Title: Notice: Construction Season
Post by: Phillip Dampier on April 22, 2006, 05:33:46 pm
I have had a request to bring the "I Love Everything..." into its own section.  I am considering making a change in here and wanted to get user input on it before proceeding.

BBM Games and Quizzes would be renamed BBM Fun and Games to better reflect some of the additional activities that aren't really a game or a quiz.  Each respective activity would have its own child board, starting with:

1) ABC's & 123's
2) I Love Everything

The main board would have a permanent sticky message explaining how the section is organized for visitors.  The random smaller games and threads could also remain there.  I don't want to bury people in child boards, so I'm also amenable to just adjusting the name of the section and leaving things the way they are right now if more people like that idea.

For a sample of how it might look, check out the BetterMost News & Welcome Center forum.  It has a child board attached.

Let me know.

I like those child boards as long as u can get to them from the jump to box at the bottom. And feel free to have the mods move posts around as far as I'm concerned. I never know if I''m putting things in the right place.  Thanks, Phillip! You take such good care of us.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for asking.  Frankly, I'm kind of split.  I like having them all at one glance on the same level, but I do see that it's getting a little unweildy.  So I'd be happy to try out the child board concept and see how it rolls, especially since you mentioned the placing permanently stickyed explanation of the organizational structure at the top of the parent board.

Being the initiator of many of these new threads and a few others that I would re-introduce here (from our IMDb BBM experiences), I feel like I need to weigh in also.

I appreciate your attempt to change the title to "Fun and Games". However IMO these new threads are not about fun and games either.  They're more like expressions of feelings and opportunities to highlight touching moments and how they relate to us in our lives. I suppose they appear like games in that they are easy and light, - but they're not really fun and games.

Just someone else's opinion

Roland

I agree with you Roland, they are not actually games more a unique yet fun way starting dailogue and get folks in touch with the more ethereal feelings this film has unleashed, that are sometimes difficult to express.  I also see lots of potential for new threads.  The child board seems best to me with a jump link on the forum page.

I like the "Fun and Games" naming idea.  Although the "I love everything.." threads may not be strictly considered "Games" they are definitely fun.

I am alittle bit weary about the "child forum" concept though.  I am pretty content with the way that the forum is at the moment.  When all the threads are visible at once, all the fun and game threads get great exposure and it becomes easy to move from, say, the ABCs game to an "I love everything.." thread without having to enter child forums.

Just my 2 cents..

I like what Lucise says here.  I don't think it's too unwieldy yet just having it all piled together.  We may get to a point where we want to subdivide, but I don't think we're there yet.

Hmm. That's odd. I thought I wrote a post about this last night. Now I can't find it. Well, it was very late ...

Anyway, I'm with Roland and Victoria that the ILE threads are of a different nature than the games threads. They're not wordplay or puzzles, they're about expressing potentially more profound thoughts and emotions. (Sometimes the games elicit profundity, too, but that's not their primary purpose. And sometimes the ILE posts are funny or flippant, but they're also meant to allow for seriousness.)

However, I'm OK with storing the ILEs here as long as they're easily findable. As long as the games forum doesn't grow beyond a page, that shouldn't be a problem. In fact, they may be more findable that way than they would with child boards.

Well, as I've said many times before, I am absolutely terrible at coming up with creative names for forums.  My writing strength is not in the "creative writing" wing.  I am always happy to get ideas about better names.

The early consensus seems to be more towards keeping this section free of child boards for now anyway because the threads do all fit on one forum page.  We just need a better name for the forum to reflect it's interactivity, yet more structured format.

Hows about

The lighter side of the mountain

or

Brokeback Lite

Phillip
Maybe you can claim to have limited creativity when it comes to thinking up forum titles, but look around you, at the family that you're taking care of. Pretty damn impressive I'd say!

The lighter side of the mountain

I love this one!

And Phillip, I second Roland's comment. I am blown away on a daily basis by what you've created here.

I really like  The lighter side of the mountain maybe with a subheading that says something like
"Games, Puzzles & word play of all sorts"

As always Phillip you impress me! I also still LOVE the idea of an art board where those artists amoung us like could display their work for the benefit if all.  Sheyne's and Mandy's drawings, Ray's  cartoons, Brandon's original photographs.  I'm sure their are other hidden artists here at BetterMost as well.

Well, except that "games, puzzles and worldplay" does not describe the ILE series, which is none of the above, IMO.

But an art board would be great.

I disagree just a little here.  The ILE threads are exactly the kind of word play used in threapy, with children especially, to draw out emotions and associations.  A lot of  group counseling, especially in area's such as grief counseling, use this free associative technique.  We use it quite a bit in the hospice setting where I volunteer.

OK, I see what you mean. But when I contribute to the ABCs or acronyms, they seem to draw on a different part of the brain than the ILEs do, for me. Generally speaking, they're more verbal than emotional.

But your comment is interesting. I guess you could consider all of the threads -- for that matter, all of these forums -- as a form of grief counseling. I don't mean to sound flippant, Victoria, or to equate what the bereaved go through in real life to what BBM viewers experience. But really, I think it's a form of grief, in part, that brings us here. It's like we have to keep working through it, and working through it ...

I have renamed the forum and slightly changed the description.  I'll leave the child board concept out of here for the time being just because of my concern of diluting the forums by having too many of them.  We can re-evaluate this in time if we need to.

BTW, welcome to Roland who is now a moderator here.

FYI: I have no power over the order that the moderators appear in.  The software decides that for me and I don't seem to have any power over it.  I try and let each game-master moderate their own thread, so if anyone needs assistance in this forum, you should contact the moderator that adminsters the game you have a question about if possible.

Thanks!

Forgive me for being so uneducated, but what, pray tell, is a child's board? I am in the dark here.

As for the topic of the thread, I don't mind them being under the same roof with a name like "the Lighter Side of the Mountain." That kinda keeps it all in the same family nicely.

A child board is a forum that sits inside of a another forum.  If you go into the BetterMost News & Welcome Center, you will see two examples - Say Hello... and Q&A.

This is the response I gave to Amanda on the Thread "I am Sooo like Ennis" just a few moments. I thought it might be more useful to repost it here.

By the way,  this doesn't seem so "light" as in the "lighter side of the mountain."  But, it's a good topic.  Thanks Roland.

This is the point I've tried to put across to Phillip from the beginning. My threads have more in common with each other, and less to do with games. Even the retitling to Lighter Side... still suffers from a subtitle that doesn't at all reflect the essence of these threads. As a matter of fact (figure of speach, of course) your new(?) thread dealing with "loveable subtle details" is more kin to these threads than the more popular threads on this forum. Anyways, as Phillip suggested in a PM, i think, this whole experiment in cyberspace is barely 3 months old and still trying to adjust to the new and ever changing realities of it's clientel. The members roster has increased by nearly 50% since I made the move here some 4 weeks ago. (there were 181 members then!) I believe the thread "Notice: Construction Season" is still a worthy place to posts one's thoughts on this subject, SO WHY am I going on & on here? ??? - silly me  ::)

I think we are approaching the time when I am going to make some changes in here to clarify who is running what game because I am seeing duplicated threads and we're nearing a page two in here.  It looks like the child forum approach is in our future here, and a clearer idea of who is administering what game is becoming necessary.
