I'm thinking about what I told someone earlier concerning a situation I got in and that is that you don't stick your hands in the middle of a dog fight even when you are asked to  ;)

So here is a better one

There's no use thinking about the past since it has already happened and there's nothing you can do about it, but there is use in thinking about the future since it hasn't happened yet and what you do in the present can have results for the future.

You're exactly right there Jess......trying to fix it in the present so you look toward the future, but you can't look back to the past cause you can't change it....

Yes, all three are related, but you can't change the past. You can only concentrate on the future and the way you do that is to make the present go towards what you want in the future. You can have some control over the future, but you do not have any control on the past. The past is just that, the past.

How do you change the past? I think you can try to make amends concerning things that happened in the past, but when those amends are ignored there comes a point when it becomes tiresome. There comes a time when you begin to realize that maybe you shouldn't be bothering with the amends anyway.

there comes a time when you have to accept that you have done what you could. and it is no longer something you need to beat yourself up over. The other person has their own problems to deal with and you cant help them with those. All you CAN do is say you are sorry and let be....

Yes it is very hard Jess, but you sure are right. There is only so much you can do and you can only say you're sorry so many times. After awhile it gets to the place where you just have to forget about it. But, like you say, it is hard especially when you are being very sincere about it and really trying to make things right. Things have a way of coming back to people who create situations like this between friends. I have seen that many times and I have a feeling I will see it again. So I will take your advice and quit beating myself over it. And now you want to talk about a terrific person. Well, that would be JESS  ;)

Well Artiste, that has always been my opinion although I'm always in a minority in that thought. I do not think that Jack died. I never have. There were too many open thoughts there that to me suggested that Jack may not be dead. Others typically don't see those suggestions, but I thought that when I first saw the movie and nobody can convince me differently. To me, that scene at the very end looking out the window made me think Jack was out there somewhere. To most it represents emptiness, but not to me. Also, when Laureen speaks about Jack's wishes and then says I mean about the ashes it made me think. We all know what Jack's wishes were and his most important wish was that he and Ennis be together. The ashes, well I didn't see any ashes, and that was certainly not Jack's big Wish. I always get blasted when I bring this up about Jack, but I have never been able to dismiss that thought. And with so many hidden and subtle meanings in the whole movie how do we truly know that Jack died. I don't think he did. I even see that "for absolutely sure that Jack is dead" thread in the book.

Thanks jstephens9!

Jack, you say: The ashes, well I didn't see any ashes!

Wow, you have a good point! Possibly may I suggest, Jack is alive and hiding from the public since he was so badly beaten and left for dead, that his wife has him in a special place since he is in a coma?

I knew a gay guy who had a partner in a coma for 5 or 6 months! Others, I heard for a longer time, even a year and some recovered... even. Could it be that Jack's wife knew that her husband was beaten senseless because he was a gay man?? So, she is protecting him now by such a story as the ashes?

Hugs!!

Who saw Jack's body? Who saw Jack's ashes? Did Laureen, did Jack's parents, did Ennis? Two sets of ashes are refered to, half with Laureen and half with Jack's parents, but I sure did not see any. Neither did Ennis. If I were Ennis I would want to find proof that Jack was really dead.

very interesting viewpoint, Jack... If Jack was badly beaten and an invalid or in a coma, Lureen could be using it as a chance to finally get Ennis out of the picture completely. She had her suspicions and wasn't happy about him going off to Wyoming all the time. So if he was in bad shape and had sent Ennis letters asking for help and telling him about it...well she COULD have intercepted them...

I heard this line in a movie called "Where The Heart Is" tonight and I thought it was funny. One of the women thought she was pregnant, the other one said that she had heard that if you jumped backwards a bunch of times things would be ok. She said that it didn't work for her though. She jumped so far backwards that she had to take a bus to get back and she ended up with twins.

No Artiste, no ashes seen.. The mention by Lureen.  And the the mention at Jack's daddy's place..  He said
"He thought he was too god damned good to be buried in the family plot.  Well we got a plot , and he's goin in it."
To me indicating that they had that half of the ashes...provided she sent his real ashes??
Of course how could you tell once they are ashes...its just carbon residue.

