SAG Awards on TNT and TBS
« on: January 27, 2008, 09:55:54 pm »
I've heard that Heath and Suzanne Pleshette will receive memorial tributes tonight at the SAG Awards, which are on TNT and TBS right now, up til 10:00 ET.  If you can, tune in to watch.  Haven't seen anything so far.

The In Memoriam list used the music from the Brokeback Trailer (So Was Red from Shawshank Redemption)

Heath's pic as Ennis by the stream seemed to be added later
in silence
I think it was beautiful.

Hunh.  I don't know why, but I thought they were going to do more of a tribute to Heath instead of tacking him on the end like that.  :(

Gads, that music was from the "Brokeback" trailer.  I was crying just from that.  :'(

I just love that they used Brokeback music.  And that, poignantly, the music died out just before Heath's picture.

Me too - I felt kind of gipped, and in fact it seemed they ran out of music by the time his picture was displayed. It was neat to hear the Shawshank Redemption theme from the BBM trailer throughout the tribute though.

roryennis, if you can do that, it would be great.  I'm sure someone will have it up soon.

Jack, I saw the piece on Sunday Morning and taped it.  It was nice, but I wish he hadn't tied Heath in with other stars who had died of drug overdoses.  :(

I don't have a television, but I saw this on the web:

From The New York Times Weblog

The Carpetbagger by David Carr

http://carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/

January 27, 2008,  10:03 pm

Aiming Point

In the least surprising win of the night, Daniel Day-Lewis was named the best leading actor in a dramatic role. He was halting, smashing and effecting in receiving the award. Instead of merely saying he was humbled, he clearly demonstrated. “It has always been the work of my fellow actors, including my fellow nominees, who have given me a sense of regeneration.”

Heath Ledger gave it to me,” he said. “We wanted to follow him and yet we were afraid to follow him.”

“In Brokeback Mountain, he was unique. He was perfect. The scene in the trailer at the end of the movie was as moving as anything we have ever seen. I‘d like to dedicate this award to him.”

Meryl, I agree with you about how the piece on "Sunday Morning" started out. In fact I started to get mad about it, but when they got past that I was ok. I wish there was some way we could have a tape of all the various good television coverage of Heath. I have missed so much that I would like to see.

It is gestures like Lewis's that lighten the collective load of our sadness because we know that Heath is honored and will not be forgotten.

When I replayed the memorium, I listened more closely.  When the music stopped, and Heaths picture was displayed I heard a quiet 'sigh' from a few of the audience members.  It was faint, but it was there, and it was touching.

D. Lewis’ acceptance speech was a complete touch of class, and in a world of acting, genuinely seemed sincere.

Bravo.

He was wonderful!!! I saw There Will Be Blood and he was wonderful, as he was in Gangs of New York. But, his tribute to Heath Ledger was absolutely moving. I hadn’t remembered that Heath Ledger played Billy Bob Thornton’s son in Monster’s Ball until I saw a tribute to Heath after he passed away. That scene, the same one Daniel Day-Lewis mentioned where his character kills himself after telling his father he always loved him, was one of the most emotional moments I have ever had in a theater. His character’s loss of companionship because of the times he lived in in Brokeback Mountain makes us all realize how lucky we are to be alive and to treasure the people in our lives. Thank you, Daniel Day-Lewis, for your tribute to a great actor. A Heath Ledger comes along once in a very great while. Ditto for a Daniel Day-Lewis.

What’s up with him going on about Heath Ledger? First breaking down on Oprah and now this? Its odd…he’s admitted to never having met him, much less worked wiht him, its feels unseemly.

DDL has clearly been affected by HL’s death. I applaud the courage both these men showed in a world that glosses over loss and shines a spotlight on scandal. Heath, we’ll never know if the glimmer of his vast talent would have grown to a fire. Daniel, we are illuminated by your wisdom and compassion. Bravo!

I am so happy he won this award, and should/must win the oscar. This speech shows his true character, and as he spoke, I was actually close to tears, and so was he. He truly is an actor’s actor, and knew Heath was too, and loosing that is the most tragic thing. I wish this was all a dream (Heath’s death) but when Daniel said this speech, it made it more real, but it made Heath’s life ever more beautiful.

Daniel Day Lewis is magnificent.

