Anyone unable to watch BBM stars in other films?
« on: January 07, 2008, 12:45:54 am »
I don't know what it is but I can't handle watching Heath, Jake, Michelle or Anne in ANYTHING other than Brokeback Mountain!  I bought the DVD “The Day After Tomorrow” as a demo for my new Surround Sound system, but had to give it away because Jake played Dennis Quaid’s son.   And I Really like Dennis Quaid!  I felt like something was wrong- like I was in a parallel universe or something.  The same thing has happened with Digital Cable (Showtime) and films showing Heath in medieval garb dancing a minuet and another with him as a heroin addict! Or seeing Michelle in some other film that I had to turn off immediately because all I could think of was her crying by the Apartment window when she sees Ennis and Jack take off for the mountains after the 4 year reunion.

I can only hope for the best for their careers in film but for me it will only be Brokeback Mountain that I will be able to watch them in.   It’s like they belong there.  That film has become so real to me!

I am wondering if this is just me or is anyone else experiencing the same phenomena?

Confused and Curious   ???   and more than a little bit crazy..

I had this problem for the first year or so after the film - I didn't watch much at all besides BBM - but I seem to be past it now.  I enjoyed watching Heath in CANDY and Jake in ZODIAC.  Once in awhile, I can 'glimpse' Ennis in Heath's performance or likewise Jack in Jake's, but it gives me feelings of love and fondness instead of feeling betrayed somehow...Just my own two cents...

Edited to add - I definitely don't think this is crazy, though.  I think we're all on different schedules with our healing after BBM.

I agree with everything Lynne said, Patrick. It was and is just the same for me.

He he. Last week I watched A Knight's Tale, and suddenly, there was a facial expression of Heath and I was like "OMG, there's Ennis!"
I also enjoy these brief glimpses.

Both Zodiac & Candy are now playing on Showtime.. but I can't look, I just can't... Jack & Ennis live in my mind, and their wives too.  I don't think I want to get past this.  I want them to stay with me all ways..    :-\

I love "The Wizard of Oz" and think Judy's Dorothy is incomparable.   But I love her other films and tv show too.   Very wierd feeling  ???

I saw "I'm Not There" yesterday at the theater. Heath has one scene in a coffee shop and he looks, acts, and sounds exactly like Ennis. The mouth, the eyes, everything. It was amazing and it lasted for quite a few minutes. I think it was my favorite scene in the movie!

Michelle Williams was also in IMT in a brief role.

Since BBM I've seen Candy and Casanova (Heath), Zodiac (Jake), and The Devil Wears Prada (Anne). None of them bothered me. Maybe you couldn't watch The Day After Tomorrow, Br. P., because it was a really really bad movie! I suffered through it on a plane and just kept shaking my head at its awfulness.

I'm undecided about this. On the one hand, it's weird having an 'Ennis or Jack moment' in a different movie, as if something's not right. On the other hand, I guess it can't be avoided.

I saw Proof the other week on dvd and at a certain point Jake was looking at Gwyneth Paltrow, who played the woman he was in love with, and I swear it was the same look he gave Jimbo the rodeo clown in the bar. I found it a bit unsettling. But then again, I suppose you can't 'do' that look in a million different ways.

And I agree with Leslie about Heat in I'm Not There. But there was an even bigger Ennismoment in that movie. I was watching it with my husband and Heath was clearing his throat in a certain scene and my husband said: 'That was Ennis!'. I found that funny. It didn't bother me.

But I'm not sure how I'd feel if any of them were to do a cowboy movie any time soon.  :-\

I know how feel about not being able to wacth them in other roles. Well kinda.

I seen "Casanova" and it was a awful film. But Heaths in it. I just kept getting images of Ennis and stuff in my mind. So i couldn't concentrate on the film.
Then recently i saw "Rendition" And Jake was really able to draw me in which is fantastic. He is pretty good actor. Jake can convice me of anyone. For me Heath is Ennis and allways be Ennis. He was born to play that role.
Don’t lie, don’t try to fool me, Ennis. I know what it means. Jack Twist? Jack Nasty.

Yes, Heath was born to play Ennis.  But he's also a chameleon, so I don't have any problem watching his other films.

I dont know why, but for some reason, Brokeback Mountain was such a separated place, the two
stars are not Jack and Ennis, to me.
When I see them in other movies, they arent the same people at all....I guess that is better..But the
thing that makes me see Jake in a movie and Jack I guess too when you think of it.. Is his walk.  He has a
very unique walk.  He cant disguise it.

I don't have a problem seeing them in other movies. It always amazes me how Heath simply disapears into a character, though some things he carries from character to character. I loved Jake in Zodiac, which he had more scenes, and loved Anne Hathaway in Devil Wears Prada, have not seen Michelle Williams since BBM.

