Mount Rushmore? Does not really sound like a shortcut on the way to Jack. But that might be because he doesn't know yet that he's on the way to Jack.

I like Millie. And with her caring and food providing nature I guess Littlewing finally managed to smuggle herself into the story! ;D

Thanks, you two, for that series! I love it!

Thanks, Dagi!

Jack woke at 5:00a.m. Sunday morning with an almost painful hard-on.  He had been dreaming about Ennis holding him inside the tent up on Brokeback.  Jack grimaced as he replayed the dream.  They were cooing and cuddling after a night of close and steamy sex!  Jack held Ennis tight for a few hours, and after that, Ennis took his turn and cuddled Jack like a babe in arms.  Jack rubbed his swollen penis, slid his fingers up and down the shaft until he released.  He rose immediately after his orgasm and hid his soiled and sticky sheets under his bed.  Jack was sure his mom washed a few of his semen stained sheets when he was a teen, but he was a man now – he should be able to control himself.  He would wash the sheets in secret later.

After he showered and dressed, Jack headed downstairs to an empty kitchen.  His mom was surely up in her room getting ready for church, Jack thought.  His dad was probably walking somewhere on the property, keeping an eye on things.  Mr. Twist never went to church, which saddened his mom, but suited him just fine. Jack walked over to the cupboard and removed a box of corn flakes.  He had to prepare his own breakfast on Sunday morning, as his mom was too busy to cook before service.  After he ate his morning meal, Jack climbed the stairs and knocked on his mom’s bedroom door.  “I’ll be out in a minute, Jack.”  Mrs. Twist yelled.  Jack promised her that he would drive her to the Missionary Pentecostal Church.   She even talked him into staying for service.  Jack couldn’t believe that he agreed to go, but he couldn’t say no to his ma.  Mrs. Twist assured Jack that he didn’t have to dress up, as their congregation believed: “come as you are.”  Jack  thought he looked mighty fine in a starched white shirt, a pair of khaki pants and black shoes.  When his mom exited her room, however, Jack wished he had a suit!  Mrs. Twist looked very pretty in her white Sunday-go-to-meeting hat, a floral shirtwaist dress, white shoes and a gold and white pocketbook.  “You look very nice, ma!”  Jack whispered as he took his mother’s hand.  “I’m ashamed to be seen with you like this,” Jack announced as he swept a hand across his body.  “You look fine, Jack.”  Mrs. Twist countered evenly.  “Now let’s get going or we’ll miss testimony service.”  Jack nodded and escorted his ma to the truck.

Jack drove in silence, as his thoughts were with Ennis.  He mailed the postcard 3 days ago, and even though he didn’t expect a response after only 3 days, he began to wonder if the card would even reach his friend.  Jack remembered Ennis’ remarks about marrying Alma, and he couldn’t help but wonder if the marriage actually took place, and if Ennis and Alma were setting up house.  “Jack, you passed the church!”  Mrs. Twist shouted and snapped Jack out of his thoughts.  “Sorry ma!” Jack mumbled as he turned the truck around and found a spot in the church’s tiny parking lot.

Mrs. Twist led Jack into church where they were greeted with several pews of people waving hands and white handkerchiefs.  Jack was not a frequent visitor to the church, but he never forgot the peculiar manner of worship.  They took a seat near the front, and sat directly behind a lovely young woman with waist length red hair.  She was swaying and chanting - waving her white handkerchief.  And in what seemed like a split second, the young lady rose to her feet and began to tremble and convulse.  Jack didn’t blink an eye, as being touched by the holy spirit was a common occurrence at Missionary Pentecostal church.  The young woman, who Jack knew only as Katie, looked as though she would fall backwards in a swoon.  “You know what to do, Jack!”  Mrs. Twist whispered in Jack’s ear.  Jack knew very well that he was expected to break Katie’s fall.  He rose quickly from his seat as Katie fell backwards in his arms, a look of sweet rapture on her lovely face.  But just as soon as he tried to return Katie to her seat, he noticed that she was staring straight into his eyes.  Jack blinked nervously as a seductive smile spread slowly over Katie's beautiful face.  Jack knew the woman was flirting and he chuckled silently.  Flirting in church when she should be serious about praising the Lord?  Jack couldn't believe it!  He gently lowered her to her seat and sat back down himself.  Mrs. Twist saw the entire exchange and smiled knowingly at Katie.

" Let us praise the Lord and raise our voices unto Him that He may bring joy to our hearts and our spirits, now and forever, go in peace!"