Heath Ledger played some awful roles, but he WAS Ennis in Brokeback Mountain. I just read the short story, and I don’t know how Heath Ledger transformed himself from his real-life persona to the complicated, closeted gay shepherd he played in Brokeback. DDL is one of the most brilliant actors ever. For him to dedicate his award to HL was an act of beauty, not ego. He was acknowledging a brilliant performance by an actor who could have been his peer.

DDL saw Heath’s acting, and that was enough.

It’s a professional judgement - and the best.

I first fell in love with Daniel Day-Lewis’ acting ability when I saw ‘My Left Foot’ … WOW - WHAT TALENT! At first, I too thought it was a bit strange, his statements on Oprah about Health Ledger’s passing and again on his dedication to Heath tonight, but then I realized ….. he truly admired Heath’s work and also is realizing what WE will ALL miss out on with Heath’s passing. I did not know Heath Ledger either - just like Daniel Day-Lewis - but I’ve been touched emotionally by his passing. I was impressed by Heath’s acting in Brokeback Mountain and Monster’s Ball. There was something you could tell about him that there was truly going to be some great acting ahead of him in his future. We are all going to miss out on what he may have given to us - but how much more his family is going to miss out on not having him around. Daniel Day-Lewis is a voice for quite a few of us out here. True class and heart.

Wow. That speech of Daniel Day-Lewis's sounds amazingly classy. His tribute on Oprah was wonderful, too. (Thanks for sharing it, Eric.)

I read someplace that the SAG in memorium had already been planned before Heath's death, and they had to scramble to add him to it. That may explain why his picture appeared as if added on at the last minute.

But it sounds as though DDL more than made up for it. Heartfelt respect from an admirer of Heath's work, from someone who hadn't even known Heath personally... what's Tolkien's line about the praise of the praiseworthy again? (Meryl? Mikaela?)
Watch out. That poster has a low startle point.

How perfect.  Than you Meryl.

Faramir. That's it. Thanks, Meryl.

(Shit. Now I'm wishing that I could see Heath play Faramir. Dear brain: stop it, ok? Just stop.)

I'm guessing that we now know at least one person who voted for Heath for the Oscar two years ago...

I just want to express my newfound appreciation for Daniel Day Lewis.

I had been getting kind of fed up with all the hype he's been getting (though I probably shouldn't judge--I haven't seen There Will Be Blood yet), but I think that rough times like these really bring out the person within, and DDL is showing himself to be not only a truly decent human being, but a real class act. I'm so glad he did that.

Day-Lewis Dedicates Award to Ledger

By BETH HARRIS
http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5hl4dxbkJUsm0OAYCuQOiJhl_F3dQD8UELA4G0

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Daniel Day-Lewis dedicated his Screen Actors Guild Award to Heath Ledger.

Day-Lewis, who was honored Sunday as leading actor for his performance in "There Will Be Blood," gave an acceptance speech that echoed comments he made last week about Ledger, the 28-year-old Australian actor whose death stunned Hollywood, on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

"In 'Brokeback Mountain' he was unique, he was perfect," Day-Lewis said. "That scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything I think I've ever seen."

Backstage, the 50-year-old Day-Lewis said he never met Ledger but the actor's death was all he had been thinking about recently.

"I thought he was beautiful. I just had a very strong feeling I would have liked him very much as a man," he said. "I admired him very much. I'm absolutely certain he would have done many wonderful things in his life."

Several prescription drugs were found in the apartment where Ledger's body was found Tuesday by his masseuse. The cause of death is awaiting toxicology tests.

During the awards show religious protesters gathered across the street from the Shrine Auditorium, toting signs that read, "Heath's in Hell," a reference to his "Brokeback Mountain" role in which he portrayed a gay cowboy.

"We should leave him alone and we should leave his family alone to suffer their unimaginable grief in private, and it's not going to happen," Day-Lewis said backstage. "We should just stop encouraging people to have greater and greater interest in raking over every detail, which is none of our business anyhow."

Ledger's photo from his Oscar-nominated role in 2005's "Brokeback Mountain" closed the SAG award show's in-memoriam segment.

Lewis coming out with this unprecedented tribute and dedication, following his comments on Oprah, as well as some rather man-crushy comments by John Travolta earlier this week - are we seeing the revelation of Hollywood Brokies?

Daniel Day Lewis is a very fine actor in his own right, very much in the same mold as Heath.  He shuns Hollywood and publicity, he lives in Ireland and works as a carpenter between acting jobs and is very picky about his roles.

