Wow! So, now we have definitive proof that Pittsburgh is a serious sports town!!  The Superbowl win and Stanley Cup win all in one year!  I feel really sorry for our baseball team, which is the only pretty bad team in the city.  Much like the Steelers' win earlier this year, there are people hooting and hollaring (very loudly) outside my apartment building for this win tonight.  I live in an area of the city where there are often big crowds after wins like this... so it's always kind of interesting on nights like this.  I'm very glad my car is in a parking garage.

Now, if only we could have a bull riding championship happen here! LOL. 8)

Yes, I was treated to the whole thing including the kissing the cup footage, since I live in a house of hockey fanatics...woo-hoo, friend. Enjoy the celebrations!!

Of course, I know people are loyal to their cities in sports, but broadening the perspective a bit, right now Pennsylvania has 1) the current World Series title, 2) the Superbowl title, and now, 3) the Stanley Cup. I guess the only major team title we don't have is the NBA championship.

The Three Mile Island babies would be 30 by now. I wonder if that has something to do with it??

LOL, sure enough. Way to go PA!

I wouldn't really say I'm personally very loyal to any sports team.  It's kind of important to keep up a little bit with the sports news in Pittsburgh for chit-chat at cocktail parties (which can be a big part of my job sometimes) and because my boss is a huge sports fan and she often likes to chat about sports too.  In fact, most sports leave me kind of cold and bored.  Though, sometimes, I'll admit it can be kind of fun to watch a game here and there.

The only sport I genuinely love following is bull riding.

Probably not. I'd venture to bet that all of those winning teams have very few Pennsylvania natives on them, and most of them would probably be under age 30. The one prinicipal exception who comes immediately to mind is the Phillies' Jamie Moyer.

If it gets too easy within the US, and you Pennsylvanians look for a real challenge, try soccer! ;) There's a whole world of competitors and some major titles to be won ;) ;D.

Well, as far as the hockey teams go here in the U.S.... including the Pittsburgh Penguins, the make up of the team is really very international, with players coming from a wide range of countries.  One of the best players on the Penguins (winning the MVP trophy this weekend) is a guy from Russia whose full name is Evgeni Vladimirovich Malkin. He hardly speaks any English.   He's very much beloved here in the city. The international aspect of the hockey teams, I think, is one of the coolest things about sport actually.

Edit to add:  After googling just now I discovered this interesting factoid about Malkin.  I hadn't been aware of this until now:

Only three years ago, Malkin sneaked away from his Russian team in Finland, made a clandestine flight to North America and stayed hidden in the United States for three days so he could join the Penguins, and they had to survive a court fight to keep him.

And, FWIW, bull riding is also kind of surprisingly international with many riders coming from primarily: Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia and the U.S.  Every year there's a World Cup event for bull riding held in one of these countries. And, the riders compete in "teams" based on their country.  So, there will be team U.S., team Brazil, etc..  This year the World Cup will be in Brazil in August.

Hi Chuck!

OMG!  I'm here to report on the craziest thunderstorms here in the Pittsburgh region last night.  It poured rain for several hours and the lightning was amazing!  Many streets and underpasses flooded.  And, the interior staircase of my 9 story apartment building flooded from the roof down... so, somewhat like a waterfall.  It's a soaking mess in the stairwell and in some of the public hallways.  *Knock on wood* my apartment itself is fine.  Although, it looks areas of the ceiling in the public hall right outside my apartment door have pretty bad water damage.

We lost power in my building around 9:30 pm last night and it's still out this morning.  So, I went to bed super early last night.  Which, actually, was probably pretty good for me.  I'm betting that I'll have to throw away almost everything in my refrigerator.  What a pain!
