Project! We Need Pictures
« on: March 12, 2006, 05:19:42 pm »
Okay folks.  I want us to start working on some things around here.  Since nobody seems ready yet to start on some of the harder stuff, let's do something fun and make this site look at little more personable and interesting.

I want some pictures.  First and foremost, for those of us "flatlanders" as IdahoLonely likes to say, I want some photos of mountains... or at least some big hills.  And they have to be from your area and photographed by you.  So grab those digital cameras, camera phones, or whatever and start taking some pictures.  I would love for us to have some great photo albums of some nice nature shots and we can build some sort of nice visual photo album together.

In fact, get out in the country and take some pictures of anything that you think might fit the theme of Brokeback.  That could be a 1960s Ford truck or a farm somewhere... or sheep... or anything else.  We could also use photos of you if you'd like!

I will find places around the site to use them to help keep us in a Brokeback state of mind.

You can e-mail photos to: [email protected] and I will get about putting them on the site.

Here are some outdoor shots.  I also have many indoor/outdoor shots that contain quotes from the short story or Film. Right now, I have 260 shots.   If you want some more, let me know

Hi... feel free to sent a dozen or so.  You can send them to [email protected], which will work better anyway because the forum software has a file size limit.

Thanks for helping out!

Hey Phil,

I emailed you one lame pic I had from a trip to Tahoe, it does have mountains. I haven't been to to Rockies since digital photos took off so I am going to dig through my old photos and get my hubby to scan some. Or I could send pic from Space Mountain which is our highest mountain in Florida they say.

Hugs,

Tim

This is a great idea! I could contribute for the pictures.. Actually I live right by all the scenes where they filmed..I could actually get pictures of "Brokeback mountain" (3 sisters mountain) and others....

Wow... this would be super great.  In fact, we might draft you as our correspondent and send you to the filming locations and make you take LOTS of pictures.  I am still considering a visit to your neck of the woods this summer if things fall into place.

You know what horo?  I really, really, want to do this!  I don't know when I'll be able to, maybe next year.  But one thing’s for sure, I really want the opportunity to do some camping under those very same stars that was featured in brokeback! Will I be able to get hailed on with the very same hail?  ;)  I do jest of course; this would be such a cool trip to do.  Thanks horo.

I haven't forgotten about your contributions.  I am experimenting with some slide show tools so I can build a new application that will showcase our contributions and perhaps run with BBM Radio.

Pics can go to [email protected].  I am hoping I can catch up on this stuff over the weekend.  I have gotten too far behind.

Check out http://www.slideroll.com/ - it's one of the services I am reviewing for consideration to make the pictures come alive.  Other ideas and suggestions are welcomed too.

I sent about 30-40 pictures taken in the Rocky Mountains to your email address. Hope you find a use for them. I made them all jpgs, about 200-300 kBs for onscreen viewing. Looking forward to seeing your photos of the Canadian Rockies, horo! I just made one small trip to Calgary last year and saw the Rockies over to the west as the plane was coming in for a landing. Then, when I got to downtown Calgary, I thought I was in Europe! Such a bustling metropolis. I hope to get back there this summer and visit Jasper National Park and the headwaters of the Athabasca River. I would also like to visit in the winter and see the Northern Lights. I have some friends who live there and can't wait to visit them. Meanwhile the lower Rockies where I live in Colorado are mighty nice too.

I ALSO have the same pic with Ennis in it--gotta go find it...oh, I get it...the one with Ennis in it, you have to move the sideways arrow at the bottom of the post to get him..I'll make a smaller one.

Here are some links to websites where I have found Brokeback Mountain pictures. And  . . . some of them are not even shown in the movie.

http://www.bioscop.cz/_web/index.php?akce=ukazfilm&id=220#galerie

http://pics.livejournal.com/fa_sharp/

http://oxoniensis-art.com/caps/brokeback/bbm.htm

http://web.mac.com/sic3/bbm/

In the pic below, they are actually leaning against the truck which Ennis drove early in the movie. (In the book/short story, Ennis was driving his own truck when he showed up at Aguirre's office in Signal. He was driving when he and Jack split up and drove off in opposite directions after they had eaten at "that place in Dubois." Ennis pulled over to the side of the road because he thought he had to puke because it felt like someone was pulling his guts out. It was not food pulling on his "guts;" it was the fact that the man with whom he was in love drove off the other way.)