A very heartfelt thank you to Eric for posting and to John for putting it on youtube. Being European, I have no other choice than to hope someone will put it online.
(I would also like to see the memorial sequence, so if anyone comes across it, please post the link here.)

DDL is my hero today. I'm so thankful to him for this. It really means a lot, I think to all of us.

This reminds me so much of the awards season two years ago... When BBM and Heath and Jake were honored so often ... when they owned the world and nothing seemed wrong (thanks Laura) ....
God, how I wish I could see their faces somewhere in the crowd this year ....

I second this. Do I ever!

I'm so happy it's out on YouTube, otherwise we'd never get to see that. I was sleeping more easily tonight than any night since I heard the news. I think it must have been DDL vibes doing it. That was a wonderful, moving tribute, - sincerely recounting memories of how Heath's best roles impacted him since he's got no memories of him in RL, and it was so sincere and so perfect. And so honest - he had no reason at all, - especially not DDL who is as far removed from the ordinary celebrity hoopla as it's possible to get - to speak about Heath, exept out of honest admiration.

Thank you Daniel Day Lewis.

Combined with Chris Nolan's in memorian article in Newsweek, equally sincere and low-key though filled with actual  memories of Heath.... skateboarding into set in his woolen cap...  I feel that Heath is finally getting the respect and tributes he deserves after the indignified, horrid media coverage of the first few days.

Thak you again for putting DDL's acceptance speech up on YouTube. I'm off to watch it again. With tears in my eyes.

Uplift at the SAG Awards

By Richard Corliss

The Golden Globes was turned from a Hollywood party to a ragtag fake-news conference that should have been on pubic-access cable. The Oscar telecast may be missing many of its top attractions. The writers' strike has crippled or threatened other awards shows, but last night the 14th annual Screen Actors Guild bash went on — the first trophy mart of the year to be televised, thanks to a waiver from the writers. It is also the one show with no "little people" awards: no sound editors, no writers or directors, just the beautiful people on the screen. Thus the SAG show had the sacred duty of reminding people what these orgies of self-congratulation are for: to parade famous flesh. It meant to brand on viewers' minds the impression all Hollywood actors want to make: We look faaaaabulous!

They did, too, and not just your familiar stunners like Vanessa Williams, Diane Lane and a younger-than-springtime Tom Cruise. Ellen Burstyn, 75, seemed as fresh and buoyant and prominently apple-cheeked as she did three decades ago in Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Ruby Dee is 82, and has been in movies (and a lot of places more important, like the civil rights struggle) for 60 years. But when her brief role in American Gangster made her a surprise winner of the supporting actress award — sorry, Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role — she glided on stage to display all the class and radiance of a perennial American beauty.

And Julie Christie, who took the Most Notable Movie Thesping by a Person of the Female Persuasion prize for Away from Her, looked preternaturally glamorous at 66. Christie was 42 years removed from her first Oscar nomination, for the swinging Londoner of Darling, but she could have passed for that seductive bitch's older sister, not the elderly lady fading into Alzheimer's she played in her little Canadian movie. Reeling off the names of a dozen producers and fellow actors from the film, she smiled and added, "And if I've forgotten anyone, it's just because I'm still in character."

Javier Bardem, the cool Spanish dude who plays a mean malefactor in the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men, won for Best Supporting Actor Who Happens to Have a Penis. (No Country also took the Best Film Ensemble prize.) Bardem reminded the crowd that, in his country, actors used to be deprived of a Christian burial because they were suspected of being prostitutes and homosexuals. So, we've come a long way, baby. (He apparently hasn't read the showbiz gossip columns lately.) Bardem also thanked for Coens for hiring him and, since they were also the film's editors, "for the hard work of choosing the good takes, instead of ... the ones where I really sucked."

As expected, Daniel Day-Lewis' role as a deranged oilman in There Will Be Blood won him the award for Best Performance by Someone Who Kills a Guy in a Bowling Alley. Day-Lewis introduced a somber note by speaking of his admiration for Heath Ledger, the 28-year-old actor who died last week. He praised Ledger's performances in Monster's Ball and Brokeback Mountain, and dedicated his award to the late Australian.

The SAG awards appeared to confirm the status of Day-Lewis, Bardem and Christie as front-runners for their respective Oscar awards. Dee was a sentimental favorite among the membership: Ossie Davis, her actor husband of 57 years and another lion for racial equality, died two years ago. But she still has stiff competition from Cate Blanchett, who impersonated Bob Dylan in I'm Not There, and Amy Ryan, multi-award-winner as the rotten mom in Gone Baby Gone.