The other night I saw the trailer for the new Batman Movie and man, it looks like a real departure for Heath. He was hardly recognizable. Meanwhile I saw Maggie Gylenhaal in the trailer and thought of the internet story that circulated that Heath saved her from fire on the set and she gave him a quick kiss and he was like I got better than that from your brother!

I totally agree especially after hearing him speak in his native Australian accent.   I can't imagine any other actor I know of who could pull the convoluted person that Ennis is OUT- except Heath.   I'm glad that you can watch Jake and enjoy him in other roles.  It's LIMITING for me and I'm well aware of that.

I watched part of Bubble Boy again.  I love that silly movie.  LOL.

But I keep looking at the younger Jake and seeing a young Jack Twist.   You just want to grab him and hug him.     :'(

That's the way I feel about October Sky, which I never saw until way after Brokeback. You can watch Jake do what's supposed to be a West Virginia accent, and you can hear Jack. But I like October Sky, and I actually found a copy of it on tape (  :o ) to give to my dad for Christmas, and he liked it, too.

I never got around to seeing Zodiac. The more I read about it, the less it seemed like my kinda movie. Plus, it was long, and reviews were mixed. I didn't see Jarhead until after Brokeback, and I don't recall seeing Jack in Jake's performance there.

As for Heath, I hated A Knight's Tale (I do medieval and Renaissance reenactments, so the rock music drove me around the bend). I'd like to see Casanova some day, but then I like "costumers." Candy and I'm Not There are definitely not my kinda movie.

I liked Casanova. It was light, fun, silly entertainment, plus it had lots of beautiful scenes of Venice. Heath looks so relaxed, too. I read that he signed on to do Casanova in large part to have a six month "vacation" in Venice after the stress of doing Brokeback.

I read somewhere that Heath at first thought Casanova was a serious movie and he researched for this character on the internet, then he discovered it's different from what he thought so he went along and have fun.  But I think it worked better that way so that he could unwind after the stressful experience of BBM.

LOL,  I liked the Devil Wears Prada too... It seems like Hathaway going back a bit to a more typical role for her.  But, I'll say that on some subtle, unspoken level... the Devil Wears Prada vs. Brokeback Mountain is the subject of a battle between me an my Mom.  My Mom loves, loves, loves the Prada movie and watches it all the time (my Mom is a big movie buff in general... but she tends to seriously favor "light" or "fun" movies) and she adamantly refuses to see BBM.  She also went out and bought Crash several months ago.

I have no problem watching the BBM stars in other films.  On the contrary, I've made a point to seek out their other films.  I've seen a few of Michelle's and Anne's and really enjoyed their performances.  I've seen most of Jake's and Heath's films more than once.  In fact, I own most of them on DVD.  I think they're great actors, and I find it fascinating to see what they do with different roles.  They disappear into each character they play in different ways and to different extents.  I think one great thing about BBM is that when I watch it, I see Ennis and Jack, not Heath and Jake.

I will admit, however, that for the first year after BBM was released, I saw it many times, and very few other movies.  When I did start watching other films again, they were often Heath or Jake films.  For months after I first saw BBM, I would get choked up every time I saw a picture of Heath somewhere, because I would immediately think about Ennis.

I think Lynne hit the nail on the head when she commented........

I definitely don't think this is crazy, though.  I think we're all on different schedules with our healing after BBM.

I had no trouble watching their movies..I went the next day after seeing BBM and went with my grandaughter to
see Casanova..We enjoyed it a great deal.  Then i started buying or renting all of Heath and  jakes movies one after another.
Starting with The good girl...I enjoyed them all, but for Lords of Dogtown...I didnt care for that one in the least.  And I
wasnt too fond of Proof.  I dont care much for her, i think is the reason....So no..I have no problem at all.  If anything
it made me find out much more about them as actors..

Well, I'm not having any trouble watching Linda Cardellini in Comanche Moon, but at one point Tuesday night I more than half expected her to say, "I just don't get you, Gus McCrae."  ;D

No, I don't have that problem.
I might've in the very early stages of my BBM fever but then, it wore off pretty quickly.

I think you can't fully grasp the actors' talents and abilities if you see them in one film alone.  In fact, after checking out some of their work, it might even make you further appreciate their efforts in the roles/movies you love best.  :)

~M, my dear girl~!

I know I am the one weird here.  But since my life has done a 180 degree change because of BBM, somehow, at least for the forseeable future, I just can't handle it..   It's OK to me and I guess I have learned to love myself more by the film in general.  For that reason, I can easily give myself permission for this weird hangup...   I was a different person before BBM and I'm not there anymore.

I DO agree with you, of course~!  Whenever I 'get into' a film star, I usually LOVE seeing them in differing roles, showing off the range of their talent.  My current 'squeeze' is Sean Patrick Flanery.   :P

But I've never had the pleasure of a life change after watching any film before.  So, I guess I'm in no rush to change.  BBM is that special to me~!
