Your favorite, secret (not for long), comfort food!
« on: September 05, 2007, 01:40:15 pm »
I got into this discussion at the office, and found the responses to be as varied as they could be!  I thought it would be fun to reveal our secret food fetishes (keep it clean folks :))

Mine is macaroni and cheese with hotdogs...OK...not so secret (but oh so bad for you).

My secret, and far deadlier desert is deep fried Oreo cookies...OMG...glass of cold milk and thee, and I could turn.

I love tuna or chicken casseroles, spaghetti with meat sauce and cheese, cheese enchiladas, mashed potatoes (preferably with gravy), lasagna--basically anything that's starchy.

I have always had a very pronounced sweet tooth which has really put the pounds on me in my middle years--pastries and pies, cake and cookies, anything with chocolate.

How I can relate to that Scott  :).

My current fetish are malt candies. Gawd, I love the flavor and cracking them with my teeth.

Celery and/or carrots

Wow, David, I've never heard anybody say they consider celery a comfort food! I'm impressed. For me carrots and celery are Diet Torture Foods.

Other than that, I like most of the foods people have mentioned. Chrissi, I've never heard of "malt candies." Do they have them here? Would I like them about as much as you like marshmallows?  ;)

Kelda, are "mushy peas" a particular dish, like "mashed potatoes," or are they just peas that happen to be mushy? And is deep-fried pizza supper just what it sounds like? Pizza that's been deep-fried??

My favorite comfort food is probably garlic mashed potatoes. But I like potatoes in almost any form. Also, bread, pie, ice cream, in fact most desserts, pizza, pasta, anything with melted cheese ...

As far as I'm concerned, the five food groups are: fat, sugar, starch, alcohol, chocolate.

I love eating popcorn when I feel nervous or stressed out.

Going to movies is comforting for me, and popcorn is a huge part of the draw.

Sometimes I want to go to a movie just because I'm in the mood for popcorn!

Geez... the more I think about it... this is either a really hard question to answer or it will have to be a really long list.  ::) ;D

OK, here goes...

cake and/or cupcakes (red velvet is my favorite flavor)
peanut butter cup ice cream
pizza
sourdough bagels with cream cheese
any kind of good cheese with crackers and white wine
eggs (sunny side up) with sausage patties and rye toast (I love diners and diner breakfasts... and this is often my fav even though it's sort of basic)
meatloaf with mashed potatoes
anything made out of sweet potatoes
fried chicken (only once in a blue moon... but every once in a while I become obsessed with good fried chicken)

So, any and all of those things (not all at the same time mind you  ;D ) are some of my favorite comfort foods.

Chicken noodle soup and Sprite. I always had that when I had to stay home from school because of being sick.

Chocolate gravy over homemade biscuit drenched in butter. I don't have that anymore. My granny made it for me about once a week. No one else can make it like she did.

Good morning Kelda!! You're up bright and early!  :D

Now, someone on the other side of the country may disagree with me, but here in Indiana, biscuits are rolls, like bread rolls you put butter on. We have them during supper quite often. Also, (at least in Indiana) we will serve them at breakfast and pour hot gravy over them (biscuits and gravy). Yummy!  :D

It's not a thin runny gravy like you would pour over mashed potatoes, Kelda. It's a thick starchy gravy, and it has chunks of sausage in it. Sometimes people will add bacon or ham to the gravy. It just depends. Here in Indiana, we use sausage. It's very good, especially during the winter time. It helps to keep us warm against all the cold outside!  :D

I can send you a recipe if you want me to!  :)

Oh my. Reading this thread makes me greedy for every second thing that's mentioned  ::).

David, your biscuits look similar to scones in GB. Oh, I love the British tea time: tea with milk, scones and clotted cream. In Germany nobody drinks tea with milk, that's why I didn't like tea before I learned how to do it right in England  ;D.

anything made out of sweet potatoes

Oh. Oooh. Oooooooohhhhh. I only had sweet potatoes once in my life. It was sweet potatoe fries and I had it when Lee and I stopped for lunch on our way to Estes Park. I was and still am enthusiastic about it. I would so love to eat it again and to try other things made of sweet potatoes. You can't get sweet potatoes in Germany (well, I guess in specialized delicacy shops in bigger cities you will get them, but not around here).
*sigh* I would like to eat them right now. Hey, that's another reason to go back next year (as if I needed more reasons...  ;)).

