Are you a child of the 60's and 70's? What are some of your memories?

A few more of mine... Silk screen shirts and bell bottom jeans, cinnamon flavored tooth picks, Dungeons and Dragons, florescent posters, dropping acid when it's 98 degrees outside, Pink Floyd and "The Dark Side of the Moon", wearing long hair, rock and roll blaring on the radio, Pintos, Pacers and El CAAAMIIIIIINOs, dip and dry artificial flowers, glow in the dark paint, UFOs, rock "computers", the Green Ghost game, macrame, poppers in a bottle, punch cards for a school lunch, Gene Simmons and KISS, the sound of a vinyl LP playing on a stereo, the protests over the Vietnam War, Sandalwood Incense, Flower Power, Beer bashes deep in the woods. The Age of Aquarius and Elvis...

What are some of your memories?

Yes! Barnabas Collins and Dark Shadows! Who could forget it? Thanks Dottie!

My Mom aways had Dark Shadows tuned in each weekday. She'd always be sitting there folding laundry and watching it when I arrived home from school.

BTW..I always thought Barnabas was sexy...even at 10 years old!!  8)

And Stonewall.....  :'(  :'(

Maybe someday it will make a difference in this country.....

                                  PET ROCKS  !!!!!

OMG. The Ur-Tamagotchi . I've never heard of them, I just looked it up in wikipedia.
I think they never found their way across the Atlantic.

I was born in 1968, so I don't remember the 60, but the 70ies:

- the only Elvis I remember is fat Elvis and dead Elvis
- Raleigh Chopper bicycles (in Germany, they were called Bonanza bikes, like the TV series, and they had banana saddles)
- macrame (oh, what a nightmare)
- ABBA
- Bonanza (the TV series)
- The Waltons (I had such a crush on John-Boy - but who hadn't?  ;D)
- Little House on the Prairie (major crush on Laura, and later I was a sucker for the actress's sister, who played Darlene Connor on Rosanne)
- Deutsche Schlager and the ZDF Hitparade (most horrible kind of music ever)
- DISCO
- matching clothes for couples: horrible. What made it worse was the fact my father refused it, so I had to wear matching clothes with my mother  :P. I hated it more than I can say...  :P  :P  :P
- bell-bottom trousers (in the worst case with an added border when they I had outgrown them)
- life without a telephone
- three (yes, three!) channels on TV. And programme started only in the afternoon (around 5pm) and ended around midnight. The other time there was only a TV test pattern on.

Remember the Troll Dolls, Dottie? My sister had some of those. My parents wouldn't let me have any. They said they were for girls!  >:(

But I had a couple of pencils with a troll on the top of them! If you spun the pencil between your hands, the troll's hair would look funny!

Wacky packages

Oh, I remember Wacky packages Paul. I collected them. I had a whole stack of wacky package stickers. I decided to stick some of them on my bedroom door and my Dad just about had a fit. He made me scrape them all off the door with a paint scraper and when I did it, the varnish came off the door too. Dad ended up sanding down the door and re-varnishing it. I NEVER stuck any more wacky stickers on my door again!  :(

I guess I am too young to remember the 60s.    :-\

I was only ten in 1976.  But I do remember all the hoopla over the bicentennial.

Things from the seventies I remember......

Disco music.

8-tracks.

CB radios.

Mom being shocked when Elvis died.

Watching the six million dollar man on TV.

Having to walk over and turn the channel knob to change the TV channel!    OMG!

Fooling with rabbit ear antennas.  Putting aluminum foil on them for better reception.    LOL

Leaded gasoline.

Gas rationing, odd-even days.

Having a red LED display watch that you had to push a button to read it.   LOL.

President Carter being attacked by a Rabbit.

Billy Beer.

Watching:
All in the Family.
Bob Newhart show.
Hee Haw
Mary Tyler Moore.
Happy Days.
Lavern & Shirley.
Alice.
Chico and the Man.
Soap!

Cars had whitewall tires.
Bias ply tires.
AM radios

Everywhere you went had a cigarette machine in the lobby.   YUCK
Pay phones at every exit ramp and all over town.

Gas stations gave away dishware with a fill up.

Gas stations were "Service Stations" with repair service bays, not quickie marts like today.

No such thing as self service either.

All the bruises and sprained ankles from people falling off their platform shoes.

Andy Warhol movies: Flesh, Trash, Frankenstein, Dracula, Lonesome Cowboys (Talk about a gay cowboy movie!)

