Ah Littlewing, so sweet, but so sad.  Reminds me of the song I'll be home for Christmas, but only in my dreams.

Hi Toycoon and Littlewing.  I'm wondering where you two are going with this.  Imagining Jack and Ennis moving into that girly apartment in town made me smile.  That's so incongrouous with the rugged cowboy image that Jack and Ennis embraced.  But maybe if they had been freer they would have sometimes been softer and gentler.

I'm glad the boys are okay, and that they have a place to stay, but poor Mrs. Twist.   :'(

Gary

Thanks for commenting, Gary.  We'll just have to see where the boys end up for the time being.  I can't wait to post chapter 62.

Beautiful and very sexy story, Littlewing.  And I loved that poem there at the end.  There is something very erotic about a love bite.  MMMM

Gary

Thanks, Gary.  I'm fond of love bites, as well!  ::)

By the time supper time came around, Roberta Twist was very worried about her Ennis and her son. It was completely out of character for Jack to miss one of his mother's home cooked meals without good reason and Ennis didn't appear to be the type of person that would take off without explaining himself. No, something was clearly wrong. She stirred the large pot containing her 'cowboy' beef stew and absently watched the vegetables spin until they came to a stop.

John Twist walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table without saying a word. The only sound was the creaking of his knees as he bent down to sit at the kitchen table. John had spent the entire day building the framework for the new barn and he was feeling the loss of the two strong, able bodies that were to assist him with this monumental task. He put both elbows on the table between the fork and spoon, let out a heavy sigh and stared straight ahead. Mrs. Twist placed a basket of warm biscuits in the middle of the table in front of him. Next, she took two deep bowls from the cupboard then set them on the table. Finally, she wrapped a towel around the stew pot, lifted it by the handles and slowly carried it to the table where she laid it to rest on a pot metal trivet.

"Smells good," muttered John, under his breath. Roberta silently dunked the ladle in the hearty stew, poured it into John's bowl then repeated the action for herself. A few sanguine drops spattered on the worn linen tablecloth. Roberta put her hands together and bowed her head. She shot John a stern look that commanded he do the same. "Heavenly Father," she began, "bless our meal and our home. Protect our boys where ever they may be and guide them back safely to us, Amen." Her voice cracked at the word "safely" and she kissed her clasped hands.

John took a big mouthful of soup and savored his wife's fine cooking. Roberta swirled the spoon around in her bowl and concentrated on a potato chunk. How could that man possibly enjoy his meal without knowing where his son was? She finally spoke up. "John, what happened last night when you got up and went downstairs?" John looked at her nervously. "Nothin' happened," he lied. He took a biscuit from the basket and inspected it. "Did you say something to Jack or Ennis to make them upset?"
"Me? I didn't say nothin." John tore the biscuit in two and dropped a half in his bowl.
"I seen that Alan Sims feller hangin' around here late last night. He an' Jack was talkin'. Maybe, they went to into the city with him."
"What!?" Mrs. Twist was irritated with her husband now. "John, why didn't you tell me before?" she said, obviously upset. "Didn't remember 'til now. Mother, I'll go into the city tomorrow an' fetch them. Bring 'em back." John Twist really had no idea where Jack and Ennis were or how he was going to find them but he had to tell Roberta something to placate her. Mrs. Twist wasn't sure that she believed John's story but it assuaged her worries for the time being.

Raquel grinned mightily at Ennis.  “What do you say, Cowboy?  You feel like escorting me to the dance?”  Ennis twirled the brim of his hat nervously between his long fingers.  Before he could answer, Katie pulled Raquel’s sleeve and led her over to the rack of scarves, well out of earshot of Ennis and Jack.  Katie whispered something in Raquel’s ear, and Ennis watched as Raquel wrinkled her powdered nose.  They rejoined them after a second, but Raquel didn’t look too happy.  “I think I’ll go with Jack,” Raquel stated unenthusiastically.  Jack lowered his eyes to the ground.  He wasn’t stupid – he knew both women wanted to go to the winter dance with Ennis.  Raquel noticed Jack’s disappointment and didn’t hesitate to offer solace.  “Jack, you aren’t second best,” she began.  “I just thought Katie was going with you, since you guys are old friends, is all.  I would love to have you escort me.”  Jack looked up at Raquel and smiled a bit.  “I understand,” he began.  “I would love to take you to the dance.”  Katie patted Jack on his broad shoulder.  “Well, we got that settled!” she sighed.  Now all we need to do is get you guys outfitted for the festivities.”  Katie winked at Ennis as she saw Raquel to the door.  “I’ll see you later, Rockie,” Katie yelled at her friend as she moved to her car.  “Call me and we’ll go over the plans for the dance.”  Raquel waved to Katie and drove off.