As for No Country, it's the favorite for the Best Picture Oscar, but is still susceptible to a late charge by There Will Be Blood, which opened in a limited run Christmas day and is just now going into wide release. The SAG Ensemble prize is nice, but not conclusive. In only five of the past 12 years has the Ensemble award coincided with the top Oscar. (Last year Little Miss Sunshine won at SAG, but The Departed got the nod from the Motion Picture Academy.) The reason for the discrepancy is simple: acting awards are all about acting; movie awards aren't. And in the final Oscar ballot, actors may be the largest voting bloc, but they represent no more than 30% of the Academy membership.

One other thing, SAG. If you're going to de-sex the awards into subdivisions of Best Actor — if you're all actors, and the gender doesn't matter — then why not just give one prize, eligible to every performer in a leading role? You could call it Best Actperson.

But I shouldn't end on a rancorous note. As a moviegoer and a TV watcher, I'm truly grateful that the Screen Actors Guild invited us to their party. And thanks, everyone, for dressing up so nice.

Thanks for that, Mikaela.

I am a mess this morning. I just had to say that!

I was just thinking about Daniel Day-Lewis. Some have commented (not here--out in the webosphere) that he didn't "know" Heath so they are puzzled by his tributes, first on Oprah and now at the SAG Awards. But I am not puzzled at all. I didn't "know" Heath either--if "knowing" means meeting someone in person and having a conversation. But I did know Heath. He was as real to me as any person and has touched me profoundly and deeply. My grief is real, too, and it seems to be hitting some sort of high point (or maybe that should be low point) today.

Thanks, everyone, for being here. I am glad I didn't watch that show last night. I didn't sleep as it was. If I had the images I just watched on YouTube running through my head all night, I'd really be a wreck.

From the New York Times:

Stars Seize Their Chance to Shine at SAG Awards

By EDWARD WYATT

LOS ANGELES — There is no show business without a show. And so, in a year when a writers’ strike has all but shut down much of Hollywood, the Screen Actors Guild Awards — as anonymous in most years as “Cop No. 3” in a summer blockbuster — took top billing Sunday and drew an inordinate amount of star wattage.

The Golden Globes ran in diminished form this year and the Oscars broadcast is still in question, making the SAG presentation at the Shrine Auditorium the first and perhaps only chance this year for Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Cate Blanchett, Tommy Lee Jones and George Clooney to walk the red carpet and talk about whose fashions they were wearing and what they have been doing without any new scripts to read.

But once the awards ceremony started, it began to seem like the old Hollywood still prevailed. The first three awards of the evening went to cast members of “The Sopranos,” with James Gandolfini winning for best male actor in a drama series and Edie Falco taking the award for best female actor in a drama series.

The entire cast then took the stage to receive the award for best ensemble in a drama series. “It is bittersweet because the show is over, but we are happy that we won,” Steven R. Schirripa, who played Bobby Baccalieri on the series, told reporters backstage. It was a final moment of recognition for a show that many believed to be the best on television. Only about a half-hour earlier, Mr. Gandolfini had walked down the red carpet all but unnoticed, wearing a beard and a look of weariness at having to put on his “Sopranos” persona one final time, almost a decade after the series took to the air.

The awards for film, which dominated the second half of the ceremony, seemed like a possible preview of the Oscars — or perhaps a replacement, depending on whether that awards show makes it to the air next month. The Writers Guild has threatened to picket the awards and has so far refused to grant a waiver to allow union writers to work on the show.

Each of the winning actors Sunday is also nominated for an Oscar in a similar category. Daniel Day-Lewis won for best male actor in a leading role for “There Will Be Blood” and dedicated his award to Heath Ledger, the star of “Brokeback Mountain,” who died last week in New York.

Asked backstage about his remarks, Mr. Day-Lewis said he had never met Mr. Ledger but was nevertheless struck hard by his death. “I suppose that’s all I’ve been thinking about for the last few days,” he said.

Julie Christie won for best female actor for her role in “Away From Her,” a performance that made her an early favorite for the Oscar. In a nod to the current labor troubles, Ms. Christie noted that it was wonderful to receive an award from one’s own union, “especially at a time when we’re being so forcefully reminded how important unions are.”