Little Joe Dallesandro who was only 5' 6'' and hot as a firecracker.

Anybody remember those "Space Command" remote controls? I think they were made for use with Zenith TVs. Maybe Quasar. Anyway, they clicked, or rather "boinged". They made a funny boing sound when you pressed the button and SOMETIMES the channel would change. lol Our neighbors had one and it only worked about 20 percent of the time. I think you could only change the channel with them, and maybe turn the TV on and off too.

Did any of you have those Major Matt Mason action dolls?

Mine had a little backpack on him, and he could climb up and down the walls! He had a moon rover too!  :D

I also had a Big Jim doll and he had his own camper!

My sister had the Barbie camper.

I sure do remember all those things Dottie!! I especially remember the Silly Putty because I was always putting it in my mouth. I don't know why I did it. It didn't taste very good. I'd stick it in my mouth and chew it like gum.

I was always eating things I shouldn't... Silly Putty, Play Doh, school paste, finger paint, my mom's lipstick...

.... the list goes on and on.

I also remember a big ball with a handle on it. I'd sit on it and bounce around the basement! I forget what those things were called. Mine was blue I think.

Yup!

Mine looked like the blue one the girl is bouncing on. I never bounced on mine outside. I only used it in the basement. It could really bounce high too. Or at least it seemed like it was very high.

Thanks Fran!! :D

Afros (on black and white people)

The "Bump" (my older sis would practice it to "Jive Talkin" by the Bee Gees)

Rotary phones (if you had a "push-button" phone, you were on the edge of technology)

Feminism was called "Womens Lib"

Orange or Olive-green carpeting/furniture

Station wagons with the wood-grain exterior strip

Vans with groovy painting on the sides

Striped socks

Socks with fitted toes (like gloves for your feet)

Big hoop earrings

Making the 2-fingered peace sign

"SHORT-shorts"

Percussive wah-wah pedal guitar  "wacka-WOW wacka-wacka-WOW . . . "

Drive-thru banking with the plastic canisters (no ATMs yet)

"I'd like to buy the world a Coke, and keep it company . . . "

Women's hair in a bun (held by a piece of leather & a stick) with a big curlicue hanging down each side of her face

Paisley on everything

Tight, tight, tight pants (how did guys stand that? looked uncomfortable...)

The Bicentennial quarter

In my church, ladies wore round lacy things on their heads. Colored to go with the rest of their clothes.

In the rain, ladies wore plastic head coverings tied under the chin to protect their hairdos.

Ashtrays in every room

Cigarette holders

"You've come a long way, baby."

Metal garbage cans

"Expensive" 53¢ gasoline

Deep, see-thru plastic umbrellas

Roller skates

Skateboards with crazy art and WIDE wheels

Portable transistor radios  (FM = a big deal)

"Line dancing" meant disco

More specifically olive green carpet and orange drapes,,,,,,,,,yikes.

Turquoise tile in the kitchens and bathrooms.  And gold appliances.

All that weed made the colors seem bland i guess, so they needed bright to contrast...

Remember the clackers?

I had several pairs of clackers. One of them even glowed in the dark! Sometimes they would get away from me and crack me upside my head.  >:(

It hurt too.

Mine was blue I think.

life was hard back in the Dark Ages wasn't it?

It sure was! If the signal wasn't coming in very well, my parents would make me walk over and adjust the antenna for them. And if the signal suddenly improved while I was holding it, they would make me stand there with the antenna in my hand until the show ended.

I really hated that!

Lobo

town squares with real stores

school bus rides that lasted over an hour because we lived so far out

desegregation

fat pencils

cars with no A/C

I remember many of those things too Jess. Well, not desegregation because that occurred around 1949 or 1950 in Indiana. But I do remember bussing, which was the second step of the desegregation process. That happened in the 1970's.

I also remember all the Army trucks. We lived about a mile from Fort Benjamin Harrison and there were many Army trucks around here. They closed Fort Ben in the 1990's and now only the finance center remains. It is still military, but many of the Army Officer's homes have been converted into apartments or condominiums. I remember hearing Reveille and Taps each day from Fort Ben when I was a kid. You could easily hear the bugle from our house.

I mentioned Sea Monkeys and mood rings in the title of this thread. Anyone remember those? I had a mood ring, but it stayed blue most of the time. I forget what that color meant.

