WILLIAM MATTHEWS: Working the West
By William Matthews. Essay by Annie Proulx
Denver based watercolor artist Matthews is considered the premier painter of the American West,
and this lush new book proves why.
The rugged beauty of the high plains and the quiet dignity of the people
who work the land are expertly captured by Matthew's brush.
Wide-open skies, working cowboys and Navajo reservations
are all suffused with the beauty and mystique of this untamed wilderness.
Complete with an essay by esteemed author Proulx,
this book is a glorious homage to the Living Desert.

Thanks, Toast! He is a neighbor of mine and I have been following his work for years.

I wonder if anyone would be interested in obtaining copies signed by BOTH Annie Proulx and William Matthews. They would be $50 each. I'll try to get more information...

Real nice work.  Is he?? I noticed there were no women in his paintings but some just had two guys.  ;) I guess alot of western artist don't include women in their paintings.

I really like the painting on the bookjacket.  What style is this?  Norman Rockwell for the West.  I didn't mean that as an insult.

I think you would call him a water colorist.  Norman Rockwell was an illustrator.

That white horse is simply breathtaking...If you have ever painted with water color, you will know, how hard it is.

Yes, I live in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. A lot of artists are here.

I will go over to the gallery sometime this week and browse through the book. I received a preliminary notice of publication, so the book is not officially out yet.

Rodney tells me that William Matthews illustrated the first edition of Close Range, the book that has Brokeback Mountain in it.

At this link is a list of all his books, including Close Range:
