There is a proposal to build a "diverging diamond" traffic pattern in our town to deal with traffic growth and reduce left hand turn accidents and also minimize construction costs (the alternative to would be to do a major rebuild of the intersection). There is only one diverging diamond road configuration in the world right now, in France. But this may be coming to more towns near you. It confused me until I saw a demo of it, because traffic literally crosses from right lanes to left (thus making left hand turns that never means you are turning against oncoming traffic - something unique for North Americans where we drive on the right). I think it's elegant, but a lot of folks think people would not be able to figure it out.
Would you?
This is an actual real-world simulation - the streets and project location is about five minutes from my house.