Oh, the buckle that Jack is wearing in that pic is the very same one which he was wearing when he showed up at Aguirre's office in May 1963.

In the AP story, Jack had a "minor bull-riding buckle" fastened to his belt at the bar in Signal, May 1963 and in the 1967 reunion scene at the motel, Jack talks about the belt buckle he had won rodeoin' when he met Lureen.

So, he had earned at least two buckles.

I don't know if this will work, but here's a thumbnail of a mountain south of the Catalina Range in Tucson which I can see from my house. I took this at the Sonoran Desert Museum.

These pics are of course where Ennis picks up his supplies.  It's quite the hike down a steep path to get to this bridge but well worth it.

This house is in Calgary and is where Monroe & Alma lived.  I wanted to take a pic of me in front of it but someone lived there so I decided to take a quick pic and get out of there! lol

This is the alley where Jack picks up the mexican prostitute.  It's actually in Calgary behind a boxing gym! lol  In the movie it's at night but you can tell it's the right place especially where I'm standing.  That's the spot where the prostitute is leaning against.  The pic taken from inside the alley showing out is in the movie but they show mexican style buildings which were props they built but as you can see now its just an empty parking lot.

Those are great pictures horo35, thanks!  When we have our trip to Alberta next year, those will be very helpful.  Do you live in the area?

Phillip, my brother spends his summers playing for a music festival in the Tetons.  He's also an accomplished amateur photographer, and he recently sent me these great Wyoming pictures.  The red rocks are north of Rawlins in the Wind River region:

Horo34  and Meryl
These pictures and the guided tour are fascinating
I will be watching this thread for more.

I have been experimenting with screen grapbs from the movie and I created a special round of the ABCz complete with "pizelized paintings".  Some of them are quite good, even if I have to say so myself.  But I would give anything to be able to walk the "Brokeback Tour" with Horo35.
And Meryl these photos are so cool.  But of course that is the real Wyoming.  - lol.

Thanks guys.

These pics here are from the scene where Ennis walks to the bar in Riverton and ends up geting into a fight with a guy in a truck.  In the 1st pic I'm trying to walk where Ennis  is before the truck almost hits him.  This building is now empty with the neon signs gone and is actually located in Blackie, Alberta. In the other pic you can see the Blackie community hall building (a few couple of doors down from bar) which is also seen in the movie.

These pics are the church where Alma & Ennis were married.  It is located in Dinton, Alberta.  When we went there I actually almost passed right by it because of it being so small so I had to really step on the brakes in order not to miss the turn off!! lol   The second pic is actually taken through the glass on the front door.  It wasn't open so thats the best shot I could get.  I really wanted to get a shot from the back looking out cause thats what you see in the movie.

These pics are from Carseland, Alberta.  This scene is where Ennis & Jack are walking to the bar for a drink after getting hired by Joe Aguirre.  1st pic is me standing in front.  I walked up to the bar door and wanted to take a pic of where Jack & Ennis were sitting but chickened out due to the patrons staring at me! lol  second pic is my wife walking in front hunched over.  I asked her why she was and she said that she was trying to look like Ennis walking in the scene! lol  She wont be too happy with me posting this one!

This scene is from ...well you guessed it....where Jack & Ennis...uhhh..."meet in person"!  In the movie it's at night but the distinctive motel sign gives it away even in the daytime.  This is located in Beisker, Alberta.  And the house where Jack lived as a boy is not too far from here.