Other than that, I like most of the foods people have mentioned. Chrissi, I've never heard of "malt candies." Do they have them here? Would I like them about as much as you like marshmallows?  ;)

They are made of caramelized sugar syrup and barley malt and they have indeed a very particular flavor. I know only few people who like it. That's one of the best things about them: my children and husband don't like them  ;D.

Oh yes, the marshmellows. I had one of the best things I ever ate on that trip: sweet potatoe fries ( :D), and one of the worst things: grilled marshmellows ( :P). But we had a good laugh about it, didn't we?

Hi Chrissi!

Yes, Alex (my British boyfriend) says British scones and American biscuits are very similar, except we don't put currants in ours. Our biscuits are baked with nothing inside of them. But many people will split them open and add butter to them when served as a side dish during supper time.  :)

We've been talking about scones, and now Alex wants me to try kippers for breakfast sometime soon!

He said I should try it as a comfort food.

uhhhhh............ huh-uh! I don't think so!  :P :P

What do ya'll think? Should I try it? Would you try it?

Well, maybe. God, what we won't do for love!

I don't even know if we can buy kippers in Indiana. Maybe I'll be saved by the bell at the last minute.

kippers were one of the only fish i actually really enjoyed before I was a veggie - they def are a comfort food.

Try them! In scotland they are often a breakfast dish. Very very fishy tasting but nice!

Ah scones! and you put a thick meaty gravy over them?

see we would often have plain scones but eould put butter or a jam in it.. but not something savory.

Way back in response to Amanda's post ---> I love rye toast. And a diner breakfast is also a favorite. At Guidi's here in Westbrook, my standard breakfast order is 2 eggs over easy, sausage, a few home fries, and 1 slice of rye toast. They'll sell you a "few" home fries for 30 cents. I like grits with my breakfast, too, but you couldn't order a grit here in Maine if your life depended on it. I don't think you could find biscuits with sausage gravy, either. I have had them but not here in the northeast.

And Chrissi for you --> another comfort food for me is a salami and cheese sandwich on a kaiser roll, made with mustard!

David ---> tell Alex he can keep his kippers! That is a food you can find around here, but I don't like them.

Scott --> where were you when I was posting pictures of deep fried oreos on my blog and wondering what on earth they tasted like?

We have a wonderful bakery here in Portland that makes terrific scones. Cranberry walnut are my favorite but blueberry oatmeal are a good second choice.

its 8.53am here!

Bread and gravy? CRAZY! (But no more than you lot think deep fried pizza is so I guess we're even!!)

What exactly is deep fried pizza? Is it an actual pizza fried (an Italian would find this extremely insulting!) or somekind of turnover stuffed with cheese and tomato sauce?

Its a normal frozen pizza like you'd get in the supermarket - fried!

So not an authentic pizza cos - well its frozen! - and cos its of a generally plain varierty with not much topping - as I guess that would cause problems with the oil etc etc, as it'd all fall off into the oils so

cheese and tomato, cheese and onion, mushroom frozen pizza generally.

That would be what I call a calzone. And in my experience, they are usually baked, not fried. But I also don't fry pizza.

I have done the deep fried turkey thing, though.

About Biscuits and gravy, here in the south,we also have Red Eye gravy. You make it after frying Country ham in an iron skillet and add coffee to the drippings and pieces. It's really good. Some people add water but I think coffee is best. It's real popular in Virginia where i am from. Virginia is famous for our ham!
I alo forgot to mention grits! I love cheese grits mixed with sausage!! One of my favorite breakfasts is Scrambled eggs with cheese, cheese grits and white bread toast with lots of butter. It's best to make the eggs in the skillet after you have fried up the sausage!! Yummy!

Deep fried turkey became all the rage a few years ago.

