Congratulations on your new family member, Chrissi!  She looks adorable.  8)

I'll be choosing a new buddy for my cat Vinny in the next few weeks, too.  It's lovely to anticipate another furry little one around the apartment.

Thank you, everyone! :)

I did some doggie shopping today. This is so much fun! :D
Collar, harness, leash, food and water bowl, 2 dog beds and some toys.

Why 2 dog beds, I hear you ask? ;D
Well, our Mäxi had to sleep alone downstairs for 8 years, before he finally conquered our bedroom for the last 2 years of his life. Once he was in there, we both noticed how much we like to have the dog with us at night. We love listening to the fussing of the dog while he is getting comfortable for the night, and one of the best sounds in the whole, wide world is the deep, satisfied dog sigh (rather grunt) that follows and signals the end of the day.
It says "DONE" and the world is good.

So our new cutie needs two dog beds, one downstairs during the day, and one upstairs in our bedroom. As a side effect I hope to have her house-trained faster that way. If the puppy had to sleep alone downstairs, she would have no other possibility than to pee (or worse) inside the house in case of an urgent need.

I never had a puppy before and thought I have time till summer to read up on raising a puppy. Now I feel kinda unprepared. But I tell myself I managed to raise three babies, I'll manage with a puppy. 8)

Chrissi, will you be using a crate?

Not sure yet. To be honest, you are the only person I've ever heard of using a crate. Before Ember, I had only heard rumors that Americans use them to raise puppies. People here frown at it. I don't. I think it's the same as playpens for kids: it's the way you use it that makes the difference between a short-time shelter and a prison.

Tell me more about it, willya? Did Ember sleep in there at night? Or did you only use it during the day, when you had to leave the house for an hour or so?
I can see the advantage of short time use during the day. Staying strictly at home or taking the little dog with you all the time can be impossible sometimes. I can run errands in the afternoon instead, but things like doctor's appointments sometimes just have to be done in the morning.

Tell you what: your question really made me think. Thanks for that.

The more I think about it, the more I think a crate might really be helpful and serve three purposes in one:

- as a cave-like shelter for Tina whenever she's tired and wants a little quiet. I'll put a dogbed inside, cover the crate with an afghan and leave the door open
- to secure her for short spans of time when I need to leave her alone (with closed door, of course I'll try to keep that to a minimum, and only after she's used to the crate)
- as transport box in the car

Hm. Trying to decide. I'm open for more opinions on the crate question, and thankful for experiences with it.
