not posting. But when I do post in the next two weeks, I might post a chapter of each story!

Hey Amanda! Thanks for asking! I have sort of gotten over the worst writing block ever to happen to me... It was really bad, I was on the verge of abandoning both my stories.... Then Marie gave me some awesome advice and... I'm back to writing now after three weeks!

I'm sorry to hear about your writer's block! That sounds really frustrating for sure. Needless to say, I'm very happy to hear that you think you can get back to writing at this point. It would be so sad if you didn't finish these stories!

Well, stopped by and saw the last few entries. Glad to read that you overcame the "block" and are back into writing. Would be a shame if you couldn't finish. Can understand your problem, though, have run into it a couple of times too, wondering just how I'm going to get through a situation I've created on paper and not knowing how, and then... something triggers something else, and there it is, pouring out onto the page. Looking forward to reading the next chapters.

I have been so extremely busy at work (I have a new job as a communications advisor at an atomic and molecular physics institute and it's absolutely wonderful but it's so demanding!) .... BUT I have most of the next two chapters of Altitude written out on paper, so I hope to be able to write some this weekend!