And speaking of Jacks house here it is.  This is located just east of Besiker, Alberta.  It's actually located in a farmers field, abandoned and totally surrounded by brush!  There is no way you can reach it from the front.  I had to walk around in a field to get to it.  But this shot is where you see Ennis meeting with Jacks mother.  It's really run down as you can see.  They actually filmed the scenes inside where Ennis goes into Jacks room and I so wanted to go in there to take pics but I needed to get permission from the owner.  Plus I'm not sure how a person would get in there with all the windows and doors boarded up! Ohh and also there were wasps building nests all around the house so I didnt want to get too close!  It may be hard to picture this in the movie due to time erroding the surrounding environment but check out the tree on the right...that tree hasnt changed a bit! It looks the same now as it did in the movie.  I could now see Ennis standing at the door...

Even though it makes me feel incredibly sad, that's a great picture! Not only because of what happened there, but also that it looks so abandoned now, and seems to indicate that the filming was a long long time ago. Lee

These pics are taken in Rockyford, Alberta.  These are the scenes where Jack is riding in the rodeo and also meets Laureen.  This area is supposed to be 2 different rodeo grounds in the movie..one in Childress and the other one in Electra.  They just used the same area...only difference was they put up boards over the steel fence to make the rodeo grounds look different.  In the second pic I'm standing in front of the chute where Jack came out of (#4).

In this shot I climbed up to the announcer area and just had to get a shot that was from the movie!  It was very cool looking out from there...I could almost see Jack sitting there on the end of his truck as Laureen raced by and dropped her hat!  The scond pic is where Laureen and Jack "park their car"!  It's actually right by the rodeo grounds.  You can make out the small shack that they parked by in the movie.

This pic here is where they shot the dance hall scene with Jack and Randall sitting outside talking on the bench.  It's actually a CIBC bank in Rockyford, AB. Nothing was shot inside.  The inside scenes were shot at the Royal Canadian Legion builing in Calgary.  I wanted to sit on the bench where Jack and Randall sat but they moved it to the opposite side...dohhh!! >:( ;)

Here is the Riverton post office (in Rockyford, AB) that Ennis picked up the famous postcards that read "you bet" & ...sadly "deceased".  The brick building beside it is now replaced with a newer building and the adornments of the post office are now gone.  I tried to look in but the glass is all painted black and it's all locked up.  The phone booth across the street where Ennis phones Laureen that's in front of the JT Bar is nowhere to be seen..possibley a prop.

Front-ranger and toast,  allot of the small, older farm buildings, here in this part of the province anyhow are run down to this kind of shape.  Many buildings are allot like the Twist farm.  When approaching the site on the highway all you can really see is the green tarp that is now covering the roof.  I think of it wasn't for the green tarp we would have missed the house completely

I hope.... no I pray, that the owner of the land is fixing it up, trying to preserve the site. If not for the sake of BBM, for the sake of the history that lies in the house not just with the making of brokeback, but the history that started I would think close to 80 years ago.

And here is the JT Bar that Ennis walks in front of to make the phone call to Laureen. Notice you can also see the Childress dance hall (bank) across the street. I'm seen in the 3rd pic walking towards the  imaginary phone booth to make that call! The second pic shows the surrounding area that Ennis walks by.  All of this is in Rockyford, AB

Thank You Horo and Luv.

This is so cool
I love the tour you are giving us.
You almost have me thinking I can be Ang Lee and his cinematographer.
If one had a portable DVD player and a couple of buddies in cowboy hats, you could have so much fun getting the angles right.
You are also making me realize how much of the film is actually Ennis scenes.
The film is really about Ennis.

Toast

ps the deep blue sky in the street scene reminded of one of the sadder paragraphs in the story:

Annie Proulx wrote:

Going up, the day was fine but the trail deep-drifted and slopping wet at the margins. They left it to wind through a slashy cut, leading the horses through brittle branchwood, Jack, the same eagle feather in his old hat, lifting his head in the heated noon to take the air scented with resinous lodgepole, the dry needle duff and hot rock, bitter juniper crushed beneath the horses' hooves. Ennis, weather-eyed, looked west for the heated cumulus that might come up on such a day but the boneless blue was so deep, said Jack, that he might drown looking up.

I can tell that you have seen the movie and enjoyed it.
But have you read the short story as well?