“No Country for Old Men,” a bloody modern-day western, won two awards, for best performance by a cast in a motion picture and for best supporting male actor, a prize that went to Javier Bardem for his portrayal of the murderous Anton Chigurh. Accepting the ensemble award on behalf of the cast, Josh Brolin thanked the film’s creators, Joel and Ethan Coen, whom he called “freaky little people” who made “a freaky little movie.”

Ruby Dee won for best female supporting actress in “American Gangster.” The ratings-challenged NBC series “30 Rock” also took two awards, with Tina Fey winning for best female actor in a comedy series and Alec Baldwin winning for best male actor in the same genre.

Ms. Fey, who is both an actor and a writer and who has been a highly visible presence on the picket lines, was the first winner to address the writers’ strike onstage. “I want to thank everyone is SAG for being so supportive of the Writers Guild of America,” she said.

The cast of “The Office” won for best television comedy ensemble. Queen Latifah was named best female actor in a television movie or mini-series for “Life Support,” and Kevin Kline won in the male version of that category for “As You Like It.”

Remarks by individual winners aside, the telecast tried to tread delicately around the fact that, in a season of labor strife, this was an awards ceremony sponsored by a labor union.

Some actors who also serve as writers wore silver and black lapel buttons with the initials W.G.A., signifying the Writers Guild of America, the union that has been on strike since Nov. 5.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards received a waiver from the Writers Guild and a promise that writers would not picket the show. It was the threat of pickets at the Golden Globes that essentially shut down that production, turning it into little more than a press conference.

It was not as if Sunday’s awards show put a lot of writers back to work, however. Unlike most awards shows, the Screen Actors Guild Awards presentation does not use a master of ceremonies and therefore employed only one writer.

Asked if he would honor picket lines and refuse to attend the Oscars, Mr. Day-Lewis said he would abide by the decision of the Screen Actors Guild. “Whatever decision they make is the right one as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Christina Applegate, star of the ABC series “Samantha Who?,” said in an interview on the red carpet that she was hoping that the actors union would not begin its own strike when its contract is up at the end of June.

Noting that the strike has caused collateral damage to thousands of people in Los Angeles — seamstresses, caterers, dry cleaners and the like — she said, “I don’t think we can hurt them anymore.”

I thought I was mostly over the grief, but I watched this memorial from the SAG of the many actors who died recently and seeing Heath there with the rest who have passed away drove home the fact that he's really gone.  He's the last one to appear and I just broke down again in tears...

I've struggle with denial/disbelief, but this made me know again, Heath has passed away.  It' s gonna take longer than I thought to get over his death, but I'm glad I watched it, so thanks for the link, Mikaela, because it helps... yes, tears help heal the sadness.

MaineWriter, I have a post on the grieving thread that affirms what you say, you're so right, we did know Heath, we knew that part of him he gave us in his art.   I you read it, it may help you.  It's was an attempt at saying goodbye, but like I said, I'm still not there and I'm not sure I'll ever quite be... over the loss of Heath Ledger.  I think whenever I see him in a film I will feel a twinge of pain and sadness.

Thank you, Bay City John, Eric, and Mikaela for the links.

I feel that we are Daniel Day-Lewis in that we didn't "know" Heath, but have deeply admired his work and his humanity.

DD-L is a class act and did a beautiful, selfless thing.  How touching of him to dedicate his award to Heath.

I feel that we are Daniel Day-Lewis in that we didn't "know" Heath, but have deeply admired his work and his humanity.

DD-L is a class act and did a beautiful, selfless thing.  How touching of him to dedicate his award to Heath.

You're right. Watching him, I felt like the was speaking for all of us.

Here's an article on the SAG Awards

Silent flicker, and applause, as peers share their loss
Less than a week after his death, it seemed fitting that Hollywood's first public tribute to Heath Ledger should be a short, silent one - like the sudden, stunned intake of breath that greeted news of his passing. He appeared for a moment on the screen, not saying a word, in a glimpse of the defining performance that showed just that kind of genius: saying everything by saying nothing at all.

The flicker of film of Ledger from Brokeback Mountain was all that was needed, and the crowd at the Screen Actors Guild awards in Los Angeles said the rest with their hands, applauding in tribute as the Australian's face brought an end to the video remembrance of actors lost in the past year. It was an eclectic compendium, with Ledger by far the youngest on the honour role. Allan Melvin, who played Sam the butcher on The Brady Bunch, died a few days before Ledger, but at 84 could be said to have earned his place; ditto for Alice Ghostley, the ditzy witch Esmerelda from Bewitched who made it to 81. Jane Wyman - the first Mrs Ronald Reagan - Deborah Kerr, Pavarotti and Marcel Marceau were similarly of such an age that marking their passing didn't make anyone flinch.

