Wait 'til we start talking about how, on our way to work, the sidewalk boiled with demonic energy.

Heya,

"Boneless blue" is a phrase from the story.  "Ennis, weather-eyed, looked west for the heated cumulus that might come up on such a day but the boneless blue was so deep, said Jack, that he might drown looking up."

The "boiled with demonic energy" phrase is also from the story.

LOL, no problem!

It's funny how far one can go with the bones-as-clouds metaphor.... which is what was happening a little ways back here in this thread.  Bones can easily become a Brokie in-joke or code word when it comes to describing the weather.

:)  Yeah, when I was flipping through the story the other day to find the quotation I had this same feeling.  It's been a long enough time since I've read the story... certain things were seeming fresh again.  Her descriptions... particularly of nature, are so strong and poetic.

Bones and clouds are so dissimilar.

She's brave about incorporating way-out-there images and metaphors. Since when does a mountain boil, with demonic energy no less?

Whenever I've tried something the least bit offbeat like that, my editors have sternly deleted it and switched it to something ordinary and predictable: "boneless" to "cloudless" or whatever. Annie either makes it work ... or is so brazen that the editors figure she must know what she's doing.
