Excellent observation, Amanda!  If you substitute cherry for the vermouth in a Manhattan, you have the Broketail.

This is from webtender:  Cherry Heering is a Danish cherry liqueur invented in the late 1700s or the early 1800s by Peter Heering. It is dark red and has a flavor of black-cherries that is not overly sweet.

The manufacturing company, Peter F. Heering, was founded on December 1st 1818.

A good friend told me her parents would give her Cherry Heering whenever she had a sore throat.  Hmm, now that I have a nasty early-summer cold, I'm pouring myself a Broketail.  Cheers!