Yes I have read the story...I actually have the book.  Although I wish I would've read the story 1st THEN seen the movie because I think I would've appreciated it all the more.  Unfortunately I never heard of the book until I saw media reports on the movie.

I've just finished post #76, and anxiously await the next installment.  Horo35, your photos are great, as are the rest of them.  In the post where you show the bar where Jack and Ennis go for a drink, you said you didn't take a photo of the inside "...due to patrons staring at me."  When my nephew was about 15, he became interested in photography to inhance his 24-hrs-a-day consuming interest in trains and wanted me to teach him to use a better camera than a point-and-shoot (I am a photographer).  And the first rule was never let the on-lookers decide what you will or won't photograph; 2nd one was to not be shy about asking  people to move if they were not wanted in the shot.  One day, a few weeks later, we were at the train museum station in Sacramento (CA) and he asked me to take the picture (because he was embarrased by the crowd) but I told him to do it himself and pay no attention to them....lo and behold, he steped around looking for the shot he wanted (I had turned my attention elsewhere) and suddenly heard him ask everyone in the way to please move back.  They did. And his photo won the photo contest at his school.  I wasn't there to see him get his award, but my sister said he thanked me for encouraging him with his photography.  e has since won many "train related" contests.

So, to you I also say:  photograph what you want, wherever it may be and don't be concerned by on-lookers.

If I was as good with the computer as I am with a camera, well, who knows....

Hi guys
I can't wait for your mountain pics.
Even if yu don't find the exact spots, any pics of the area are great.
I like the way you released the pics over a few days last week.
you are a gentleman Horo and Mrs. Luv.
I hope you have a great day together.
Don't catch too many fish, though.
Toast  (Morey)

ps according to the info in your picture files, you have a Kodak C340 camera and you could be getting much more detail in your pics.
Personally, I love to zoom in on pics and check out details and compare them to the movie.  Any chance you will be using a greater resolution for your pics in the future, to show us more of these details?  I know this means you will get fewer pics on your card, but sometimes ...

Well we went to the mountains today and found all the spots we wanted to.  We first wanted to go to the shot where Jack & Ennis jumped off the cliff in the buff.  But when we got to the area the guard wouldn't let us in due to construction.  Ohh well..I guess we'll have to get some connections on how to get in! ;)
1st pic is the scene where Ennis & Jack are riding horseback by a lake.  This is a beautiful area as seen in the 3rd pic of surrounding area.  2nd pic is movie shot..wish I couldve got a nice crystal clear shot of lake but just wasn't happening.

And actually right next to there is the winding road where they show Jack & Ennis speeding off together in the truck.  I thought I wouldnt find it but its very distinct as your driving north on the 724 hwy.  Although as you can tell it is the same mountain..from the movie it looked like they super-imposed it somehow...it looks larger in the movie.

Ohh and as we drove around we saw one of the area townfolk having an outdoor picnic!  When you leave Canmore to go on hwy 742 you will actually have to drive up a mountain side...and this is usually crowded with mountain sheep on the road...so be cautious.

Here is the scene where Jack & Ennis have a final meeting.  The 1st pic is where Jack says the famous line of "I wish I knew how to quit you!"  This area is popular with people so it was hard to get some shots.  Cars and people were everywhere...it was a g-ddamn bitch of a unsatisfactory situation! :D  Jack is actually standing in front of a parking lot...as you can see in the second pic. This is of course where Ennis speeds off after the so called dozy embrace scene.  It's hard to tell from this pic cause of all the cars.  Also the outhouse on the right doesnt help either!  In the movie it looked like they used props or a computer add in to cover it.

Here are some pics I took awhile ago of some mountains I thought that looked nice.  I was looking at one scene from the movie and I realized that was the same mountains in this pic I took.  I dont think I was in the right spot but I was definately looking in the right direction. Wow... Stroke of luck I guess! 8)

This area is what you see when approaching the major campsite seen in the movie.  You walk down this  rather large hill and come to the hill where they fight on, the dozy emrace scene and the pole bridge.  As you can see it's quite the scenic area!

