Fun and Frustration with Babelfish!!
« on: December 02, 2007, 07:37:58 pm »
ok...has anyone used a translator program?? well, if you haven't, you are missing out on some kind of fun...or frustration...depending on what you are trying to do....

EXAMPLE!!

I am going to translate a phrase from English to German....and then back to English....and see how it comes out!!

first:

"get your scrawny asses in here"

the German 'equivelent':

erhalten Sie Ihre hageren Esel innen hier

and translated BACK into English....

"receive your hageren donkeys inside here"

 :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

(loses something in the translation!!!)

this is funny if we are just playing...but imagine if you were trying to have a serious discussion with someone and had to rely on a translation program.

French!!

LOL

English:

get your scrawny asses in here

to French:

obtenez vos ânes émacié dedans ici

and back to English:

obtain your asses here émacié inside

(god, it is a wonder we can understand each other at all....I don't know French or German...if there are any people here that DO speak those languages..do they make any sense to you? I mean before I translated them back to English)

messages across..  Its a freaking wonder he can even understand us at all...   Thanks for that illustration..

I am imagining French fan site dedicated to Brokeback Mountain with only Babelfish to translate for them.... They sit down with their popcorn and Ennis jumps out of the truck....walks up to the office there...then here comes Jack....

then Aquirre pulls up and goes inside for a minute...comes back opens the door and hollers "receive an ass in here"

they would be so confused..."Did YOU see a donkey in that movie?? well why did he say he was giving them an ass??"

Imagine THEIR open forum!!!  there would be endless talk of the symbolism of the donkey...

Hi Jess,
the German translation of the English phrase makes absolute no sense.
The word asses were translated as donkey already in the German translation.
But not only that word is wrong, the whole sentence is wrong.

Like you said it, when you have a serious discussion with someone, then it is not so funny,
because to find the right words and make a right sentence is not so easy
- and you see the translation of a whole sentence failed!

The following translation program translate also phrases,
but it didn`t find yours in exactly the same words, but similar!
I use that program often.

Keda, you said:
"that really usefuk sharon and Jess you crack me up!!"

- when I translate what you said by Babelfish,
from English to German then the translation is:

"dieses wirklich usefuk sharon und Jess knacken Sie mich oben!!"
- would mean ... Sharon and Jess crack me on the top!!!  :laugh:

the program can`t translate usefuk (I guess it means - can`t be used?!)

Jess, here is an example of Babelfish's translation of a valid Dutch phrase into English.

When I type "ik wil naar huis" which in Dutch means "I want to go home", Babelfish returned the following...

"I want to house".  ::)

Here's another one...

"Zullen we een wandeling gaan maken?" (Do you want to go for a walk?)

Bablefish said: "We a walk will will make?"

:laugh: :laugh:

Okay. One more...

This is a good one to ask Babelfish: "Zou u dat kunnen vertalen?" (Can you translate that?)

Babelfish said: "You that are able translate?"  :laugh: :laugh: Apparently NOT!!  :P

I wonder if this will even work?

I will translate something into a language I THINK nobody around here can speak, and then I will translate it back into English. Jess or anyone, try to guess what my original question was, okay?

Here it is...

Okay, I just translated it into Greek, and this is what it said...

Τι ώρα θα επιθυμούσατε να σηκωθείτε αύριο;

Now, back to English again...

Which hour you would wish to raise itself tomorrow?

God, that almost sounds obscene!! I swear it wasn't. What was my original question Jess? (Or anyone)  :laugh:

1. Weihnachten ist der wundervollste Tag des Jahres.

2. Noël est le jour le plus admirable de l'année.

3. Natale è il giorno più ammirevole dell'anno.

4. Been born them it is the more admirable day of the year.

Oh MAN!!  :laugh:

My original sentence was "Christmas is the most wonderful day of the year!"  :laugh:

I translated it from English to German, then from German to French, then from French to Italian, and finally from Italian back to English.

Okay. I'll stop playing now.  ::)  :-X  :-X

Hey David,  :D

what comes out at the end is hotchpotch,
but the translation from English to German is absolutely perfect!!! - WOW!

"Christmas is the most wonderful day of the year!"
"Weihnachten ist der wundervollste Tag des Jahres!"

Sometimes it works!  ::)

If you can't fix it, you got to stand it.

in Dutch (duh, like I need Babelfish for that... ;))

Als u het niet kunt bevestigen, kreeg u om zich het te bevinden
(what the hell?)

and back to English:

If you cannot confirm it, you got to be itself it

Okay. Let's try another contest. The winner will receive my famous magical pony straight from the lush and now frozen Indiana fields! He flies, he talks and he pees in different colors!  :D

I will type something into Babelfish from English to Dutch (I am choosing Dutch on purpose because I know my way around that language a little bit) and then back to English. You all try to guess what I originally said. The winner receives the pony.

Jess, pay attention now, because this contest will end soon, and you don't want to be a party pooper again, do you?

Here we go...

I typed something and here's what it told me...

(Nope. Too obvious. Let me try again....)

Okay. Here's what it said...

Ga voor te eten iets.

Ewww! That's pretty bad!  :P

Now back to English again...

Will eat something.

 :laugh:  :laugh:

Geez.  ::)

What was my original question?

 Okay, I think I understand where you are going with this, Janice. You are looking at the word "laten" and interpreting it to mean "later". "Laten" is Dutch for "to let" or "to allow". Something like that, anyway. (ie Laten we = Let's)

That was the SECOND hint!

NO MORE CLUES!!!!  :-X  :-X

Maybe I'll post another Greek question. The problem is I don't know what the Greek is saying before I translate it back! :)

Hey David,  :D
thank you I have received the pony!
He talks a lot, but he pees beautiful rainbow colors.
Thats great to watch!

Janice, I swear I didn`t speak Dutch,
but after the second hint I could guess the answer.
Ok Ok - Dutch is a little similarly to German!  ;)

Greek would be fine, David you could take some Quotes from Wikipedia
- there are many languages available.

Okay! Here's the next one, Jess, Dagi, Sharon and everyone!! :D

I translated something from English to Greek, and this is what it said...

Εσείς και οι δύο πηγαίνει στο θέατρο σήμερα;

Now I will translate it from Greek back into English!

You and the two go it come to the theatre today?

The person who guesses the closest will receive my magical chicken which lays copper eggs.

The one that laid the silver eggs flew away, and I'm keeping the one that lays golden ones!! Maybe we will save him for the grand prize!! :)

Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

Are you two going to come to the theatre today?  ??? Sounds too easy to be true...
