What Are Your Thoughts on Egg Nog?
« on: November 20, 2007, 12:12:07 am »

I know some people have particularly strong feelings about this traditional seasonal drink.

So, how do you feel on the subject?

I love eggnog, too!  Too bad it's so dang fattening, though.  ::)

Love it ;D Mom and Grandma use to make it and it was delicious but these days I steer clear of anything not pasturized.   Alta Dena dairy here in California makes one that is wonderful with honey, cinnamon and nutmeg, it's just right and so thick and creamy.

I've made it from scratch a few times.  If you use fresh, local eggs and lots of bourbon, no problem!  There's no comparison in taste to the pre-made stuff.

I love it, too. I can't actually remember if I've ever had it with alcohol. But, like Meryl says, it's so rich I rarely have it anymore.  :(

Paul, I like your idea!  :D

Chrissi, here's a recipe:

Quote
    * 2 eggs, beaten well
    * 3 tbs sugar
    * 1 tsp vanilla
    * 1/8 tsp nutmeg, ground
    * 2 1/3 cups milk

PREPARATION:
Blend all ingredients together and serve chilled.
If I made it, I would use homogenized eggs to avoid risk of salmonella. In practice, I usually just drink store-bought. I only have it once a year -- while trimming the Christmas tree, with alcohol. It's delicious.

I've made it from scratch a few times.  If you use fresh, local eggs and lots of bourbon, no problem!  There's no comparison in taste to the pre-made stuff.

Bourbon? I usually use brandy or rum!

The variety and range of response here is already interesting (in the poll and comments). 8)  Thanks for jumping in here.

I've tried it with both brandy and bourbon-whiskey and I like it both with and without alcohol depending on my mood.

The funny thing is, when I was very little I got sick soon after sipping a glass of egg nog... so for years I couldn't even stand to think about egg nog... because I associated it with getting sick.  But, in my teenage years, I completely grew out of that association.

And, now it's one of my favorite holiday treats.

I tend to be a fan of old-fashioned... and now somewhat odd holiday foods (like egg nog, figgy pudding, plum pudding, etc.).

Plum pudding is good!  :D
