How do you feel about firecrackers?
« on: June 30, 2007, 09:12:06 pm »
My vote is for Option 1.  I've always hated them ever since moving to South Florida and living with German shepherds who were extremely sensitive to them.  They would just be nervous wrecks for the two weeks before and after the 4th of July and New Year's Eve every year.  And it made me wonder, what is this need so many people in certain parts of this country have to watch shit blow up?

Thoughts?

There was no option for:

"Love 'em, love to have other people spends hundreds of thousands of dollars and take the risk to set them off themselves so I can watch".

OK, that's kind of long, but it's my position.  I've been going to fireworks shows since I was a little kid.  I love 'em.  If my dog didn't like them and he was with me, I'd shut his ears throughout the show.

The folks around where I live start setting off fireworks the last week in June. My dogs do not like the popping---mostly firecrackers. And they continue for a couple of days after the 4th. So that's a little annoying--especially since it's against the law in town. But does that stop anyone? Naw.

People set them off in the street by the side of my house---huge exploding showers and reports, etc.--it looked like a war zone at the end of the night last year. I go out in the country where some of my relatives live and set them off. Usually fighting off mosquitoes, our state bird.

When I was a kid, we played army with the firecrackers. Now I like the ones that go up in the air and explode in color.

Sometimes I go to the lake in Heber Springs, AR, where they set them off over the lake---to music. Really pretty! Very Americana.  :)

I couldn't care less about them, but my dog HATES them. He cries, howls, barks and shakes when he hears them. All the kids shoot them off in my neighborhood. BIG ONES too. Those M-80s are awful. Someone told me they were equivalent to a tenth of a stick of dynamite.

Someone shot a rocket late last night and it landed on my roof, right next to the bedroom window and blackened the glass.

Come to think of it, I do have feelings about fireworks. I hate them!  >:(

Poor Cody!! I can sympathize---my dogs don't like it either, but my biggest Yorkie shakes and shakes. I have to hold her and reassure her. Bless their little hearts.

Yes.  Now imagine trying to console two 90-pound German shepherds as they shake and cry and try to go through a window or wall to get away from them (not realizing they're coming from outside in the first place).  And the idiots across the street set off M-80s every year.  They were quiet, law-abiding, God-fearing Baptists the rest of the year, but boy, come July 4th, all hell broke loose in their front yard.  And no amount of pleasantly asking them to please keep it down to a dull roar would curtail them (they didn't have dogs).

And yeah, they're illegal here, too.  It's legal to sell/buy them, but not to set them off.  How much sense does that make?  Stupid state.

No more beans!

Firecrackers are banned in Australia. We have big firework displays on special occasions, such as New Year's Eve, and the displays usually centre around Sydney Harbour's spectacular scenery, featuring the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Such displays usually attract hundreds of thousands of spectators. But as for individual, personal use in Oz, firecrackers are strictly illegal. That wasn't always the case. When I was growing-up in the 50s and 60s, we celebrated Empire Night with firecrackers and a bonfire at the local beach. There were always horror stories in the media the following day, about some idiot putting a cracker in some poor dog's ear. Unlike all the other little boys, when I was a child, I personally preferred the pretty Catherine wheels, sky-rockets and sparklers, over the noisy bungers that exploded with a deafening bang. I can't imagine why that was so!  ::)   ;)   :)

Fireworks and thunder (both fortunately rare here) both make my dog get in the bathtub.  And my four year old in my bed.  She and I agreed this evening that she can just go ahead and sleep n my bed every night til after the 4th of July.

I CAN tell that the teenage boy down the street has moved away.  It's much quieter this year than the last two years.  Still kind of noisy, though.

Awww! That's so cute!  :D

Both Cody and Oreo sleep with me anyway. But even if they didn't, I'm sure they would insist on it this week. They HATE those fireworks; especially when one lands on my roof next to the bedroom window!

I use to love shootin them as a kid.  Never had a bad experience.   Aways had a group of fellow neighboring kids watching me to see if I would mess up.
Going to see them at the park is something I can pass on. No adredaline rush, that for sure.  I always had to fake enthusiasm when I went with a group.  Oh boy, is it over yet.

I hate them with a passion becuase they terrify the dogs and people don't know when to stop.  They selfishly shoot the darn things off half the night with no regard for their neighbors.  There aught to be a law.  damn things are dangerous too, even the so called "safe and sane" ones.

Hate firecrackers with a passion, and am scared of the big, fancy, professionally produced fireworks. For the latter, it's really the big, booming sound that frightens me--if I can watch them from a muted distance, I can actually enjoy them. For the former, I find these extremely annoying, and am frustrated that they remain so popular in my neighborhood, despite being illegal to sell and set off within the city limits. That doesn't stop folks around here from doing so every time a holiday comes around the sun sets sufficiently for them to operate under cover of darkness.

Elle, one of my shepherds used to get in the bathtub, too.  The other one used to wedge herself into a corner in our bedroom that was next to the biggest bureau and, I swear, try to dig herself out of the house.

I guess my karma for that all that is that my five-year-old isn't the least bit fazed by loud noises.  I even worried that he had a hearing problem for a while, there, because he was so not sensitive to it.  This boy slept through three hurricanes, the first one of which had me about crawling out of my skin, the roaring wind was so relentless (that would be Frances).  Like me, he loves thunderstorms and isn't upset by fireworks or airplanes overhead.  But he definitely doesn't miss a beat, either.  Something falls in the garage, and he's like "What was THAT?"

No more beans!
