I think red is too ... feminine for a man's luggage.

Plus, I think there is something to be said for choosing a color that doesn't call attention to itself. It might not be quite so easy for you to spot on the luggage carousel if you've checked it, but it also won't so easily draw the eyes of any criminal luggage handlers. 

Go for black, or maybe a really dark blue.

I say go for red bags.   I have a set that's a very tasteful dark red, and, contrary to what a certain Jeff around here says, I think they're very butch.  And easy to spot on the carousel.  (Sticks tongue out at Jeff.)