Apparently, way down south (Louisiana) people have been deep frying turkeys for years. 3 minutes to the pound, so a 12 pound turkey is done in 36 minutes, as opposed to the hours it would take in the oven. Nice and moist, crispy skin. The downside is you can't put stuffing in.

We had a neighbor from Virginia and he was into deep frying turkeys so Tony and I decided to give it a try. We already had a gas cooker for lobster, so we just needed to buy a big pot and lots of oil. I have to say, it is quick and fast and the turkey is very tasty. All the bubbling oil is a little scary though. We have a thing that looks like a hanger to put the turkey in and out of the pot. And we set it up in the middle of the backyard, way away from anything combustible.

Shortly after we got our cooking apparatus, there were a bunch of articles in various newspapers and it seemed like EVERYBODY was deep frying turkeys. Of course, there were the idiots who tried to do in their garage, or too close to the house, or after too many beers, and ended up with a turkey conflagration. But we never had any problems.

This page has some pictures and other info:

Ha ha, this was a little bit of a joke for Chrissi.

When I was leaving Germany back in March, her husband was making me some sandwiches for my trip. I had picked out salami and cheese at the store. Jens was making me a salami sandwich, and a cheese sandwich. I said, "Oh no, put them together." They both looked horrified. And then when I asked if they had any mustard--I thought they would both faint dead away. Jens couldn't even hold the knife to spread the mustard. I had to do it. LOL

Fried Turkey is awesome! It's so juicy and tender. You can also use a syringe and inject spices and marinade directly into the turkey. You have to use peanut oil or cottonseed oil as they have a low flash point and frying a turkey requires sustained high temps!

Elle, I love that your list includes this:

Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream
Outback ribeye steak

along with this:

tofu
Brown rice
tamari

Leslie, they eat all kinds of weird things in Louisiana. Once at a zydeco festival, I ate a fried pig's tail. The flavor was fine -- like bacon -- but I was just a little too aware I was eating, well ... a tail. It was curly!   :P

And speaking of salami and cheese sandwiches, I love muffalettas: salami, ham, cheese and a spicy green-olive salad on a gigantic kaiser roll!

David, kippers are readily available in American supermarkets. They don't look as yummy as the ones you posted, though  ;D -- they come sans heads, in flat rectangular tin cans. Look near the canned tuna and salmon. I love them, though after you cook them the house smells fishy for the rest of the day. And I know how much you love fish!

What's the difference between frying and deep frying?

Frying you do in a shallow pan, turnhing the food to cook it on all sides...deep frying (which in my opinion is Gods finest idea), completely submerges the food item in very hot and very yummy fat.

What's the difference between frying and deep frying?

For example, Chrissi, a fried egg is fried, using just a spoonful or so of fat.

Fried chicken is deep-fried, using a big kettle of hot fat. Deep-fried things, such as chicken, are often (but not always) breaded.

Here are some more Fun Frying Facts:

Elvis Presley reportedly liked his peanut-butter-and-banana sandwiches fried, using a whole stick of butter for each.

At the Minnesota state fair, they offer deep fried Twinkies, Oreos and several candy bars -- on a stick.

Some attendees at the 2007 Brokie BBQ went on a short day-trip to Wyoming and enjoyed deep-fried pickles!

Oooooo, I am so **** sometimes. "frying pan" is one of the basic words children learn at school pretty early in English class  ::). Of course I know what frying is. At least normally, but apparently not today  ::) .

Yes, I know. No Cracker Barrels in Maine, though, and to be honest, I am not sure they are worth a trip to Massachusetts! LOL

No Red Lobsters in Maine, either. Maine is the only state in the US without a Red Lobster. I wonder why....

I just had some in NYC while waiting to meet Meryl.  And a Guinness.  Come to think of it - that was a whole day of comfort food - Dunkin Donuts to start off and Taiwan noodles and red wine to end...wonder if I got enough carbs in?  :D

More like, it was just not well patronized. We had one Red Lobster here for a few years and it went out of business. The location is now a TGIFriday's (I think). I don't go there, either. LOL

Or with both, ketchup and mayo. It's called Pommes rot-weiß (=french fires red-white) here.