It was different with Ledger, whose death at 28 defies comfortable discussion or acceptance. Too young, too talented; it was as if no one knew what to say. The only actor to broach the subject was, fittingly, an actor of similar outsider intensity, Daniel Day-Lewis. Accepting the best actor award for his role in There Will Be Blood, he spoke carefully, slowly, powerfully. It had always been his peers who had inspired him to "go back into the arena one more time", the British-born Irishman said.

"Heath Ledger gave it to me," he said, and the mention of the name seemed to break a spell. The room broke into applause. Day-Lewis went on: "In Monster's Ball, that character that he created, it seemed to be almost like an unformed being, retreating from themselves, retreating from his father, from his life, even retreating from us, and yet we wanted to follow him, and yet we're scared to follow him almost. It was unique. And then, of course, in Brokeback Mountain, he was unique, he was perfect." More applause, then he concluded: "And that scene in the trailer at the end of the film is as moving as anything that I think I've ever seen. And I'd like to dedicate this to Heath Ledger."

Ledger never won an Actors Guild award, or any of the other major international acting awards, but there was no doubt of the esteem in which his peers held him, particularly after Brokeback. Cate Blanchett, an Australian who is no stranger to nominations, was presented with a Modern Master award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on the weekend, and used her speech there to describe her compatriot as "an extraordinary actor and well on his way to becoming a master himself". She'd been widely expected to have a chance to pay further tribute at the guild ceremony at least once, but to everyone's surprise left empty-handed.

She was overlooked both as best supporting actress for her acclaimed turn as Bob Dylan in I'm Not There (Ledger did Dylan duty in the same film), and as best actress for Elizabeth: The Golden Age. The American veteran Ruby Dee took the supporting gong for American Gangster, while another star of yesteryear, Julie Christie, got the leading actress nod for Away From Her. Neither result augurs well for Blanchett's Oscar chances next month.

Other winners included the film No Country For Old Men, which was honoured for outstanding performance by a cast, and for the supporting role of Javier Bardem. All up, it was a good night for the dark, brooding types. In the TV awards, James Gandolfini led the charge for The Sopranos, named best male actor, alongside his on-screen wife Edie Falco, who won the female equivalent. The cast of the show, now ended, was named best ensemble in a drama series. The American version of the British comedy The Office won the comedy ensemble award.

It was the first of the big Hollywood award nights in a trophy season already clouded by the writers' strike. As such, Tinseltown was happy to frock up and stroll a red carpet, even if another shadow in the form of Ledger's death took the edge off the display of cleavage and colour. And amid that sea of extravagantly expensive evening wear, it was a nice touch that the most memorable fashion accessory of the night was the smallest, least ostentatious of them all: the black ribbon worn in Ledger's memory by the Canadian actor Ryan Gosling.

Leslie, thanks for the articles, as always.  I'm with you in that this tribute last night helped open the floodgates after almost a week of numbness.  :'(

Fabienne, that Sydney Morning Herald article is the best I've read.  It really captured the feeling of loss we all feel for Heath.  Thanks.

Leslie, Fabienne, everyone - thanks for the links, and for the thoughtful sincere comments  and reflections you're posting.

I normally tend to think these award ceremonies are quite empty and vapid and all about shallow commercial film- and self-promotion... but I am very, very moved both by DD-L and that "In memorian" clip, and by all your comments to those, - so I'm glad these SAGs took place just now.

I think whenever I see him in a film I will feel a twinge of pain and sadness.

So true, Kerry. Life goes on, as cliché as the saying is, it's true. We'll continue with our normal course of live eventually, the pain will get less (when?) and will one day be mostly a memory.
But only 'mostly'. I think most or even all of us will feel this twinge every now and then. Especially when we see a film with Heath, or maybe when one day Jake will become a father, or Ang Lee might win another Oscar in a few years, or ....

That in memoriam makes me so angry, it was fucking pathetic.

I have always loved Daniel Day Lewis, but love him even more for making up for it in his own unique way with this genuine speech.

Now I'm actually hoping the Oscars will be televised, so he can win and do it again.