I will have to see Jack's ashes and like you say Janice ashes can be from anywhere. There was a crematory near here down in Georgia where they were just scooping up any kind of ashes and giving them to people. It turned out that they were running behind in getting people cremated. Nobody knew the difference. As the story and move indicate people are left to form their own interpretations of Brokeback. My feeling is that Jack did not die and I felt that way the very first time I saw the movie. That is my gut feeling and it will be hard to change my mind about that.

Also, when I was researching the questions for Chrissi's quiz I came across several references to the lack of love between Jack and Ennis in the movie. The majority of these comments had to do with the first night in the tent scene and these comments spoke about the rough sex with no caring, loving, compassion, etc. However, I certainly did not see that during the second night in the tent scene as well as the motel scene. To me there was loving and caring in both scenes. Beyond that when did we ever see any sexual scenes between Ennis and Jack? How would we be able to judge what we did not see? We can only guess and I sure can see the love between the two. The reunion scene was no doubt rough, but to me that was an indication of how strong that love between Ennis and Jack really was. The comments I saw related to this lack of love were also from people who did not "get" the movie.

Those ashes are an invention by Jack's wife, could that be?

I still have not seen the ashes of my past/lover/pal murdered by a muslim doctor in the hospital!  The brother and sister of my pal did not contact me for that neither!

Somehow, straights do NOT care about gays!! They did not even want me in my pal's house!

So I think that Jack wife was up to something, I ask you if you maybe think that too?

I think she could have been up to something Artiste. It is very sad what happened to your lover and very sad that his family has treated you the way they have. That must have been a very difficult thing for you to go through. I hope having as many friends as you have here on Bettermost somehow makes it easier to deal with.

I'm not sure if any of you have heard of Reichen Lehmkuhl, but he is a big proponet of getting rid of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the military. Also, I would highly suggest reading his book called "This Is What We'll Say." Right before I got so involved with Bettermost I was very active in his forum and ended up belonging to his my space page. I get things he writes in his blog and a statement he made concerning the loss of his Aunt Pat said a lot to me. I thought it meant and said a lot about life in general so I asked his permission to use the quote here and he said it would be fine. Here it is:

"Love each other because you never know.  Have fun because this is our only chance.  Pat always had fun.  Look away from negativity and laugh at it as not your problem.  Stay away from people who bring you down.  Celebrate people who make you feel loved and who make you laugh.  Stay away from people who talk negatively about other people.  Never, ever let anyone put you down.  No one is perfect and no one should expect you to be.  Love yourself.  I'm rambling, but these are my thoughts.  Life is TOO SHORT.  Thanks again for the support.  -Reichen"

Thanks for the thought of I having friends on Bettermost. My worries are that my situation is happening to many gay men, unfortunately! We, gay men as well as straights and others of goodwill, must find out more such cases and help others in many ways. Plus, the gay marriages in many countries such as Canada, England, France, Spain... plus some such efforts in the USA can help for us gay men to remain in our homes/houses, have rights to see our lover in the hospital, etc.; what do you think you, and to all of you here on Bettermost?

Aritste, since I don't have a lot of time to answer, I will just say a couple of things on this topic. I think this could be a thread in itself and it may be that one does exist speaking to these issues. In some ways to me it is not necessarily the idea of marriage, but the idea that a couple composed of two men or two women are treated so much differently than a man and woman in general. Of course this is not true of everyone, but I can look at my family who is accepting of me and even see this. Somehow I feel that if I were in a relationship it would not be treated the same way as if my sister is in a relationship with a man. In fact, I have already seen that in the past. This seems to become more evident as you expand it to society in general. It starts out at a very young age and I still see it. Little boys are asked "who's your girlfriend, oh I bet you have a girlfriend" and it is the same for little girls who are expected to have a boyfriend. And that feeling just seems to go on and on. Somehow it feels that the value of a same sex relationship becomes devalued. Society just doesn't seem to view it as meaning as much. So if two men or two women are in a relationship they tend to just get thrown out by families and others. Like you say it is not their house, it is still treated as more of a roommate situation and of course they can't see someone they love who they are in relationship with in the hospital because they are not immediate family. I have seen all these things happen to friends I have known. It may not be that way all over. It is in my corner of the world so that is all I can speak to.

Why do summer love songs always seem to mean that the end is near as soon as summer ends?

I guess because it coincides with school and new beginnings....you cant' start something new til you end the last thing...

That makes sense........kind of like the other side with songs like "See You In September," "Sealed With A Kiss," and the like that talk about people forgetting people over the summer.