"Hallelujah! " shouted Jack. Jack was happy the Sunday service was finally over. He'd forgotten just how lengthy the Missionary Pentecostal services tended to be. With what seemed like endless readings, joyful singing and testimonials, sometimes the service could span ninety minutes or more.

After the services, the entire congregation merged to the parish hall to enjoy a Sunday potluck brunch. Mrs. Twist took Jack by the arm, up the steps and into the Word of Jeremiah Parish Hall.

Jack was practically salivating as he perused the lavish spread of home made dishes. He sauntered over to the corner of the table, took a paper plate off the top of the stack and started down the line of tasty goodies. Jack flipped a spoonful of ham hocks with collared greens on his plate, a helping of sweet potatoes, barbecued chicken wings and something that looked like creamy, baked macaroni with black eyed peas.

"You'll like that macaroni and cheese. I made it myself." It was the girl from church, Katie and she was staring straight at him again. This time Jack noticed she had the most striking green eyes, like those of a cat. "You'll like my pie, too."

"Yer what?" asked Jack, not certain he'd heard her properly. "My punkin pie," she said pointing to the desserts at the end of the table. "It's my mamma's recipe" Then, taking Jack by the elbow, she lead him over to the pastry tray.

Wonderfully detailed story, Littlewing! I can see Jack, he sure looks mighty fine, he would even look mighty fine with nothing but a potato sack on! :P And I so understand Katie! One just can´t let slip such an opportunity to fall into the arms of a beautiful man!

Ennis couldn’t believe he was so rash as to get off the bus, park his butt on a bench behind the store and allow the bus to leave without him.  Now what?  He didn’t even know exactly where he was; just knew he was somewhere near the Wyoming border.  Ennis looked around him.  Perhaps he was somewhere near Moorcraft.  He walked into the Circle K in hopes of finding directions to Lightening Flat.  Ennis had $20.00 left after buying the bus ticket.  He was famished and knew he had to get something in him.  He found a cooler filled with pre-made sandwiches and picked up a ham and cheese priced at $1.00 even.  Ennis smiled as he thought about Millie and her generosity.  He wished her well.

“You gonna pay for that, or just look at it?” Ennis swung around and found himself staring at the chest of the tallest man he’d ever encountered.  Ennis looked up and saw the face of the man who spoke to him.  He was middle aged, average looking, with salt-and-pepper hair and brown eyes.  The man wore an apron, and a name tag with Aaron printed on it, was pinned to his massive chest.  “I’m gonna pay for it, mister.”  Ennis stated, grudgingly.  He left the big man where he was and walked briskly to the cashier.  The pretty cashier took Ennis’ sandwich and placed it in a paper bag.  “Where you headed, stranger?”  She asked.  “Well, I’m trying to get to Lightning Flat,” Ennis answered.  “I’m hoping someone can tell me how to get there.”  “Oh, it’s just down the road apiece,” the cashier began.  “Just head north, a straight shot, and you’ll see the signs for Lightning Flat.  You have business in such a sleepy town?”  Ennis smiled at her as he paid for his food.  “Yeah, I plan to look up an old friend.”  “Well, good luck!” The cashier offered as she handed him his purchase.

Ennis walked out of the Circle K and headed for the bench to eat his sandwich.  After he finished his lunch, Ennis hitched a ride from a family of 4 into Lightening Flat.  He never sat foot there before, and judging from what he observed as he walked along a country road, he understood why Jack was so keen to be anywhere else!  Ennis walked along the road for about a mile until he noticed a small church.  He remembered someone telling him that church houses are a sort of refuge for weary travelers, or for anyone who needs protection and shelter.  Ennis read the sign, Missionary Pentecostal Church.  He reasoned that he could go in, take a breather for awhile, and be on his way.  He would not intrude or wear out his welcome.

The inside of Missionary Pentecostal Church was modest and it was empty.  This shocked Ennis a bit, as it was Sunday, and he was sure someone would be around, even if service was over.  He shrugged and took a seat near the back.  Ennis lowered his head and wondered how he would ever find the nerve to confront Jack.  He wasn’t even sure if Jack would want to see him.  But Ennis had to find out.  Besides, what harm is there in looking up an old friend?  Ennis sat for about 10 minutes when he jumped at the sensation of a hand on his shoulder.  He followed the hand up to the face of an elderly gentleman.  “Howdy, young man,” the elderly gentleman began. “Service is over but we’re having a brunch in the hall upstairs.  You’re welcome to join us, if you want.”  Ennis smiled softly at the old man.  He was touched by the offer, but was much too shy to break bread with a bunch of strangers.  Besides, he needed to be on his way.  “No thanks, sir,” Ennis replied politely.  “But I need to get going.  I thank you for your offer..you’re very kind.”  Ennis rose from the pew and the elderly gentleman walked him to the door.  “Well, you remember – you’re welcome here any time.  You come back and see us, okay?”  Ennis waved at the man and walked down the road.