Blue=cool, very relaxed
Green=nervous+tense
Yellow=?/don't remember
Orange/Red=angry
Purple=sexy

    * Blue-green: Somewhat relaxed
    * Green: Normal or average

    * Gray: Very nervous or anxious

I learned how to hook and unhook bras back when I dressed mannequins at L.S. Ayres. After about two years of doing that, they moved me to the Men's store where I sold things like Ralph Lauren shirts and Calvin Klein jeans.

That was 25 years ago and I've never touched a bra since. A wasted talent for a gay guy if you ask me.

We had shag carpeting in just about every room of our house in the seventies. In the sixties I remember we had hardwood floors in many of the rooms with awful brown and orange yarn area rugs in the living room and the basement. When I think of the 60's, those ugly yarn rugs is one of the first things I think about. Actually I was glad to get the shag carpets. I hated those yarn rugs even when they were considered "fashionable".

Remember the "Bicentenial Minute"? Which network did that? Anyone remember? I think it was CBS.

Oh, and "It's 11:00. Do you know where your children are?" I think that might have been from the 1980's.

Thanks Laura!!

So Dark Blue meant Happy, Romantic and Passionate?

My ring was always blue.  I guess this helps to explain my gay, lustful and horny impulses back then! ;)

Shee-it! I still have my original Wacky Packages from childhood. They are my favorite subversive product of the 1970's.
I love my 70's MAD magazines, too. I have a ton of those, too.

OMG!  I'm sorry, but whoever designed those two had to be gay.   8)

Isn't it funny how easily gay-subtexted stuff can float harmlessly right into the kids' market? Like, in the 70s all us kids loved the Village People. (Gay subtext? We didn't have a clue, LOL!)

Garage sales were big in the 1970's, too. Once my mom discovered that she could actually sell all of our old junk, nothing was safe! I sold tons of my old comic books, MAD magazines, bell bottoms, even our old black and white TV!

I had the Big Jim camper too Paul! And my sister also had the Barbie camper. We used to play together and this was about the only time we actually got along with each other. lol

I wish I still had my Big Jim camper. I have no idea what happened to it. Mom probably sold it in a garage sale.

A couple of years ago I cleared out my garage and sold a lot of  old toys on e-bay.  I sold my Big Jim, Camper and all his clothes and other stuff for $100.  My GI Joe and footlocker with uniforms and gear went for $65.  I also sold all the Star Wars toys I had, in their original boxes... I had the Milenium Falcon, Luke's Sandcar, Darth Vaders Tie Fighter, Lukes X-wing fighter and all the dolls from the first movie those brought in a little over $200 combined and I had the Original Star Ship Enterprize in it's box with all the dolls we got $97.00 for that.  I also sold my Chatty Cathy Doll (she was the first one to talk), my Betsy Wetsy Doll, a Pooh Bear and a Paddington Bear.  Even old board games like Concentration, Password, Chutes and Ladders and Stratego were bringing over $10 each.

Our old toys are worth a fortune if they are in good condition and still in their original boxes  :o

I hardly have any of my childhood toys anymore. I have a few stuffed animals from when I was a small child, and I have my baby blanket. It's blue and it has a little lamb jumping over the moon. And I have my first Christmas stocking. It is green with Christmas animals on it and a bell at the bottom - one of those little round jingle bells.

I have most of my albums (LPs) but I don't plan on selling any of them. I don't have anything to play them on, but I do have many of them on CD now.

Congratulations on your successful Ebay sales Dottie! :)

Candy bars cost 10 cents and an 8 ounce bottle of Coke was a nickel. Cigarettes were 30 cents a pack (I didn't smoke, but my Mom did) and men went to places called a barber shop to get their hair cut. We still had town squares and stores with names like "Ralph's Butcher Shop" and "Ray's Hardware Store". Gas was 32 cents a gallon (Oh wait.. gas was 32.9 cents a gallon... what does that 9 mean anyway?) and service attendants pumped it for you. Every neighborhood had a soda shop and a cafe for catching up on all the latest gossip. We had dime stores not dollar stores and a business with a name like Wal-Mart probably sold wallpaper and wall paste. Postage was less than 15 cents and folks still smiled and said hey when they passed each other on the street. TVs received 3 channels, not 300 and windows were something we looked out of, not something we left clicked with a mouse. Children still respected their elders and society still respected the elderly. School violence meant a fist fight on the playground and children went to home rooms, not home schooling.

Those are a few more of my memories from the 60's and 70's. :)