I hope the Oscar votes are in, or I wouldn't put it past various Academy morons to vote for someone else just so he won't win and therefore can't do it again.

I can only hope Heath's family and friends can take as much comfort from Daniel Day Lewis's tribute as I have. It is so special that this tribute was delivered by another actor who's not a moviestar, like Heath himself. And to hear him do that at such an occasion where by the looks on the people's faces walking down the red carpet, nothing much had happened, made it all the more human and touching.

If they do that, we'll have yet ANOTHER reason to boycott the Oscars!

From everything I read, DD-L seems to have "a lock" on the Best Actor Oscar. I suspect Julie Christie will win for Best Actress (same as the SAG). However, I hope Cate Blancett gets Best Supporting Actress for I'm Not There. I thought she was excellent.

Daniel Day Lewis also broke down when he was on OPRAH last week. I had posted this on IMDB.com as I had seen only a three second clip.
Someone was nice enough to provide a link showing the full segment where Lewis expresses his sorrow about the death of Heath Ledger on OPRAH.
DDLewis is such a gentleman. Yes, it was nice at the SAG awards that Lewis mentioned "Ennis in the trailer at the end of the film," as powerful stuff so to speak.  Both actors are known for giving intense performances

I agree about Blanchett - I really hope she wins too. I was fascinated by her performance.

As for having a lock on an Oscar, well... didn't Brokeback have that until very late in the process, 2 years ago? I just don't trust those voters - too many of them keep mum about it but vote purely based on money, IOUs or prejudices, it would certainly seem.

So rumour has it.  ;)

I've been thinking, - not that there is much hope about this, but - I've been thinking: Maybe more of the voters will start voting for the performance that truly deserves the Oscar in the year in question, instead of voting for those who have "earned" it over time and are next on the list of those that really should get one. What happened to Heath should remind them that there's no assurance people will hang around here long enough to "earn" their Oscar making films as decades come and go.

Not giving him an Oscar for Ennis lost them the chance forever to award one of the finest performances there ever was.

It was the SAG award to Crash (for ensemble cast) that gave the voters an alternative to BBM.

I hope that DD-L's statement endears him to the rest of the movie industry. They were so clearly the words of someone who loves movies, who loves his craft and admires work by others.

And I want to believe that they reflect the feelings of Heath's other peers, as well. (There's some open space between what I know and what I want to believe... and it helps me to believe that DD-L speaks for many people.)

(BTW, I hadn't put DD-L and My Beautiful Laundrette together. That's a movie that I haven't watched in a long, long time.)
Watch out. That poster has a low startle point.

From E! Online:

Backstage Report: The Battle Over Heath
3:45 p.m. PT:  The SAGs honor Heath Ledger tonight. I trust and hope it'll be as heartfelt as Jason Sedillo's tribute.

I met Jason outside the Shrine, where I was interviewing a protester who was holding the cruelest sign I had ever seen. It read "Heath in Hell."

Sedillo stood beside the young woman, Jael Phelps, of the notoriously antigay Westboro Baptist Church, of Topeka, Kansas, with his own sign. It read "I'm sorry for them/R.I.P. Heath."

Sedillo was sorry. I was inspired.

On Friday night, Sedillo told me, he read that Westboro Baptist was planning to picket the SAGs, Heath and his work in Brokeback Mountain.

Right then and there in Fort Worth, Texas, where Sedillo serves as a church youth minister, the 30-year-old decided to plunk down $800, fly to Los Angeles and show up at the SAGs himself. With his own sign. To say he's sorry for something he wouldn't dream of saying himself.

To be honest, Sedillo's sign wasn't much of a sign—it was a little dry-erase board, and his message was scribbled in green ink. The passengers in the passing limos probably couldn't even see it.

"Here's a guy," Sedillo said of Ledger, "who didn't do anything but perform in movies."

But that was enough. As was Sedillo's sign.

I just have to say, though, re DD-L: I certainly did.

Both My Beautiful Laundrette and A Room with a View opened weeks (if not days) apart in early 1986 in New York (View was in the Paris Theater across from the Plaza). Twenty-two years later, I cannot remember which one of the two films I saw first, but I do remember the 'O' I made with my mouth when, half-way through the second film, I suddenly figured out that the same actor playing 'Johnny' in Laundrette was also playing 'Cecil Vyse' in View.

O. M. Gawd, I thought, what an actor--

What's weirder (and sadder) is--those films were made in 1985, when Daniel Day-Lewis was--yes--28 years old.