My daughter has actually gotten hooked on french fries with vinegar.

I ate them with mayo in Belgium but here at home, I am still a ketchup sorta gal.

In Quebec, that's called poutin...french fries with gravy on them, smothered in some kind of melted cheese...heart attack on a plate.

Yes Chip butties are good.

And my chips are always salted and vinegered!

Chips and cheeses is aafter been out for a few drinks snack.

I've also had chips and curry sauce.

(and chips and curry sauc with a side of mayo).

I also sometimes have brown sauce with chips - but thats normally cos I'm eating it with something else that the brown sauce goes with.

In the east coast of scotland when you go in to a chippy instead of asking 'salt & vinegar?' they'll ask 'salt & sauce?'. Basically its slightly watered down brown sauce.(so thick vinegar kinda!)

Of Course, Kelda, chips with curry sauce!  Hmm Hmmm Hmmmmmm!

For you guys visiting from across the pond .. Just ask for a Curry Mix at any local Chippy!

(I know it looks disgusting ... but really it's yummy!)

Susie

It is my learned observation that there are two kinds of people in the world: those who squirt ketchup all over their fries and those who make a neat little puddle and dip their fries in it. I am one of the latter types of folks. My husband is too, which is how we knew we'd be compatible for the rest of our lives. And we have raised our children to be dippers, not squirters.

Looking at that picture of squirted curry sauce is making my little dipping heart ache. If I could have it on the side, I might try it though, because I like curry.

What about others? Are you a dipper or a squirter?

Oh well. If it is greasy and tastes like nothing, one can be quite certain the British will love it!

I've seen those chip butties in an amusement park in Mallorca a couple of weeks ago, and the Brits really were the only ones who ate them.  :P

A Berliner is what I would call a jelly donut. And I know that donuts are made with yeast (or can be) but fried dough is really bread dough and I think donut dough is somewhat different. Sweeter maybe?

A million years ago, there was this great restaurant in Meredith, NH that served fried bread as the bread in the basket. It wasn't sweet and I ate it with butter. Boy was that good stuff and boy, does that bring back a memory. Yum!

My favorite (current) comfort food is delish and takes only few minutes to make.  I don't have a name for it yet!  :)

-  Get a bag of Bob's 10 Grain Pancake and Waffle Mix; follow directions; make a pancake
- After flipping it over, spread a *generous* helping of organic chocolate & peanut butter spread on half of the pancake.
- Fold over the other half.  In a few seconds the chocolate melts.
- Place on a warm plate and drizzle with pure maple syrup.
- Dig in!

Maybe I can call it Maple Chocolate Peanut Butter Grain Pancakes.  :P

Trust me ... it is G-O-O-D!  ;)

If I am trying to "be good" and I get a mad chocolate craving, for instance, I usually give in ..but..
I don't get a regular chocolate bar.  I get a very dark, unsweetened Chocolate bar maybe 70-80% cocoa.  I can never eat too much of it because I get the "chocolate hit" so much quicker and I don't feel like I need 2 regular chocolate bars to "hit the spot"..  Works for me.  :)

Here is a "dangerous" recipe for chocoholics that only takes 5 minutes!  I tried it and it's not too bad (although, I'm not fussy, and will literally eat just about anything), especially wth a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream:

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE
4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional) who wouldn't choose the option:)
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug (MicroSafe)

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.  Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well..
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT ! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

And why is this the most dangerous cake recipe in the world?
Because now we are all only 5 minutes away from chocolate cake at any time of the day or night!

Yes, Kelda, sort of sad but true - I will eat just about anything!  I'm not picky when it comes to food!  I never leave anything on my plate, and rarely do I ever throw away food!

Yeah!  Maybe in our previous lives.  I always seem to have a sort of sister-hood feeling when I talk to you, or you talk to me!   I guess one never knows!

I think it's pretty yummy, and I didn't make it with the chocolate chips, since I didn't have in the house when I decided to make it.  Let me know how you like it!
