Sculptures by Ron Mueck
« on: September 03, 2007, 04:11:08 pm »
Shasta542 posted a link to scultpures by Ron Mueck in the How We Live forum. I'm totally enthusiastic about those sculptures. They are incredible and I thought I'd share it with you all. Thanks to Shasta for bringing it to my attention  :-*.

Mueck is a former photographer and hyperrealist sculptor. If you want to know more about him, see wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_mueck

Now on with the pics:

I think one is especially amazing. The two ladies look so real, that the guy in the pics seems to be "wrong" somehow:

I find this one very moving. Sweet and fragile due to the small size:

The same figure as WIP:

Mueck's work is characterized by the hyperrealistic details - but his sculptures are never to scale. I think the combination of those two elements is what makes them so fascinating and a bit unsettling.

There are two examples of another sculpture, which would violate the image policy. Therefore I just post the links:

Same pic in different surrounding and different angle:

Shasta was so kind to post a link to more photos of Mueck's work:

I like Mueck's work, but I do sometimes wonder if he's essentially a one-trick pony, basically repeating variations on the same idea. Like so much of contemporary art, I have my doubts as to how much his work will mean in, say, fifty or a hundred years.

My favorite so far of the sculptures I've seen is the 'Pregnant Woman', to which you, Chrissi, felt able to only provide the links. On a side note, are even sculptures, paintings, and drawings subject to the same rules on this forum as are photographs?

I've never heard of Mueck before Shasta posted a link to some of the above sculptures. So I don't know Mueck's work apart from what I've seen by googling him. Judging from it, I'd say you're right: it's all variations of the same theme.
As for his importance to arts now or in hundred years from now: maybe he's not the greatest artist of our time, but he doesn't have to be, does he? I'm not too much into arts in genereral (but also not totally ignorant), I just judge a work of art based on the feelings it evokes in me.
His sculptures leave me amazed, intrigued, admiring and a bit unsettled. I'd like to see some of them in real sometime.

I think so. On one side, I find it a pity to cencor art only because some naked body parts are to be seen. On the other side: where to draw the line? Who is to judge what is art and what is "pornographic"? So I stuck to the basic rule that says no genitals and no bare breasts.