You'll like my pie, too.   :o  I'm hoping you didn't mean that!   :-X

I feel like we're getting to a really dramatic moment.  Ennis get's off the bus, Jack is in town.  Hmmm  Wonder what is going to happen next.

I especially enjoyed reading about Jack in church.  That was so vivid I felt like I was right there with him.  Maybe because it reminded me of going to church when I was a boy.  We went to a Baptist church, so there was no shaking with any spirits, no matter how holy. But I can relate to most of the rest of it.

When I was a very small boy, five or younger even, I got away from Mother while at church and ran up the aisle.  And I bent down and ran right into one of the pews.  The edge of the pew was fairly sharp, and it cut my forehead open.  I can remember vividly being taken to the vestibule by Mother and several other church ladies where they used paper towels to mop up the blood.  Finally Mother and Dad took me to the ER where I got stiches.  I still have the scar.

Thanks for continuing the story, guys.

Gary

Hey, Gary!  I had to smile when you related your experiences about church.  No, not the part about running into the pew, but the part about no shaking in the spirit.   I'm a Pentecostal, and the things that go on in my church can seem very strange!  People fall out, dance, speak in tongues.  It is very lively, and the music is amazing.  In fact, the church is where most black singers practiced their craft.  I've been dying to write about Jack and the Pentecostal church for some time now.  It is always good to write about what you've experienced!

I'm glad you're enjoying the series.  Stay tuned!

Hey there kids,
I'm glad you are enjoying our saga. I know I am! I had no idea when I reposted "Right" that I would be on my way to my first short story. Littlewing is so imaginative and clever and y'all are such an appreciative audience. I can't wait to find out what happens to Jack and Ennis, I mean, wait 'til ya find out what happens next!

Mrs. Twist found Jack to inform him that she was going with Katie's mother to the cemetary to pay a visit to Katie's father who had died the year before and would he mind giving Katie a ride home. Jack smelled a set-up but he didn't mind too much. Katie was a spirited girl and she seemed like fun, so he obliged his mother.

They walked out to the truck then Jack held the door open for Katie and helped her up. He hopped into the driver seat, put the truck in gear and off they went. The truck bounced down the road with the wind whipping Katie's auburn hair about the cab. "Aww, I'm sorry. Yer hair's gettin' messed up. Here, lemme close them windows."

"Oh, I don't care. It feels good," Katie shouted."Don't tell nobody but ever since my daddy died," she continued, "I feel free! My daddy didn't let me date. He said it wasn't proper for a good Christian girl to be seen out with different fellas all the time." "So Jack, how come I never seen you out with any of the girls around here? Not good enough for ya, huh?" she teased, winking and twirling a lock of hair between her fingers.

"Naw, it ain't that," Jack stammered," I been busy riding broncs and rodeoing and stuff..." They pulled up to the modest farm house on the edge of town, stopped in front and Jack cut the engine. Dust swirled all around the truck and the sounds of the engine cooling cut the awkward silence. Jack waited a few minutes then said, "Well.. we're here." "Yeah." said Katie looking at Jack then back out at the farm house. She started to fiddle with the door handle as though she was trying to open it then turned and impulsively planted a moist kiss on Jack's lips. Katie hopped out of the truck and slammed the door with both hands. "See ya next Sunday?" she cried out as she dashed up the steps.

"Yeah, maybe..." he mumbled, throwing the truck in gear and turning on the ignition. Jack barreled down the road to his house. When he got to the house, he drove up onto the grass, grabbed his hat and cigarettes then jumped out of the truck.

John Twist was in his usual Sunday afternoon spot: seated in the kitchen with a cigarette burning in the ashtray, a cup of stale coffee at his side and the Sunday paper spread out all over the kitchen table. "Hey, Dad," Jack said, flatly. "Hey boy," the old man said, barely acknowledging him," Yer Ma with you?"

"She's with one of the ladies from church. They went to the cemetary or somethin'." he said exiting the kitchen and starting up the stairs to his bedroom.

"Hey Jack," Mr. Twist called out, "you know someone name'a Ennis Del Mar?"