1st scene you will pass is the fight scene.  I thought from looking at the movie they were way up in the mountains somewheres but this is actually a small hill located in a valley.  I was surprised with the location.  2nd pic I'm sitting where Ennis sat but they somehow used a different shot.  Ennis looks quite close up while that little dot in the corner..well thats me.   Im not that good with photography... But the other shot of my wife turned out better.  It is a very beautiful area.

Well after the hill scene right away you notice the pole bridge.  Not sure who built it but it's fairly sturdy...not sure if one needs it cause Goat Creek is quite small and shallow as you can see.  Well I posed right by where Jack sat and sure enough there was a big stick sittin right there..so I just had to grab it and do the laundry thing!  But I did leave it at the same spot for someone else next time.  I was going to get buck naked but figured maybe that was going too far!!

Hi horo35...your pics are truly amazing and I enjoy looking at them very much.  In the view of the mountain with the truck you state "...from the movie it looked like they super-imposed it somehow...it looks larger in the movie."

In comparing the movie still to your shot, noticing the narrow width of the curve in the road and the tops of foreground trees, it appears to have been filmed from a greater distance and a higher elevation than yours.  Additionally, the movie camera with it's super tele-photo lens compresses the scene, making the mts appear larger and closer.

Again, your shot of the truck driving away with the outhouse visible is just the opposite; the movie still was taken from a closer view.  Notice the tops of the trees in your shot and the expanse of sky, compared to the movie still.  I caught this immediately because  the diagonal tree trunk just to the right of the truck in the movie still is much larger, indicating it was a much tighter crop.

I pick up on a lot of these subtle things, having been a professional photographer.  The camera you are using (and I know nothing about it) is probably not the kind you would use to exactly duplicate a movie still, but you are showing the general locale, and that is the important object for this project.  Keep up the good work...Doug

Well finally here is the "dozy embrace" scene.  It's actually right by the pole bridge.  When you see the area and then watch the movie you'll see that pretty much all the campsite scenes were right in this area.  One could actually camp here...it's a perfect spot.  Well i dont know if you actually could...I didnt see no signs but since its not a designated area, probably not.  But its a great area to sit there and enjoy the quiet nature.  As you can see in the first pic someone set up some stones to the left...looks like thats where the fire was.  I guess they were marking it so one could stand in that very same spot...just like I am in pic 2.  You can definatly tell its the spot by looking to the left and seeing the one tree leaning over to the right against the other one.

Thanks Horo and Luv

Sometimes you think visiting the site of something will destroy the illusion
but your visits to these areas have added to it.
I can just imagine how you must have felt to be able to stand there under the mountains and to hear and feel the environment
The movie is so quiet, as far as natural sounds. but you were there.

It is also good that theTwist home will be protected and saved.
This sort of "tourism" could be another way to keep the spirit of Brokeback Mountain alive, or at least to make more people aware of it.

Thanks for every picture, and yur words are so honest and well spoken.
Thanks.   I am letting everyone know about this neat experience.
Of course I hope to see even more pics here as you both continue to be captivated by this move.
You lucky Albertans.

It has been heavenly taking a little trip to Alberta on my lunch break! Thank you so much, horo and iluv. (Thanx for the pic too iluv!!) I look forward to yr visit to the Twist house after the harvest is over. What do they grow there--hay? Wheat? I suppose that is a Flames belt buckle U have, horo, but it looks very similar to a minor rodeo buckle like Jack had!

Mmm..what do they grow?  I'm not really sure.  Looked like wheat or mustard to me.  As for my belt buckle it's actually a Jack Daniels buckle!   Yes I do dress "country"...dont rodeo though.  Closest I came to being a cowboy was hauling livestock!

I just looked up the Cloud Peak Wilderness in my Wyoming atlas, and some of the lakes north of West Tensleep Lake have wonderful names -- Lake Solitude, Mistymoon Lake, Mirror Lake. It looks like really beautiful country. I've never been to the Big Horns, but now I want to go.
