Ok. mmmmm let's see....

1. become more communicative towards my boyfriend (progress.... uhm... it's getting better)

2. write more (progress... this is going VERY well...)

3. Let myself become less annoyed with obnoxious people, try to ignore them instead... (progress... not far in the process... LOL!)

personal goals - No Opportunity Wasted
« Reply #3 on: August 05, 2007, 08:38:29 am »
Some of you guys might know that I love love love the Amazing Race - I love travelling and wish I could do more - so I enjoy living vicariously through this show.

Anyway, I bought a book from the shows presenter - Phil Keoghan. About how to set yourself personal goals. I've read it once through and I'm now readin it again in order to set my own goals, but I thought I'd initially share his theory.

No Opportunity Wasted

No Opportunity Wasted is a philosophy about turning thought into action. No more shoulda, coulda, woulda. Think big, challenge yourself, ditch the excuses, ... live life NOW. He describes 8 ways to create a list for the life you want.

This is because as a teenager he had a near death experience.

Quote
ed 19, on one of his first TV shoots, Phil was exploring by scuba a sunken cruise liner in New Zealand's Marlborough Sounds. In one of the upturned interior cabins he became trapped and couldn't find his way out. In the nearly pitch-black fjord water he became disorientated. His scuba tank had little air left. He began to panic. He couldn't find the way out in the dark unfamiliar upside-down space. In the support boat above no one was aware of Phil's increasing desperation. As breath by breath the air expired from his tank he was beginning to sense that his next breathe might be his last. The support crew on the surface began to worry. A rescue diver was sent down to find Phil. With hope almost gone, he was frantically pulled to the surface.

After the shock Phil reflected on where he was at and on how precious life is. He sucked in the O2 and the next day went back to the wreck and repeated his nearly fatal dive. He also began to write a list of all the things he wanted to achieve before he died. As he worked through the initial list of 100 Things To Do, other lists evolved, which he did too. This has led to a life filled with adventure and few regrets. A life shaped by the mantra: 'No Opportunity Wasted.'

He splits the list into 8:

1. Face your Fear

2. Aim for the Heart:

3. Rediscover your childhood:

4. Get lost:

5. Test your limits:

6. Leap of Faith:

7. Shed your inhibitions/Express yourself:

8. Break new ground:

So to quote reader review on Amazon.....

Quote
No, this book will not actually change your life. Phil's tips for living, however, will show you how to change it yourself.

It's hard to pin down what's really great about this book. It's probably because the influence is so invisible. Phil Keoghan and co-author Warren Berger have a very nice, conversational writing style that communicate directly to the reader. They speak from personal experience, both their own and that of dozens of other people.

That's right -- Phil brings not only his own stories (most impressive of which is having a gourmet Italian dinner on top of an erupting volcano), but those of such inspirations as a quadriplegic surfer, a Jewish rapper, and a man who anonymously planned an elaborate wedding for a couple he'd never met. He also shows us inspiration from the inventors of bungee jumping, the Red Hat Society, actress Doris Roberts, and many others.

If you have problems setting goals, this will show you how. If you have goals but lack the courage to step forward with them, this book will show you how to do that, too. If you lack the resources, it will show you how to overcome that, or most other obstacles you may face. It will do it all gently; Phil and Warren draw you into their world and show you that it's not all that different from yours.

And for that matter, even if you already live a life of pursuing dreams, this book can show you how to "tweak" your mission and make things even better.

I've only just started on my mission, so... thanks, Phil!

As I said I'm now about to start rereading this and will update my goals as I begin to formulate them.

But i think my Rediscover your childhood goal will be to go to this in 08 hopefully!

Quote
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on a Wednesday towards the end of August in the town of Buñol in the Valencia region in Spain. Tens of thousands of participants come from all over the world to fight in a harmless battle where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

Hey Kelda!

That sounds like a great thing to do, the Tomatina!  :P LOL! It's great to have a goal like that and I am gonna check out your suggestion on that book.

You know what is also great to do and that can help you figure out which goals to set? It's making a scrap book of your life up till now, with pictures, concert tickets, cinema stubs (BBM? LOL) boarding pass slips, etc. It's fun to do and you can go back to the things that you loved doing and figure out which things you still want to do and elaborate on it in the scrap book. My dear friend who lives in the US sent me such a book and I still add to it every week, it's so liberating to do!

My sister, I need to tell her one on one, that will be tough. The rest of them I am kind of passive/agressive about. I might give them a copy of Brokeback and tell them after they watch it they can come talk to me about it.  ::)

Well, I made a start on one of by NOW goals yesterday - Aim for the Heart!

I have been waiting for the cat protection to get back in touch with me after I attended my frst meeting to arrange my going out to look after the cats.

So last night I took my first trip to the pens I will help with every Wednesday. The pens are in someone’s garden and they are absolutely brilliant – like little houses for cats! She has 5 pens, each of which can hold two cats (But only if the cats are form the same home).

So she has 6 cats in at the moment.

I tiny little black kitten called Kerry (and he’s a boy.. it made me think of our Kerry!) who they think has wandered from his owners house – so they have put up posters hoping his owner will call. He’s such a little cutie and when I was with the other cats he was yeowling away as he was desperate for attention. He was purring away when I went in to play with him and clean up his pen area, fill the bowls. He was busy climbing the walls literally too.. soo funny!

Then there was tom and jerry to mostly white cats with black patches. They were in ahome but the elderly owner has had to give them up, apparently they came I with a big list of likes and dislikes from the owner – they were cute too – Jerry was the friendliest of the two and I think they’ll be rehomed fairly quickly.

Then there was Jimmy – he was another black cat who had a found low sounding meow. He was a bit  stand offish to start with but son had a little purr.

Then there was coco – and reminds me of my childhood neighbours cat as she is black and white patched. She was another one that mieowed when I was in the other pen – and she was an attention seeking one too.

Lastly there was Henry – who hissed when I first went near him, but hes in a bit of pain – his pad on his paw needs removed they think and although hes been to the vets to get it dressed its still bleeding so it will have to be dressed for a few days/weeks until they decided what is required. He then let me pat him, but was definitely not a purer ans stayed in his bed in the corner of the pen.

I was trying to find pictures of the type of pens.. and these were the best  could get.

They each had a little heater in their open for when it got cold at night and a little electric blanket if you’ll like for under the covers of their cat bed.

So that’s my new thing.

I stayed for about 90 mins last night – you can stay longer or shorter If you like its up to you as long as the bowls are filled and the pen is clean. And the cats aren’t in trouble. But I think I will be there having a play with each of them too.

So it’s a fun little thing to do and ticks of one of my now list!!

Kelda, have you ever thought about trying to be on the Amazing Race? I think it would be absolutely wonderful to be on it; however, some of those stunts are pretty wild like jumping off a building.

Are you serious? You can't apply? That is much, much too bad. I was almost thinking we could apply as "The Sh*ltons" since my mother's maiden name was Sh*lton and we might be related  :) Guess, we would be the far removed Sh*ltons.