Heath was 28.

(Both DDL and Heath were both born in April, too.)

I'm maundering. But you know what I mean, I think.

Poor Heath. Poor us. Poor everybody.

Like you said on the Broome Street thread, John, there are circles and circles.

I can't help but feel that Daniel Day-Lewis was seeing his younger self in Heath, glad to recognize another serious artist in the making.  In a way, his grief over the loss of Heath at such a young age has echoes of a father losing his son---in this case his spiritual son.  :(

I'd rather take my chances in a room full of rattlesnakes.

However, while I think I understand your desire to help them, Br. Patrick, I agree with Meryl.  People need a reason to hate.  Their reason, more than likely a good measure of homophobia blessed with more than a good amount of misguided ignorance mixed religious conviction, is one of the strongest kinds of venom (hate).

We can't change them with love any more than they can change us with hate.

But we can wisely accept them as they are, like accepting rattlesnakes.  Most earthly creatures, except those that eat them, stay out of striking range and move quickly away without hesitation.

From E!

Give that guy a pat on the back.  ;D

Agree completely.  Nothing we do is going to change them.  THEY have to want to change.  Heck and sometimes even when homophobes do change, they don't always change completely.  Friend of mine is a homophobe.  One year, he had a serious operation and was down and out for six weeks, laid up at home recuperating.  I had lent him a bunch of books to read during his convalescence, but I never bothered to go see him (we were not that close at the time).  The only people who went to visit him was a gay co-worker and his lover.

He was very touched.  After that, he liked this guy a lot, hung out with him, thinks the world of him...but he still thinks being gay is a perversion, that gays should not be married or have equal rights and that they should be kept away from children.  Having a good experience with a gay person changed nothing about his homophobia.  He believes what he believes and to change this particular facet of it would cause him to doubt his other beliefs and he doesn't want to do that.

Observations from the SAG Awards:

http://movies.msn.com/movies/hitlist/01-29-08_2?GT1=7701

Here are the two best ones:

Classy move by a classy man: Daniel Day-Lewis' moving tribute to the recently lost Heath Ledger during his Best Actor acceptance speech was an incredibly touching moment and more than made up for the short clip Ledger received at the end of the show's "In Memoriam" montage.

Always blunt Brolin: While accepting the "No Country for Old Men" best ensemble award, Josh Brolin took a shot at Oscar prognosticators and Academy members who have complained the ending of the acclaimed movie doesn't satisfy by saying, "And we did a freaky little movie, whether you liked the ending or not." Touché, Mr. Brolin. Touché.

I've been searching in vain trying to find what, specifically, Cate Blanchett and Ryan Gosling did/said.  I don't doubt it - I just like to read the tasteful and heartfelt tributes wherever I can find them.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Barb,

Here's what Cate said at the Santa Barbara International Film festival:

Though she didn't get a chance to know Heath Ledger, Cate Blanchett acknowledged the late actor's thriving career while accepting the Modern Master Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.

"I'd like to pay special tribute to Heath Ledger who I think was an extraordinary actor and was well on his way to being a master himself" she said as the audience erupted in applause. "We will all miss you enormously."

"I didn't have the great fortune of working with him but the last image I have, just this strong image, would be him dancing the first day he arrived on set," she told PEOPLE at the award ceremony. "[He] was just so joyful and I just admire the way he kept evolving as an actor. I think it's a tragic, tragic loss and everyone is reeling."

Both Blanchett and Ledger starred in I'm Not There, a film depicting different characters of musician Bob Dylan, and although the two never shot scenes together she recollects a cheerful Ledger during production.

   ******************************************************************************************

Ryan and sister Mandy Gosling:

HOLLYWOOD - Ryan Gosling paid a special tribute to pal Heath Ledger at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday--by wearing a special black ribbon on his lapel.

The actor's sister Mandy designed the subtle black bow for the Lars and the Real Girl star because she felt Ledger's death should be acknowledged on the red carpet.

Gosling's sibling, who was his 'date' to the awards, says, "We just had to mark [that] something terrible has happened."

And the actor himself used interest in his black ribbon to urge the media to leave those grieving Ledger's shock death last week to mourn in peace.

Ryan said, "They [media] should leave all the people in his life alone. It's terrible."

Mandy said, " I read something his sister said about Heath, she said he was a lot of things to a lot of people but to me he was just my little brother. And it just hit me so hard..."