While Katie busied herself with customers, Ennis pulled Jack to the back of the shop so they could finish the sweet rolls in peace.  He also needed to have a few words with his lover about the dance.  Ennis sat down on an overstuffed chair and crossed his legs.  Jack decided to stand, and ate his sweet roll while looking down at Ennis.  “I’m not staying here, Jack,” Ennis stated emphatically.  “I just can’t do it.  And what is this about some dance?”  Jack worked on his roll, and when he had devoured it, sat down on the floor next to Ennis.  He knew he was taking a chance - Katie could walk in at any moment- but he placed his elbows on Ennis knees, and looked into his hazel eyes.  “We only need be here for a little while,” Jack pleaded.  “And the dance?  Well, where’s the harm?  Is it too much to ask us to escort two nice young ladies to a dance?"  Ennis took Jack’s hands and rubbed them.  “But if we go to the dance, people are bound to see us.  Lightning Flat is a small place, Jack.  We show up there and word will get back to your pa.”  Jack turned his head away.  He hadn’t considered this.  “You’re right, Cowboy!” Jack whispered.

Raquel drove down the main road and tapped her fingers on her leather covered steering wheel.  She couldn’t stop thinking about Ennis.  Jack was a looker, no doubt, but Ennis was much more her type.  She always did go for the supremely rugged, fair haired sort.  And Ennis had sort of an aristocratic air about him.  He should look quite fetching in a tuxedo.  Raquel saw the two of them in her minds eye: she in a little black Gucci dress, and Ennis in a black tuxedo with a white scarf.  She would pay for the tuxedo rental.  She already owned the black Gucci dress.  Raquel imagined that Katie and Jack would make a very handsome couple.  Katie would probably wear her lavender Valentino, while Jack would sport a white tux.  What an entrance the four of them would make!  There was only one problem!  Ennis was Katie's date.  But Raquel had a plan.

Katie wiped her brow and fanned her breast.  She was having a good day, and had already moved a lot of merchandise.  If business continued this way, Katie knew she would have to hire help on a full-time basis.  Right now she employed a high school kid on the weekends, but during the week she was on her own.  Katie moved to close the shop for an hour to prepare Ennis and Jack lunch.  But before she could reach the door, a customer walked in.  Katie blinked when she saw who it was.  “Hello, Mrs. Twist,” Katie sang sweetly.  “What can I do for you?”

Mornin'.

Well, out of one frying pan and into another, with Raquel and Katie.  Ennis is right, they can't stay there, they've already spent too much time in town and need to move on away from Jack's dad's radar and old-boy network.  They need to get out on the road, find work doing what they know, and get away from the past for a time while learning to live with each other full time again in the 'real' world down from the Mountain.

Neat turn of events, with Mrs. Twist showing up at the shop.  Didn't expect that, but then again Katie and Jack knew each other so she may be one of those logical persons for Mrs. Twist to ask about Jack.  And, Mrs. Twist just may like going into that store, seeing things that were not part of her every day life at the Ranch! [Or are they secretly?!  ;) ] Hope she'll find them there and provide some financial backing for the guys to get away.

You two are a challenge for each other, as well as for us! No telling where this road leads, but I'm along for the journey which is way more than half the fun.

Thanks again.

Ennis and Jack Forever

Ennis and Jack Forever By Littlewing1957

When my days are long
And my nights are still,
When I'm frozen by sadness
And the winter's chill,
When my tears are so heavy
That I cannot see,
When my mind is numb
From the monotomy -
This is when you come to me!

You take my hand,
You caress my cheek!
You make me strong,
You leave me weak!
You hold me captive
In your sight,
You make love to me
In a tent at night.

Jack, there is no
such thing as death!
You may be gone,
But you never left!
